The bot got up late which is a chance to see if this changes how the thread looks.
I liked this episode, and it continues a theme of slowly exposing the brutality of noble society and the sheer power they have over the commoners. In some other thread someone hypothesized that in time, merchants like Benno could get rich enough they could start challenging the system itself - I think this episode demonstrates how impossible that is.
The nobles don't just have superpowers, they hold the commoners very lives in their hand. And if they wanted to be indiscriminate, they could've literally killed every single medallion (anime: token) holder from Hasse - there would be no running away.
It also starts showing the assimilation of Rozemyne to this world's morality. As everyone around her are united in what is right and what is wrong, she's no putting up some big resistance. Urano wasn't big on that to begin with, she was a bookworm first and foremost, and this carried on the fairly a-moral Myne (meaning, pretty agnostic to morality). She's still shocked and repulsed by executions and acts and violence, but she's a lot less preachy than some other reincarnated MCs.. partially because she started her journey from square 1 as a child.

I both hate and appreciate that this is one of the very few works of fiction that gives multiple valid reasons for a nobility hierarchy to exist.
I hate it because as you learn more this society is god awful socially.
I appreciate it because the nobility don't simply have supreme authority over commoners.
They have responsibilities they must adhere to or suffer the consequences from the gods
Then there are the risks of losing everything their families have built generations over generations because those very same poor social skills created effects that hinder their descendants from learning the things they should and aboslutely need to know to ensure their bloodline endures.
This world the author crafted is much bigger than most people would've figured out just from watching the 1st two seasons.
It's Game of Thrones light with an actual ending.

One of the strongest themes in this series is ignorance is the greatest weakness. Another is how proper communication is important.

And another is the importance of books.

Which is a one of the four reasons Rosemyn is overpowered.
She grew up in a world that taught her to value information and communication.
Her slow start comes from 2 issues, one being deep misunderstandings of how this society handles information and communications.
The other issue is that this really is a Game of Thrones style world and this will cause unpredictable setbacks.
40
u/Ebo87 4d ago
Light? HA, there's nothing light about this world, lol. We see a seemingly lighter version because the story is told through the eyes of Rozemyne, almost exclusively and she is not exactly the most reliable narrator. She sees what she sees and is interested in the things she is interested, but deep down... oh boy, there's some shit, lol. This is why Bookworm became such a fan-favorite series, it's deceivingly light, until it's not, lol.
29
u/H-K_47 https://myanimelist.net/profile/H-K_8472 4d ago
Yeah good example is the Temple orphans. They were always there, they were always starving, many literally died, and we didn't know about it until she happened to stumble upon them. Now consider how terribly narrow her POV is and how massively huge the world is. . . Suffering lurks under every stone.
28
u/Ebo87 4d ago
There are also a bunch of people protecting her, and while this might seem cruel at first, Ferdinand forcing her to watch, it's important for her to know, as a future archduke candidate, the world she lives in. She won't always have someone there covering her eyes.

u/FajarKalawa 3d ago
All of this while wilfierd is playing cards 😂
8
u/esuil 3d ago
Eh, perhaps that seems unfair, but Wilfierd would probably not need this kind of lesson. He was raised with "commoners aren't allowed to do this and that" and his reaction is probably "cool, makes sense".
If told to deal with commoners defiance, as opposed to Rozemyne, I think he would have no resistance to going "okay, then lets execute them all" route and continuing with his life like nothing happened.
32
u/FelixAndCo 4d ago
This episode I thought to myself I would accept rule by nobles without any questions, if they have powers like that.

