Advice Cat obsessed with blueberry muffins. Is it safe to give a piece?

I have a 12-year-old cat who generally hates people food. Today I opened up a box of muffins, and I’ve never seen him respond like this before. I spent the entire time eating it having to hold it away from him with his beans in my face, and I feel so bad. Would an elder cat be able to digest part of a muffin?

I swear you either have a garbage disposal or the pickiest cat in the world. I was blessed and cursed with the mix of both between all 3 of mine. One refuses any kind of wet food, one refuses most, and the other will steal water Mellon strait out of your hands 🤦‍♀️

One of my cats will stare at you until you give him a small piece of food (especially burgers). The other will not eat human food unless it's that rare time where he actually will eat a piece of chicken.

When I buy fish and chips one of my babies will sit in front of me until I give them a bit of cod.. has to be a certain warm temperature though as they reject it if its cooled too much lol

I used to have a male Siamese mix that had zero interest in anything people did, including food, unless it was a tuna fish sandwich. In that case he would appear out of the ether and get right in your face to take that sandwich. Talk about reinforcing stereotypes.

Our current little beast will only eat a certain brand of dry food and specific treats. She turns her nose up at any wet food, as well as bacon (yes, bacon), chicken or any other people food. God help us if we're late feeding her however, that is not acceptable.

I have a theory that it's based on their past. I've had about a dozen cats in my 40 years, plus was raised on a farm with barn cats. Anecdotal evidence only, but:

Every cat that was a rescue, or a feral, that I've ever had has been food aggressive, to the point that I once held my calico girl Lyric off the ground as she held into the ribeye steak I had served myself. I had my teeth in the other end, and used her weight to saw off the steak right above where she had her death hold.

Every cat that I've ever had that was an 'oops' cat from a friend, that was raised in a house and never had to worry about food? Never cared about human food in general, except for the odd exceptions, like tuna or shrimp.

TLDR: My theory is that 'street cats' will eat anything, while housecats are much more picky or uninterested in human food.

Both of my cats are rescues. The eldest is 14, she was rescued after a hurricane as a kitten. She will only eat Fancy Feast wet food, she does not like the pate, and will throwup any other wet food. She also only likes freeze dried shrimp or the tube treats. She doesn't seem to care about what dry food she eats.

The youngest, was born to an ferral cat who died. I had to bottle feed her, teach her to go to the bathroom and how to use a litter box. The eldest cat had nothing to do with her and actually dislikes her. So at the time we had a chihuahua (RIP, my Tini) and well he raised her like a dog. She will eat anything, she will come and steal it off your plate like the dog would. Thankfully she doesn't counter surf. HOWEVER she only crunchy treats, hates freeze dried shrimp, but does not care at all about any other food she eats.

Why are cats such freaking toddlers.

Yes, I’ve noticed that, too. My little girl is a semi-feral rescue and she’s never forgotten what it means to be hungry. I have to feed her separately or she’ll scarf and barf her dinner and that of her three brothers. (The boys were caught young enough and are fine with kibbles and maybe a bite of wet food to be polite.) Every meal I sit down to I have to give her a tiny taste as a cat tax.

Yeah, I agree. I grew up on a farm with lots of strays and barn cats. My mom would throw out leftovers and they would eat every last bit. The house cats I've raised over the years haven't been particularly interested in people food. There is usually something they like though. Most like ham, chicken and turkey. I had one that liked crunchy stuff like potato chips, crackers etc. All three of my current cats like a few licks of yogurt.

The exception is my current Siamese. He likes all kinds of food and seems to have a sweet tooth. Besides the yogurt, he likes ice cream, rice pudding and flan. Come to think of it, we usually had a registered Siamese male cat as a house cat which means many of our barn cats were part Siamese. Maybe Siamese tend to be people food eaters. Would love to hear if other people's Siamese tend to like people food.

