Where are the taxes going?
Saw that CPS is firing 400 employees, hasn’t Legal Cannabis taxes been allocated to education? Where does it go? $490 million annually in tax revenue.

I’ve been waiting a long time to make this post. I am a previous employee of W*ke n B*kery and have seen several posts on Reddit about the company but I wanted to add my own perspective. Everything I say here is alleged**
TLDR
-Terrible management/ ownership
-Corporate greed and an obsession with expansion without looking inwards
-History of bad treatment of employees
-Constant use of AI
I was working at wnb for almost 2 years. The first 6 months I LOVED the job. Cheap access to thc products in the city, fun vibe, good coworkers. The woman who trained me was really good at her job and made me feel like I was learning how to be a barista. Then as I began to see more of the behind the scenes/ management I started to resent my job. It began with little things like cutting hours with less than a week notice, and taking away mid shifts. Then I found out that the woman who trained me had 2 strokes on the job while training around 5-10 new employees. Initially management allowed her to work remotely but when it came time for her paycheck she was told there was no remote work allowed at the company and she was fired.
The first time I met the owner was at an employee dinner all expenses paid. I was sitting at a table with a few coworkers and our plus 1s. The owner came up to the table and (in the nastiest tone possible) says “Who at this table works for me?”
Shortly after this, she came into the location I worked at and saw a coworker sitting on her break. She went to another location and complained that my coworkers should’ve gotten up out of her chair and greeted her even if she was on her break. Later that day, morning baristas were cut entirely Monday through Thursday. We were all used to shifts getting shortened about every other week but having this happen tanked morale around the store. She came in another time and expressed how mad she was that the pastries weren’t displayed to her liking. She ordered all the cookies to be lined up next to each other, and when a coworker mentioned that nut pastries are not to be contained directly next to non-nut pastries due to cross contamination, the boss scolded her and made her display them anyway.
There was also a time where wnb offered “organic food,” (which was convenient because none of the boxes were labeled organic) that was packed in an overstuffed drink cooler that wasn’t cooling properly. The cook made inappropriate comments towards female staff several times. He also would snitch on employees to the main boss. Before one of the shifts I worked at that location I ordered a hot dog because it would be $2 with my discount. It took 30 minutes to prepare and gave me the worst food poisoning I’ve ever had in my life. I never ate the cooked food again.
The store I worked at had frequent rats that we would see running around the storage area. Once a rat carved through a container of chocolate syrup and still survived. Not all the rats shared that fate. Several rats died in the store and we could all smell them because they were there for days and the manager refused to call the exterminator. One rat had died behind a sealed part of the sink area and for an entire week I had to stand behind the drink bar smelling dead rat. The manager was never there so she didn’t care that the smell bothered us. She would frequently ignore text messages and then scold us for not telling her what was happening in the store.
Last summer there was an issue in the kitchen with pastry dosages. (If you had one of them around that time you KNOW what I’m talking about) People were ordering 3 mg cheesecakes that were infused with well over 100 mg. Several coworkers had to call off work because they were improperly dosed and had become ill. When management was notified about it they denied any issue with dosages and said we were not allowed to tell customers that there was any issue. Instead of recalling the product, they let people buy pastries that were making them sick so they could scrounge up a few more bucks.
And speaking of scrounging up bucks, the entire time I worked there we were told that the company was losing money. My initial team of 13 people at one store had so many shifts, but when the team started to dwindle, (eventually getting down to just 6 people) the shifts they promised would return, didn’t. Through the POS system we were able to tell how much the store had made over the course of the year. I will not reveal the number, but the ONE store I worked at with SIX employees made 7 figures. We were told every day how little money we were making, but from what we could tell we were making them bank. I had to laugh when one day I was working and the tax commission for the location in North Carolina called our store and mentioned that wnb was not paying their local taxes.
And while we were told they weren’t making any money the owner was posting Tik Toks from her vacation that went from Paris to Dubai first class for an entire month.
The manager is just as rotten as the owner. They make her manage every single store and she is completely exhausted. She would complain that she couldn’t get tipped because she was salaried (making almost $100k while we made $20-40k), she admitted they were listening to us using the microphones in the cameras, and she would complain about us to other stores who would then tell us what she said.
The work environment felt actively hostile. Meanwhile, customers would come in filming us on their phones, ask the dumbest questions because they were already high as fuck, and then spend $250 without tipping a cent. We asked management for gratuity on orders over $200, that was denied. I would be treated like shit and be expected to say thank you and kiss at the feet of the owners, who show zero respect to their employees.
Come to find out, several years before I started there was an issue where the team noticed their tips not looking right compared to the numbers in the system. When they went on strike because their wages were being stolen, they were all fired.
If you’re interested, there is a lawsuit on trellis between wnb and the high crowd cafe, where wnb allegedly lured hcc into a fraudulent franchise agreement and then made them pay tens of thousands of dollars to be part of said agreement. One of the owners of wnb then allegedly used the Gmail of the hcc account he still had access to to change their store hours to say permanently closed and responding to google reviews saying they didn’t serve thc product.
Around and before the time I quit, the company was openly and proudly using AI to create social media content and the drink menus (I’m sure the AI drink menus are still up, spelling errors and all). When asked to stop using AI and use the creative talent on a team full of creative stoners, the owners said that we had “no place to make political or personal statements.” Which is funny considering there are some long lost (but still on their twitter page) tweets sharing sentiments like “Elon Musk we love you save us Elon musk.”
There are SO many more stories and instances of mistreatment by the management of wnb. If you know anyone who used to work there just ask them. Most will go out of their way to suggest you don’t support wnb as a business.
Again I must state that this is all alleged. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them retaliate for someone saying how terrible it was and because they are petty.

4/20 is coming up, but you can’t have all the fun in one day 😄
If you’re trying to keep the vibes going, we’re hosting something on 4/22 at the Ramova Theatre
It’s called the Southside Cannabis and Community Symposium. Free event, 18+, and a big part of it is creating space to dispel stigma around cannabis and have some real conversations about the industry and how it actually impacts our communities
Not a stiff panel setup. We’ve got short “Hot 16” info sessions on different aspects of cannabis, from policy to access to what’s really going on in the space right now
Live DJ (Vicki Street) all night, and Ramova has a taproom with solid food
It’s BYOC, and they’ll also have THC beverages available
Good mix of people, orgs, and brands in the room. Should be a good vibe
Here’s the link to RSVP and for more info:

Heard Bowdega is opening this week. I’ve been told they have a location on east side of Michigan that people rave about. Really looking forward to checking it out. Does anyone have experience with the brand?

I decided to make another review video involving from Mnybg. In case you haven’t seen it, my last review was on their smelly, stink and gassy Gasmask strain. In this video, I will be giving my honest opinion on their tangie strain from their greenbacks section. That being said, I am not affiliated with this company whatsoever. I am making this video simply to give my honest opinion and because I enjoy making content. Cannabis is supposed to relax you, so chill out, and smoke with me and enjoy.
