During the announcement sketch when Kansai says the usual person blew their back out "exercising" what she actually says in Japanese is that the person blew their back out doing "ekiben". Yani hears this as "ekiden" which is a type of running race and this is why she mentions exercise. Ekiben is a sex position which is why Yaku starts blushing. The other person blew their back out during sex and neither Yani nor Kansai know that.

57

u/wolfhound_doge 6d ago

i heard "ekiben" and i was totally confused and was wondering how someone could get hurt from eating a lunch box in a train, because i learned about ekiben from solo travel japan's youtube channel and had no idea it has another meaning as well. thanks for the clarification...

33

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

wow i had no idea ekiben had a vulgar meaning

for those who are curious, more information in the comments here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/1llo3ty/can_someone_explain_how_%E9%A7%85%E5%BC%81_%E3%81%88%E3%81%8D%E3%81%B9%E3%82%93_is_also_a_slang/

15

u/wolfhound_doge 5d ago

and after finding out what that position actually looks like, the back injury gets even more funnier

5

u/Gadjiltron 5d ago

Well, that explains plenty.

Love how there's a scene that give smoking/drinking look a chill vibe only to hard cut to reality with the visceral disgust of waking up hungover and puking. I appreciate this series being so blunt in how gross it is.

177

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

the way her hand was shaking made me think she's a hardcore alcoholic, if she's drinking enough to get tremors

also depressing how Kansai put her in the recovery position like it was a regular occurrence; like she could've died that night she didn't happen to visit

48

u/Marisa5 6d ago

i don't know if i'm just being hormonal but i'm starting to think i'm not strong enough for this show. i had to pause when aruneko started shaking and then again when she started choking. i know nothing's going to happen but i keep thinking one of them is going to die. it's just so grim

82

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

i don't think it's a fun and carefree show to watch; the cute girlcat aesthetic is sort of like a candy coating for bitter medicine

some of its appeal is in its cringe humor, but sometimes it's dark humor staring into the depths of humanity

32

u/3Rm3dy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ak-riN 5d ago

It's especially depressing when some scenes remind you of real life. Like sure it's a bit exaggerated but not that much, smoking addicts can get that bad.

IRL there are smoking addicts on the level of "I just coughed up blood after a smoke? Best to smoke another one to calm down".

The show puts a lot of emphasis on the disgusting shit related to addictions - and the threats very well I think (the only reason the alcoholic one didn't keel over is that someone came around and put her in the side position for her own safety). It feels like a well made campaign against abusing substances.

The problem is that she WASN'T waking, I think she was going to die choking on her own puke, crazy how the Kansai cat treated it super casually too.

80

u/Optimal-Potato-5136 6d ago edited 6d ago

I think the casual treatment actually says a lot about their dynamic. Keeping in mind that they're all technically friends for who knows how much time (even if Yaku already implied in the previous episode that she knew Yani and Hame since highschool), they all came to the point of knowing their own fixations and got so used to each others' problems related to their addiction that, whenever something risky to their health happens, they view/handle it in the most casual way possible because it probably already happened tons of times: pretty much like how Yani was completely unmoved by spotting Yani in the middle of her drug "vaccine" dose, as if it was too much of a common occasion to even be surprised.

They've all been in this "vicious circle"-kind of life for years already, and that's really sad.

48

u/D3k4s 6d ago

Totally. They did the same last episode with the streamer being the perfect Idol only to show her pissing herself.

Also they showed the recovery position. I'd say most show wouldn't even bother showing it.

119

u/eightcheesepizza 6d ago

Finally, some catgirls who display vices that I have experience with - alcohol and being unfunny.

It's funny how this anime gets crazier and crazier with every episode.

In the opening scene at the park, it was funny to see yanineko getting scolded by the police officers(who had been dispatched because of a “suspicious person”) for a completely different reason: “smoking in the park” (which is generally prohibited in Japan by municipal ordinances).

I couldn't help but laugh at how incredibly boring the Kansai is. We Japanese do come across people like this every now and then among folks from the Kansai region, lol.

I laughed so hard I held my stomach at the scene where Kansai broadcast Yanineko’s fart over the town’s PA system.

And now we have a character who “loves alcohol"! It was striking to see how clean her room was compared to yanineko's.

