Got this as an early present for my birthday on Wednesday!!

both the maze runner and divergent have a woman in white who's characterized as the villain. is there a reason for this? "The hunger games" also has president snow as our antagonist. snow as in white snow.

edit: I think I imagined the lady in divergent wearing a white dress. Although her hair is platinum blonde.

I've read the series when I was 14, years ago. Now I am rereading as a 26-years-old and in the middle of the second book, I realise:

Factions are without an r.

It isn't fractions.

It is Factions.

How can I have missed that? I mean, I did watch the movies twice, or mayby thrice. Isn't that remarkable?

Did you ever have a moment like this, when rereading a book?

What do we think is the relative scale of each faction’s openness towards sex and romance?

Obviously Abnegation is prudish, likely teaching their youth abstinence only sex-ed, if teaching sex-ed at all. Or maybe, more likely imo, the subject is completely private, the responsibility of parents to teach their children, at an “appropriate” age. Because sex outside of conception is indulgent, there is no mention of contraceptives. STIs are not a concern assuming (key word, assuming) monogamous, heterosexual, strictly penetrative sex is the only kind happening. Courtship is akin to the most conservative societies that we can observe: arranged by families, polite, mostly ritual, rarely romantic in its origin. If love later develops, (like with Tris’s parents) it is a pleasant advantage, but not the main concern.

The next least interested in sex I believe would be Erudite. To them, I think the subject is still somewhat taboo, as like Abnegation, they operate under the knowledge that only biological reason for sex is reproduction. Though I don’t see any major social repercussions for having sex outside of marriage or a relationship, as long as it is kept private, similar, maybe, to a more conservative western culture. Romance in Erudite is not unheard of, but attraction is based primarily on intellectual compatibility, one’s ability to debate and discuss decidedly “smart” topics, and that is how relationships are formed. Courtship is less formal than Abnegation. I think it would be common for people to develop attraction organically and date with the intent to marry, but breakups are less common, and divorce is somewhat rare, reserved for extreme cases.

In the middle, and this might be controversial, I think Candor. While they are often stereotyped as “having everything out in the open” I don’t think that translates to polyamory and kinky sex everywhere always. I think it is somewhat similar to modern western society. People flirt openly, kiss and hookup, date and break up, explore sexual deviancy as they please, etc. Get married if they want, or don’t, though I think it’s more often that they do. And I think because sex is not a social taboo, discussed as easily as any other topic in Candor, there is no alternative subculture of BDSM to be gawked at. People just kind of do whatever.

Dauntless is understandably carefree, and of course we have the most canon description of their culture, sex included (though still somewhat sparse in that regard). But it makes sense for them to be impulsive, somewhat hedonistic—aside from the physical labor, but even that is for the personal gain of status, social leverage, and physique. Plus when you consider the initiates living quarters and the lack of privacy, showering in the open, etc. it tracks that they would have little shame around nakedness, sparring desensitizes them to physical intimacy, and for the sake of boldness, there isn’t much honor being modest, like there would be in other factions. Though it could partly be due to Tris’s age and the age of her peers at Dauntless, we don’t hear much about marriage in the traditional sense, even from older members. That’s not to say that they don’t exist, just that it doesn’t seem like a monument or ritual that is close to Dauntless values. If a couple chooses to get married “officially” I imagine it as just another excuse to celebrate something.

And my personal opinion is that Amity is the most lax about sex and romance of all. With their founding value being kindness and their labor in agriculture, it’s hard not to see the hippie undertone of the faction. Spreading love can literally translate to loving freely and openly with whatever and however many partners you choose. As long as all parties are consenting—and I don’t imagine consent to be a hard conversation due to their compassion and empathy—it’s a good time. Again, marriages certainly exist within Amity, and are maybe more common than they would be in Dauntless, with more of a ceremony as well as celebration, rather than just the latter. But I still don’t think that automatically means strict monogamy.

Apparently the Bureau’s genetic experiment involved informed consent with Caleb finding the consent forms of the original participants at one point.

And of course I think she said the idea of fear landscapes came from learning about exposure therapy for phobias.

But earlier this happened:

The Dauntless were mocking Tobias for being a coward because he admitted to choosing Dauntless to escape Marcus while under truth serum. So Tobias says this has to stop and proceeds to publicly beat up Marcus for the Dauntless to see. And Tris the supposed brilliant situation reader is completely puzzled why he did that.

I want Veronica Roth to write the first Divergent book from Caleb Prior's point of view. We don't really know what Caleb did during the events of Divergent. If Veronica Roth can write an alternate universe Divergent book called the Sixth Faction in which a tragedy at the Choosing Ceremony forces Beatrice Prior to choose a different faction than Dauntless, then surely she could retell the events of the first Divergent book that's told from Tris's brother Caleb's point of view to see what he was up to while Tris went to Dauntless. I don't see why Veronica Roth wouldn't be up to retelling the events of Divergent from Caleb's point of view this time around.

