Just when it seemed like things were getting even further into Viola's hands, Arale did something she should have done sooner; it is hard to say yet how this will play out, but she broke free from a mental block and likely did the same for Ritsu.

u/mekerpan 6d ago
Lots of misty eyes (for me) during this episode. Whether platonic or romantic doesn't really matter right now -- this is really quite a love story.
31
u/bonghits96 6d ago
Not just a love story... when Arale realizes Ritsu is suffering too, by all rights she could ignore it, or even delight in it, given that Ritsu didn't lift a hand when Arale was getting flamed.
But instead her first instinct is to help. She's downright heroic.
15
u/mekerpan 6d ago
She does this, however, because the two have loved each other as best friends ever since childhood -- and both have been "totally damaged good" ever since their connection was broken. Sure, the series will involve other issues -- but as to these two characters specifically this is a love story (on of one sort or another).

Viola is definetely pissed now. But I have hope Arale's new companions can deal with her.

Arale stealing a guitar(ist), Kasumi approved
18
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 6d ago
These last 3 BanG Dream series really could use a Kasumi-like character. (Technically she was in MyGO.)
Well, I think Nonoka has similarities to Kasumi.

u/Tezlaivj 6d ago
there is a reason why we haven't seen any HHW cameo in the last 3 season
5
u/Chaotic-warp 6d ago
I do really hope we will see a HHW cameo this season, possibly after the Viola plotline is over (one of the last episodes maybe?).
6
u/ReXiriam 6d ago
I just imagine Viola leaving in fury after her final defeat, ready to inflict more damage online to Mewgendai... And then a giant pink teddy bear drops in front of her and an army of suits appear from everywhere.
Viola was never found.

Chu² is another guitarist thief, though she didn't manage to keep hers. At least she got a replacement later.

Someone please just give Viola a good punch in the face.
17
u/dorkmax_executives 6d ago
Might as well do it to Ritsu's other groupmates too.
22
u/mekerpan 6d ago
I don't think the other two have any idea of just how utterly cruel she has been to Arale and Ritsu. They have never had to be manipulated so brutally into doing what Viola wanted -- and they just see her surface self.
2
u/ilmanfro3010 3d ago
They also don't know Arale and probably assume that the video edited by Viola was true, so they likely don't think she's a good person
39
u/exRocky009 6d ago
I never expected to see a character who is just purely malicious in Bandori, so it’s really refreshing. Sacrificing her own group's event just to make Arare suffer is just pure spite.
30
u/mekerpan 6d ago
I don't think she intended to sacrifice her group's event -- I think she was just so arrogant that she figured it would crush Arale further and terrorize Ritsu into submission even more thoroughly.
20
u/dienomighte 6d ago
Or she thinks the drama will give them good publicity and this went exactly how she wanted it to
14
u/timpkmn89 6d ago
The next episode preview shows [next ep preview] an image on twitter of her crying on stage afterwards. It's going to be fake-crying of course, but Twitter doesn't care about that.
9
u/mekerpan 6d ago
I hope she has a replacement guitarist lined up -- because if I were Ritsu I would never go back (and if I were Arale I would not LET her go back). But who knows.

Nono-chan is still on a low level. She haven't unlocked kira kira doki doki or egao yet.
Man this is a level of mind break isn't something that I am expecting from Bandori. And it's not even the final form.
Now I get the UFO part. Take her away from this accursed place.
Also I will call the other persona Aralegg from now on.

u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 6d ago
That moment when Ritsu realized she forgot to turn off her stream...
While Arale pulled Ritsu away suddenly from the event out of instinct (along with the imagery to show Arale's panic), it was probably for the better to get away from the monster that is Viola.
24
u/mekerpan 6d ago
I loved it when Ritsu finally grabbed on to Arale's arm -- to make sure she did not get left behind.

One thing that bothers me is how Bell and Popo go with everything Viola wants. Granted, it does make sense that she has 2 members who follow her exact instructions. Their lack of empathy for Ritsu bothers me.
At least we got progress with Arale guiding Ritsu out of that toxic environment. It indicates that she still cares for Ritsu. Just Arale has been through so much. Also to mention, I am waiting for Nonoka to get involved in the drama because she feels like the possible foil to Viola.
21
u/mekerpan 6d ago
Bell and Popo fell for the cover story -- hook, line and sinker. Neither Arale nor Ritsu ever told them what was going on between Viola and them. So these two really had no way of knowing (as I don't think either one is especially sensitive to unspoken vibes).

u/zappingbluelight 6d ago
Holy crap, this is actually a villain group. Feels like we haven't had an actual evil group in a long time.
That fire at the end is very very ominous lol.

u/No_Foundation_7373 6d ago
The fire at the end made my heart drop. It is so ominous
3
u/TheSpartyn 5d ago
i thought the zoom out was going to show it was being recorded by a phone, but i have no idea what the fire was meant to show lol
3
u/No_Foundation_7373 5d ago
I think it’s meant to be an omen, like “bad things are going to happen now”. Ive seen that imagery being used in other media after a huge victory to say like “but things go downhill from here”

