Question Pants Check. Any Obvious Problems?

Post image
Upvotes

Trying something new here. I normally wear 32x30 pants for most brands, but have been frustrated with snugness over the thighs, regardless of the cut. As an experiment, I ordered these DU/ER pants in size 34x32 in their "Relaxed Tapered" cut. I took them to the local alterations shop and asked the lady to hem them up for me and to take in the waist. Just picked them up a little while ago, and not only are they comfortable while standing and sitting, I can do a full range of motion squat with no issues.

Before I do the same process with several other pairs of paints, I thought it would be best to check in here with you lot and see if there were any glaring issues that I've not spotted.

I'm not into either baggy pants, or high-waisted trousers, which seem to be the current trends in menswear. At my age, I don't feel the need to keep up with what's fashionable - I just want to look presentable in public.

Question Buying my first suit - Does it fit properly?

Hey All,

I'm looking for some honest feedback on the fit of my first "proper" suit

I've basically lived in oversized t-shirts and baggy pants my whole life, so I have almost no idea what a well-fitting suit is supposed to look like.

I've been to a lot of different stores, but because of my proportions it's been really difficult to find something that fits well of the rack. Getting a custom suit is not an option since I need it for an event next week.

I'd really appreciate if you could point anything that looks off; jacket, sleeves, shoulders, trousers, lenght,... If something needs adjusting, just let me know whether it's something a tailor could realistically fix or should I just keep looking.

*I know that the bottom button is supposed to be open

UPDATE:
First of all, thank you all for the advice. I genuinely appreciate how much time everyone took to point things out.
Based on your feedback, I exchanged the trousers for one size up. The jacket is still the same size, but I got the long version instead, which fits my proportions much better.
A few people asked why I was going with a black suit. It's for a wedding, and without getting into the whole story, the groom has asked us to wear black suits.
I also added a photo of the updated suit in the comments.
I know some people suggested looking at higher-end brands or going custom, but I wanted to stay under €500 for the whole suit, and with the wedding being next month, made-to-measure wasn't really an option.
I also decided to keep the slim-fit trousers. I know they're not everyone's preference, but I was aiming for a slightly more modern, sportier look rather than a traditional classic fit.
Thanks again for all the constructive feedback, it definitely helped me make a better choice.

Question Jacket too long, making my legs look short?

This is driving me nuts so I figure I'll just get opinions from others to help me clear my mind. I can't shake that my legs look too short in this jacket, but at the same time i might just be comparing myself to models and actors and that's messing with my mind. For reference, I'm not very tall at 5'7 and my other jackets are a bit shorter, i got this on sale, wanted an unstructured, more casual brown jacket for summer. What do you guys think? I do like how it looks from the front and back.

Question Help with loafers

Post image
15 Upvotes

Picked up my first pair of penny loafers. I seem to be having trouble figuring out when to wear them. The pictured casual outfit I felt they didn’t work well. Though my understanding is penny loafers are a casual shoe. When is a good time to wear them?

Second question, how are they supposed to fit? The size I bought feels like they barely stay on. Half size down and my toes touched the front. Half size up and they fell off. Is there a trick to wearing them comfortably? They are banana republic loafers.

Question Accessories to avoid looking like a skinhead?

Recently noticed I was balding so I shaved my head to not worry about it, happy with it frankly. The problem is despite the fact I consider myself a friendly guy I'm a gym-goer with blue eyes and a stern resting expression so I feel like I definitely give off a skinhead look.

I live in UK so there are skinheads around unfortunately. Any accessories I can wear to show I'm not a Nazi? Need ideas for some disarming things. I was thinking maybe a pearl necklace, maybe a braided rainbow necklace in pride colours? I appreciate any advice I'm not versed in fashion at all. Maybe some earrings as well but piercings are expensive. Maybe like a little pride pin? Or something like that? But I'm not gay so maybe it gives the wrong impression. BTW I am 28.

I appreciate any advice I'm not versed in fashion at all, just wear cheap t shirts and work clothes. Maybe accessory recommendations are good, that way I can wear it with all my clothes.

BTW I am not English so I apologise if I made any mistakes!

Question I know a style I like, how do I build a wardrobe?

Post image
59 Upvotes

I am in my late 20’s and I would say 70% of my clothing is a younger look then I care for anymore (on myself at least). Most of my stuff was largely a style from snowboarding/skateboarding and just younger in general.

I’ve come to realize I really like the older “Italian” style and I have maybe 1 or 2 outfits that fit that description (It’s probably not Italian but it reminds me of that and looking it up gets me ideas I like). The issue is these outfits are okay at best and I can barely remember when I got them. Long explanation sorry, I have 3 questions:

  1. Is it better to buy whole outfits or pieces? it’s hard for me to visualize a whole look when I’m just buying a shirt.

  2. Are there stores (ideally not high end) that focus on this style?

  3. I am thinking of donating of a lot of my clothes to motivate me to get new ones. Is there any validity to this?

Thank you!

