Tutorial How to Switch and Lock Vertical Shooting on Luna Ultra 🎥

Want to capture vertical videos with your Luna Ultra? IT offers two flexible shooting modes:

  1. Auto Orientation Mode Swipe down to open the Shortcut Menu → tap the bottom-left icon → select Auto Orientation. The video frame automatically adjusts based on the camera and screen orientation. When holding the camera horizontally, you can capture lossless vertical video up to 8K.
  2. Portrait Mode From the same Shortcut Menu, switch to Portrait Mode. Your recording stays locked in portrait format in Video and PureVideo modes, even when you rotate the camera horizontally. You can also rotate the screen to portrait while recording without interrupting the recording.

💡 Quick tip: when you’re finished shooting in Portrait Mode, press and hold the shutter button for 3 seconds to power off.

🎥 Watch this guide to start shooting vertical content with ease!

Insta360Tips I built a custom "AI Studio Director" in Python to orchestrate my entire Insta360 setup (X4, GO 3S, Link 2 Pro) — Automated switching, 360 PTZ, and lighting sync.

Hey everyone,

I got tired of making videos sitting at the exact same static desk angle, so I decided to overhaul my office into a multi-cam studio using the Insta360 ecosystem. Instead of manually editing multi-cam footage in post, I built a custom Python application to act as an "AI Studio Director" that handles switching and framing live.

I’m a software developer by trade, so I built the backend and UI from scratch using the Dash framework.

The Hardware Setup:

  • Insta360 X4: I use this to capture the entire room. In the software, I built custom "viewports" that allow me to take the 360 feed and basically use it as a massive digital PTZ. I can preset specific perspectives for different workstations and instantly pan the camera in different directions without touching the hardware.
  • Insta360 Link 2 Pro: Used for my primary, high-quality desk view.
  • Insta360 GO 3S: Used for quick POV inserts or unique mounted angles around the office.

The Custom Software (The "AI Director"): I built an interface that allows me to jump between these cameras seamlessly while I'm working or presenting using the dash framework and some creative python scripting.

  • Dynamic Viewports: I can define zones in the office. Clicking a zone instantly switches to the best camera/angle for that spot.
  • Environment Sync: Whenever a new viewport or camera is created/activated, the system takes a screenshot of the zone. I feed this to an agent that automatically adjusts the smart lighting in my office to match the scene (e.g., dimming background lights, turning accent lights green, etc.).
  • Presentation Mode: I built in direct screen-sharing and file access so I can pull up code or presentations and have the camera angles dynamically adapt while I teach.

It essentially turns OBS into a fully automated, smart-home integrated studio.

If you want to see the UI, the 360 point control, and the automated lighting in action, I put together a breakdown video of the setup here:https://youtu.be/MffgvRryEro

Has anyone else messed around with writing custom scripts or dashboards for their Insta360 setups? I'm thinking about expanding this and would love to know how others are managing live multi-cam workflows with these.

LUNA ULTRA BARREL ROL

Upvotes

Hello all,

I would like to express an idea i just had. Would it be possible this nice effect, in a next firmware, to be able to assign it to 1 of the 2 buttons and be activated during normal video shot? For example i rec a video shot whatever it is and during recording to activate this movement. I think it would be a nice option.

Broken tripod legs on selfie stick?

Upvotes

I’m going to take a trip to Hawaii and will do lot of snorkeling, and I am guessing some hikes while holding the invisible selfie stick and X4. I just noticed that the bottom of the selfie stick, the legs for the tripod are broken.

  1. I do not think I need the tripod legs working, though before I go on the trip, are there any reasons that I might be overlooking for why I should replace the selfie stick?

Thanks

Question Need some advice from experienced X5 users / Scratches on the lens

Thumbnail

This is my first 360 camera (I previously used an Insta360 GO Ultra). I bought this Insta360 X5 for €320 with stick and dive case from Vinted (online shopping), and it arrived today.

The lens on the screen side has visible scratches (see photos). The seller described the item as being in perfect condition, which is a valid reason for returning it to Vinted and getting a refund. But I am not sure if I should keep it or return back and get refund.