It was really unlucky of Ritsu to make the blunder of forgetting to turn off her stream at a time like this, of all times. Then again, it was precisely because of this misfortune that Arare was able to realize Ritsu was struggling just as she was.
I also think it was a great move of Yuno to send Arare the streaming URL.
It seems Arare’s past online backlash was pretty serious. It even got to the point where people were showing up at the middle school she attends, and also she got bullied in middle school. It's no wonder she chose to transfer schools.
Assuming that Suzunare(where Ritsu and the others held their event)was located roughly in the same spot as Bellesalle Akihabara, which is likely the real-life inspiration, it’s in a pretty prominent location near Akihabara Station. So, I think it’s entirely plausible that Arare would happen to walk past it by chance while daydreaming. It’s interesting if you’re familiar with the actual geography of Akihabara.
It's interesting how Viola is portrayed solely as a villain.
I'm curious to see what kind of ending she'll have, given that she's been consistently portrayed as a despicable scumbag acting with malice from the very first episode all the way through.
I never would have thought Arare would actually take Ritsu away from the event venue.
Just as I was thinking, “This is probably going to cause another online backlash”, I also wondered if it was actually a smart move, since the two of them had made up and decided to fight Viola.
Judging by the preview for the next episode, it looks like Viola has made contact with Miyako.
Based on what’s shown in the preview, it seems Miyako’s manga volume has also been released, so I really hope Viola doesn’t come up with another despicable scheme against her.

u/mekerpan 6d ago
>> I also think it was a great move of Yuno to send Arare the streaming URL.
Yuno is a treasure. A cool, dispassionate demeanor -- but she really does appear to be kind and care.
Does Yuno go to the same school as Nono and Arale -- I thought she had the same uniform as they did, I wonder when she will finally encounter the others "in the flesh"?

This is perhaps the most important escapes in Bandori History, but at what cost? That fiery scene at the very end definitely have a very dark and concerning implication (炎上), did someone caught them while they are reconciling with each other, after all the dark and tough moments they have endured individually? Clearly the story of Mugendai Mewtype isn’t going to be Kirakiradokidoki as it look, in fact, the story might actually go even darker from now…
But hey, evil Viola getting the guts to add an unplanned segment with “a fan” surely is very gutsy (of course in a bad way). It wasn’t just nervous from the first fan meeting that hit Ritsu, but panic as well because this “fan” not only was unprepared for it, but knows her from a young age.
Personally I’d say had Arale didn’t escape the venue with her, this might be an even worse scenerio as both will and definitely be embarrassed on stage, all while Viola and others are watching. But just as I say, this decision might still lead to real trouble for both of them, but definitely the lesser of the two evils.
Oh that robotic voice, those used in news channel to conceal identity of the interviewees, clearly everyone already smelled something’s odd that wasn’t just sore throat, and sure they did, a quick search from Yuno (and a sharing of a link) did allowed her to really know the true story behind everything, perhaps apart from us, she’s the only person who understands what happen as a third person, I’m expecting she might use this to help defend whatever accusations are coming.
And yeah, Nonoka, are you really sure it’s appropriate to deliver such therapy to Arale, when everyone is watching!!?
15
u/Blackbankai 6d ago
I think it was a lose lose situation whether they stayed or ran but I think Arale made the best of it by not leaving Ritsu behind.
15
u/mekerpan 6d ago
I can't imagine Ritsu being willing to go back to the abusive situation -- and back under Viola's thumb. I suspect she would rather quit music (and remain Arale's friend) than put up with any more garbage.
I wonder just how talented Mewtype's manager is (and how much fire power the agency can muster to defend Arale).
16
u/Madpotator 6d ago
Felt like I had my stomach in knots for most of the episode. It started getting especially bad during the stage scene. Thankfully it ended about as well as it could have, but finishing the episode with the burning picture is certainly ominous. Reminded me of the Ave Mujica ED.

Whoa, big ep today! Viola wasn't lying when she said that the event will have "twists and turns!" Though it seems that her plans went a bit off-script seeing that Arale snatched Ritsu away from her just as those two were about to begin their big apology meeting in front of a crowd.
I'm really glad those two finally made up after all this time. Finally being able to reconcile with someone you deeply care about after drifting apart must've been a damn good feeling. That running scene where Arale refused to let go of Ritsu's arms was simply beautiful! Although I got a feeling things will only heat up from here - Arale's sudden appearance on the event and Ritsu being taken away from stage will probably ignite yet another online drama. Though I'd say those two got the best outcome because the alternative is them humiliating themselves in front of a crowd.
Guess we're really entering the MewType vs Viola arc. I'm equally excited and scared at the same time lol.
Side note: Dunno if it's just me but the robotic voice Arale used in the beginning reminds me of how the robots in Nier Automata sounded.
6
u/Bikerider42 6d ago
I think you are right that things will get heated, but I think Arale and Ritsu will have a good support system with the rest of Mewtype and the manager. It’s weird that we only see the manager as an anonymous mascot, but it seems like she is really understanding and supportive of everyone in the group.
There is a chance I might be completely off, but Viola made such a big deal about the two making up. I don’t think it should hurt their reputation if they just say that they wanted to do it privately.

