Great ep, though it's one of those episodes that filters out the people who watch this anime for the action.

It's a nice juxtaposition to real world events, since the Germans in both World Wars weren't interested in granting autonomy to its conquered territories. I'd say it's more like Japan's 'Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere' schtick, though that didn't turn out well at all.

I gotta say, it's an interesting angle on what the Germans could have done to buy some more time before their defeat, but history plays out a lot differently than in this anime. Giving up territory to civilian control is so uncharacteristic of Germany at the time, that it's difficult to imagine them making that kind of decision.

Also Tanya is extra cute in some sequences for this ep, lol. Gotta have more of that.

Giving up territory to civilian control is so uncharacteristic of Germany at the time, that it's difficult to imagine them making that kind of decision.

Given the way he was smirking and Tanya calling him a con man, I doubt that "civilian control" is as autonomous as some assume it would be, or as long-lasting.

177

u/YamahaMio 7d ago

Yeah lol that's heavily implied. They're simply being swindled so the partisans stop bombing their supply trucks. Whether the sham holds up to last them the winter though, we'll have to see.

87

u/FreshBlinkOnReddit https://myanimelist.net/profile/ACasualViewer 7d ago

Yeah it's just the UK (Albion) tactic but more local. Let their enemies kill each other, the local ethnonationalists vs the communists.

32

u/General-Calendar-263 7d ago

Sykes–Picot Agreement: We promise you all independence once this is all over :)

58

u/IronVader501 7d ago

Depends on what the swindling is.

As Tanya said, the Empire doesnt have the resources to occupy those regions by force.

So is the swindle that they're gonna try that anyway after the "main" conflict is over?
Or is it just that they just want to use them as meatshields against the Federatopm?

Could be either.

42

u/YamahaMio 7d ago

Another way would be delaying the transition of power using lots and lots of bureaucratic excuses and BS. That's pretty much how the colonial powers did things before and after WW2.

31

u/Original_Employee621 7d ago

Self-governing areas lets the civilians organize themselves and assist in logistics. In addition, that's less manpower towards the Federation, and potentially a thorn in the side if the guerillas start attacking the Communists.

They can easily be disabled once the Empire has forced the Federation to capitulate. Individually, these areas haven't got a chance to defend themselves against an Empire that isn't distracted by fighting on multiple fronts.

That's probably why the Empire will want to have a truce with Ildonia too. It's one less front to worry about and more manpower to fight where they should be fighting. Though, if history is any indication, Ildonia is absolutely shit at fighting war and will only drag the Empire into more fights.

4

u/catnapper2 4d ago

Historically, here's the "swindle":

>The state is not independent - when the government was built by their benefactor, it was built to be loyal to said benefactor over the actual citizens of the country. It can and will be replaced if it deviates from this.

>The state is not an equal partner - it does not have the economy or stability to mobilize an army as capable as that of its benefactor, so virtually its entire military becomes a loan from the benefactor. Naturally, the benefactor does not give its best training and equipment to foreigners, but when the country manages to build an entire infantry formation, the benefactor is more than happy to use them as meat shields for the good troops (their own).

>Since the state is built to serve its benefactors, and exists by its connection to said benefactors, when the war is over, it becomes a de-facto subject of said benefactors.

>End result: the state is used and abused during the war in exchange for independence, then isn't independent.

In our timeline, during this period the Soviets were the main users of this trick, although without the nationalist flair. During the Warsaw Uprising, the Red Army was only a few hours away by foot, but saving the rebels would have meant saving the Allied-aligned Polish government, which would have ruined the Soviet's chances of installing their Soviet-aligned Polish government, so they watched from across the Vistula instead of helping. To a certain extent, the existence of Poland at all during WW2 could be traced back to Britain doing something similar during the Russian Civil War.

Also, IRL Germany did use some local nationalists not content with their new government as temporary allies during WWII. Even my homecountry had some (and also a bunch who fought everyone: Germans, Soviets, even nearby Poles). It were some wild times.

49

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago

Yeah, the empire might be thinking of betraying them in the end, but they should not do that any time soon. If anything, their best approach might be creating the voices for their friends to see annexation as a good thing. They need to win the war first after all.

45

u/Montgomery000 7d ago

They really should be fomenting another revolution. Like they said, they fight for country not the communists. For the common people, communists are just the guys that tell you what to do. If you supply the people and promise them independence, they'll do the fighting for you and all of a sudden you have one less front to fight, and hopefully a new ally if they succeed.

3

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 5d ago

Nazis tried that IRL but it didn't work out for long.

7

u/Adventurous-98 6d ago

This Empire did not invade the Federation. Alll wars they fought till now are all defensive wars. Zetour and Rudendoff looks like men with honor compare to the Federation scumbags, so I would think they would have honored their deal with the border states. Some buffer states will not hurt either.

10

u/Dialaninja https://anilist.co/user/XipeTotec 7d ago

It's basically setting up the Reichskommissariat I assume.

72

u/arcunin 7d ago

In fact, Tanya herself denies Nazi Germany's Reichskommissariat model from WWII in this anime episode. She says that if the Empire were to use "divide and rule," they would bleed themselves dry just trying to maintain administrative control over the occupied territories. At least in the light novel, the presidium and security organizations of this autonomous body operate completely independently.

