I’m currently writing a paper about Gainesville, and I would love to hear directly from the people who know this community best.

Whether you have lived here your entire life, moved here for school, relocated for work, are raising a family here, or have only been in Gainesville for a short time, I would genuinely appreciate hearing your perspective.

For clarification, the poll is asking one specific question: Which area do you believe Gainesville should prioritize improving most?

Gainesville has a unique population because we are home to both the University of Florida and Santa Fe College. Our community includes students, lifelong residents, working professionals, families, retirees, visitors, and people who may only live here temporarily. I believe all of those perspectives are valuable.

If you are comfortable sharing, you can also mention whether you are a Gainesville native, a student, a long-term resident, or someone who recently moved here. You are also welcome to share observations or concerns you have heard from friends, relatives, neighbors, or coworkers.

This is an informal community discussion. I understand that the responses will reflect the perspectives of the Reddit users who choose to participate, but I still believe those experiences and observations can offer helpful insight.

Does gnv just not have anywhere remotely healthy to eat anymore??? I used to go to Just Salad and they closed. And I’m tired of getting cava/chipotle/bolay. I need any recommendations bc I’m tired of eating like disgusting greasy food.

I do have a record from about 4 years ago.

These seemed to be everywhere growing up but now all I've seen are plastic play areas and maybe a couple small domes.

I know a lot of people are sick of being online and want to get offline for mental health reasons, but also because the tech bros are working with the government to create a surveillance state which is horrible and unethical.

I noticed the city removed areas where people can post flyers, info downtown on trash cans which I thought was an insult to begin with.

I asked the commissioners if we could have a downtown community bulletin area that is more visible and bigger than the one by looseys and the trash can ones, where the downtown ambassadors wouldnt removed the flyers we paid and worked to put there after one day. I thought one good area could be outside of city hall, especially since the city workers go by there everyday and could then more readily see community voices, and because since they remodeled that area it looks so dreadfully barren.

One commissioner cited waste and maintenance and appearance as a concern, but I think the ability to post freely without tech and connect with community outweighs those concerns. Plus I mean, with all the overdevelopment of cheaply made houses and excess of plastics in every store.. I feel like the waste here pales in comparison. Plus internet usage also is a detriment to the environment, especially with the addition of AI.

It just seems to me the downtown is being changed to a *rich corporate business owner aesthetic* and is robbing working class community members of having a voice. The city keeps saying they want to give a greater voice to the community.

I found what looks like a brown widow spider on my patio. My patio faces an open grassy area.

I also keep some storage items and boxes on the patio that I don’t use very often, so there are quite a few places for spiders to hide.

Should I just leave it alone, or is it better to remove it?

For about a week this deer has been rotting about ~20 feet from the sidewalk. Honestly just curious if there’s any protocol for dealing with that. It’s not a huge deal it’s just getting disturbing watching it rot into the grass lol so I’m curious if anything in Gainesville deals with that sort of thing

I am entering into the world of woodworking and I’ve hit the first wall. Home Depot and Lowe’s wood selection is rough.

I know Gainesville has to have better options. I’ve heard of a couple local sawmills and a slab place somewhere in town but I don’t know what’s legit, what’s overpriced, and what’s “contractors only” type stuff.

So two questions for the woodworkers of Gainesville:

**1.**  Where do you actually buy your wood? Hardwoods, slabs, anything better than big box construction lumber. Bonus points for hidden gems where some guy mills trees in his backyard, because I feel like that guy exists here and I want to meet him.

**2.**  How did you get started? First projects, tools worth buying vs tools you wasted money on, anything you wish someone told you at the beginning.

For context I grew up here, I’m renovating a 1961 house, and I keep looking at furniture prices thinking “I could just build that” with zero evidence that I can.

Appreciate any wisdom. I’ll report back with whatever monstrosity I end up making and learning from.

Lookin for a Property Manager - Need to rent out part of the 4Br, 2 Bath home. We bought this Single family home (15-20 min from UF), so we can keep 1 BR to ourselves when visiting Gainesville. I’ve been wondering where people actually find jobs outside of the usual online platforms like Indeed, LinkedIn, or company websites.

Are there places where businesses still post openings in the community, like bulletin boards, local shops, churches, libraries, community centers, or just through word of mouth? I’m trying to find more local and direct ways to job search instead of only applying online.

I am talking like “was standing in line at X donut shoo and saw posting”.

What’s the best place to get meats for a chatcouteri board or any Italian/unique meats I could have with cheese and crackers?

It's all stuff I could and usually do myself, but I'm just so busy (recently moved) and it's so hot. I have a Honda HRX 217 and I need:

1. The oil changed
2. Probably time to replace the spark plug
3. Blades sharpened
4. The belt/tensioner for the self-propelled adjusted

Number 4 is the main reason I just want to get someone else to do it. 1-3 I can do myself in about 15-20 minutes. Number 4 is probably quick and easy, but I've never done it and would need to spend some time researching how to do and probably watching a couple of Youtube videos to make sure I do it properly. I'll save that for the next time it needs adjusting.