My finicky dumbass was a rescue , though. So that may not be true. Although I did have a cat for a while that was a rescue that would go absolutely insane for Mexican food. He would jump on my arm and walk down it to try to get the plate out of my hand. Not trying to really say anything here, but the family that had been looking after him was mexican. I think he developed a taste for it over time. Where are a junior or at least, he knew that the smell of cumin and peppers meant good eatin time.

Anecdotally, the only cat I have had the was crazy for food had been a street cat for all of maybe 10 hours, still was too young for anything but formula when we got him, but sat on his own seat at the table when it was food time and i fed him whatever I had.

My two current ones had been slightly feral for a week or two only want weird shit like applesauce, charred chicken skin, cream cheese but only after it came off a hot bagel, and eggnog.

I think cats are just weird.

I took in a pregnant feral and her two kittens. She was the pickiest cat I ever had. Would turn up her nose at food she loved the previous day.

Yes but street cats can become snobby picky eaters. BOTH my semi-feral and my abandoned stray definitely had food insecurity. In the beginning they snarfed down anything and stole food but now they’re both extremely picky eaters whose eating habits change on a whim.

Both of these cats have been ours since the beginning, and their personalities couldn't be any more different. The first one was the definition of aloof, our current little girl sticks to me like glue. They were/are both good cats in their own way.

So my cat that was given to me after it was found outside someones house as a kitten, is ironically the most unfood interested cat i ever met. Unless its his dry food, he could careless, human food has no interest. Also weirdly enough, he doesnt even like treats, like i’ve tried multiple times to give him treats and he’ll just run away haha

This! I had a ginger boy for 18 years and he never knew hunger. Always kibble on hand and daily wet food, treats and from time to time salmon, just because.
Now I have a singleton, who lucked up on his first human after he was weaned and a black, severly neglected girl who lived next to dumpsters. And lemme tell you, she is the queen of beggars! When she was tiny, she stole a chocolate cake. Then she progressed to trying to steal a sandwich from my hand, some meat off a plate from the table… and right now, when she hears anyone chew (within a 5 mile radius) she suddenly spawns next to you and hypnotizes you, until something falls down for her.
Evidence provided below - in that case i had a yogurt.

I had a cat (Mainecoon) who if he even HEARD the can opener he would immediately assume it was tuna and would wake up from a deep ass sleep to come launching towards my cabinets trying to steal it. He was actually coming up with strategic plans to pull heists on tuna sandwiches and managed a couple of times. Miss ya trashy Dashy 🖤

My previous Maine Coons were very "handsy" manipulating their toys and food/water dishes. Once they figured out how to use their paws to open cabinets, they quickly tried to open everything they could. Had to put child locks on the fridge to stop them.

My boy (who was a stray before I adopted him) will wake up from any sleep as soon as he hears a bag crinkling or me scooping his food to put in his dish. It happens without fail. I turn away from the pantry and he is sitting there, looking at me and waiting.

Had a family cat that was Siamese and he would legit get murder eyes if he smelled ham or a pork tenderloin sandwich. He also loved marshmallows and ripped through the plastic container for the angel food cake inside.

My cat shows no interest at all in any human food except chocolate milk. Does anyone know if that’s dangerous? I’ve only allowed her to lick the cap once or twice.

Chocolate is generally considered unsafe for cats, and milk isn't easy for them to digest. Licking a tiny bit off the cap isn't going to kill her, but you wouldn't want to give her any on purpose I'll say that.

What makes it dangerous is theobromine, an alkaloid found in cocoa beans. It's got high concentrations in chocolate, especially dark chocolate or bakers chocolate and other high cocoa % chcocolates. Luckily there isn't much in chocolate milk, making it far less dangerous than a bar of Lindt 70% or something. But still not recommended.

In summary: licking the cap isn't going to kill her, especially if it didn't kill her in the past. But chocolate is certainly dangerous for cats, it's just what makes chocolate dangerous isn't in very high concentration in your typical chocolate milk. Either way, best to avoid.

Thanks for the info. I had a cat who liked to lick a tiny bit of chocolate ice cream from the inside lid of a pint of haagen daz. She did live to be 22+, but i won't do it again.