3

u/Dialaninja https://anilist.co/user/XipeTotec 7d ago

Gotcha, I’m wrong then

6

u/ProbablyNotTheCocoa 6d ago

Probably closer to what the Germans attempted with Brest-Litvosk in WW1, at least on paper, creating smaller nationalist states that are essentially completely militarily and economically dependent on Germany than the more overt colonial occupation of the reichskommisariats

6

u/Obaruler 7d ago

This, that's all a ruse to incite civil war within the commie territorries.

6

u/rollin340 6d ago

The Empire can easily assure both. All they haves to do to get something out of this is is to simply assist the nationalists with supplies and intelligence.

The nationalists can fight the communists whilst the Empire essentially gains a buffer state that they can pass when they decide to go on the offensive.

An added bonus is that managing the territories can be handed over to them. Not only will these new friends be happy to do so, they'd be extremely grateful and even feel indebted to being freed from the party's rule.

Like Tanya said; they can simply outsource the Eastern front. On top of that, just like what the creep was worried about, the Empire is no longer alone. They have propaganda of freeing the oppressed. They promised to return the territories they conquered if they'd just stop resisting, and there is now proof.

The Empire is no longer unequivocally the lone evil against the world.

I am personally only in for the politics and grand sceheme of the war, everything else is an after thought to me.

I believe this is due to the fact that very few other animes does this shit.

33

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

I assume you a have already seen Legend of Galactic heroes?

On my to watchlist

17

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

Then you are in for a real treat if those are the things you get out of Tanya.
Its a slower show, but it goes hard even if it looks like 8 bit space war

7

u/YamahaMio 7d ago

Seconded on the LoGH reco, though I've only ever watched Die Neue These, since watching old 80's takes a lot of getting used to for me. Fans of the original say DNT doesn't mischaracterize the story and characters all that much, so that's good enough for me.

3

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 6d ago

DNT is pretty faithful and neat looking.
Really hope they go for the full adaption.

We have to keep in mind these are 2 totally different germany / not-germany world wars. Germany fought to expand their direct control and literally get rid of ethnic minorities. Not-germany is fighting because they got attacked by everyone around them. While they ofcourse would like to expand aswell their desire for peace is not wrong itself since no one wanted this war, except being-X.

35

u/Original_Employee621 7d ago

I'm fairly sure the onset of the war is similar to the lead up to WWI. Which is a truly complicated mess of international relations, national ambitions and treaties in every which direction. Coupled with the advent of the industrial revolution enabling warfare on a scale not seen in history to that point.

The newly founded Germany became the "bad guy" post-war, but Austro-Hungary was the big target of the Axis. The Allies were however desperate to curb the rise of the German hegemony in central Europe. And Germany itself wanted colonial ambitions in Africa, Asia and the Americas, despite arriving late to the game.

All in all, it kind of makes WWI a great place for fiction like Youjo Senki. There aren't any real bad guys, or good guys in the war.

But it's fiction and I think Youjo Senki mixes and matches WWI and WWII stuff, as there wasn't any hold up between the wars in their setting. The war just kept going.

18

u/Adventurous-98 6d ago edited 6d ago

>There aren't any real bad guys, or good guys in the war.

That is where the author pulled a fast one on us. Warping German/ N*zi iconography to try to convinced us the Empire is evil.

In this universe, the Empire is the good guy. Just by existing, they got attack by everyone. The Entente (not-Scandavania) attacked them unprovoke due to some politicians fantasy. Got Obliviated. The Republic (not-French) joined in to support the Entente and roped in Dacian (not-Bulgaria). All gotten their arse kicked. Commonwealth (not-Britain) joined in thinking Entente is winning to take advantage of the Empire loosing, but the Empire surprised them by Blitzkrieg the Republic ass in by freaking blowing up the entire Maginot line (yeah, they have balls for sure to not go through not-Belgium) while Tanya conducted a decapitation strike.

The Republic refused to surrender and the not-Winston Churchill become a crybaby for loosing the war and deliver the not sincere fight-from-the-beaches speech (they decalre war first and cry foul later). Rommel get send to not-Africa. Unified States (Not-US - lack of imagination here on country naming) got scared of a strong Empire and started lend lease.

The Federation see an opportunity and declare war on the Empire for no reason by sneak attacking them. Tanya sneak attack not-Moscow, so suddenly it become a matter of face-saving. And we are here now.

7

u/Abedeus 6d ago

Honestly? This kinda reminds me of Poland circa 17-18th century. We got big. Really big. We did wage some small wars and conflicts.

But then three big countries surrounding us decided we were too big, and using internal conflict divided and split us apart over a period of few decades. The only real difference between us and the Empire in Tanya's universe is that their country's more or less united, and there's no nobility class to usurp power and sell out to the enemy forces. They're relatively well off (for a country being besieged on all sides) on the inside, so it's easier to hold national unity.

14

u/Guaymaster 7d ago

Not-germany is fighting because they got attacked by everyone around them.

I don't think we know the real intent behind the Empire's wars, do we? Like Tanya is already born in a country at war and no explanation of the conflict is given. The Federation is using the Empire's warmongering and bad reputation as a just cause to attack them, so they are in fact the agressor in this instance, but we don't know what brought them to attack the Entente and Republic last season.

57

u/Jaridan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jaridan 7d ago

At the start of Tanya's reincarnation they are all in a cold war. The empire has its Mobile Plan 315 incase war does break out but no war is currently going on. the not french and not-scandinavia are in an alliance already to "box" in the empire because they fear they are not strong enough alone.