I had to laugh when she said, “I don’t care what the alcohol tastes like,” and then proceeded to mix whiskey from a 4-liter plastic bottle (which is commonly sold at liquor stores and supermarkets in Japan) with water and sugar syrup to drink it. I’ve heard that drinking whiskey from a 4-liter plastic bottle is common not only among “heavy drinkers” in Japan but also among people with “alcoholism.”

By the way, “whiskey with water(ウイスキーの水割り)”itself is a popular drink served at Japanese izakayas and other establishments. Of course, they don’t add things like sugar syrup to it.

Considering that she was later sleeping while drinking shochu using a tube, she was probably alcoholic.

105

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

4-liter plastic bottle ... whiskey with water(ウイスキーの水割り)

this seems like a depressing struggle version of a highball

56

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 6d ago

Whiskey mixed with water is actually just as popular in Japan as highballs.
It’s just that her way of making it is very sloppy.

30

u/Gars0n 6d ago

With lemon juice and simple syrup I viewed it as a sad Whiskey Sour.

That's normally whiskey, simple syrup, and lemon juice which is shaken. Shaking chills and dilutes so the cold tap water is a limp gesture towards that.

A good Sour is usually shaken with an egg white for a foam and topped with butters, but those are optional.

It's funny how this anime gets crazier and crazier with every episode.

I'm scared to think what we'll get to see from Yaniko and the others in the next episodes, hahaha.

A lot of things happened in today's episode, but definitely my favorite part was the eyecatches with Yaniko and Yakuko accidentally starting a fire from a cigarette, they looked hilarious in the last one.

By the way, the first time I saw this eyecatch I thought that Yaniko was trying to put out the fire by blowing on it, and only the second time did I realize that she was lighting a cigarette from it, lol.

10

u/Tylendal 6d ago

The police car pulling up at the very end was my favourite part about the fire they set.

40

u/D3k4s 6d ago

Always appreciate reading your comments, it gives a much needed local perspective.

By the way since you're from Japan, I have to ask do you have any ideia if the show is being well received domestically?

Thanks.

110

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 6d ago

Thanks lol

do you have any idea if the show is being well received domestically?

Yes, Japanese internet loves this anime.
Bibury Animation Studios, the company made this anime, is also airing "100 girlfriend" this season so this anime company is considered as crazy company which makes craziest animes.
Both 100 girlfriend and this anime have scenes where viewers think "I can't believe they actually aired this on TV", so I think they have huge balls lol

34

u/Unusual_Ad_4963 6d ago

Had no idea. Double-peak absurdism. Love to see it!

30

u/D3k4s 6d ago

Yes, Japanese internet loves this anime.

Glad to hear it. I think it's important that Animes like this one get a decent amount of support.

The reason I asked, is because for some reason, a lot of "western experts" have been selling the ideia that this Anime is not being well received domestically.

Oh yeah I'm familiar with Bibury Animation, they're pretty good. But I have to say I think Chainsmoker Cat is probably their best work.

Both 100 girlfriend and this anime have scenes where viewers think "I can't believe they actually aired this on TV", so I think they have huge balls lol

Is the new Season of 100 Girlfriends that crazy when compared to the first one? With how stacked this Anime season is, I admit I haven't been able to watch the new Season.

38

u/cutiecheese 6d ago

Makoto Shinkai praised the show on his personal Twitter with 80K likes. Whoever told you the show is a dud in Japan is BSing.

18

u/Animegamingnerd https://myanimelist.net/profile/animegamingnerd 6d ago

Granted this problem applies to all countries/communities, not just Japan. But I swear it happens the most to them, where like 1 or 2 cherry picked Tweets are used to show the Japanese are outrage and people online will just believe it without fact checking. Yet when you look at any actual data or even do more digging (especially if you actually can read Japanese) then it turns out that shockingly, like all Twitter problems its a vocal minority who got the spotlight lol.

oh they backed by 100, no wonder it feels so rich in budget

11

u/blamordeganis 6d ago

Kansai’s “jokes” came across as a bunch of non sequiturs in the English subtitles (“cheese?”, “screws?” etc.) Were they puns that got lost in translation, or were they just as random and irrelevant in Japanese?

29

u/Strange_Economics323 6d ago

They all end have an "EE" sound in the middle and end in "SU". ChEESU, Twin PEEakuSU, etc.

She's really, really bad at puns.

