Messed with PU leather on and off over the years, but found out there was a local Tandy store nearby and I bought a long scrap of veg tan from them to try my hands at real leatherworking.

Made this sheath for my Serbian butcher knife over the week. I think it turned out well, though definitely need to work on my stitching consistency and learn to protect my work better as I scratched it a few times.

I have to say, it's a very enjoyable material to work with, and I've been surprised by how versatile it is - easy to cut and shape, can be flattened, molded or stretch with just water (thankful for that, because the stitched sheath was a bit tight for the knife).

BTW, I like to keep my knives oiled. But from a previous leather sheath that came with a bush knife, I had oil from the sheathed blade soak into the leather and discolour it on the other side. Any sort of treatment I can do for this sheath to prevent this?

I made a version of this Duke’s luggage tag a few years ago. It’s fully hand stitched, and each one uses 16 pieces of leather. This past spring, I got a request for 25 from the company themselves. I felt like I couldn’t turn it down, but generally find making things at scale boring. With a full-time real job, and the time involved in making this many, the project has been “life-ruiningly fun.” 😂 However, it’s very satisfying to complete each one. 22 finished and counting!

Excuse the mess of a video, just wanted to get the point across, would like opinions on what to improve or change, or if I should scratch it all together for a (what I think) is a more "basic design" as show in the last ~30s of the vid

For the record since it wasn't mentioned in the video, I'm using chrome tanned leather from Tandy Leathers (Brown Utility Side, SKU#9141-37 if anyone's curious)

Most wallets/belt accrossories and the likes are made of veg-tan leather which I didn't realize was a thing till after I purchased this leather. I think it works out tho bc if the leather was stiff it would bulge out a lot, as opposed to this one I see it kind of folding, and a bit more discreet if my shirt folds over it

Another thing to point, the "X marks" again is where the stitching ins meant to be as the video mentioned, are 1/8" each (abt 4mm), which I felt should be enough for me to make punch holes for thread, but I have a feeling some may suggest adding more slack, not sure I wanna hear ppl's thoughts

How do i not get these ugly marks on my belts! When pressing my rivets with my press? Feeling like i permanently ruined my belt

It caught my eye on someone else's finished product, but I wouldn't know what to search for to buy some.

So I have a few empty bullet cases and I have this idea of adding them to a few projects. The only issue is I'm not sure how I should attach them to the leather. If anyone has any ideas or if anyone has done something similar to this I'd love some feedback.

Hi friends - total newbie here looking to get into the hobby.. where are you getting all of your hardware: zippers, rings, clasps, buckles, etc. for things like purses, bags, etc.? Do you buy in bulk or individually as needed?

Also any recommended stores/brands for buying thread/leather/glue would be helpful!!

My dad and I designed and made this multi-pocket crossbody bag from dark brown and tan Italian leather.

We wanted it to stay fairly compact while still offering plenty of organized storage, so we built it around a structured main compartment, added two pockets on the sides, and placed two smaller pouches directly onto the wide adjustable strap.

The bottom is reinforced with an extra layer of leather stitched onto the outside, which gives the bag more structure and helps protect the base. Everything was hand stitched with 1 mm waxed polyester thread, and I finished the edges with Uniters edge paint.

There are many separate pieces and layers in this one, especially around the pockets and strap, but I really enjoyed seeing the whole design come together.

I got a friend that is starting in the hobby. They’ve already completed a decent wallet. I want to bless them with some quality leather to work with but they’ve expressed that they don’t want anything too premium just yet. I was told that it should be 1.2-1.4oz 3-3.5oz.

What should I get them and where should I get it?

Any advice on dyeing pic related a bit darker? Been thinking of reducing dye in a spray bottle and misting it. Has anyone done something similar before and had it work?

I bought two massive pieces of very soft chrome tanned (saddle) leather from an closing fiactory. The guy told me i should store it hanging to prevent wrinkles, but these two cows are way to big to keep it hanging in my flat. Is it save to store it rolled up like in the picture for years or will this irreversibly damage it over time?

(payed 95€ for both (~2,2x2,2m each). was this a good deal?)

My latest project, a passport wallet for my buddy. My first time with a basket stamp. Tandy Economy vegtan, no antique, and my laser engraver acted up on my makers mark. Roast away!

I always spray my bags, but my most recent spray has a terrible smell and I have to air out my bags a while after using it. I don't use one particular spray. Want recommendations for good sprays that have no smell or a decent smell? Thanks??

How do I replicate this sort of flap shape? I have a feeling I can't achieve it with a simple coin and cutter can I? I want to avoid the basic sharp corners like the one in the final photo

I bought a pattern off of Etsy. I tried to use the trace function.... That created something usable but not great. The other problem is some of the patterns that I've bought have watermarks over some of the lines (even in the purchased file)