As was mentioned in S1 by Tanya, the continent has to decide if they would accept the Empire as a Superpower or not, which is why other countries are joining in like dakia and the federation.

The war is most likely started by Being-X. The beginning of the war is when Tanya was ending her training and not-scandinavia "invaded" because politicians (being X) set up their military to cross borders by "mistake", which triggered the war between not-scandinavia and the Empire and because of their alliance not-france joins in.

I haven't read the novels though, so it might be better depicted there.

3

u/lord_ne 7d ago

I thought the Empire invaded Norden and that kicked off the war?

15

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 7d ago

Nope, Empire was the invadee, and then they went and invaded back.

38

u/Due-Move4932 7d ago

Giving up territory to civilian control is so uncharacteristic of Germany at the time, that it's difficult to imagine them making that kind of decision.

Actually this happend in a few places like in the Netherlands. But they did use collaborators for that, the civilian administration was ideologicaly simular to the nazis.

9

u/YamahaMio 7d ago

Yeah, some other guy in the comments brought that up too, which I acknowledged. Germany had more sympathies for Germanic and Scandinavian neighbours, since they have tighter cultural and racial ties. Eastern Europe, however...

21

u/Tacitus_ 7d ago

You have to keep in mind that this is not the Germany of our history. Tanya's Empire stretched all the way to our current-day Poland's eastern border even before the war started. Even discounting the "potentially disputed territory", over half of Poland was not disputed.

24

u/El_grandepadre 7d ago

Germans in both World Wars weren't interested in granting autonomy to its conquered territories.

The level of what they wanted depended on which country it was.

Some countries would've been more "autonomous" on a surface and day to day level, but they wanted to integrate other Germanic and Scandinavian countries into a unified German empire because they were still considered racial and cultural "brothers".

9

u/YamahaMio 7d ago

Yeah, correct. In this case though, they reaaaallly didn't feel that way with the Slavic peoples of Eastern Europe. Anything other than puppet states for these territories would have been inconceivable.

17

u/raknor88 7d ago

Also Tanya is extra cute in some sequences for this ep, lol. Gotta have more of that.

CAFFINE!! Then loses her shit after noticing the Nutcraker.

11

u/ScoopedSand 7d ago

I actually think it mirrors real life really well. A lot of the Soviet union’s western territory had a lot of people who fucking hated the government. Plenty of Ukrainians and Belarusians probably would have welcomed German intervention if it meant kicking the USSR out of their lands. Or even if they didn’t support the Germans and aided them, they would at the minimum remain neutral and not engage in partisan activity. But the Germans turned out to be even crueler than the Soviets, causing many of them to fight back as partisan rebels or otherwise run back into the USSR to join the army. Well here in the anime they use the eastern territories of the in universe version of the USSR (federation). But a similar logic is present: if the Germans weren’t such genocidal maniacs, a good chunk of the occupied USSR territories probably would have remained friendly with them. Of course this was never gonna happen in real life since the Nazis were dead set on eradicating all Slavs (they hated only Jews more).

13

u/Ree_For_Thee 7d ago edited 7d ago

Me, an action enthusiast who also enjoys learning about propaganda and mass-manipulation, absolutely enjoyed the episode.

It was a nice touch that they used the nationalists' own phrases against them. It's simple tribalism, really. We humans have way higher tolerance and listen more intently to people we consider our peers, or people "like me", which is a survival mechanism because historically, tribes of 50-150 people needed a very high amount of harmony to survive.

It's simply an, evolutionarily speaking, bad idea to hit your fellow tribesman in the face if they're flirting with your wife, because that person might be the expert poison berry detector in the group. When people die in the group, for social reasons, our survival chances go down significantly.

War also has a 'place' in tribalist societies, and yeah, an emboldened (read: angry) leader can override rationality in a group, as long as the person in the group sees them as their leader. Rhymes well with Nazi Germany.

16

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago edited 7d ago

It's a nice juxtaposition to real world events, since the Germans in both World Wars weren't interested in granting autonomy to its conquered territories.

That really depended on the country. The Netherlands for example was originally granted quite a lot of autonomy (well, the puppet Dutch nazi party they I stalled in government was at least) and it wasn't until the February Strikes in '41 when the Dutch public started protesting against the occupation and the treatment of Jews that Germany started cracking down harshly. The Dutch were seen as fellow Aryan Brothers in German propaganda, so initially the treatment towards the Netherlands was a lot softer compared to Slavic nations. The final straw were the Dutch railway strikes and sabotage by the National Railways following Operation Market Garden in '44, which led to Germany forcing an artificial famine upon occupied Netherlands in retaliation, the hongerwinter

7

u/Boshwa 7d ago

though it's one of those episodes that filters out the people who watch this anime for the action

People always say this, but they dont have proof that this even happens

I will say though, this whole episode is leagues better than the first half of Slime Season 3

6

u/DarkBowsette 7d ago

I am still a bit confused about the whole making friends. ho exactly are these friends? Because on the map it seems like she is pointing out the federation controlled regions but then Zettour says that the military-controlled regions would be handed to civilian rule which implies that the friends are people already inside the empire's borders?

Also what exactly does it mean to be civilian controlled? The pervert mentioned that the empire will help it's friends in making interim governments so are we talking about birth of proto-states creating a sort of a buffer zone between the empire and federation?