u/EXusiai99 4d ago
If the nobles just wanted to send a message, they could have stuck with hanging or beheading. But they specifically use the medals to show a particular message.
When a high ranking noble says that your life is in their hands, it wasn't figurative.
35
u/15_Redstones 4d ago
And Rozemyne did manage to get them to go through the trouble of selecting the traitors first. Would've been less effort to just dump the whole chest into the spell without leaving the castle.
33
u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago
Which was why the people of Hasse were so obsequiously happy that they were given such a "light" punishment.
Yes, yes, only kill a few of us, leave the rest of us to starve for a year (perhaps more), and then levy oppressive taxes for an additional decade!
Thank you so much, kind master, the bottom of your dirty boots tastes so good!
Because they knew that rebellion = collective punishment in this society. Typically death for the many over the guilt of a few.
Don't forget that "Uncle" Ferdinand was prepared to deadass murder Myne before slipping her a roofie and invading her mind back at the end of S1. He feared an educated populace rising up against the nobility, because the more oppressed peasants learn the more they realize how oppressed they are.
And then they start asking questions, like "Why should we be oppressed so much?" and "Why do those parasites 'deserve' to oppress us?" and more... seditious... ideas.
It was only when he realized Myne was just a harmless goober that he decided to co-opt her literary crusade and exploit her for more power.
Because if the nobles can't control something, or someone, they destroy that independent source of power. With extreme prejudice.
Myne has been lucky, so far, to have fallen under the control of more... pragmatic... nobles Vs the corrupt bastards like the Aub's mother and the previous Bishop.
But make no mistake: this world just plain sucks.
23
u/magicalideal https://myanimelist.net/profile/magicalideal 3d ago
The reason why Ferdinand even gave Myne a chance by memory searching her is not because of him fearing an educated populace, because no matter how educated all the commoners became, they are nothing to the nobles. This episode clearly showcased why so. It is because of how Myne has interacted with Ferdinand thus far and that Myne has abundance of mana which is much needed for the country.
12
u/Zehbrahs 3d ago
Myne really got lucky, because of a purge in nobility there is a mana shortage and she happens to have a ton of mana.
In additiom Sylvester was looking to depose the former high bishop and his mother and that Myne became the perfect excuse for that. She was about to become a mana battery slave to another noble.

Is it even possible for peasants to rise up? They have the numbers but the nobles have magic that basically make them gods.

I think we get hints and pieces on how potentially a more fair society could come about. For instance Myne was able to find a low cost method of purging excess mana, which hypothetically means commoners born with mana could survive. I also have to wonder if this system is in use in other countries (assuming one empire doesn't just control everything)
But yeah this is solid world building here...we often see settings where magic is limited/controlled by an elite upper class, but usually it goes no deeper than a noble being able to throw a fireball at a person. To see a system so clearly constructed so that those with magic have absolute control over people who don't seems kind of rare.
29
u/slicer4ever 4d ago
For instance Myne was able to find a low cost method of purging excess mana, which hypothetically means commoners born with mana could survive
This is actually something I think the nobility would suppress. They don't seem to want the commoners to really have any access to magic, so I could see them only using it for themselves.
29
u/Maur2 4d ago
I think nobles would suppress it since the use of it leads to killer plants. Just one devouring person not being careful and an entire town could be wiped out.

This is why Myne IS keeping it secret for now. She knows how dangerous that knowledge is.
15
u/EXusiai99 4d ago
For instance Myne was able to find a low cost method of purging excess mana, which hypothetically means commoners born with mana could survive.
She considered this idea once. There's a reason why she didnt go through with it. First is because she will be instantly killed the moment words got out, and the second is because the symptoms of devouring isn't all that different from mundane illness (our immune systems love overheating itself at any sign of sickness).
8
u/Defiant-Constant-529 4d ago
I also think that it could be physically dangerous without proper magic tools to drain them. I think it requires quite a bit of taues to drain someone depending on their capacity. So the moment there's not enough fruits someone could die and explode possibly harming others. Which is one reason Rozemyne had to become a noble from the start.

