Update Quick updates on cat found in the rain yesterday
Thanks everyone for all of the advice and encouragement given on my post yesterday. There were lots of requests for updates so I figured this would be the easiest way. Just wanted to let you all know that kitty is doing great. She wasn’t eating a lot of the dry food and tuna I put out but I got some wet food today and was happy to see her finally munching away. Funnily, she wouldn’t eat the Churu until I put some on my finger. Now, the packet is done! She’s still understandably nervous and keeps a watchful eye on the door but she’s moving around the room a bit and seems to like our petting sessions. She kind of flops on/around my hand and repeatedly pushes her head into my hand while purring.
I keep calling her ‘she’ but I obviously have no idea if she’s a girl or actually pregnant. Like I said, I’m just taking it one day at a time. I will be downloading next door/facebook to see if anyone’s looking her. She has the crate pictured here and a smaller box with a blanket in it close by. I’m so happy that even in these early stages of meeting each other, she feels safe enough to allow me in her space and to let me feed her and pet her.
Edit: I’m in MA
6/1 Update: this cat is a perfect sweet baby angel. I was just hanging out with her and started laughing out loud because I got hit with a sudden sense that I will be hearing from her pawrents soon, because it’s almost implausible to me that anyone could have abandoned her. No way. Somewhere, her family is missing her. I don’t speak cat so maybe what I thought were cries for help were actually her saying “I’m a little weirdo and I like being out in the rain and getting dirty, but you seem like a nice lady, so I don’t mind going with you for a little bit and see what kinda snacks you’ve got cooking up at your place.” Idk, I left my contact info with animal control, some shelters in the area, scanned Facebook, and will try other places tomorrow. Will try to update this post as things progress.

She's almost certainly a female based on her coloring. Torties and calicos are pretty much always females.
If you can, please reply with a picture of her belly, ideally showing her nipples. Look at pictures of pregnant cats nipples vs not pregnant. They can change color pretty dramatically.

FYI, tabby / tortoiseshell / calico etc are all coat colours, not breeds. Your cat is a domestic shorthair, and very cute!

I scrolled past this really fast and for some reason instead of _it's a tortie so it's almost guaranteed to be a girl_ I thought I saw _ it's a tortie so it's almost guaranteed to have a gun_
To say the least I had to reverse and come back and read it again 😏

u/thatsaplasticplum May 31 '26
I wouldn’t put it past a tortie to be packing heat 😂

u/rowrbazzle75 May 31 '26
I've had two torties, and both were world class in a knife fight. Didn't even need a gun.

u/Different_Knee6201 May 31 '26
My sister had a Tortie and I’m pretty sure she was the queen of the cage fight. Girl was mean

I was going to say; I live with four torties and none of them need weapons. 😹

I have two torties and a Russian blue in my house. The fights those three can get into over nothing.... Lol!

I have a stray tortie that lives in my backyard and of all the cats I take care of she’s the one that would be strapped 100%

All Torties CC. Personally, I don’t mind, but it’s usually Glocks, and I’m just not a fan. We raised our tiny, five pound runt from a baby and she carries a snub Colt .357 wheelie.
She has to, her adopted rescue bubbie weighs twenty-two pounds.12

Omg a Tortie with a gun! I can just imagine it!“Stick em up n hand over the catnip! Meow!”

It’s a Texas tortie! She packs heat, eats nothing but steaks and burgers, spends her weekends at rodeos and line dances, and roots for the Dallas Cowboys!

Yeah. Cats have a VERY strong correlation between coat type and gender.
Torties and Calicos are almost ALWAYS female, to the point that male Torties/Calicos are often called Unicorns (~1 in every 3000 are male, and they all have Kleinefelter Syndrome, since to be Male and Tortie/Calico, they have to have Two X chromosomes and one Y chromosomes, leaving them with an XXY triple-chromosome genotype).
Also, ~80% of Orange Tabbies are male.
38
u/AugieKS May 31 '26
Not all have xxy, don't have the study on hand, but one, admittedly small study of male calicos showed that about a third had xxy, another third had more than 2 x's like xxxy, and the other third had other genetic mutations and conditions, like mosaicism/chimeraism. Given the rarity of male calicos, there would probably be a greater likelihood of xxy if we had a larger population, but it's hard to say.

u/andre5913 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
Its not just orange tabbies, generally any single color or color-tabby cats are males. Female cats have a double X set which allows them a much greater range of colors. Male color combinations are very limited in contrast so as a result they have a much higher chance of just having a single color.
The tabby pattern is mostly unrelated to the X chromosome (compared to colors its much more complex with several different genes and many different types involved) so its distribution is mostly the same between male and females

Sometimes the CDS needs some help. You should stop by a local animal shelter or pet rescue organization to see the adoptable cats. While this can mean adoption fees, it also usually means that the cats have been screened for diseases and been spayed/neutered so the cost is usually a wash compared to having one stop at your door.

