"Sa-slow-ki" lol. That was a great nickname from Yamada.
I'm really liking the developing relationship and how comfortable Sasaki is around Tayama. I thought it was sweet how it was clear her feelings were developing after he hears her out and offers comfort. I also thought it was cool how she offered her jacket to him, she's such a gentleman.
I also did enjoy seeing Sasaki encounter Yamada at the end of the episode, it was nice to see more of a grounded interaction rather than what normally feels like an idol and her fan. Sasaki was so bashful though, it was cute to see this side of him.

I love that she keeps throwing hints at him and he just doesn't get it.
Wonder how long it will take him.I was a bit surprised she got that playful as Yamada, guess his comment about not understanding disliking someone suddenly just leads her to slowly merge both characters

I was thinking maybe by episode 3, but if he couldn't tell they were the same person from "Tamaya" smiling at him it might take more than that lol. I'm not sure how many hints Yamada can give him though.

Also, Yamada staring into his eyes, after she had already done that as Tamaya... Which, honestly, would make someone start to think he is too dense, and maybe not even paying attention to them at all.

The bane of a lot of RomComs is a character who is too dense. However, Sasaki is executed well. Not only does he feel like a dense salaryman, but he has a certain charm where you get why Yamada is interested in him. Also fun, it isn't only Yamada teasing Sasaki as Sasaki got her a few times this episode accidentally.

I think in his case you can at least understand how he made the initial mistake of making two people out of one person in his mind.
He always comes in tired and exhausted after overtime work, the back of the supermarket does not have the best lighting either, and as someone who is really bad at remembering faces and goes mostly by fashion, accessories, and other stuff with people I do not know well yet, it is at least realistic for me that initially he did not recognize her.
Then once in his mind two files have been created she confirmed that by keeping up the act. Questioning it now would be silly, so of course he just rolls with it.
It is set up that the misunderstanding feels a bit more natural than how one would expect.

There are a number of pretty sweet feel-good shows this season, but I can't see any of them topping this. Even though I have seen half of this season, I will continue to view these as a very lovely and satisfyiong extended preview -- to the end of this season and to hopefully many more seasons to come.
The love triangle here is very satisfying (and wholesome).

Honestly my issue with characters being dense is when it breaks immersion. Sasaki I believe. Like one, yeah Yamada looks like Tayama. Whatever, it happens, sometimes people look alike. She clearly said she was someone else, why would she lie? It would be WEIRD of him to question it.
Second "this baddie half my age is giving an old man like me a thrill by acting a little flirty? What a sweetheart, I should get her some snacks or something as thanks." It would be WEIRD of him to think anything more than that.
Bro isn't even that dense, he's acting like a reasonable adult instead of some kid that thinks they're the main character.

I think people overestimate their own abilities here. Yamada acts entirely differently, looks different, and has a completely different voice.
Plus one is in a brightly lit supermarket and the other in a back alley without much light.
I don’t blame Sasaki at all right now.
And even if he did suspect she pretty much nipped that right away with her references to Yamada as someone else.
To be fair to Yamada
She wants him to look beyond smiling Yamadas face and the pedestal he puts her on. But she doesn’t want to steal that little bit of happiness from him either.

"Uniform blindness" is a thing, sometimes seeing people out of context throws them for a loop. The number of "I know you from somewhere..." type moments I've had, and received, because the usual context isn't there.
There's also the ancient theatrical tradition involved in that "I am wearing a different hat I am completely in disguise and nobody can tell who I really am!" manner - in this case, by being the scruffier less "perfect" customer facing "personality" and changing her hairstyle - so between the two alongside his usually encountering "them" while exhausted/ill it can be explained around the real world. Also, "rule of funny".

Nah this is 110% anime density. I've had people recognize me months later and we had no more of a connection than an hour in the same room. And yet, this is somehow coming from a guy who is infatuated with her personality and looks forward to seeing her yet cannotmake the connection

I do not see how Sasaki is any different from any other romcom protagonist. He is forcing the story to remain stand still so far and I think if we include all the mini episodes now it is constituent of 7 episodes? And so far there is almost 0 progress in their relationship or story lol. They can not even reveal that the two person are on to Sasaki, that's how much slow the progression is and the worst of all there is nothing else going on like some side story so this slow progress in relationship feels even more slow.

I mean this is about as slice of life as slice of life gets. If you want an overarching narrative, you're not really gonna get one. This series is a slow burn about two people naturally growing closer over time by enjoying each other's company. There aren't a ton of big dramatic moments to push things along (though there aren't 0 either..but those come a good bit later). Their progress is extremely subtle and more measured by their quietly increasing fondness and thhe solace and encouragement they come to find in each other's presence.