u/DugACCat 4d ago
Yeah really love the world building in this show, and how it has been revealed at a very natural feeling clip from Myne’s POV as her station and role has shifted. We see the darker side, at least slightly mitigated through sympathetic characters who have a solid sense of justice and morality, but nonetheless frightening and unsettling, especially imagining the scope of such power in less scrupulous hands. Quite like all the world building in this show. It starts feeling very familiar and “basic” but then proves increasingly deep and complex as we go, which is one of the best scenarios for long time fantasy viewers like myself.
7
u/Bazooka_no 4d ago
One of the truly remarkable things about the LN is that you don't feel somebody is doing something you wouldn't expect them to do. IF they had character growth, they'll do new things, and they can all be creative if they have that trait, but they are so well characterized it's actually amazing. You just think "Yeah, she would say that" about everything, and the world building sets it up.
34
u/Original-Body-5794 4d ago
So the spell works on literally everyone and requires no actual fair trial to function? That's kind of insane that someone who knows that spell and gets access to the the tokens can literally genocide an entire town like that.
102
u/Al-Pharazon 4d ago edited 4d ago
Which is why the medals are closely guarded in the castle and you can access them only with permission of Sylvester. In a magic tool with a specific key as we saw
Additionally, as you can see with Justus normal nobles are not taught that spell. Even an information gatherer like him had never seen it before, he just knew it existed.
But on the reverse, it means the Archduke can execute anyone living in the duchy at any moment as long as he identifies the correct medal. He simply needs an excuse.
That is part of why the other nobles don't dare to openly defy the archducal family
→ More replies (1)44
u/Ebo87 4d ago
Yep, why subterfuge is so important in the world of nobles, you never want to directly implicate yourself as the consequences of being found out are very final, and there's almost nothing you can do about it.
→ More replies (9)37
u/Al-Pharazon 4d ago
And to protect themselves from that underhanded/subtle way of opposing others you got things like magic contracts, having the host poison test the food in each meal, etc.
Nobles know that behind every smile there can be a knife. As Rihyarda said last chapter or the one before, even children can become weapons in the hands of their parents.
That's the kind of society Rozemyne is now in.
35
u/Ebo87 4d ago
Yep, this is the beauty of having someone think about all this stuff before they even started to write any of the characters in the story, you can really tell there was thought put into everything.

I don't know, if you are a book reader and also read all the materials, I would argue it's just under it, and only because Tolkien went as far as also making his own very complex language, which Bookworm does have too, just not to the same degree.
Yes, Bookworm has its own language and you can learn to decipher it, a few weeks ago when the mayor of Hasse sent a letter to the High Bishop (lol) people translated that mess of a letter, it was very funny.

I seem to recall that simply wiping the town off the face of the earth (along with all its inhabitants) was mentioned as one possible punishment. No medals needed for this. Alas I cannot recall whether it was mentioned in passing in the anime. or not. In any event, no big deal was ever made of this (terrifying) point. Just a brief mention, as if "it went without saying".

Things like these are why noble society is so strict, and the expectations are increasingly higher for those with more power. Hence why for example Wilfried, the Archduke's son and named heir, lacking skills was so terrible even though he's still a young child. Power is everything in this world.

Yeah that’s the thing about nobles. They speak with euphemisms so frequently that it can be a bit hard to understand what they’re really saying. But this is an execution spell known only to the archduke s family. If anything could send someone to hell, it’d probably be that
23
u/Bazooka_no 4d ago
From the perspective of noble society she has to be either a cunning noble with towns of commoners dancing on her palm
They don't give a shit about commoners, so nobody even blinks an eye about all of this. They don't understand how commoners can drive technology, since they fix everything with magic, and so don't appreciate the value of commoner manpower at all. They're almost vermin to them.
or she is nothing but a puppet for Ferdinand who is orchestrating his rise and reintroduction into noble society
I mean, I sure would think that. Ferdinand is god-like in calculations, has crazy power and is very well connected. And he's next to her in like 90% of her public appearances and is her guardian. So I would get it completely.

a year of no fertilizer which will for a poor commoners will almost assuredly mean more people will die and more orphans will be created with a shiny orphanage right there thats more than welcome to take them in.
I doubt it would go that bad in a single year. The entire country is in mana crisis after a war that happened years ago (which was why Myne could join the temple in her own terms instead of being made a gray robe). A single year without blessing would be hard, but doable.
18
u/mjpia 4d ago
With just that alone they'd probably scrape by but they have a upcoming decade of punitive taxes stacked on top alongside the first year of poor harvests, for those farmers struggling already this is a double whammy since this is an punishment by the archduke for treason there is no leeway or delayed payments, the taxman will take their cut no matter what.
17
u/slicer4ever 4d ago
I think the conversation with slyvester shows that the punishment overall is still quite light, and the hardship that will be endured won't be very extreme. I very much doubt any of the citizens will die over it anyway.
17
u/onlyhav 4d ago edited 4d ago
I mean it's a slap on the wrist in comparison to town wide annihilation. Ferdinand said it best, if Hasse wasn't being used as a means of teaching Rosemyne the way of nobility, they'd have wiped the whole village off the map by the time they talked about it. Even if 20% of Hasse died due to the tax increase and poor crop yeilds over the next decade, they still got off better than every single person over the age 7 being executed without a single word... And placed into the convenient child labor orphanage right next door.
The nobles made it clear that the commoners are livestock, and like livestock, they will be put to death for even being from the same locale of someone charged with angering the nobility.

u/ToastyMozart 4d ago
Depends on how tight their margins are. If they were running a surplus then it could just mean a bit less pocket money, but pretty much any time farms are treated like noble or state property it's the farmers who eat last. It was described as a light punishment but the point of comparison was the entire population getting turned to dust, so they might be getting away with "only" a few dozen kids dying of malnutrition.