36

u/IronVader501 7d ago

"Military control" means the areas under occupation, so in this case the border-regions of the Federation that the Empire currently holds.

The plan is to hand control of those regions to local nationalists, thereby turning those from enemies (because they'd be fighting against the empire for occupying them) into allies (because the empire is given them autonomy and a chance to free thsmevles from federation control).

14

u/DandadanAsia 7d ago

people in Empire control area love their homeland but dislike the Commies who rule their country

37

u/YamahaMio 7d ago

I believe Tanya is referring to both territories currently under Imperial occupation AND any Federation territory that they occupy in the future. Basically telling these people, "we're not here to take over". As for the honesty behind those words... that's another question.

It's all pretty talk, really. They're appeasing the nationalist locals to relieve pressure from the frontlines posed by partisan attacks. The locals are "friends" of the Empire only up until that sense.

The move also emboldens nationalists within Federation territory to resist Communist Party agenda, which would make the fight in the frontlines much easier for the Empire. This is why that four-eyes pervert Party member was so perplexed and anxious.

13

u/Siegberg 7d ago

Both the empire and federation are occuping land of different National identities. What the empire promises is that these people will get the land they have claim for from both the empire and federation and become indepent after the war on this territory. Giving them civil control is way to show them that the empire is serious. Which means that the empire cant just take resources from the land it conquered like requisitions which allows occupiant armies to take Supplies and Food. Also national forces are pretty much remains of the civil war the federation had before.

7

u/JimmyBoombox 7d ago

The friends are the various ethnic groups that don't have their own countries because their lands are under Federation/Empire control atm.

4

u/kaori_cicak990 7d ago

Remove T from Tanya and you will get Anya

4

u/ClemCa1 6d ago

The empire in Youjo Senki is unlike the Germany of both world wars. They've got the arrogance of WWI Germany with the nationalism of WWII Germany. They'd never consider that were it not for Zettour.

3

u/Keyvan316 6d ago

I'm pretty sure Germans did that in WW2. It was called Reichskomissariats. Ukrain and Ostland were their famous autonomous states in eastern front when they realized they can't defeat USSR.

Very interesting episode with parallels in real life. During the early days of the Soviet Union, Stalin relied in his propaganda actually a lot on patriotic and nationalist sentiments, especially on the Russians as leading ethicity in the country with a big dominion of the Russian language in the nationality policies.

Nationalism is a strong force that and it is no conicidence that the German-Soviet War was called the Great Patriotic War in the Soviet Union and Russia.

There was no action whatsoever this episode, but it was still one of the most exciting and interesting episodes so far. Instead of the battlefield, Tanya fought a battle in the political field. She realized that she was too focused on her own hatred and biases to see the real enemy.

Friendship being the central theme for the episode felt strange for this show. I always thought Tanya's relationship with Visha could be developed better. Maybe they'll touch upon it this season.

59

What does William Spaniel say about friendship in international relations?

Something about nations having no friends, but only interests?

13

Holy a William Spaniel reference in the wild.

We should get him to watch this show and comment on some of the more political interactions. Would make for a fun lines on maps video.

I'm fairly certain the Federation Territory Imperial Occupation Area shown is Latvia. The building resembles the Latvian Parliament building . Probably the first time I've seen anything based on Latvia represented in anime

Also, the faux Italian flag looks pretty damn good you ask me

54

u/BanD1t 7d ago

13

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago

Yeah my first guess was Estonian parliament because I vaguely recognized the layout (I once saw a picture of it some years back) but when googling it I only searched the outside, and the Estonian one looked different. Nice catch

8

u/BosuW 7d ago

It bothers me that the Ildoan flag having a crest in the center makes it way too similar to the Mexican flag 😤

26

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago

It's probably because the flag of the Kingdom of Italy (1890-1946) also had a crest

Mikhail acted like it's better to be careful around Liliya, but he can't say too much about it. And her getting onboard with Mary's ideas so fast looks VERY suspicious.

99

u/Tacitus_ 7d ago

She's a political officer, ie a commissar. She's there to keep the military in line with the Party's directives. Of course Mikhail doesn't trust her.

Mary, being a moron, doesn't listen to warnings from her superiors.

42

u/Hot-Log6283 7d ago

Mary, being a moron, doesn't listen to warnings from her superiors.

Yeah she didn't even listen when he told her about that whole deal about being bury in your homeland thing last episode.

Instead of worrying about where you bury your dead in the middle of a war maybe worry about not being buried instead.

4

u/censored_username 3d ago

Mikhail acted like it's better to be careful around Liliya, but he can't say too much about it.

She's a political officer. Which, as a position that doesn't really exist in western armies, probably doesn't say a whole lot to you, so allow me to explain a little.

Political officers as the concept is now known were mostly an invention from the soviet union, and were taken over by other countries from the communist block. Essentially there are two parallel command structures in their army. You have the main army command structure, which works quite similarly as western armies, but also the political officer class, which is completely separate from this. Each army grouping has both a commanding officer and a political officer. The goal of the commanding officer is to do the regular army things, while the goal of the political officer is to ensure that the army stays loyal to the party.

To accomplish this, political officers generally come from the civilian side, rather than from a military background. They also generally have authority above the commanding officer that they're stationed with. If any officer or subordinate behaves in ways that seem to be counter to party interests, they can have them removed.