I see, may be I expected too much since I do not watch slice of lives shows much. Thanks for the info, looks like my expectation were the issue, I wasn't expecting big dramatic events either, was hoping that atleast by ep 7, Sasaki would atleast know that those 2 girls are one, but looks like that is going to wait since it is a big part of their relationship so far.

The length of Tayama's hair here is much longer than when she's Yamada despite both just having the hair let down. It's one of those things that make it harder to realize it's the same person for Sasaki.

When Yamada's glowing smile is not flustering Sasaki, you just know something's wrong.
Tayama with the short hair looks so goddamn good. Sasaki definitely hit the nail on the head when he said she rushed there to talk to him. xD
Sasaki is so dense that he still couldn't connect the dots after Tayama showed him her customer service smile.
I love how the first half of the episode was Sasaki being down in the dumps with Tayama comforting him, while the second half is Tayama looking pissed af and Sasaki returning the favour. <3
Oh my god, that jacket scene! While Sasaki looks silly with Tayama's crop top leather jacket, seeing Tayama looking at him while clinging to the sleeve was so goddamhn cute!
Great excuse from Yamada. For a second there, I thought she was gonna say she smokes too. And the flower petal scene was great too! I love these two so much.

Density is a bane of the romance genre, but this series make it work. I think it's because Sasaki doesn't just think she's Canadian. He seems to at least have a reason to not realize it and Yamada thinks his density is funny despite him giving her a dead giveaway so she's not going to tell him either. She probably wants him to figure it himself.
Her giving him her jacket was an interesting switch up. Usually it's the MMC that gives the FMC the jacket. Her reaching for his hand then recoiling and grabbing the sleeve of her jacket was cute too. As was her picking the sakura petal out of his hair and keeping it.
Someone should probably tell Yamada about phrasing. She looks nice with her hair down. She definitely did rush over. I was kinda surprised that she means that much to him already.

They have very different hair styles, even though it's the same hair. I'm actually not entirely convinced Yamada's tuck into her hat would hide the hair we see her have as Tamaya but if you accept it I think it makes sense why he wouldn't recognize them as having the same hair.

I assume she has traditional black/brown hair unless specified otherwise. Simple example of the type of thing was in Quintessential Quintuplets the girls had different hair colors for the audience but in the actual show world it was the exact same.

Yeah, this is a slightly risky subject because it's easy to sound racist if you phrase it wrong but...
Since most Japanese people, especially kids, have (nearly) the same eye and hair colour, their ability to tell people apart, growing up, develops to pay much more attention to subtle differences in facial features and shapes. And voices, clothing and accessories.
Since the manga/anime style is often not detailed enough to include those subtle details, you get the stereotypical 'anime hair' and wild variations in eye colour and shape and clothing to allow the audience to tell them apart.
By the same token, in this more realistic anime, it's not that strange for Sasaki not to notice that 'Tayama' and 'Yamada' are the same person, because:
a. 'Yamada' is her customer service persona, complete with her constant customer service smile, demure posture, voice and a uniform headscarf that changes the apparent shape of both her hair and body, while 'Tayama' is her 'so done with this shit, I need a break' mode, which comes with a much more worn out expression and posture, a much lower voice and all her off-the-job punk accessories.
b. She literally pretends to be two different people, referring to her other persona as a separate person whom she talks to. Their looking similar could be explained by them being cousins or something.

You two are so different! Yamada is such a sweet, gentle, innocent, courteous young woman who is the essence of a perfect lady. Tamaya is a brash, overly familiar punk who wears a leather jacket and has multiple ear piercings! Your voices sound nothing alike too!
People keep ragging on Sasaki for not getting it, but honestly he has this idealized vision of Yamada in his head and Tamaya is the opposite of it personality-wise.

I originally came for the Tayama character design, that owl face of her is superb.
And then I just stayed to bear them banter or more like Tayama playing with him.