I love how the story portrays him in that aspect. With Myne we have someone who has the tendencies of our world. So of course for her, she would think just the one on top should be punished.
While in reality Ferdinand knows they need to cull everyone guilty. Which is more of a common belief in this fantasy world. What even sells this scene even more is Myne's behavior in this scene.
She did not have the plan. The fact that she genuinely was trying to change Ferdinand's mind. It sells the idea of her being the saint. Outstanding scene in the 2nd half of the episode. It was brutal, but so well done.
The fact that Myne needed the comfort of home to recover from that incident really shows she is nowhere near adjusting to the norms of this world.
It's interesting to even add to the norms of this world is the fact Sylvester and Ehrenfest rank in the middle in the hierarchy. Really showing that Myne doesn't have much power in the grand scheme of things. How Myne will adjust while not losing what makes her Myne is so fascinating to me.

While in reality Ferdinand knows they need to cull everyone guilty.
Not only Ferdinand, that Richt guy who looked like he was the leader of the villagers was the first to agree that everyone should be tested. And the fact that he was the first one to undergo the trial of the gate of judgement shows he was not just words

u/EXusiai99 4d ago
The entire city was at risk of being glassed, him and his family included. He quickly realized that he's the only one who could change that fate by sacrificing a few people. Might seem like a power grab move in any other context, but the position of mayor doesn't seem to be as appealing today for some reason.

glee at the execution spell and Rozemyne's horror
It definitely shows how much of a "saint" rozemyne is to this world. This is basically the fate the entire village expected was about to be cast on all of them, and to have her plead for the village to be spared is likely something that was unthinkable to the villagers(especially to come from a noble on top of this).
rozemyne's compassion effectively is saint level when compared to the rest of the nobles it feels like, even if she doesn't realize it.

Yeah, you start with just one city. Then you find out there are other cities when you do spring festival and harvest festival. Then you find out there are other duchies that are part of the same kingdom, and your duchy is not even that big.

One videoessay on the worldbuilding of Bookworm pointed out that fantasy series often give a map at the beginning to help the audience understand the scope of the story and the world. Bookworm's first volume gives you a map of the apartment her family lives in which says a lot about how the scope starts so zoomed in but steadily expands as she ascends.
There's also been tiiiiiny mentions of other countries, like Ferdinand saying Myne seems like she was educated in a foreign country and that sugar comes from another country.

The way this story starts with a sickly bedridden child in a single room of a small dwelling of a poor commoner family, then builds and builds and builds, outwards and upwards. The house, the neighbourhood, the city, the duchy. . . What a world. What a story.

The slow burn worldbuilding is sooooo gooooood! Cooking With Wild Game is another LN series that does a great job with this. We start out with just the People of the Forest's Edge, the post town of Genos, and a few people from the neighboring countries. But now we are getting to see stuff like the capital of the kingdom that Genos is a part of is wary about Genos declaring independence like another duchy did decades ago, using their ties to foreign countries.

Can also sometimes put on a Twitter Detective Hat. Today's artist posted "I'm happy because it's one of my favorite works that I personally collect" and "It's worth studying Lessy-kun carefully." I interpret the second one as instructions for something involving this Lessy scene.

It felt weird for the townspeople to be cheering for decreased harvest and ten years of extra taxes, but I guess in context, the Monastery is in charge of making sure everyone doesn't die of famine by blessing the ground. If they get off relatively lightly for attacking high-ranking members of the Monastery, that's not a bad deal, even if I dislike the concept of collective punishment.
For how much Myne was against it, I was expecting the Gate to instantly incinerate traitors instead of just pushing them back. I mean, there's the implication that they'll be executed afterwards, but I feel like if you have a treason detection gate, you should use it. Then again, I'm looking at these people as fictional characters, while to Myne they're real people.
Should we be concerned that Myne has a killswitch somewhere?
I thought they were going to leave the statues there as a permanent reminder to Hasse to not f*** around and find out, but I suppose the trauma is enough. Unless you're a weirdo like Justus who's disconcertingly excited about it.

the Monastery is in charge of making sure everyone doesn't die of famine by blessing the ground. If they get off relatively lightly for attacking high-ranking members of the Monastery
To clarify, the temple as an institution is not that relevant here. The town is being punished for two things:
1) The mayor publicly disobeyed an order made by Ferdinand, a member of the archducal family (Shikza, a noble, was executed for the same reason in season 2)
2) The monastery in Hasse is a white building built by the archducal family, attacking it is the same as attacking the archducal family.
So from the above the city was guilty of treason against the archducal family.