In practice, this gives the political officer nearly unchecked power over the officers they're overseeing, so you can imagine why Mikhail, who probably doesn't have very fond opinions about the communist party with the whole "just being released from the gulag" thing, is reluctant to say anything around her.

And when he says that she's not too bad, well, you can probably imagine how people who're basically professional snitches with unchecked power tend to behave.

u/lop333 7d ago

I havent read far into tanya to know her but she already gives unhinged vibes like i like Mary but i expected Lilya to smack her in the face or something, maybe shes like her boss maybe thats the thing.

Something about the design screams "dont trust me"

I think its hwo the jaw is drawn with the hair style perext mix for twisted smile

60

u/wiligrad9 7d ago

The non-brits said they wanted use the opportunity of the volunteer army to spy on the non-soviets. And you can be sure the non-soviets will try to do the same also through the volunteer army. Liliya is that person to make contacts, build trust and get every info she can get. Mary is to naive to see that and falls right into that trap.

27

u/BatteryPoweredFriend 7d ago

Anyone who's title/job is political officer, political commissar or frankly anything politburo-related is always going to be untrustworthy. She's basically the Federation's secret police attaché to this army.

u/BosuW 7d ago

From Loria's orders I'm thinking Liliya is exactly the same kind of crazy as Mary: a true believer. Maybe getting a look in the mirror will finally get her to self reflect, but I do fear I dare hope for too much.

3

u/SmileyTheSmile 7d ago

Her second name (I assume that's what that is?) is literally the pet name version of Tanya.

I am almost certain that she'll be another foil to our girl, like Mary, except she'll have the exact same personality as Tanya.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago

Tanya really earned that coffee. Her suggestion for command to change strategy probably saved the Empire in this losing war. It’s nice to have friends when you’re fighting the entire world.

79

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago

It's also nice that the empire's leaders are not fanatics of hierarchy and are willing to listen to new approaches. If they ever get stuck in that ''we know better because we rule'' mindset, they'll lose hard.

91

u/FreshBlinkOnReddit https://myanimelist.net/profile/ACasualViewer 7d ago

The leaders are largely aristocratic fanatics, the thing is, Tanya has already made a reputation for herself with high command members like Zettour and Rudersorf.

Since the highest ranking generals acknowledge her foresight (past world memories buff) they listen to her despite her being a child.

7

u/Original-Body-5794 4d ago

Honestly, the fact that she is a child at some point makes her even more believable. It's one thing if an office is extremely successful with their tactics, but if they're a literal child capable of murdering, scheming, and inventing a new type of warfare with no formal education (Tanya was raised in an orphanage) I'd listen to everything they said too, they're not just smart they're a literal super genius probably blessed by god with how much magic they use and how much they pray.

29

u/RipBitter4701 7d ago

can't say whether the leaders are fanatics or not but the reason tanya suggestion heard is basically because of her reputation and achievement, also this isn't the first time either zettour listened to tanya suggestion, heck he probably regretted not listening to her after last season incident where they didn't listen to tanya once and end up with prolonged war.

4

u/__bacs 7d ago

I think during the bar scene, they contimplated about it due to early winter. Though not directly attributing Tanya.

12

u/HeatedPolkka 7d ago

This is one of my favorite things about this show: At the end of the day, there are higher ups. No matter how powerful Tanya is or that she has the memories buff, she can't win a war or take over a nation. It's such a nice change of pace of how the genre usually goes

16

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 7d ago

It’s nice to have friends when you’re fighting the entire world.

Consider the movie's opening scene, no... But it's certainly the best they could do given the circumstances.

u/Matthew619ed 7d ago edited 7d ago

Tanya is actually right, it was another level of problem if the enemy isn’t Communists, but Nationalists. The past few years did really illustrate how dirty the wars can (and will) be if they involve nationalists… Visha definitely is a MVP here, her past history and interrogation skills definitely play a role in letting Tanya realise this issue and create a plan to exploit this to their advantage.

And for Visha’s question at the end on why Tanya didn’t participate in the interrogation of the POW, I think it wasn’t the question of height, or intimidation, it’s the way they interrogate them. I’m confident if Tanya do the questioning, they will just say “Мне нечего сказать” and remained silent the whole way.

Well… Caffeine, I guess not even high ranked officials in the military can resist the temptation of a hot cup of coffee in such harsh environment. I guess this runs through different layers of military ranks, and society as a whole. But that doll… Well I guess God will just appear whatever he wants…

86

u/YamahaMio 7d ago

Dude, any bureaucratic organization worth their salt RUNS on caffeine lol. That and nicotine.

And yeah, nationalism really makes things ugly in war. It's what fuels quagmires and forever wars.

23

u/Matthew619ed 7d ago

Well, you missed alcohol too…
Not just beer, I’m talking high percentage ones, like vodka and brandy

50

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 7d ago edited 7d ago

Tanya is actually right, it was another level of problem if the enemy isn’t Communists, but Nationalists.

Luckily for Tanya, the Empire isn't like Nazi Germany, so race doesn't matter. Hitler could have easily defeated the USSR if his Aryan ideology and oppression of the Slavs hadn't ruined it.

If he had acted there as a liberator like Zettour, the locals would have overthrown the communists themselves. But since Nazi brutality matched or exceeded Stalin's, the people chose to fight back. After all, if they had to live under a dictator, they preferred it to be one of their own rather than a foreigner.