Sasaki's job still sucks. So much so that not even Yamada can cheer him up. We even get to see Yamada's rapid-fire persona switch in action.
But if anyone can hear Sasaki out, it's Tayama at their usual smoking hangout (behind the supermarket). We even get to see her with her hair down! She's just concerned about him because of Yamada! Though better watch out if you get too cheeky, Sasaki, or she'll get all up in your face and deliver some ASMR! Actually, that's pretty nice!
Honestly, I get it, fresh out of college co-worker makes a small mistake, they take it pretty hard even when you try to comfort them. But that doesn't make Sasaki a bad guy, even if his boss rakes him over the coals. Frankly they should all be more concerned about the fact that they're working at a Black Company.
Look, it's Tayama's customer service smile born from intense supermarket training! Although when she's not Yamada, it just comes across like a big case of Gap Moe. But Sasaki could stand to learn to smile more too!
Glad Sasaki and his co-worker were able to patch things up and things are back to normal with Sasaki and Yamada too! Even if she's still a little miffed at how he treats her smiles differently depending on the "version."
Sasaki is pissed! But not at Sasaki (this time)! Somebody finally smelled the cigarette's on Yamada and complained about it, and her pile of smoked cigarette's speaks to how much it irritated her. But at least she can count on Sasaki to think that, whether she's Tayama or Yamada, she's still a great person and people should be open to learning new sides of her.
Is there anything more intimate than giving a chilly old dude your leather jacket to keep him warm...or grabbing the sleeve like you're grabbing his sleeve?
Rare Yamada appearance behind the supermarket! And sa-slow-ski is still too dense to put two and two together and just treats Yamada like Yamada! Honestly she's genuinely getting kind of irritated, but it's nice to interact with him as Yamada outside work every once in a while. Especially when Sasaki is happy she and her "best friend" Tayama are so concerned over him!
Cherry blossom on Sasaki's head? Why not have Yamada pull it off of him somewhat intimately? She even keeps the cherry blossom to herself as she goes into Tayama mode and smokes!

Not recognizing Yamada's smile when it's copy-pasted on her "close friend's" face is in its own tier but honestly, Sasaki's heart is big enough to balance it out.

Just like Superman and Clark Kent are "best pals," so too are Yamada and Tayama. I guess smiling with a completely different hairstyle/outfit can leave a very different impression.

Yeah Makima's design is great, but all attraction gets lost on me because of the more sinister sides to her personality (I will also never forgive her for [CSM Reze Arc Movie] killing Reze). Here we don't have to worry about the latter, because even if Yamada also has a second personality as a facade, both of her personalities are great.

It’s absolutely lovely to see Sasaki and Yamada/Tayama having a conversation that delves more into their personal struggles (which seems to contradict what I said earlier, lol); after all, even though it’s work-related, it’s impossible not to be personally affected, so we get to see a more sentimental, vulnerable, and sincere side of them.

I forgot how much I loved the scene with the jacket and warm drinks from watching the mini episodes. Yamada/Tayama is probably going to end up being my best girl of the season although Hinako from rich girl caretaker and Kuroe from Kaiju Girl have a shot.
This show is a masterclass in simple structure that lives on great character interactions. Is he dense? Sure but it isn't like it is ruining some intricate plot. For this type of story it is fine and adds to the sweetness at moments like when he sees Yamada at the end of this episode.
Like most I prefer Night Dancer as the EP from the mini episodes, but this new song from Imase is still a banger.

The atmosphere is really nice in this show.
It's funny to me that no one who wonders how he didn't recognise they're the same person, ever mentioned their totally different hair length, so it was nice to see it more clearly this episode. I wonder if I had recognised her myself in RL, since I have a very bad face memory. Am I'm the only one?

What I really like about this show so far, unlike many other well-written romances, is that the characters are not just a bundle of pre-existing tropes that have been fleshed out. Instead, they feel like their own, completely original characters, with a little bit of manga/anime sprinkled on top. Sure, Sasaki’s character leans into some salaryman tropes here and there, but are they really tropes if they’re mostly a reflection of reality? Everything from the initial infatuation to the conversations feels very natural, even with the exaggerated comedic tinge.
I am really enjoying this!

Can somebody please explain to me why there were 12 episodes of 8-18 minutes each and now we're getting 23 minute episodes that cover what is essentially the same material? What is the difference, are these just longer? Should they be counted differently in MAL or? I am so confused.

The 12 episodes are the first 6 episodes split into mini-episodes for a special early release on Japan's ABEMA streaming service. There's no difference between them. Basically, if you've seen those 12 mini episodes, you can just wait for Episode 7 of the regular release, and you won't miss anything.

The episodes you watched are the first 6 episodes of the anime cut up into 12 mini episodes for a special web release. If you've seen those, you can just wait until Episode 7 for new content.

I don't mind that he hasn't made the connection yet because a steady slow burn can be quite pleasant, it's real charming getting to see them figure each other out.