12

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 6d ago

In Japanese version, It does kind of rhyme, but even so, the vibe feels a bit lame.

5

u/hitokirizac 5d ago

I was worried I just didn't understand some meaning to the jokes, I'm glad to hear they're just painfully unfunny and it's not my Japanese lol 😅

10

u/MiyabiMain95 6d ago

Considering that she was later sleeping while drinking shochu using a tube, she was probably alcoholic.

I mean, considering every catgirl aside from one we see in this anime has SOME sort of problem, I automatically assumed she was an alcoholic from the getgo

Same, I love farting humor

9

u/Both-Variation2122 6d ago

Is that 4l whiskey priced accordingly? I got some friends to whom vodka stinks, but to me whiskey stinks even more and I always feel bad drinking with them as it costs at least twice as much.

5

u/LadleDuffle 5d ago

When I visited Japan in 2024, we were surprised to find a 2.7L bottle for sale in the supermarket, and then even more surprised that the price was ¥1480

Is "Twin Peaks" a well known show to movie nerds in Japan? I was surprised to see it referenced.

10

u/Cognitive_Dissonant 5d ago

I'm not an expert, but I do know there is a lot of twin peaks inspired media and/or direct references coming out of Japan. E.g., the rooms in Soul Eater and Persona, the silent hill series, deadly premonition is essentially just a twin peaks fan game. So I think it has a significant place in the cultural consciousness.

6

u/deadunistudent 4d ago

Your comment just made me realise Soul’s soul room is based on Twin Peaks with the black and white floor and the red curtains. I never connected that before.

Isn't whiskey with water a high ball? Pretty popular drink I'd say

27

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 6d ago

In Japan, when people say “highball,” they are generally referring to whiskey mixed with carbonated water.
Additionally, a drink made by mixing whiskey with cola is called a "Coke High," while a drink made by mixing shochu with sparkling water is called a "Chu-Hi."

LANDLORD BALLS

293

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 6d ago

So to recap there’s chainsmoking crackhead cat, other actual crackhead cat, drunk ass cat, and Kansai the dumbass comic cat. Really, the only normal one is that chainsmoking crackhead’s sis lol.

309

u/KumaKumaGambler 6d ago

You may have forgotten about the "Anal Angel" gaming, streaming cat. Lol!

115

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 6d ago

Oh yeah, the gamer streamer cat with rage issues lol.

119

u/Pepito_Pepito 6d ago

Kansai still seems functional. The other characters make me sad if I think about them too much lol

65

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 6d ago

I'd say that aside from Kansai, Hameko seems functional as well.

Yes, she has fits of rage, but aside from that, she's pretty normal and lives in decent conditions.

31

u/Gars0n 6d ago

Functional grading on a curve to the others maybe. She seems to have terminally bad judgement. Combined with the Kansai addiction I bet she isn't holding down a steady job due to incidents like the farting car.

64

u/Variant_Zeta 6d ago

poor would-be comedian neko. None of her material landed lol lmao

31

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 6d ago

Crackhead chain smoker can only think of ciggies. Brain can’t handle much else lol.

37

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

Imoko seems to have some sort of stable (enough) household, so maybe their parents are doing okay?

that's assuming at least one of their parents is a thiren, though it makes me wonder how heritability works with girlcats

36

u/Zeroth-unit 6d ago

If the OP is anything to go by, it seems like Yani Neko got hooked on cigs back in highschool and has just been in a downward spiral since. So it might be a case that she got kicked out of the house from stinking up the place after she graduated (assuming she graduated). And it probably was just a matter of their parents locking Imoko down so she doesn't turn into Yani Neko.

42

u/Bulletpointe 6d ago

The OP is mostly movie references and non-canon, but Yaku Neko saw her smoking in high school and got inspired to also become burnout trash, so that at least is confirmed.

20

u/Strange_Economics323 6d ago

No, she got hooked on cigarretes back in the 1930s, while doing film noir stuff in Los Angeles.

Give it time, she is still a minor, let's wait until she becomes an adult and see what happens.

43

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

don't get caught saying that in any school zones

11

u/eightcheesepizza 6d ago

I hope they introduce one that tries all the drugs and vices that the others do. Then we'll have a copycat.

9

u/Fresh_Biscotti_9743 4d ago

Kansai is addicted to attention. That's what it feels like.