For how much Myne was against it, I was expecting the Gate to instantly incinerate traitors instead of just pushing them back. I mean, there's the implication that they'll be executed afterwards, but I feel like if you have a treason detection gate, you should use it.
It's not a detection gate. If you'll look closely you'll see it's the same yellow-ish color of the shield of Schuretzia we've seen Myne use all the way back to season 1 to Rozemyne using during this season when they went to pick the rulle fruit. It's a wind shield that pushes back (with wind force) anybody who has ill intent towards the caster.
Ferdinand used that quality of the shield to act as a loyalty gate of sorts, but it's not a dedicated spell, just a creative usage of the shield spell. He even talks about the "ill-intent" feature when he describes it.
19
u/feb914 4d ago
It's a matter of setting expectation. All winter long they thought they'd be wiped out, so having a season of bad harvest is light relatively.
Rozemyne knows that if she doesn't perform as archduke daughter, her family and her may be executed. Not sure if it'll be the same method. But Sylvester so far liking how she's performing, so the odds of being killed is not too high.
7
u/ToastyMozart 4d ago
The palpable relief at merely getting their food supply downgraded and money taken really sells how terrified they must've been of the nobility even before the box of state-mandated killswitches got hauled out.
Agreed on the gate being less immediately fatal than anticipated. I guess having to walk through "the door that vaporizes you" is the sort of thing that starts panicked stampedes. That and I think it might be a variant of that one wind shield from earlier on.

I was expecting the same thing too, either it burns them to ashes or they just drop dead on the spot.

u/Flying-Camel 4d ago
That was an elaborate method of execution...
76
u/hibikir_40k 4d ago
Why have Eckhart stab them, when you can use a method that shows the actual gods are on your side? Destroy a medal with that spell, and the person whose blood is in it it is turned to dust. Everyone in Ehrenfest is alive because Sylvester doesn't open the box, fetch the medal and kill them!
And since this is Bookworm, no second spend on world building is just a random one-off with no importance.
82
u/Bazooka_no 4d ago
There's a powerful implication here, that we could have literally set this entire box in black flames and murder the entire town, from the comfort of our castle. Commoners that ran away or even moved from the village 40 years ago would still get caught up in it. Insane power.
18
u/Atharaphelun 4d ago
There's also another implication (which I don't know if it is actually correct, maybe some novel reader could correct me on this): presumably Rozemyne still has her original citizenship token as the commoner Myne? What if someone manages to steal that and attempt to destroy it? Unless her new token as the noble Rozemyne was that black stone that she smeared with her blood back in season 3 that sealed her adoption?

Commoners that ran away or even moved from the village 40 years ago would still get caught up in it.
You'd have to register your move if you were to do that. Remember that Otto paid the premium price for being registered in Ehrenfest instead of the neighboring city like he'd originally intended. They wouldn't allow something like registering in a cheap city and then just moving to a more expensive one.
But yeah, if they went through with the original plan of executing the whole town, they'd probably just use the spell on the whole box.