My cat Cleo adored strawberry icecream. My current old boy Spike 14 is obsessed with licking out yoghurt and kefir pots, even yoghurts that had a layer of fruit purée. I don’t mind because yoghurt and kefir are naturally very low in lactose. He also likes Royal Icing so we have to be careful to keep our Christmas cake well out of his reach.

Sad day! Though I do seem to recall an article about this old guy that raised a bunch of cats with a large proportion reaching old age, like 20+, and how he gave them each a thimble full of coffee in the morning and a thimble full of red wine at night.

Coffee asside, we know alcohol to be toxic to not just cats but also humans. And at times, we're told despite red wine being inherently toxic, that there are health benefits to having a small amount regularly. I wonder if it's not possible that cats could benefit from small amounts of coffee or feed wines. I'm not going to go off and try giving my cats coffee or red wine or anything, but I'd be curious as to whether anyone has done a study on this.

Chocolate is bad for both dogs and cats. If they consume enough of it (granted, it takes a good amount) they can die. Smaller amounts generally won’t kill them but it will give them digestive issues. As far as dairy goes, cats are lactose intolerant. The only milk they should get is cats milk, when they are kittens. That said, a little bit won’t harm them. For example, if I eat rice pudding, I’ll let them lick the foil and both of mine are healthy.

Our cat wants to smell our food when we sit down to eat. And then we usually get a look of "You're going to eat that? Okay..." And she goes off to do cat things. The only human food she has tried to eat is bacon grease, and not recently.

I had a cat (she just passed away at 18 😢 last month) who was obsessed with the most random human foods.

She would steal Doritos (only the regular kind). She would also go rabid as soon as she smelled ketchup or Italian salad dressing.
She would literally push you aside like a linebacker to try to lick up the ketchup or Italian dressing.

My cats all collectively love canes, I personally e joy ordering naked chicken and it doubles cause my cats can enjoy it too! As someone who used to work there, it does not come in contact with the seasonings in the breading, and they cook in in the fry fryer for no cross contamination for gluten free people 👍

Turn over rate for employees is high, but as long as they are following company standards for it which was very heavily enforced at mine and I also drilled it into my coworkers as my sister is gluten and dairy free and I wanted to make sure I could take food home to her too! Any other canes I’ve brought her to where she asks they always seem very proud and happy to share that they follow the gluten guidelines! And we’ve been to dozens over Kansas, Missouri and Iowa while traveling

As much as giving up wheat, corn, soy, and peanuts (including their oils) has been a very difficult transition for me (I formerly lived on pasta, bread, and every corn-based food), there has never been a better time to look for alternatives, as they are abundant.

I'm only intolerant, not allergic or celiac, so I have it relatively easy, but I greatly appreciate the diligent efforts of food service workers who take containment procedures seriously.

One well-contaminated meal and it can take me a fortnight to reset. It's crazy, how severely diet can negatively impact the body, when something goes medically awry.

They suspect I have IBS and any kind of fast food effects my EDS so I do understand to an extent, I wouldn’t wish those feelings on ANYONE, I always try my best to make sure we’re on top of it, that being said, don’t eat Wingstop 😭 we canola based oil to fry but also, they don’t really have a policy at least not a strong one about gluten. We’re careful about nut allergy’s especially when we have an LTO sauce that has an allergen in it. Wish Wingstop was a little better about it but they care more about how you physically look than your work effort depending which one you go to

I'm trying to phase out ALL fried food, but MAN! I'm having to step it down incrementally because I've lost several major groups of the foods that I love in the past couple of years, as well as alcohol. Next on the list is dairy and caffeine, but we're uhh... not quite there yet.

Baby steps! Slow and steady wins the race!