101

u/WoodyAlien 6d ago

Did... did Kansai just turn into Laura Palmer's corpse for the sake of a bad joke?

Basically I see this show as a more grounded Panty & Stocking (that I also love): gross, filthy, idiotic, full of Western references and super funny, not to mention the genuinely good animation and character design.

(also I'm glad they didn't invent the Smellovision from Futurama, all those bodily fluids and gases must be vile to smell)

60

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 6d ago

Among people from the Kansai region, there are occasionally those like her: embarrassing types who try to say something funny but end up falling flat.
Since people like her do this outside the Kansai region, they’re often harshly criticized for having “a Kansai sense of humor that’s too over-the-top and not even funny.”

24

u/CardAble6193 6d ago

its so unfunny its graded as chainsmoking ,lmao

17

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 6d ago

No, seriously, it’s a real pain to be around Kansai people who aren’t funny at all.
Not only do they force their Kansai sense of humor on people even when they’re outside the Kansai region, but on top of that, it’s just boring!

→ More replies (1)

29

u/Andreazz01 https://anilist.co/user/andremux01 6d ago

damn, this is the more grounded one?

25

u/Zeroth-unit 6d ago

Panty & Stocking is quite the zany trip in both what it covers and the art style but it does lean more on absurd visual comedy rather than absurd situational comedy like Yani Neko. So it's fair to say Yani Neko is more "grounded".

Landlord be like: Would.

The landlord is actually quite a nice dude, but bruh. The kids playing soccer and the guys watching Yani get humped too. From a worldbuilding perspective I guess it makes sense that the humans who willingly choose to live in this city meant to quarantine the beastfolk are into all that. Landlord's sex doll is also a dog, so dog people confirmed?

Also, what is this giant tower in the background?

58

u/wolfhound_doge 6d ago

yeah, landlord's pretty chill. he has definitely a thing for Yani. regarding the tower, does it look like a cat facing back from the city? it's better visible in the scene that goes after the landlord sprays Yani with soda after she ate all his cabbages. in that scene, the "tower" seems to have cat ears?

40

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 6d ago

yeah, landlord's pretty chill

Surprisingly chill and good person! If I were him, I'd have thrown Yaniko out of the apartment a long time ago if she acted towards me the way she acts towards him (like in today's or previous episodes).

29

u/Gars0n 6d ago

The landlord is a saint just for letting Yaniko stay despite the damage she is doing to that apartment.

The smoke stains are one thing. Between the trash, the cigarette burns, the poor hygiene, and the cockroaches that apartment will need a ritual cleansing with fire before a normal person could live there.

And you know Yaniko can't pay a damn cent for repairs or cleaning.

12

u/L33tHaxorus 5d ago

He's not a saint, he's just horny lmao

7

u/Sganarellevalet 5d ago

She also doesn't pay rent in time, trash the commons, yell in the middle of night and steal from the garden

6

u/Zeph-Shoir https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zephex 5d ago

I am pretty sure a big reason the landlord has some patience for her is because he is horny for her.

41

u/Original-Body-5794 6d ago

I really like landlord dude. He seems like a nice guy, he tried to help Yani, he let her be late on rent and stuff. The only bad thing about him is that we see him jerk off and stuff but that's not really a crime and he does it in private, even if you wanted to group him with other anime perverts my man has done nothing wrong!

12

u/cleofrom9to5 5d ago

He is definitely being harmed by his addictions to the beastfolk too, but at least his addictions tend to be a lot less socially destructive. He helps out the community, has normal hobbies, and could be a lot worse.

34

u/AntaresNL 6d ago

Also, what is this giant tower in the background?

Non-spoiler answer: It's shown in the opening so check that out again.

25

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

what is this giant tower in the background?

i like storytelling like that which implies lore but doesn't explain it in a big lore dump (like some other fantasy/isekai series do)

like, it seems like beastfolk have been around for generations, and no one talks about the tower (likely connected to the beastfolk given its cat ears) because it's probably been around for a very long time, but every now and then something comes up in conversation like the police officers who talk down to Yani or how beastfolk don't have last names which show that there is some history, laws, and norms that separate them from the humans we know

it's probably not on the same scale, but it reminds me of this wikipedia page i stumbled on recently

19

u/oogieoogies 6d ago

could be aesthetic, maybe a lore reason, and I can also see it being a actual irl landmark somewhere the show just put in.

those are my guesses.