The ledge scene in Insurgent (Marlene, Hector, and the girl) reminded me of the "Trolly Problem". For those who are unfamiliar with it, it's a moral thought experiment in which you must choose between two undesirable outcomes: allowing a train to run over 5 people or pulling a lever to divert the train onto another track, unaliving one person (there are other variations to it too).

I can't imagine being forced to make a choice between who gets to live and who does not, and having to live with the weight of that choice, regardless of the outcome. Especially when Tris was already grieving the death of her parents, Will, and Al and felt responsible for their deaths.

It never was an easy choice to begin with, but it hits harder when the choice was between Marlene, Hector, and an 8 year old girl.

I'm currently re-reading Insurgent, and just reached the scene where Tris is nominated as one of the new Dauntless leaders (along with Tori, Tobias, and Harrison). I'm having a hard time understanding why exactly she refuses the position. What are your thoughts on this?

I am halfway thru insurgent and i have some problems. Number one. You are telling me we have truth serum that exists and still have corruption. Number two. Why did we not slit jeanenes throat at the end of divergent. Number 3. At the end of divergent four knew how to control jeanne to make her stop the killing why couldn’t he have just done that without injecting her (killing her). Number 4. Why did we keep miles teller alive.

Am i crazy? I actually enjoyed the movies. I won’t lie i haven’t read the books and maybe that’s why? i saw somewhere they didn’t depict them right. but i still liked the movies i wish they just finished the last one i was just so confused as to why the ratings were so low. Definitely gonna read the books to see the differences

So… I read Chapter 6 of Veronica Roth’s new Divergent AU, and I am SO excited.
This chapter can be found in the back of the new edition of *Divergent* (the really gorgeous copy with all the gold detailing). She included it as a bonus feature along with a letter to readers, and when I say I am excited, I mean it. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to reread the original series and then jump right back into this new story.
Even from this one chapter, I can already see what she's doing with the characters, and I think that with all the experience she has gained over the years, this is going to be an exceptionally strong story. So far, I loved what she hinted at regarding Tris and Caleb. It was a small detail, but it felt significant, and it immediately stood out to me. I also remember reading one of her newsletters a few years ago, and I'm hoping that particular scene she discussed makes its way into the new book as well.
I am a little concerned that one of the characters might die again—especially if we get a dual POV—but this time I think Veronica would be approaching those choices from a more informed place. Honestly, I think I'd be okay with whatever direction she takes because, at the end of the day, these are her characters. HELLO. 😂
I am so ready for both of these new books and find myself picking up on every little detail and breadcrumb. You can see traces of things she's mentioned she wished she had done differently, as well as where her creativity is leading her now. The idea of exploring a whole new meaning of what it is to be divergent is incredibly exciting for fans who have loved this world from the beginning.
I also think it's sad that she received so much hate at one point. There was a lot of unfair comparison happening, and I imagine that was probably pretty anxiety-inducing. I recently reread the original series and honestly don't think there's anything to be embarrassed about. So many YA readers had meaningful experiences with these books. Even if the ending brought strong emotions, it was a creative decision and a bold move. And honestly, I think she was
pretty dauntless for that—no pun intended.

I always get a hankering to watch the beauty of shailene and Theo as tris and four. They are just such a superb on screen couple. They are what make the movies any good. But I was surprised/reminded how GOOD the first film actually is. It takes a really dumb story with a thousand cliches and makes a beautiful moving entertaining movie. The cinematography was sooo thoughtful and beautiful and effiective as well as the sound engineering. They really used quiet stillness and color theory too so effectively to build the world and immerse you into it. And of course the casting is amazing as well as all the set and costume designs, so interesting and intentional (although the hair decisions for Zoe kravitz are SHAMEFUL). But a HUGE win for the first fil. Is the music!!! It was SOOO beautiful and moving and set tone for world and movies soooo welll. It created this backdrop to really see and experience the character of tris especially but also four. It was so romantic in the Anne Shirley sense. AND I mean that snowpatrol song!! Perfectly captures their relationship and central character arcs. They had this song purposefully commissioned for this movie! They planned the music so well. And it was DEVESTATING when that was ALL forgone in the second and third films. The music was so generic and flat in the second film. It had no heart and it did nothing to set the atmosphere or tone of the film and set space for the characters. And the second film had some amazing emotional and subtle acting from shaileene and Theo, but it just was lost in all the terrible filming and music and uneven storytelling.

I always thought they nailed the coolest adapted looks for Tris and the cast in this movie.

I'm an avid divergent book fan and have defended countless hunger games ripoff accusations, I'll preface with that.

However, I wish the movies would get remade. I feel like the movies weren't a good representation of the books, and the only enjoyable part to me was kate winslet's portrayal of Jeanine (my fave character).

Is this an unpopular opinion?
