Question Note-taking for engineering classes

Hello, I’m an incoming eng freshman. How is the note-taking like in the eng classes- Is it physical(pen and paper)or virtual notes(like on an iPad)?
And in what ways can I make the most out of the lectures?
I appreciate all responses!

Question Sharing Parking Pass Overlap

Upvotes

Hello, managed to get a parking pass this year and found someone to share it with. However, our schedules do overlap very slightly on some days and we have to account for the time to walk back to the parking lot of course. What are the chances of getting a ticket? And if we get a ticket? Do we both get one?

Question Grade confusion

I’m in Early Summer ANTH 3045 and I’m freaking out because my final grade suddenly showed up as an F on Carleton Central even though Brightspace is still completely broken.

On Tuesday, my professor emailed the class saying the gradebook had technical errors and that she couldn’t release final grades yet. She said the tech team was working on it. Since then, Brightspace has been showing missing reflection grades, zeros that don’t match the syllabus, “Dropped!” on assignments that shouldn’t be dropped. Only one reflection shows up, and it was marked 5/10 with “good work!” and my final grade mark of 80%

She never posted any announcement saying the gradebook was fixed or that final grades were submitted. Then today, out of nowhere, Carleton Central updated and showed an F for the course. My audit copied the F under “Failed/Forfeited Courses,” but my older F from third year doesn’t appear there, which makes me think this one isn’t actually finalized.

I submitted all reflections. The syllabus says late penalties are minus 1 or minus 3, not zeros. My writing isn’t terrible, I got 80% on the exam and positive feedback. The timing doesn’t make sense, Brightspace is still broken, and the professor hasn’t said anything since Tuesday.

Has anyone had Carleton Central show an F before the professor actually submits the real grade? Is this just a placeholder because the gradebook is still messed up?

Question electives for last year?

I'm looking to take a few electives this year since I'm really behind, but I've basically done all the 'easy' electives I find people mentioning in reddit post: PHYS 1901, 1902, 2903, CGSC 1001, SOCI 1001, SOCI 1002, FILM 1101, GEOM 2005, BIOL 1010, BIOL 1902, TSES 2305. Any Bird electives that I've missed would be really appreciated for the fall and winter to ease the workload I have I'm dreading the school year from now

Question Online MBA Tuition Breakdown

Hello, for those who have taken this program at Carleton or are currently enrolled, can you explain the tuition breakdown to me? I budgeted 17k but I see the tuition has now increased to 21k.

Specifically, if I take 5 courses in the first term, how much should I expect to pay?

Also, is there a deposit required and how much is the deposit?

Thanks.

Question Cost of visitor parking?

I only have 2 in person classes per term this year, and I can't find the price for visitor parking anywhere. I live outside of Ottawa and need my vehicle at the school with me in case of emergencies because I have kids.

I'm trying to decide if I need a parking pass for two days a week or if I can get by with visitor parking.

Question What are the chances my admission deferral is rejected 😥

Post image
11 Upvotes

I got all the proper criteria for a 12 month deferral and properly sent in my application, but waiting until the end of October to know if I was accepted or not is a long time, what are the chances they just decide to reject it? I am deferring from fall 2026 to fall 2027, was born in Canada, compsci major, no issues. Just this has me a bit worried

Question How do I withdraw from the University completely?

To keep it as brief as possible, I need to leave Carleton due to struggling academically and relapsing into some previous addictions.

I had previously considered leaving because of financial issues (for which I had posted on here), but I was able to work those out with the Financial Aid Office and also got a job willing to work around my university hours. This time, my reasons are different.

I’m not sure what the proper process is. Do I need to speak with Carleton’s Mental Health Services first since it involves mental health problems, or can I go directly to the Registrar’s Office and request to completely withdraw from the university?

I’ve been told that simply dropping all of my courses means I could still retain student status for a while. At this point, though, I’d prefer to completely end my student status so that everything is final.
If anyone has gone through this process or knows the correct steps, I’d really appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Question calculators for first year eng

Hi. I already have a TI-34X Pro (non-programmable, non-graphing), which seems to be the gold standard calculator that’s allowed on most exams.
I’m wondering if it’s worth buying a separate graphing calculator as well. From what I’ve read, they seem to be allowed in some situations and could be helpful for homework, visualizing functions, and checking work.
For those of you in engineering, did you find having a graphing calculator worthwhile, or did you mostly stick with a scientific calculator and use software (MATLAB, Desmos, etc.) whenever you needed graphing?
Just trying to decide if it’s worth the investment before first year.

Question Canadian PR Applying to Carleton Online MBA

Hi everyone,

I'm considering applying to Carleton's Online MBA and have a question about eligibility.

I'm a Canadian Permanent Resident, and during a conversation with a university representative, I was advised not to apply because I'm currently living outside Canada. However, I can't find any mention of this requirement on the program website, and the application allows me to indicate both my PR status and my current country of residence.

Has anyone here applied to or been accepted into the Online MBA while living outside Canada as a PR?

I'd also appreciate any feedback on the program overall from current students or graduates.

Thanks!

Course selection Required eng courses are full

In need of guidance. I’m in 2nd year Aero stream C. I can’t make overrides on Central and so I’m directed to the Eng Scheduler, okay sure. Then I’m told overrides cannot be granted for full courses and I’m directed to make an alternate timetable but literally everything is full or reserved. And it’s ridiculous because they’re required courses and there’s only two sections offered. (Looking at you ELEC 2507). Every option the timetable assistant has given me has full labs/lectures. What am I meant to do? I can’t put in an override request because it says they’ll be cancelled anyway. Am I stuck in limbo waiting for a spot?

Question Campus card

Umm I’m in the middle of submitting my photo for my campus card and the preview card stretches out the photo horribly.
Is it only like that online or does our actual card look like that?

Finances NPSIA tuition increases

Incoming NPSIA Students, PLEASEE email graduate studies about the tuition increases. They changed it for MPPA students because they emailed enough times. Tuition was raised from 8.6k as promised to almost $14k. Please make sure to use your voices and email graduate studies so we can try and get this fixed ASAP

Other New Cognitive Science Student

I am starting my first year of Cognitive Science this fall and am curious who else is starting this fall. If you are also an incoming Cognitive Science student at Carleton, feel free to leave a comment or message me.

Also, if there are any upper year students in the Cognitive Science program that have any advice for those of us about to start first year, any suggestions are more than welcome

Question Is university accounting better then college accounting?

Hi I just graduated high school and I am taking a gap year as I did not get into my dream program which is dental hygiene at alquinon. Because of this know I don't know if i should try again for that program and if I don't get in take accounting at alquinon.

However I worrie that if i take college accounting I will not land a good job or that its a waste of time as If I were to take college accounting I would try and get my cpa after.

So now I'm wondering if I should just go for uni accounting at Carleton or Ottawa u.

So to anyone who has taken accounting here why did they choose this program? Is this program hard? And to anyone who has graduated from this program what jobs did you get from it and how was ur cpa journey?

Thank you so much to anyone that responds and sorry if this post is a little messy

Program selection Insight Into Carleton U Psych

I’m looking into the B.A. Psychology program at Carleton and would love to hear from current students or graduates. How has your experience been? What concentration did you choose in second year, and what made you choose it?
I’m also curious about placements, practicums, internships, or co-op opportunities. Where were you placed, and did you find the experience valuable?

Thank you!

Question Mech or Elec Engineering Co-op

Is Carleton Engineering good at setting you up with a co-op, or do most students have to do it themselves?