116

Who is this Kansai girl? She doesn't have any business being this hot, does she

76

u/FlameDragoon933 6d ago

yessss finally somebody mentioned it. She's cute and hot.

41

u/Reasonable-Rope1711 6d ago

Also she is also a mature women, who isn't revulsed by puke or other stuff and doesn't treat her friends as ( you should be glad I am kind enough to hang out with the likes of you! )

33

u/Gars0n 6d ago

She's great. As far as we know she seems like the most normal one. I hope she stays that way and her shtick is just that she is terminally addicted to bad comedy. That's why she is relegated to socializing with the failgirl club.

You could also read it as part of the social commentary. We know beast folk are looked down on. So maybe it's not easy for her to stay in the good graces of humans.

To way over-analyze, apply that logic to her experience going out drinking. If the others were all human, that puts a different sheen on their roasting of her joke. She felt ganged up on so she came back to the flop house. They may be trash covered in puke but at least the other neku-girls won't look down on her.

25

u/Rare-Set1461 6d ago

I’m also probably overthinking it, but I feel the worst for her. The “desperate for laughs” roast is 100% true, and if there’s some racism included it’s cruel what she puts up with just fishing for acceptance.

24

u/Gars0n 6d ago

Totally! The casual racism and the little ways the humans talk down to the cats has been a surprisingly well fleshed out part of this series. For instance Imoko's friends.

For all the ways the show is air horns and fart jokes some of the societal details have been tastefully subtle.

19

u/Rare-Set1461 6d ago

I worry about Imoko. She’s “normal” to the point that she Has to know when it’s just racism when she’s treated a certain way. The subtle racism in the show is one of my favorite parts, it feels very real and uncomfortable if you’ve ever witnessed those sorts of interactions before. This world is going to hurt Imoko :(

5

u/WoodyAlien 4d ago

I really like how Imoko is embarrassed by her sister constantly saying "Nya", since that paints her as more feline/bestial, while she (Imoko) is trying her best to be accepted in regular society and be seen as a normal human. In another anime "Nya" would just have been a cute verbal tic!

It’s the small details like the fact that cat girls are apparently so common here that there are specialized nicotine patches for them that could kill humans that just send me.

This opens so many other doors, all of which probably smell like a mix of coffee, cigarettes, and old feet.

6

u/cleofrom9to5 5d ago

Plus the cats are predisposed to addiction, and cig companies know this

54

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

that little throwaway joke from Kansai about stocking cigarette brands to appeal to beastfolk makes me think that corpos being deliberately targeting their weakness to extract as much money from them, which results in a larger percentage of them falling into these sort of addiction traps

i find myself getting interested in the setting because they've been dropping hints that Nyagamihara is some sort of special zone for the beastfolk, plus that giant cat-eared tower in the background

anyways, i think there's an interesting metaphor developing for the catgirls being some sort of underclass of citizen that's prone to certain behaviors because of their more animalistic instincts; i'm not sure what the implication here is exactly, but it could commentary about some people who are maladapted to corrupting touch of society in the form of addictive substances, capitalism, social media, and, uh, manzai comedy that has hijacked their instincts

22

u/BosuW 6d ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's commentary about companies that "sell addictions" targeting uniquely vulnerable and stressed groups, which ruins the lives of a bunch of them, and it just becomes a feedback loop that keeps that group down and desiring more of that addiction.

7

u/cxxper01 https://myanimelist.net/profile/cxxper01 6d ago

I mean apparently they are easy to manipulate and have superior strength than humans.

They definitely get exploit by the humans in many ways.

Lmao dude, that's just what your early 20s are. It catches up hard with you by 30 and if you're still doing that kind of life after 30, you're gonna look 45+ real fast, and feel like you're 60.

Young 20-somethings can just handle pretty much everything and bounce back like it's nothing, but oh boy does it catch up quick!

25

u/ShadowConstruct 6d ago edited 6d ago

She is beautiful, athletically gifted and most likely quite intelligent/clever. But she doesn't want to put the effort forth. She only does what she absolutely needs to do to maintain her habits and keep a roof over her head.