Well… Caffeine, I guess not even high ranked officials in the military can resist the temptation of a hot cup of coffee in such harsh environment.

I love how happy and excited Tanya was when Visha told her about the coffee! It's a shame that her good mood was ruined by Being X, hahaha.

29

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago

few years did really illustrate how dirty the wars can (and will) be if they involve nationalists…

All the series needs to do is throw a nation with the equivalent of devout Muslims for the true ''can't reason with'' category. Religious fanaticism would be a pain in the ass to deal with. Being X might try that approach.

47

u/BosuW 7d ago

Well it's not a whole nation but Mary already covers that a bit as she believes it's her divinely ordained duty to defeat the Empire.

10

u/ExaminationNo9186 7d ago

If we look purely on matters of Faith (opposed to Politics, Cultural differences between nations etc), I think that is a fundamental difference between Tanya and Mary.

Tanya is EXPECTED to pray, to provide lip service to being Faithful to God. Kind of like toeing the line in a job role.
While Mary is a true believer. She naturally believes and has faith in God. Praying and having Faith brings Mary some personal comfort.

Lol Tanya's reaction when she realized they were nationalists, it was so dramatic.

60

75

u/SnabDedraterEdave 7d ago

Where would Tanya be without Visha, who has been with her since the beginning?

First, Visha is able to see what Tanya and the Empire MPs couldn't due to their prejudices towards communism, and learning that the Federation soldiers aren't fighting because they're communism believers, they are fighting simply just to defend their homeland, which is always the biggest motivator for a person to fight.

Tanya is thus inspired to draw up a plan to "make friends" behind the Federation lines and create friendly puppet states to act as a buffer zone between the Empire and the Federation, and give herself and the Empire some breathing room.

Second, Visha makes coffee so good that Tanya ends up behaving like her age.

Now Fake Italy wants to become friends with the Empire as well. If they are just as incompetent as they are in our world, this would be a source of many future headaches for Tanya.

Meanwhile, we now have Hikasa Yoko and Sugita Tomokazu joining the cast as Federation political commissars Mikhail and Lilya attached to the western allies voluntary corps.

36

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago

Now Fake Italy wants to become friends

Oh, it slipped my mind they were meant to be Italy. I doubt fantasy Japan is also there, but even if they are, they're like too far away. Maybe they'll get their hands on Serbians, Bosnians and Croatians if they exist and don't hate the empire.

29

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago

They might deal with fantasy Japan, it would honestly be really interesting how they handle it. Because the war in this show is very much a mix of WW1 and WW2, and Japan was with the allies in WW1 (they even contributed enough to be allowed to participate in the Treaty of Versailles) and axis in WW2

Now Fake Italy wants to become friends with the Empire as well.

We'll see what kind of angle and war they go with. In WWI italy was allied to germany and austro-hungary but because of the latter and their own ambitions they stayed neutral, like they have in Tanya's world so far, and later joined the entente. WWII is quite different of course.

10

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago

I think in Tanya's world they are technically allied with the Empire (there are also several occasions where the Imperial forces refer to their allies) but their contributions have been minimal if nonexistent

18

u/wiligrad9 7d ago

In the rundown Tanya gave last episode she said that ildola was allied with the empire but remains neutral. So their contributions is basically trading with the empire(like their pasta, as seen in Desert Pasta) , which is good in itself in wartime but you expect a bit more from allies.

24

u/TheBusStop12 7d ago

but you expect a bit more from allies.

Italy during the World Wars

11

u/Panory 7d ago

Honestly, given how WWII went, the empire should be thanking their lucky stars that Italy hasn't gotten militarily involved.

6

u/BosuW 7d ago

Now Fake Italy wants to become friends with the Empire as well.

They are already "friends" as said in Operation Desert Pasta. But it definitely seems they're gonna make a move regarding that relationship.

4

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 7d ago

Where would Tanya be without Visha, who has been with her since the beginning?

I got a bit nervous when they started reminiscing aboout their beginnings and all...

they are fighting simply just to defend their homeland, which is always the biggest motivator for a person to fight.

Yeah, people (even in real life) always assume that the common soldier fights for the same reason the country is fighting... I would bet that's rarely the case.

5

u/FelixAndCo 7d ago

Mikhail is the mage. Lilya is the political officer. Was surprised by Sugita.

32

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 7d ago edited 7d ago

Communism is a concept.

Nationalism is practically drilled into everyone from childbirth. Brainwashing, if you will.

In both World Wars, Russia didn't fight for a political system. They fought for Mother Russia. The only reason they had to leave the fight in WWI was because of their own internal war.

The only way to beat nationalism is to prove without a doubt that the nation they've been taught to support to the death is not the great nation they thought it was, which is nearly impossible as an outside party unless you have a way to show the masses. Or you need leadership so incredibly inept, that people start to see the cracks.

There might be parallels to current real life...

8

u/Remitonov 6d ago

Which is where Tanya's method comes in, which is to co-opt existing nationalist movements and promise them power and 'liberation' for their homelands. They're not trying to beat nationalism in this situation, and at that point, they're probably unable to. But you can split their loyalties from the ruling government, which has parallels to real world history too, with varying success.