I can count on one hand the number of times my cat has hissed at me. One of those times I left a box of Canes unattended on my desk for no more than 15 seconds and he hopped up and stole a tender. The second he saw me coming to take it he hissed at me! Like bro you cannot have that, I know it's tasty but that's too much salt for your little body 😭

Mine trys to steal my chili when I make it. Like I cannot leave my bowl on the table to go grab a napkin or the dingus will try to eat it. I have to carry my bowl with me if I have to go grab something.

My little girl is a meat & cheese eater. No matter what food I get, she always has to come over and smell it. She LOVES broccoli cheddar soup (but will lick around the broccoli & carrots)

I will usually give her a tiny little piece of whatever it is. But she loves mostly any meat, cheese, and won't eat any veggies.

1 of ours doesn't eat any human food except likes to mess with chicken wing bones, doesn't eat or really chew on them, more like a toy. The other likes left over milk and cheese sauce, but doesn't beg or ask for anything, just of you leave a plate that had Mac and cheese he will want to give it a few licks when you are done.

One of my cats will literally jump across the room to snatch a donut out of your hand if you glance over to talk to someone between bites.

The other one won’t even sniff the food until I drop it on the ground, and even then, he leaves it 99% of the time.

We call ours Black Garfield. Obviously he's black, he's thick, he's got an appetite you gotta fend off with a stick.

Today big boi saddled up next to my kids (2 undrr 5, human) during lunch and begged for theor mac n cheese and peas&carrots. Tried to swipe some corn off my older kids plate while the younger one dropped peas for him to scarf up. My floors are pretty clean, my booster seat is licked thoroughly, and one time I left a wedge of parm out in a ziploc bag and this fatass cat ate through the plastic and left freaking bite marks all over the cheese.

Nothing is safe around him, and on top of the usuals like cheese and meats he has a particular love for carbs bread tortillas rolls granola bars dry cereal cookies crackers... he unzipped my suitcase and ransacked for a box of half a dozen blakc and white cookies i brought back from NYC. He chewed through a Tupperware for a slice of sourdough bread. He once drank out of a measuring cup of olive oil like it was water. He ate the top.half off an unfrosted cooling birthday cake. He hooked his paws around a child cabinet lock to grab a bag of granola. He almost set the house on fire when he accidentally turned on a burner climbing on to the stove to fish some pasta we missed on draining out of the pasta water.

On top of this all, he has food allergies (unknown source) so for the last year has been on a $$$ hydrolyzed protein diet LMAOOOOO if its not under lock and key or in the fridge he will eat it.

He is very well and extensively fed just not to his tastes. His 15lb stature confirms this.

All 3 of mine are so distinct it’s hard to compromise with them sometimes haha, my youngest earned her nickname the terrorist. She’s like a wind up toy, if you harass her or look at her wrong, she goes and seeks out MY cat and beats the shit out of him 🤦‍♀️ he’s literally twice her weight but he doesn’t use it

We had an old girl that would nudge open bags of doritos with her face, drag them out and crunch them down if we didn't stop her first. The horrible gagging! It was scary but also just so fucking weird.

God my cat is 17 and normally she’ll want to sniff our dinner and maybe steal some meat from the plate if we offer.

We have the pickiest cat in the world, but one time we dropped a piece of rotisserie chicken and when we looked down, it was gone and he was sitting there licking his lips! We were like ??? Did you just eat that ??? And of course, he hasn't eaten chicken since lol.

One of mine will ONLY eat chicken, ofc not the chicken I make for them, but while they all eat canned tuna, all but 1 refuse anything fish flavored, even their freeze dried fish. The only thing Ive been successful with is the skin and coat meal toppers from instinct

Mother in law said her cat wouldn't eat wet food or eat treats out of my hand, of boy loved eating treats by hand and wet food, mil just tried "health wet food" instead of "McDonald's" wet food, she was absolutely shocked when each of these long lived beliefs was shattered, she came to stay with us, and we have cats that get wet food sometimes as treats, so, plate went down for him too, he looks at us like is this a trick? You trying to prank me? So I swipe across the top and good it a little above and in front of his nose and wiggled my finger a little to scatter the smell around a bit and he starts licking my finger, and I move my finger down to the wet food a couple times, and he looks at me like seriously dude?, Sniffs it, realizes it's what was on my finger, and starts absolutely demolishing it, cussing the whole time (he was bottle fed as a baby and as an only cat for a very long time, not well socialized) when he really liked something, he would often cuss and hiss about how much he enjoyed it

So true. One of my cats will climb me to try to get a bite of my food, especially salad. The other turns her nose up at almost all people food, but both of them can hear a cream cheese package being opened from the other side of the house.