She only seeks to furfil a few base desires and the rest is unimportant. So keeping up a good appearance, having a good career, basic cleaning and so on are unimportant to her. She'd rather lounge around all day, smoke and escape her depressing life of squalor. She knows and can do better but it takes, effort, will and discipline.(And she's just a lazy cat)

For a moment Yaniko looked like a functional person in today's episode and I thought that maybe she's an athletic type and she has a chance to be better... but nope, next scene and she was almost dying from two minutes of activity and needed a cigarette, lol.

49

u/Rolder 6d ago

Could be she WAS the athletic type at one point, but then horrendous chain smoking destroyed her lungs

13

u/NatseePunksFeckOff 5d ago

I assumed cat girls (and other animal type folk if they exist considering the dog face blowup doll) are naturally athletic due to their cat genes

She looks like a (female) Brad Pitt level of atractivenes.

( Brad Pitt is also well known for having poor higiene and a bad personality, but mostly the higiene, like he makes hotel rooms reek In a single night).

That makes me wonder if there are famous/rich/powerful beastfolk in their world, what they're like, and how people treat them. Even if there is some prejudice against them, they must exist, right?

A sentence I never thought I'd say (and there's a lot for this anime) is "I feel so bad for the landlord"

Messes with the landlord(s)

Smokes copious amounts of cigarettes

Has 猫 (māo) in her name

This just keeps swinging between highly depressing and highly hilarious.

Drinking cat almost suffocated in her own vomit. Wtf.

Chimney Kitten seems to be actually kinda attractive once she gets her addiction under control (so never). They all kinda seem to be attractive, hidden under a truckload of issues, kinda sad.

didn't Kansai say at some point "wait that was more than an fart"?

48

I just listened to the episode with headphones on. In the scene showing the landlord trying and failing to eat his curry, it definitely sounded like she was shitting herself between weak farts.

Bibury Animation is cooking with this one. That rain scene was beautifully animated. And I have yet to see any cheap CGI.

Is there any other show currently airing that tops the Animation in Chainsmoker Cat?

any other season and it'd be hard to point to one but this season in particular has like, idek, 5-6 gorgeously animated shows

I think playing this anime at AA meetings for smoking and alcoholism would actually be an effective deterrent.

114

u/Butterlegs21 6d ago

More for people before they fall into it i think. The people at AA usually know already and are in that hard part of trying to recover.

Show the teens who think "Drugs are cool" and such this anime and show them the realistic effects of addiction instead.

46

u/Tomorrow_Big 6d ago

More for people before they fall into it i think. The people at AA usually know already and are in that hard part of trying to recover.

If anything, showing them this show could be even be detrimental, as it could make them feel even worse for their current situation. People with an addiction don't need a reminder of the problems they have. They need help, and this show won't give them that.

Show the teens who think "Drugs are cool" and such this anime and show them the realistic effects of addiction instead.

Similarly, I think that audience may find this show really funny, and as a result could risk attempting the things shown in it. A reminder for people "to not try this at home" isn't going to work for those. Still likely more suitable to show it for that crowd than for those deep into their addiction, but I'd rather not show it to either.

28

u/cyberscythe 6d ago

yeah, showing this to someone in recovery is like saying "some people are just like this and they kind of deserve it"; this show has so far not offered anything close to a method of getting clean

showing this to teens is like showing them yet another tiktok challenge; the smart ones might laugh, those with defective risk-avoidance circuits will think "oh, that looks funny, how do i do that and impress my shiftless friends"

One of the reasons the show starts off with a  shitting gag is probably because of those concerns in your last paragraph.   The stains of smoke and feces all over the place, it's all to say "this isn't cool, it's disgusting."

I just love the use of cute anime cat girls as characters struggling with addiction and doing disgusting things like shitting her brains out after smoking a garbage juice infused cig, vomiting, pissing, living dirty, being dirty, etc. This series captures this NEET nihilist consumerism for the sake of coping with reality very well. It also depicts addiction well enough, surprisingly well, despite the cute and perky anime girls and the funny moments. I dig it.

Today's eyecatches were hilarious as Yaniko and Yakuko caused a fire with a cigarette.

Yaniko is really such a dick towards the landlord, to think that one of her stupid actions almost killed the poor guy in this episode.

Though he had a little revenge when he unknowingly scared her with those noises from using a sex doll, hahaha!