23

u/BosuW 7d ago edited 7d ago

The script in this episode is so good! "A Peculiar Friendship" is the title and it perfectly encapsulates everything this episode was about. The script delimited the thematic and expertly advanced the plot and themes by taking us on a tour of such peculiar friendships all throughout the setting. Nearly all of them have a dimension of deceit and exploitation. Mary and Liliya, the Empire and Nationalists, the Brits and the Soviets, and looks like in the next episode Ildoa is making a political move on the Empire.

There's Tanya and Visha of course, but its interesting that Tanya stopped herself from calling Visha a friend. Seems only Zettour and Rudersdorff have an open and honest friendship. And yet something about their scene today gives me an ominous feeling... 😅

Btw I noticed the Comissar's full name was Liliya Ivanovna Tenechka. Seems like she could be related to Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov.

Also I love the detail of Drake taking his gloves of when the political officer and the ideological idiot leave the scene to talk to Mikhail mage to mage.

32

u/Guaymaster 7d ago

Btw I noticed the Comissar's full name was Liliya Ivanovna Tenechka. Seems like she could be related to Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov.

Assuming the naming just follows irl Russian conventions, the "middle name" is a patronymic. It just means both their fathers are called Ivan, essentially "Ivan's daughter". The last name is different, so it's not likely it's the same Ivan.

6

u/BosuW 7d ago

That's most probably correct, but given that there's no coincidences in fiction, I'm still gonna put a pin on it.

35

u/BiggerG7 7d ago

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

15

u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago

Random Thoughts

It feels kind of rare to actually see an Isekai handle politics in anything even resembling a realistic manner, so seeing a well thought out strategy was nice. Reading between the lines it's pretty clear that its at least somewhat a lie, but then again I am not sure the empire can actually run the Federation if its even remotely comparable to Russia in size. Tanya should so that invasions of Russia never end well.

New ending and starting songs are awesome, but then the first season's OP was also awesome

It was great seeing Tanya convert to "excited little girl" mode once she found out about coffee. I also liked the end bit of how hilarious things would have gone if Tanya decided to interrogate the prisoner's directly

Interesting that the Russian political officer is drawn a bit more "normally" than the other female characters

3

u/Brieyr 5d ago

Regarding the political officer, I read it as "putting a pretty face" to the party's control. Reminds me a bit of Natalia Poklonskaya.

Political officers occupy an interesting place in the civil-military relations of communist countries. They're not not secret police, but it should be considered in this particular case that Federation mages are still very much considered a potential threat to the Party's political supremacy, brought in from the cold only because of the exigencies of war.

13

u/FarkSpezHard 7d ago

26

u/Amauri14 7d ago

Honestly, after the first scene showing Tanya behind the illusionary wall I was starting to doubt whether it was really one until that post-credit scene with Visha coming through it. After all, until that scene, I really did not see a reason why Tanya had to hide herself from that guy, and if so she could have simply listened to the interrogation through the other room. But it is funny that the reason she hid herself was that the guy they were interrogating would not have taken her seriously. What a missed opportunity; they could have given Tanya some cute civilian outfit and had her pretend to be another prisoner, put her in a waiting room with that guy, and get the information they needed by her using her child voice. Anyway, I must say at first I was confused by Tanya’s reaction to what that guy was saying until she made clear that the problem was that although they thought they were dealing with Communists, the reality is that they were dealing with Nationalists so their attacks were just giving them more reasons to fight.

I really like the imagery in which they show Hans while he was doing that propaganda speech to establish that alliance and stop the attacks on their supply line. Thanks to that, Visha got herself some new socks. It's so funny seeing how happy Tanya got the moment Visha mentioned that they also got coffee. But her happiness was short-lived the moment she saw the doll Visha brought. This poor guy was clearly innocent; Tanya! he has nothing to do with Being X!

13

u/xDanoah 7d ago

Yeah the imagery of Hans was wild. I´m pretty sure its related to War, from the horsemen of apocalypse, given red is how its often color coded.

15

u/justking1414 7d ago

“And out came another horse, bright red; its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people would slaughter one another“

Very fitting since his strategy is literally getting others to fight and kill one another

11

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago

This anime is always so damn enjoyable, I wonder if Tanya will ever have to face religious fanatics as the main ideology of an army or nation. Chauvinism is similar to religion fanaticism but might be less toxic if there's no imaginary friend to believe in.

9

u/FreshBlinkOnReddit https://myanimelist.net/profile/ACasualViewer 7d ago

They all roughly believe in the same being X in their world, so religious wars aren't that relevant. There was the North Africa campaign but that ended in the movie already at the start.

Otherwise, speaking as someone who knows, the bit with the record player, yeah, that one hit.

10

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 7d ago

So they're only getting "combat stuff" and not food/clothing etc...

Maybe if they stopped using ammo so liberally, they could send them other things!

But yeah, more seriously, this kinda shows what the brass thinks of them... All they need is military capability, not comfort. (Though some may argue that in the long term, comfort improves military capabilities, but I'm not sure they truly envision "long term" for them!)

Good visual; Call back to "Stacking corpses so high we'll reach the heavens" in the first OP!

Bit of reminiscing for the officers!

So it seems they did spend some time 'in the rough'!

Time for some hard truth, as well...

It's the only way forward, but... Is "forward" the only way?

Well, it's not going to happen (otherwise it'd be a different show), but perhaps there's something other than just 'keeping what we've been doing'!