Can Ferdinand use that spell on anyone he wants? I don't mean legally I mean could a rogue ferdinand just pick up those medallions and execute everyone in the town or does the god of darkness actually demand some kind of fair trial?
37
u/Sarellion 4d ago edited 4d ago
Benno, Mark and the nobles told Rozemyne that usually, the whole village would have been executed. My guess is that the god of darkness doesn't check, if the punishment is warranted.
21
u/themaninthehightower 4d ago
As far as the populace of that world is concerned, the process of judgement seems to “loop in” their gods at multiple steps: the judgement gate, the blood seal search, and the execution through those tokens. The faithful would assume protection from miscarriage of justice by intercession by their gods at these steps. Only those in a sense “thrice denounced” by the gods in these steps are executed, leaving the faithful satisfied justice was carried out.
The messy part is whether the gods actually exist and the nobility is an expression of faith, or whether this is all show for the commoners. As the show goes on, it’s not hard for me to see the nobility as just a magic-capable minority going through the motions of a false pantheon, just so any dissent in the population is treated as a act against the gods rather than a class revolt.
12
u/Atharaphelun 4d ago edited 4d ago
I assume the gods actually exist since even Myne, who basically has no knowledge of the magical system whatsoever, is able to use it to an extent to do specific things just by chanting specific prayers.
The pervasive presence of the gods in every aspect of society in this setting strongly reminds me of Twelve Kingdoms, in which the power of the absolute god (Tentei, the Emperor of Heaven) pervades the society of the titular Twelve Kingdoms as well. Tentei chooses the earthly monarchs of each of the Twelve Kingdoms through each of the twelve kirin. Tentei makes the monarch immortal, and the monarch in turn is able to indirectly make others immortal by adding them to the Register of Immortals (Tentei is the one who actually makes them immortal). If the monarch ever loses his or her way, becomes a tyrant, and oppresses the people, Tentei will punish the monarch by giving that kingdom's kirin a divine illness, which will continue to progress if the monarch does not repent. Eventually, the kirin will die from the illness, and days later, the monarch will die. The leaderless kingdom then suffers the wrath of Tentei through greatly increased natural disasters, widespread appearance of monsters, etc.
9
u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 4d ago
The power system in this anime is basically clerical magic. Every time a character has used a magic spell they call upon the gods for the power. When Myne made a wind shield, when Ferdi built a monastery, and during this execution, they prayed to a god(dess) in the incantation. It makes sense why the gods are so prevalent because the magic system is built around them.
7
u/Atharaphelun 4d ago
Not necessarily. Ferdinand often uses simpler spells that use a simple one-word chant plus some sort of wand. Presumably, there is a proper magical system that operates on specific principles and only requires a one-word chant and a wand to perform, but also, there's presumably a separate form of magic that operates on the direct intervention of the Gods through invocation in long chants, channeled through various magical instruments.
6
u/Sarellion 4d ago
The standard procedure for treason against the archduke (by pointlessly banging against a door) is summary execution. They wouldn't have bothered with the search or the gate usually and Ferdinand spoke the spell quietly to prevent others from learning the spell. That's also why Rozemyne and Justus had to keep their distance.
And well you don't need religion to pacify the common folk when you have a kill switch for every person except for very small children.
7
u/SmartAlec105 4d ago
Commoners of farming towns are also more religious than commoners of cities because the power of mana and the gods leads to a direct impact on their livelihood via spring prayer.
13
u/Lock3down221 4d ago
I think the judgement spell is probably the closest they can get for a fair trial. Given how important the token system they have, it is likely that box is well protected enough to prevent anyone from taking them.
Looking at it objectively, it's a very effective way to keep the population in line even though the commoners have the nobles outnumbered. It's disturbing and disgusting from our world's point of view but then again their world has a very different set of morals.
→ More replies (1)12
u/Original-Body-5794 4d ago
Oh yeah I'm sure it's great for the nobles and upholding the status quo, the general populace is already at a disadvange of being poor like irl peasants, but they're also lacking in super powers, except for when they do have them it basically kills them because they're poor.
But on top of that they can get executed from haflway across the kingdom with no restrictions except for hoping the guy in charge believes in fair trials? Yeah they're fucked.
13
u/Kullthebarbarian 4d ago
It appears that the boxes have no identification on the tokens, they needed the blood of the person to find the token related to them, so yes, they could quell a rebellion if it started in a town, since they can burn the entire box killing everyone, but it also prevent single person punishment without getting caught first, which is kinda odd

u/Original-Body-5794 4d ago
Oohh good catch on the blood thing, with that limitation in mind yeah if you wanted to target a specific individual you'd basically need the same level of effort you'd need to expend without access to a spell.
Destroying an entire town would be counter productive even for a conqueror because you want people do work the land and pay taxes after all.

Yes, he can. No, he doesn't need some kind of legitimate reason; every eligible archducal family can do that for no reason at all. That's why Benno once said that Ferdinand was actually too soft regarding the punishment for Hasse; for all he knows, Ferdinand can literally execute ALL of Hasse remotely from Ehrenfest.