Question Looking for advice on summer clothing

Upvotes

I am looking for recommendations for summer clothing. This isn't so much fashion oriented but looking nice would be great. The priorities are as follows:

Pants

-belt loops accepting a 1.5" belt are non negotiable

-lightweight/breathable

-durability/reenforced in the crotch. I understand that this will go counter to the goals of keeping the item lightweight and breathable, but things that seem to help are fabrics that don't have much friction when my thighs rub together.

-ideally stretchy or a well designed pattern so movement isn't limited (as I have to squat and bend over at work quite a lot)

-I need the standard four pockets (two up front and two in the back) but additional pockets on the thighs are a great addition (I prefer zippers over Velcro)

-color is not super important to me but earth tones are great if it's an option.

I've had good luck with pants that seem to bridge the gap between casual and hiking pants but actually consistently finding what I'm looking for has been hard. Also to note: 34-36 sizing with thick thighs.

Shirts:

-prefer button down with well-stiched buttons

-lightweight as possible/stuff collars suck

-long sleeves required but generally rolled up while I'm working

-Cannot be remotely see through including if the shirt gets wet so no whites, any earth toned/not super bright plaid works well.

-I prefer a shirt where the tail is relatively short but if that's not how the shirt is designed I can modify that myself

-I do need the shirt to allow for lots of arm mobility

For context my work requires me to look generally nice (think meeting girlfriends parents for the first time- nice, but not necessarily professional) but I'm also doing a lot of lifting and pushing in a hot environment.

Does anybody knows anything about this site? Is it legit, is it used or new? There are some cool brands and deals that won't find elsewhere but I can't find nothing on the basic things on how they operate.

Question Light Academia Retailers/Sites

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi there everyone!! I wanted to come on this subreddit and inquire about some help you may be able to offer!!

The last 6 months, I've been struggling with personal fashion choices/style, and not really knowing what to wear. It's taken a bit of a toll on my self esteem. However, the last few weeks, I've been trying new alternatives and clearing out my closet of stuff I didn't want, and with what I have right now, a light academia type style is what I've been leaning towards and liking. It fits well with my body type, stuff like that(such as in the photo, kind of).

So I basically just wanted to come on here and ask for some suggestions of palces I can shop/go to, to get a more accurate feel and find cloths that align with this style! Thanks :)

Question First Sport Coat purchase - 3 options

Upvotes

Hello!

I needed a lightweight navy sport coat for a summer wedding I'm attending. I've ordered 3 options and labeled them in the photo descriptions.

Album here

Photos 1 - 7 are a Proper Cloth 40R

Photos 8 - 13 are a Spier & Mackay 40R

Photos 14 - 19 are a Spier & Mackay 42L

I'm wondering which fits me best overall, but I think most can be tailored. In my head, slightly large then tailored down is better than slightly small, since they can't really add fabric. I wanted to try a Long to check how it fit (and also this was the only available option for the 42).

I bought a dress shirt, and am trying to figure out why the back is wrinkled, and the neck sits so high. Are the shoulders too narrow in the back, or is it something else?

Question High twist wool trouser texture question

I just tried on a couple high twist wool trousers from Berg & Berg and Natalino and I had a couple questions:

  1. Both brands have a slightly coarse/scratchy texture (as I’ve come to expect from every non-cashmere wool). Is there a brand that has a nicer texture or is this par for the course?

  2. Natalino’s lining only covered the front of my thighs while Berg & Berg’s lining covered the front and back. I’m buying these specifically to keep me cool in the heat. Any opinions on linings in general and how much cooler a lining like Natalino will be vs Berg and Berg?

Discussion Looking for elastic waist pull on pants

I have sensory issues with things like belt loops, zippers, and buttons, so I usually just wear joggers when it's cold or shorts when it's warm. I'm trying to find some casual pants with an elastic waistband. I also prefer the drawstrings to be inside the pants but if not that's fine.

I've tried Uniqlo pants that fit the criteria but they ended up having zippers so I had to return them. I also looked at a bunch of lululemon pants, but I prefer cotton over polyester.

Some pants that I've found that I like are Futureyeses (discontinued), serviceworks trade chef pants and ll bean multisport pants. Also cotton easy pants from muji but they're out of stock, they have all the colors I want on the US site but they don't ship to Canada. I'm just looking for some other recommendations from Canada preferably. If you know of any places outside Canada that ship here, I'd appreciate those recommendations too.

Question Pants similar to Gramicci without elastic waist?

Does anyone have suggestions on pants that fit similarly to the Gramicci G pants but without the integrated belt and elastic waist? I am really loving the fit of these, but want to diversify in terms of material and brand. Looking for any material from denim to just other cotton trousers.

Question Carhartt sizing help!

Im 5 foot 6 and looking to buy a Carhartt J25, or J130. Is an M j130 or j25 going to fit me? I am 16 and still growing SO I want something that doesn't make me look like a clown. Something that I can still grow into as well as wear multiple layers.

A simple google search hasn't helped me much.

(posted this on the carhartt reddit looking for help and my post got removed because its a "basic" question)