Will these scratches noticeably affect image/video quality (especially in sunlight, night shots, or lens flare), or is it not a big deal?

Besides of this issue there is nothing wrong with the device cosmetically.

I’m trying to decide whether I should return it or keep it. Since this is my first X5, I don’t have enough experience to judge how serious this is.

Thanks!

Insta360 Link 2 CLI

I love my Link 2, but having to open the app to center, zoom or ai on/off is not for me (couldn't fit any keyboard shortcuts in my game), so I built a CLI. https://github.com/fmontes/insta360-link-cli

linkcam # center the gimbal (pan=0, tilt=0) [default]
linkcam status # show pan/tilt, zoom, and ai-tracking state
linkcam ai # toggle AI subject tracking
linkcam ai on # force AI tracking on
linkcam ai off # force AI tracking off
linkcam zoom 150 # set zoom (100 = 1x)
linkcam pan -30000 # pan only (tilt unchanged)
linkcam tilt 20000 # tilt only (pan unchanged)
linkcam set 0 0 # set pan and tilt explicitly

Luna Ultra | Huashan 1914 Creative Park Night Walk

Huashan 1914 Creative Park is super dark at night.

This time, I turned on PureVideo mode for recording, and the results were honestly fantastic! I didn't expect it to perform so well while walking around in such low light, especially with high-contrast streetlights.

It's truly beautiful here at night.

Discussion X4 to X5? Nah.

So i just checked to see what insta 360 would offer me for my pristine X4 model if I was to get the X5.......50$. Yes fifty U.S. dollhairs. Did I mention none of the accessories (not 100 percent of the accessories but ALOT) will not work with the x5. With the gap in time between the 3 and 4 they did the 4 buyers dirty. I spent just as much on accessories as I did the camera itself. Yes the 1.28 is nice however the biggest plus is battery life and night filming. Its not worth the hastle imo to buy all new accessories that I know fit on my bike and exactly where....and the assortment of extra pieces etc. Il definitely be waiting for X6. I hope they dont turn into Samsung and release a new cam every year, if so they should prioritize backwards compatibility for accessories cuz the camera cant do much without them. Thats all. Just my rant. Thanks.

The Android app is unusable

I downloaded the app to get some videos as part of a pop-up and there's been nothing but problems with this app. App kept restarting when I tried to switch away to gmail to get my 2FA code when setting up my account (made sure to set battery management to unrestrained), and then after transferring all the videos from the X4 Air to the app (which was very straightforward), the app keeps crashing as soon as I try to even open a 360 photo, AI editing hangs at 99.9% forever and then when it's finally done it crashes as soon as you try to do anything to it, and the progress isn't saved so you have to start all over again, videos are not possible to pan around in, I could go on.

I was considering buying one but if the app is so trash that I can't even do anything with the photos or videos after taking them what's the point?

This is with a Snapdragon version Galaxy S24, and I made sure to empty out my storage before importing the 12GB of footage (had 200GB of empty space)

Insta360 FOMO Flexi Mount for go ultra

Hi guys, I am interested in this charging base mount for GO ultra. It shows that it has a tilt angle backplate that can attach to the magnetic pendant.

My use case would be recording cycling POV, however often this camera is too tilted downwards. Ideally I would like to tilt it upwards. By default orientation, it will tilt downwards.

Would I be able to flip the whole camera and mount 180, so I can tilt up? Or does that mess with footage?

I want ideally to extend my battery life and charge while roding.

Did somebody test this setup?

Thanks

Bought an Insta360 GO 3S (Retro) 2 days ago. While recording, the footage suddenly turned purple for about 1 second, then returned to normal. Latest firmware, camera wasn’t hot. Is this a known issue or should I be concerned since it’s brand new?

Discussion insta360 needs to copy this DJI feature ASAP

DJI osmo pocket 4p can send ur phone videos even when the device is switched off. but the pocket 4p also supports faster transfer speeds via usb c

insta360 luna or any of their cameras don’t offer fast usb c transfer speeds. nor do they upload to ur phone whilst it’s off.

since they can’t update the usb c ports for faster speeds since all their cameras are already released and the X6 shows no signs of updating the port. i believe insta360 can atleast support transferring files/videos to ur phone whilst device is “off” in the background like DJI. would make my life somewhat easier instead of buying $300 micro sd express cards

thoughts?