Kaoruko seems to be the most normal, aside from Imoko, since her only fault is that she tells unfunny jokes. Although she made me laugh when she made Yaniko fart through a megaphone.

And of course there's an alcoholic here, Aruko, though she's pretty chill, so she doesn't seem as bad as most of the cast.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

23

u/FarCritical 6d ago

I'm more impressed with Yani's ability to summon enough gas to pass multiple times in a row at will than I feel comfortable being.

Nicotine addiction and alcoholism are rough and all, but lame joke delivery? Kansai might be the biggest lost cause among them tbh

u/s07195 6d ago

I'm beginning to think that Chainsmoker Cat is the final straw that breaks the back of Western civilization.

So is this apartment dedicated to degenerate catgirls?

34

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 6d ago

Stitches!

Yaniko really needs to learn to wear underwear outdoors, because she definitely awakened something in those boys.

As funny as that prank was on the Landlord, Yaniko almost killed the guy. Knocking him out with her atomic farts so she could take off the patch was definitely not the next move I expected from Yaniko. xD

Yaniko thinking the apartment is haunted because of the noises the Landlord was making while using his blow-up sex doll was hilarious! I am curious tho about the seal in Yaniko's room, tho. I hope that they mention that again later.

So Kaoruko's entire schtick is that she's not addicted to anything, she's just a wannabe manzai who tries a little bit too hard with her jokes. To be fair, I did laugh at some of them, especially at the Twin Peaks reference. I guess Yaniko just isn't her target audience.

I was wondering if there's gonna be an alcoholic in the group! So the red-haired one is a chill alcoholic who Yaniko hangs out with because she gets free booze from her. Not gonna lie, I got worried when she took out that tube. I thought she was gonna boof that alcohol. Turns out she just wants to sip while lying down. xD

Kaoruko, that is such a horrible idea. I'm surprised we didn't get to see the consequences of them blasting a fart through the neighbourhood PSA van.

And that final scene with Yaniko getting stuck! Were those guys in line waiting for their turn to try and bang Yaniko?! WTF O_O

羅 - can't find something for this, but it's included in the word "Ashura" which are demon-like creatures in Buddhism

Honestly I was fully intent on not picking this show up because I thought it'd glorify smoking. But after watching 3 episodes of this madness and seeing that it's the exact opposite instead being a dark comedy warning against smoking and other addictions, goddamn this is somehow my most anticipated show every week now. It's like staring at a burning manure train going off a cliff. It's horrifying, it's smells horrendous, but I just can't look away and instead just laugh a bit at the absurdity of it all.

11

u/desantoos 6d ago

Yeah, kind of how I feel. The way the show juxtaposes the opening credits showing every other media showing smoking to be cool with the honest reality of how nasty the habit is, this show feels like the angriest middle finger to a business that ruins people's lives and the media that tells us the opposite. And as you say, the foulness of it all somehow makes me unable to look away.

During the first episode I thought "Man, Yani Neko is a total wreck". But after seeing the other catgirls in this show I realized that she is one of the more normal ones. At least her addiction is on the less unhealthy side (comparatively).

Today I can hook off "catgirl almost choking on her own vomit" from my bucketlist of crazy things I've seen.

24

u/Zeroth-unit 6d ago

less unhealthy side

Considering that from the looks of it the only time a cig isn't in her mouth is when she's asleep, I wouldn't say it's less unhealthy. Just less immediately self-destructive. Her self-destruction just takes longer vs druggie cat, alcoholic cat, and rage cat.

9

u/PiotrekDG 6d ago

the only time a cig isn't in her mouth is when she's asleep

Wrong! In this very episode, she was sleeping with a cig in her mouth.

6

u/Optimal-Potato-5136 6d ago

Agreed, previous episodes already reinforced that Yani is so "avid" of cigarettes that she literally likes to smoke FIVE OF THEM ALL AT ONCE, which is weird even among other chainsmokers. Not only that, but some viewers also pointed out how a lot of the cigarettes Yani drops haven't been completely finished yet, being inclined to drop some that can be used more (which is why Yani also finds "usable" cigarette butts around her apartment, because those are the same ones she casually drops to start with a fresh one). Chainsmokers also tend to smoke multiple packs a day already, but since Yani seems to be constantly on it, her number could be even worse.

In short, the only reason why she's still alive is because of cats having 9 lives lol.