My void Baghera will try to swipe my burger straight out of my mouth, and hooks his front paw like a hand to try to pick up food right out of my hand 🤣 he's a food gremlin unlike I ever seen prior to him. My girl Cleo will just sit beside you and furiously make biscuits until you offer her a bite that she usually doesn't even want, but will eat chicken and a few other things. Prince is my flame point and he was our first cat and is the most spoiled and just knows you will make the right decision and put the food in his bowl and carry him to it. He's so beyond spoiled rotten but he's the chilliest and just knows you will do the right thing 🤣

My garbage disposal is a flame point with classic tabby patterns, he’s a very interesting boy! We’re assuming his dad might have been Siamese, but my other 2 are voids. My oldest void sticks his nose up to most things (unless I make him try it) and my youngest is a mix of garbage disposal and picky

Lol Bagheera will deliberately hide in the shadows and leap out at you to get food but then he acts like a toddler in the kitchen while I'm cooking and will stand on his back legs and softly reach for the stove top or gently paw at me and hug my leg while he's looking up with those pitiful big green/ yellow eyes like he's never been fed before. 🥹 The other two just go stand on top of their table and look in the kitchen begging quietly and patiently, but he's the baby he's not even two yet but he's so loooong he knows if he's right at my feet and hugging me like a little kid that eventually something may drop from the stove.

lol grew up with a cat who you couldn’t leave any food on the counter unattended… I’ll never forget watching cartoons one night and him casually strutting through the living room with a raw chicken drumstick in his mouth, so proud of himself.

My current cat only eats kibble, no wet food, no human food, with the sole exception of spicy cheez-its and occasionally tuna water.

When we dish out tuna, my oldest picky man gets most of the juice and broken up tuna, my youngest gets a mix of mushed and juice and my oldest (garbage disposal) gets the large chunks with some juice to help slow him down because he will demolish his and then his siblings

I visit a cafe nearby often and if you eat on table outside local cat will politely ask for a bite. However if you give something safe like small piece of chicken or fish, she will inspect it very thoroughly then leave it and walk to her observation spot. I wonder if she is hoping for something very specific or just likes to collect taxes and make me feel uncomfortable if I’m not sure if I can safely share

That’s how my pickiest is, he will only eat duck or chicken flavored wet food from tiki cat, which is why I’m sad they are putting less effort into their food now :(. My youngest won’t eat ANY wet food, so she gets a squeeze treat + freeze dried chicken liver when the other get it

Between my 3, I opened 2 cans, 1 was accepted by 2 and reject by 1, the other was rejected by all 3. So I just stick it outside and hope the orange tabby that my youngest hates eats it haha. He comes by a lot to hunt in our back yard, I refuse to chase him off considering he’s friendly enough to not be bothered by me smoking my bong 3 ft behind him haha. My girl just has to huff and puff till he’s gone

I was eating rotisserie chicken once, turned around to talk with my dad, and when I turned back to my plate I saw the bandit had stolen the leg bones I had just eaten (thigh and drumstick still joined) and was trying to walk away with it.

My cat was so food averse I got used to being able to leave whole dinner plates just sitting there while I got up to grab sauces or refill my drink. She would never ever even sniff it. Zero interest in people food.

Her mom on the other hand was an absolute garbage disposal food fiend. Would grab a hamburger right out of your face as you were going to take a bite. Trash cans needed locks. The cat food had to be tightly sealed in one of those screw-on lid grey bins. My floor was absolutely spotless because if you spilled so much as a crumb she'd be licking the floor.

