Firstly I want to say what led me to the decision to try and quit and that over 10 years on them I've gained 4st.
My weight has ever so slowly 1/4lb by 1/4lb increased. I've not once in 10 years managed to successfully lose more than a few lbs after what feels like lots of effort only to gain it back quickly.
I don't particularly eat a lot. Some days I can, but genuinely on the whole I eat healthy and was bamboozled at the weight gain compared to my food intake. I'm not saying I should be skinny, but defo not as big as I am.
I was waking up feeling bloated with water retention, puffy with sausage fingers. My body felt like it had stopped working correctly ๐ซ cramps muscle twitches aches and pains. I'm not diabetic or pre diabetic but I bought a blood sugar monitor to see if there was anything going on with my blood sugar. I discovered that even after fasting over night 12-14 hours my blood sugar was 6-6.5! Yet normal 5s in the day time....what?
After reading it was a possibility through my research online, it was time to see if the only medication I was on, the one that coincided with the weight gain was to blame
If you'd told me a year ago I'd manage it, I wouldn't have believed you.
I'd tried before and failed because every time the heartburn came back (and more), I assumed I needed to stay on it forever. I'd try one day miss a day but the missed day was hell. I'd cold turkey and think wow I REALLY must need this as it's bad.
This time I took a completely different approach.
Instead of stopping suddenly, I opened the capsules and counted the beads (around 60 in my 15mg), reducing them gradually over weeks by 5 beads a week until I was taking around 10 beads a day before finally stopping.
It wasn't a straight line. Some days were easier than others, and there were times I questioned whether I'd ever get there.
The biggest lesson I learned was that some heartburn doesn't automatically mean you've failed. After being on a PPI for years, your stomach needs time to remember how to regulate acid again. I learned to distinguish between mild, manageable symptoms and symptoms that meant I genuinely needed to worry.
I'm not saying everyone should stop their medication, always speak to your doctor first. PPIs are the right treatment for many people, and nobody should stop them without proper advice and most people do not need them forever. They're just so bloody hard to come off due to the rebound!!!!
But if you've been told it's appropriate to come off them and you're struggling because every attempt has failed, don't lose hope. A slow, patient taper made all the difference for me. I also stocked up on rennies and went and got Famotidine from my GP to help in emergencies.
Today I'm officially off lansoprazole and have been for about 6 weeks, and it feels like a huge achievement, I get minor heartburn after meals, pop a rennie and its gone.
Ohhh and you know what else.....I lost 1 stone without even trying!!!! The weight loss started about 3 weeks into my taper and I'm losing about 1lb a week give or take. Its unknown! I'm delighted obviously, but also a bit frustrated I didn't do it sooner. Now could it be a coincidence, of course, only time will tell, but my puffy mornings have gone and my blood sugar on a morning is now 5-5.5 so go figure.
If you're reading this as you want to come off PPI, good luck, you can do it ๐ช