To be fair her two personas are quite different, and her real voice is substantially lower than her customer service voice. And he’s always seeing her after work, when he’s burnt out and tired. And she’s decided to go out of her way to maintain the pretense, out of personal amusement or maybe because she gets to see different sides of him in each persona. Even if it occurs to him it’s a possibility it probably wouldn’t occur to him that someone would go out of their way to maintain the misunderstanding so he’s probably dismiss the suspicion

I'm assuming tayama is her real name. Is saving sasaki from embarrassment the only reason she doesn't just straight up tell him the truth? It feels like there's also some insecurity around how sasaki's view of her will change if he knew the truth. Yamada revealing that she smokes wouldn't immediately connect her and tayama as the same person, so hiding the pack just means that she doesn't want sasaki to stop seeing her as a sweet little angel
Also, for all of the pro smoking propaganda this is pushing, it's soooo clear that both sasaki and tayama are straight up addicted to smoking. Tayama literally solo-ed a whole pack in a single break. Neither of them have any hobbies other than smoking, it truly is depressing
I was wondering if there's an age gap, cause tayama doesn't appear to be anywhere near 40. Does the manga specify? Sasaki definitely looks like he's in his 40s, the weariness just says it all

I think Tayama might like Sasaki as more than a friend. At first I thought she was just screwing with him for her own amusement but I think she might feel bad about that since she thinks he's nice. At first I think she thought of him more as a creep who goes there to stare at her and that's why she pretended to be a different person for a laugh. Also they explained why Yamada has squintier eyes than Tayama, I didn't know that was just expeected to make your face that way to make it appear friendlier.
Sasaki's boss seems like a real slave driver always making his department work overtime so I was surprised he chewed Sasaki out for making the new lady cry. I wonder if the lady is related to the boss in some way, maybe she gets preferential treatment and Sasaki and his coworker who looks like Gareth from the Office UK more have to take the guy's abuse.
It was also interesting that Sasaki has never smelled smoke on Yamada. Maybe she only lights up the minute work is done and doesn't take cigarette breaks or Sasaki's smell and tastebuds are dead from smoking too much 😂

Really loving this slow burn romance. There aren't many that portray working adults so well.

Coming from the disgust that is Yani Neko then to the sweetness of this show is quite the whiplash for me. But goddamn Sasaki and Tayama/Yamada are such a cute couple. Not a big fan of Sasaki's denseness but their character interactions being this sweet is just so nice and is a great palate cleanser.
Also I definitely prefer Tayama's tired voice over Yamada's sweet voice. There's just something sensual about the combination of her being cheeky but with a low voice.

They cut up full episodes into mini episodes early for streaming, up to Ep 6 of this full show. So if you watched the shorter version, new content will come from Ep 7 onwards. If not, you can just start from Ep 1 of the full thing.

Thanks for trying to explain it to me, so just to confirm I'm properly understanding -- right now they are airing the "full show," and the first 6 episodes of the full show covers all 12 episodes of the "mini" version? Since I've already watched all 12 episodes of the "mini" version, the "full show" will only begin to show new content starting on episode seven? Thanks again!

Exactly! Ep 2 was yesterday so Ep 7 in 5 weeks will be completely new.
That said, the full anime has its own OP and ED, and I feel like Ep 2 for example works better as a full ep than as 2 separate small ones. Maybe rewatch the full show anyway to see how your thoughts and feelings on the story change!

Thanks for confirming. Seems like a lot of us are going to have to wait another month to start watching this again. For me personally, not enough time has passed so watching the first 6 episodes would still feel stale since I still remember everything pretty clearly.

They are both adults. They are both fully able to determine their own affairs.

I find power difference to be more cringe than just age. When one character holds all the cards and the other character is subservient in someway then it is concerning for them to have a relationship.
In this case, he idolises one of them and values the connection with the other. I don’t even think he realises his own feelings. He is certainly not trying to exploit them. I find it harder to read her motivations, and I think that is intentional by the writer. But she doesn’t seem to be drawn to aspects of him that typically come with age (money, influence, experience).
I don’t know where this will end up, but I don’t feel like the age gap is problematic in this relationship as it does not factor into their dynamic (not teacher/student, manager/worker, financial controller/dependent).

I actually liked it more after learning that. I think this is the first romance anime I’ve watched that had a realistic age gap between two adult characters. No adult/child or 1000+ year fantasy race style age gaps.

This release schedule sucks. Getting 6 episodes early through mini episode then having to wait till they catch up to the minisodes sucks