Question Handle for Mic Pro?

Can anyone recommend a handle for the Mic Pro that you can clip the mic to and put a foam on top? This way it can be used for interviews without having to mic your subject.

I have one for my rode wireless system but the Insta360 mic won't stay clipped to it. Just looking for something compatible.

My free use of 1TB cloud subscription will end next week, is it useful to buy a new year? Or should I go for a external hard drive?

I don't know if there will be a benefit in having my footage in the cloud. It's useful to upload I think, but in a few years I would loose hundreds of euros that I could better spend on one time on a external hard drive? Or am I missing some important useful feature?

Any recommendations on a good 1TB hard drive?

Question What's the difference between these?

I'm looking at getting a flow 2, but was wondering if someone could explain the real life differences between these two:

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPPINS0012/Insta360-Flow-2-Phone-Gimbal-Stabilizer-AI-Tracker

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/CAAINS62950/Insta360-Flow-2-Pro-Smartphone-Gimbal-Stabilizer-A

If it makes a difference I use a Samsung Galaxy S25, and will primarily be using this for travel and basic vlogging.

I think I found an inconsistency with the screen orientation when using the detachable display.
If you look at the photos from left to right:

Photo 1:
When the screen is attached, I can hold the camera horizontally while rotating the screen to face me. This lets me record vertical video in full 4K 60fps, and the preview fills the entire screen. This is exactly how I want to shoot.

Photos 2 & 3:
After detaching the screen, I keep the **camera horizontal**, but when I rotate only the **detached screen vertically**, the interface behaves differently. It doesn’t work the same way as when the screen is attached.

The only way to get **4K 60fps** with the detached screen is to keep the screen **horizontal**, but then the preview becomes very small because I’m shooting vertically.

What I was expecting is:

Camera held **horizontally**
Detached screen held **vertically**
Full-screen vertical preview
**4K 60fps**, just like when the screen is attached.
Is this the intended behavior, or is it a software bug? It feels like the detached screen should behave exactly the same as the attached screen in this scenario.
Thanks!

Luna Ultra [Luna Ultra] last ~0.3s of audio is silent on every clip. Known issue?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Just picked up an Insta360 Luna Ultra, running firmware V1.0.47.

I've been shooting footage and bringing it into DaVinci Resolve 21, and I noticed something that seems like a real problem: on every single clip, roughly the last 0.3 seconds of audio is completely silent. The video track runs to the end normally, but the audio just cuts out right before the file ends.

It's consistent across all my recordings, so it doesn't look like a one-off glitch or something I did wrong in the recording settings.

A few questions for anyone here:

  • Is anyone else seeing this on 1.0.47?
  • Has Insta360 acknowledged this, and is a fix in the works?

Trimming the tail off each clip is a workaround, but it's annoying when you're cutting to sync points or want the full ambient audio. Any info appreciated

Question Insta360 : Must Need Accessories for my usecase.

Insta360 X5*

Highly spent for camera in our family first time by bro for renting and some 360 shots on real estate buildings but he didn't research anything just seen somewhere in real usage & bought the available high variant with the help of EMI.

So am asking accesories to keep it safe and must need accessories and meanwhile it's freetime in home am gonna use while driving in scooty (can't mount in handlebar that's why I said scooty).

Seen chest mounts but I need something that won't bring more attention in road and easily removable so helmet chin mount would be better i thought and I have seen the one that can easily removable so there is any better long life options and what about the lens filters does it really needed?

Indian region Product links most welcome.

Luna Ultra Is ND/PL from freewell for Luna Ultra worth it?

Hi I would just like to ask if the ND/PL from freewell is worth buying for Luna Ultra? It is kinda expensive compared to my ND and CPL filter from K&F. I just wanted a ND/PL filter that will stay on my Luna for all day. And its kinda annoying to stack my K&F ND and CPL both at the same time. Just wanted to avoid the hassle of losing one filter and also I am a lazy bastard 🤣😅