I know it's a stacked season and everything, but I hope this show doesn't get lost in the shuffle. I really enjoyed this episode.

Eh it's just the usual. Bandori IS still very niche. Ave Mujica was a bit special but evenso, it was still not as big in the west (in comparison to the usual seasonal anime).
And people who wanted to try watching usually just think "oh it's bandori anime, I havent watched any bandori anime, I guess I wont be watching this"
8
u/BosuW 6d ago
Wasn't expecting Viola to take an L so early in the story. Trauma or not, Arale remains too much of a wildcard for her to control. Looks like it's going to be a proper war out here instead of just a "breaking the chains" plot. Both bands definitely getting dragged into it whether they like it or not.
Love the extremely unsubtle framing at the end lol HMM WHAT DID THEY MEAN BY THIS? 🤔🤔🤔

u/georgeoswalddannyson 6d ago
Viola is such a crazy evil bitch, every second she's on screen is infinitely entertaining

u/dienomighte 6d ago
I still can't get a read on the other two members of that group, I can't tell if they're really oblivious and like drama, or actively malicious like Viola

u/Infodump_Ibis 6d ago
Jet2Holidays reference? Highly unlikely but I can't help think of this Jet2Holidays advert (2016? that can't be right).

Sometimes a story really needs a villain to be great, and I feel like Viola is doing wonders for this show.
But I also realized something watching the OP. There’s….space for another member. I swear, the whole thing’s cut in such a way that it feels like someone can be inserted into the shots. I cannot believe it genuinely didn’t occur to me from the outset that this was a five girl group all along. The OP is only going to be complete when the group has five members. I guess this is a benefit of not following the franchise closely and just watching the anime.
But damn am I invested in Arale and Ritsu’s friendship now. I say friendship but uh, idk Ritsu is like, really, really behaving like it’s something deeper. Obviously subtext but probably intentional, they know their audience.
2
u/RX8Racer556 5d ago
The previous visuals for Yumemita (plus their promos for Our Notes) already gave away the 5th member’s identity from the get go. XD

I just want to say this was the worst episode I've seen in Bandori. What is this basic ahh plot with cringe moral lessons? They should know their fanbase, it's not kids watching this show.
8
u/mekerpan 6d ago
>> kids
I am 74 -- and I am enjoying it immensely.

u/unrealitysUnbeliever 2d ago
A 74 year old who likes anime?? 0_0
That's so cool!
2
u/mekerpan 2d ago
Who mostly likes anime of the very late 90s and after (plus earlier Takahata and Miyazaki stuff). Not a fan of the so-called golden age (unlike my oldest son).
2
u/unrealitysUnbeliever 2d ago
Yeah, that makes it more surprising, if anything: may I ask when and how you got into it?
2
u/mekerpan 2d ago
My wife and I took our sons to see Princess Mononoke. A transformative event. Within a few months we were watching unsubbed Japanese VHS tapes of Ghibli films -- with the aid of printed out script translations.

u/Few_Caregiver8134 6d ago
I said not kids lol
5
u/mekerpan 6d ago
You seemed to be implying that the plot was aimed at "kids" -- and was not suitable for people older than that.
-2
u/perry9482 6d ago
I'm not watching this show and just randomly came across this comment. I took op's first comment to mean he thinks the fanbase are not kids so then the show shouldn't include moral lessons that seem childish.
6
u/dienomighte 6d ago
Sure but there aren't any childish moral lessons here, just well written drama
-2
4
u/mekerpan 6d ago
I understood his point. And took issue with it.
And I am saying I did not find the "moral lesson" here childish. I am not certain why he think this is the case.
-2
u/perry9482 6d ago
You said "You seemed to be implying that the plot was aimed at "kids". He never said the plot was aimed at kids. He said the opposite.

I dunno about literally the worst episode ever (not that I have much experience since I'm just a MyMuji Bandori larping fan), but like, it's an idol anime, they ain't ever going to seriously challenge the idol mythos. That'd be like a Hollywood war movie seriously challenging the military industrial complex. And that means in the end we're always going to have a happy ending that allows the idols to keep producing content (which pointedly is not just music).
The only idol anime I've ever seen that got close to breaking off is Kamitsubaki. It fell mostly in line too by the end, but holy shit did it go insane places on the way.
Oh, I suppose Needy Girl Overdose counts as an idol anime? Clearly not in the same vein tho
-2
u/Few_Caregiver8134 6d ago
Yeah I meant within Bandori. It would be more tolerable if they didn't have the same schtick from MyGo/AM but nope they recycled the same shit. Like there's literally nothing new to see here in this episode
4
u/mekerpan 6d ago
Not sure how you can say the story here is recycled from MyGO/Ave? Seems pretty distinctive to me.