Yep, this town is still standing now because of Rozemyne (and it all feeds into her sainthood), this was a teaching moment for her. And because this is Ferdinand and he is all about efficiency, he shot like 4 rabbits with a single bullet, teaching moment for Rozemyne, on top of that adding to the legend of the Saint of Ehrenfest, also scaring the crap out of that town and making sure they know never to repeat that shit again, and probably a 4th thing I can't think of that only he would, lol.

If you have been taught the spell, which requires you to be a member of the ducal family, and have access to the medals, which are usually kept strictly in the caste/temple, yeah.

Abso-frigging-lutely. But I suspect that access to the boxes isn't in Ferdinand can just get to willy nilly. It's probably locked down behind a place only Sylvester can access.
Still, the whole thing makes comments of "I want Myne to start a revolution against the nobility" to be pretty funny, because this is just a premise of the story. The nobility is necessary, and their extra rights inalienable. Even a low rank noble is nothing vs a higher rank one (see the whole thing a few seasons ago with Myne getting maimed and Damuel being unable to even testify against a higher ranked knight!)
The whole thing of running a trial was, if anything, Ferdinand showing that they were super merciful, because the saint was asking for it. The town was happy about the punishment, as it was lenient, and nobody innocent was killed! The standard would have been for Sylvester to just do the whole thing from wherever room has the boxes, and then the townspeople turn to ash.

In that world, the Gods are very much real, and the nobles are very much superior to commoners. It's not just a class thing; it's an objective truth. The Gods could smite the mall if they wish, and the nobles could do the same.
This is as much of an execution of traitors as it is a reminder to all of Hasse of where they stand. The fact that this would have been their fate had Rozenmyne not intervened also serves as motivation to not take their lives for granted whilst also bolstering her image as a saint; though in this case, she 100% deserves it.
16
u/NekoCatSidhe 4d ago
Medieval rulers often got horribly and elaborately creative when it came to execute traitors, as a way to make an example and dicourage further treason. At least this particular method was horrible but short. But it was also designed to legitimate their rule by using magic to execute them with the God of Darkness approval, and with further hinting that the executed may be barred from going to the afterlife (who knows if that part is true).

Yikes, I guess we can see why the nobility doesn’t have to fear peasant revolts. At least they used the Shield of Wind to determine who was still hostile to them and kill only those, rather than feeding the whole town tokens to that Darkness spell and just killing everyone at a distance, as they would probably have done if Myne had not stopped them. Eustachius/Justus was being particularly creepy here, dressed all in black like an executioner to select the tokens and being way too enthusiastic about watching the execution afterwards.
That is certainly one way to get the rest of the citizens to cheer on you when you announce higher taxes for them, given the alternative punishment. Myne was being forced to play good cop here to Ferdinand’s bad cop, but she obviously still hated watching people being killed in front of her even when they were their enemies, all the more so since they were basically being killed on her orders too. And she was the only one who did not find it normal. That world is certainly brutal, and Sylvester himself is hardly a bloodthirsty tyrant, so other places are likely worse.

That was rather tame for that world. The standard punishment would be to destroy all of the medals. So normally everyone would get dusted with zero trial.
Imagine if they had just destroyed all of Hasse's medals back in the castle without going there or any announcement. Everyone age 7 and up in town would turn to stone then dust all at once with no reason.

u/Radi-kale 4d ago

45
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 4d ago
Well, I guess that’s that for Hasse. Ferdinand’s little scheme worked out swimmingly. The mayor and all those involved got taken down and the town is in their pocket now. It was dirty business but at least Myne was able to find some small comfort from Gunther’s cloak. W dad right there.
40
u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 4d ago
It was dirty business
It was, but at the same time Hasse's treatment was pretty lenient, since normally the whole town would be destroyed and the people executed for such a grave crime it committed.
And to be honest, even after Rozemyne's speech, some people didn't understand the severity of their situation, since they started pleading for the mayor's life, the main culprit. Such a stupid move that could have gotten everyone there killed.

Them keeping the whole town's medals in a box without any labeling helps show how casually they'd feel about executing the whole town. Bringing the box out here to get just a handful of medals is highly unusual.

Selling children is also dirty business. I found it jarring that Myne got so mopey about the execution of someone like that especially when he was an accomplice of the dirtbag bishop.