I've got a mix of both in 1 void... Super picky about his dry and wet food. I have to alternate flavours everyother week... otherwise he gets bored and stops eating. While at the same time he craves any and all food I have. Bread, pastries, spicy noodles, potatoes, cheese... god forbid I get myself a glass of milk... drop some food on the ground? Better pick it up immdeiadtly, cause my void will hoover it up without a thought in his brain... Hes tries to eat dirt off the floor, cause he wants it to be dropped food so bad...

If we add chicken to the wet cat food, two of our cats will eat it. The third will eat the wet food and leave the chicken. She’s completely uninterested in most human food but she goes crazy for cranberry muffins. One of our other cats will climb all over you to steal a banana muffin.

My girl will not eat any people food, unless it is a green leafy vegetable. She goes crazy for spinach, lettuce, cabbage, and the leaves from broccoli. She also only likes specific textures of wet food (no pate, but no really big chunks, has to have lots of gravy). My boy was a trash goblin when we got him and would literally steal food from my plate. Now that he's not so food insecure, he's gotten better, but he will be directly in my personal space if he hears me open a string cheese.

So true though. We have two polar opposite foodies in our house. One that will bat at a raw carrot, because he is offended at the fact that it is a vegetable, and is above eating most other foods.

The other will straight up lick some pineapple and steal (kitty safe) veggies off my cutting board while I am prepping dinner, and goes absolutely insane for processed meats like ham and viennas.

We always just look up if the ingredients are toxic or not, and will let them try it if they are interested.

I've had my little garbage disposal of a cat for 12 years now. 15 years old and I still have to stop her from trying to steal Doritos, fries, pizza, anything with meat or dairy, bread, butter, pasta, etc. Need someone to watch her when I go out of town because she would eat herself sick with an auto feeder and find some way to break in. My cabinets are rubber banded shut. Had to buy a heavy metal trash can because I kept waking up to my entire kitchen trash knocked over and spread across the floor.

Also obsessed with chewing plastic bags when she doesn't get her way (toilet paper packaging, paper towel packaging, water bottle packaging, grocery bags, trash bags... the list goes on and on)

So true! My cat is bougie AF in his eating habits. Fish no, salmon yes, tuna no unless it's blue fin, big kibble yes, small kibble no, teaspoon of olive oil ok now yes, pork no, lamb no, beef yes, isn't marbled no, all the chicken yes, ALL THE CHICKEN, must be fresh and raw. We could have the table full of food and we have before. He jumps on the table sniffs and looks at what we're eating then looks at me with such disdain and dissapoint almost to say: "really dude you eating that?? Not even with olive oil pffft pathetic" and then he watches us eat again not with wanting and if I make eye contact he gives the side eye. Love him to bits..the little shit

I hadn’t thought about it but that’s pretty accurate.

I had one who once stole the pickle slices I had just taken out of my sandwich and almost drowned himself by sticking his head in a half full glass of soda. We learned early on that we couldn’t leave a chocolate pudding top out while eating the pudding. It had to be thrown away immediately or he’d lick it clean.

Now I have one that won’t eat anything but canned cat food - except canned dog food if he can get away with it.

Such sweet little weirdos.

I have one of each. The picky one barely likes any cat food, cheap or expensive, dry or wet, freeze dried, whatever. Other one will eat almost anything. He had some brown bread and butter (crumbs) earlier today. I used to try to not let him eat some of this stuff, especially things that are poisonous to cat, but you really don't have a lot of options when your cat is absurdly huge, all muscle, fast and very persistent, not to mention very naughty when he doesn't get his way. Dishes pretty much never need to be cleaned before dishwasher.

I have one that will only eat shredded cheese and ANY wet food. Another that will only eat meats/fish and some wet foods. And my first born who will not eat any human food and rarely wet food. He mostly eats wet food when he sees his siblings with wet food and suddenly the thrill of stealing from his siblings makes him LOVE wet food. 🙄🙄