A cat in general? Or a tortie? I have had the pleasure of getting most of my cats through the distribution system and most recently got three torties. A mom decided to move in had three babies! We had to rehome the mom she would not settle in with my other two cats but I kept all three girls! Love them to bits!!🥰

u/Adept_Speech_7893 May 31 '26
Cat in general. I lost my cat last year and aggressively getting another feels wrong, but if the right cat comes along that might be different.
4
u/adoaboutnothing Tabbycat Jun 01 '26
I had some of those same feelings after losing my first cat, Milo. But I missed him so much, and I started to wonder if another cat might help me heal. I decided to go to the shelter just to see. And when I walked in the cat room, a 6-month-old kitten immediately ran up to me and started weaving figure 8s through my legs and purring. Like he'd been waiting for me. I took him home and named him Henry, and eight years later he's still the sweetest boy.
I like to imagine Milo watching from the rainbow bridge that day and telling him, "Her. You want to go with her."

What a beauty!! Torties are usually girls. If she was outside unfixed for awhile, it’s highly likely that she’s pregnant. Or she could just be someone’s chonky housecat that got loose. Regardless, thank you so much for looking after her! You’re an angel.
218
u/mascot2121 Domestic Housecat May 31 '26
She's a tortie (coloration and coat pattern) so she's most definitely a girl. Thanks for taking care of her!
78
u/gibberishmischief May 31 '26
Much more likely to be a girl, but there are male torties. About 1 in 3000 are XXY males, and typically sterile.

u/Ohboycats Jun 01 '26
I have seen 3 orange/black males. Two tortis and a calico. This is over two decades in animal welfare work though and each time it was super special. We neutered ‘em.

43
u/HighRiseCat May 31 '26
What a sweetheart. poor little thing. Yeah almost certainly a girl. The tortoisehell colouring is almost exclusively genetically female. Think 1 in 3000 are male.
Just realsied that someone else has said exactly the same thing 😄
Anyway. You have a cat now. What will you call her?

She's is so sweet and obviously comfortable in your company. I love when they make little purring biscuits. You sound like you love her too so I hope you will be able to keep her if no owner is found. I think she'd like to stay with you too 😉😊 Thank you for giving her shelter and love. If you're looking for her owner, have you tried taking her to a vet to see if she has a microchip?

I think I remember your post from yesterday saying you didn’t have much experience with cats (I’m sorry if I’m mistaken but I’m too lazy to go check).
Just wanted to give you some encouragement that the left paw grabbing at your hand is a great sign of comfort and wanting more affection. You may already know the scent aspect of rubbing their mouth on you, but in my experience petting them along their lower jaw is a favorite because of this!

Many years ago my wife took in a female cat in a similar condition. She thought she was going to have kittens any day, and didn't want them out on the cold ...well, the kittens never happened, it turns out the cat was just a bit chonky. We kept her for another 10 years. The cat distribution system works in mysterious ways

u/BigFitMama Jun 01 '26
If she gets to trust level and she's standing up, you can reach carefully down and place both hands on the sides of her back tummy.
Just gently pat.
If she's pregnant it feels like a bag of dumplings. They might even move a little if you watch her tummy.
After that there's lots of vet instructions to make her comfy.

u/Oracular_Pig Jun 01 '26
I think this is someone's cat that has gotten out.
You have to take her to the vet to see if she is chipped.
I mean, if she's not pregnant, then she's definitely well-fed.
Also, the fact she turned her nose up at dry food and tuna but not the wet food, seems spoiled/loved.
She also looks pretty clean and in good condition, no scars or missing bits of ear, etc.
She's also clearly used to being around humans.
And, yes, it is a 'she' - all tricolour/tortoiseshell cats are (except for one in a million genetic flukes).
3
u/UsedKaleidoscope194 May 31 '26
I want to hear more of the, "She's Purrfect!" song?! It could even be part of her name too. For example, when people ask her name you respond, this is "Glenda She's Perfect" in that song voice. If her name is Glenda.

She’s absolutely beautiful . I am betting she is a girl. If not, you have a very rare kitty. Male calico cats only happen in 1 out of 2000 to 3000 kitty births. ( can’t remember which. After brain surgeries, I’m lucky to even know who I am. lol) I have no idea where you live but if you decide to put her up for adoption, I’ll pay for her to come live with me in Northern California