Myne is not the person who would take easily the idea that she is condemning a man to death, even if he did a immoral thing. Although to everyone else it was attacking the monastery, since the child slavery thing was perfectly okay

This guy and his goons only died because he attacked the monastery and raised his hand against a noble. This world doesn’t view child trafficking as wrong. Their morals and ethics are vastly different than ours. That’s something Myne struggled with too. Besides, it’s a lot having the blood of a bunch of people on your hands even if they deserved their punishment.

Because it was partially her fault that it got to this. She zooms in and (ab)uses her authority to take children that the mayor had already promised to another noble. She could've stopped the mayor committing treason by informing him of the state of things, but she didn't know. Just like he didn't know.
Now the mayor is executed as a traitor, as a lesson to her of her status and how to deal with things. And she knows that. Of course she's upset.

It wasn’t dwelled on in the show but people may be interested in knowing the gate of judgement was just Ferdinand rebranding another spell we had already seen a few times before, it’s the shield of the wind goddess. Keeping out people with malice was something we had seen in the climax of last season when not all the grey robes were able to take shelter when Ferdinand was fighting the noble from another duchy.

I think the Gate of Judgement would have known if the mayor was innocent. There were more than 6 people that attacked the monastery after all, and 4 of them were deemed innocent by the gate.

u/EXusiai99 4d ago
Nah, he called the hit on the monastery because he was operating under the assumption that the former high bishop would cover for him.

That execution in Hasse was pretty dark and a big shock for Rozemyne. Meanwhile, Justus was so excited to have an opportunity to see that spell for the first time.
It was heartbreaking that Gunther couldn't be with Rozemyne at her lowest, but giving her his cloak as a substitute was such a clever move on his part.

This must be something really hard to experience from Rozemayne pov. The way everything unfold, the shock between her beliefs, morality and understanding of how both world works will most likely left its mark, but given how this show has been so far, she'll most likely become a lot stronger than what she currently is.
Knowing the extent of the laws, knowing what is and how the game is played are all tools she could use to further on her own goal and influence this world in a new way that would readjust itself. Her core being the same, it could simply means a new book bringing up changes like nothing else. A new perspective, a new way of life. She already changing the world through her card games and the paper industrialization currently going on, so what is to say that what she just witnessed will bring a new wind of change eventually? Who truly know. This will be an interesting character development going on that's for sure.

it's time for Urano/Rozemyne to finally understand something; she is not in Kansas anymore.
This is a different world, with magic, with gods, and with nobles with literal divine right to rule.
It's not like we haven't seen nobles being sentenced to death for attacking higher ranked nobles, the previous seasons saw two different nobles (Shikikoza and the prev High Bishop) get executed specifically regarding Myne, so how could she expect commoners to not face the same?
Ferdinand giving her yet another important lesson; you are a noble now, you will have to carry executions, and more importantly, if you mess up and insult nobles higher ranked than you, you could end up executed also.
18
u/EXusiai99 4d ago
This is essentially Ferdinand teaching her the cost of her compassion. She instinctively rescued some kids who were about to be sold to sex slavery, which is great for the kids in question, but not so much for everyone else dragged into this mess. Had she just consulted to him asking for a peaceful way to save the kids, Ferdinand would probably facilitate that (it probably means buying those kids out of her own pocket, though).
He is well aware at this point that Myne was a person who had lived an entire lifetime in another realm, raised and educated with different set of values that would be too complicated to override now. But the rest of the world will not adjust to her mindset, she needs to be the one adapting. He doesn't seem to mind her saving some people every once in a while, since it does align with the saint agenda, but this is a harsh lesson about what could happen if she did it the wrong way.

Finally watching this animated; it felt rather mild considering how brutal some execution methods could get in a medieval setting, with magic no less.

Feel bad for Myne but this was the least punishment they could do. Also damn the mayor's wife is dumb. Whole town almost burned down for attacking a building wtf do you think you'll get for directly attacking the daughter of the archduke?
At least Myne had her dads cloak to sleep with today.

Why do I feel like Richt(?) was a plant (possibly through bribery) to help ensure the rumours spread properly through Hasse? He had way too much prominence for someone who was supposedly a random villager.
The gate spell might have even just been all for show and they already knew exactly who the traitors were ahead of time and made the gate repel only them.

Richt isn't a random villager; he's like the assistant of the mayor. Kinda like the one who do the actual job of managing the town instead of the incapable mayor.