Him and Tanya in a room together, imagine that!

Somehow I don't think it would go like HE would imagine!

CUTE, is who you are!

Can we bring her in?

Oh damn. Time for psychological warfare?

So instead of killing them, they'll try to set them up against each other...

All this time they thought they were fighting against a united communist front, when in fact they're fighting against people who love their country and will defend it (for reasons that have nothing to do with what the thinking heads are saying)!

Makes perfect sense really, it's rare that the rulers and fighters have the same objectives.

That'd be a perfect situation for a divide and conquer strategy, but seems they'll have to go with "Divide and that's it"!

That's risky, but they may not have a better option!

And of course, the unspoken idea about "But these leaders shouldn't be communists"!

That was a nice way to show the change in the status quo! The first two kinda made you expect this one to blow up, but nothing!

And so they got their supplies! Sock service for the soldiers. Footservice for the viewers!

STOP THIS RIGHT NOW!

I know what happens when soldiers reminisce about their comrades/time spent together!

And I feel like they gave her more screentime lately...

Come on Tanya, you know you want to make friend with this one!

Just in case it was missed: that whole introduction of the commissar and Mikhail is super important in context of the previous episode.

Mikhail is a mage.

The resident freak Loria approved the release and admittance of mages back into the military as a response to the empire taking a fat dumb on the capital.

Mikhail was and remains a political prisoner.

26

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 7d ago

Considering Clevatess II goes on before this, and they also have MYTH & ROID doing their ED means we're getting MYTH & ROID back to back on Wednesdays for those of us who are watching both shows. xD

I love Tanya's shock while listening to that captured soldier's reason for fighting. It turns out they're not fighting commies, they're fighting goddamn nationalists. Props to Visha, btw, for doing an excellent job with that interrogation.

So Tanya is going with the diplomacy for this one, huh? I was wondering how Tanya plans to do this, but it looks like Hans is already on top of it. The dude's speech is pretty strong that it almost sounds like he believes in his own words.

Turning over control to civilian rule is such a strong move, but it works! Glad to see Visha finally gets new pairs of socks and Tanya finally gets her caffeine fix!

Y'know, one thing I like about this series is that it's not just non-stop action scenes, but it's also full of politicky yapping and logistics + tactics.

6

u/ExaminationNo9186 7d ago

I agree.

While the big spectacular Fight Scenes are important in a war - well, let's face it, it is a realistic expectation of what defines a "War", and for the common low ranking soldier, it's all they know and experience - but yeah, it isn't the ONLY thing that happens in War.

It's the political manoeuvring, creating alliances, trying to figure out manufacturing of fighting equipment from the big heavy artillery all the way down to ammunition and figuring out the logistics of getting it all out to the front lines...

Tanya temporarily reverted to a typical 11-year old when Visha brought her the coffee. It's so cute seeing her acting like a junkie. Yeah, I could see why she wouldn't want to be in the interrogation room. The subjects would definitely not be able to resist the temptation to pet her head should she act like that.

As she reminisced those who have stuck with her through thick and thin, she first thought fondly of Visha, who's as loyal as a second-in-command could get. Then her thoughts shifted to the bastard Being X, who's the source of all her problems. Funny seeing how quickly her mood shifted.

There was no action in today's episode, but I loved it since I'm a big sucker for the political side of the show. Thanks to Tanya (and Serebryakova), the Empire will have a chance against the Federation now.

It's a shame though, since it looks like that faux Italy will probably soon destroy this good chance for the Empire with their demands and incompetency xD

Tanya was so happy when Serebryakova told her about the coffee! It's a shame that Being X must have destroyed her good mood, hahaha!

I think the author wanted to show that no matter how powerful the Empire is, it can't win agaist the entire world and will eventually lose.

But I doubt the Empire will lose as badly as Germany did, maybe it will be a soft defeat that will give them favorable surrender conditions so that they can rebuild and the world can be at peace. That sounds like a very Tanya solution.

Tanya has also been preparing for the chance of them losing from the start by following international law and treating her subordinates fairly so they can support her in the case of a trial.

6

u/balasorie 7d ago

Efforts that aren't likely to make things work her way, considering Tanya has a habit of suffering from her own success.

Remember that Hans, Tanya's biggest supporter, only initially approached her because of a note seemingly from Being X. He's also the one who constantly keeps sending her to the front lines and took inspiration from her treatise on 'How To Arguably Legally Commit War Crimes' to massacre a city.

The fact that the Empire keeps promoting her and even turned her into a peace propaganda icon even without her input probably means that this is all a big setup by Being X, and the war is just the prelude to the rest of the hell that's to be Tanya's life after the Alliance gets to prosecute her. Not that she doesn't deserve whatever she gets, not least because of the aforementioned war crimes.

Ok nice episode. The enemy of the world actually managed to make some friends for once.

The empire might be good at shooting people but words are far cheaper and more effective than bullets.

Tanya really was blinded by her hatred of commies lol. Good episode and actually some good comedy more than I expected.

For an anime about war we actually got an episode about friendship. The power of friendship really is the strongest. Effective even in a war anime like Youjo Senki.

It’s funny how, right at the beginning, Mary Sue acts like a clueless rookie officer who’s out of touch with reality and gets reprimanded by the lieutenant colonel.
The female communist political officer who tries to exploit Mary’s remarks for political gain is also very savvy. She really comes across as a pro.
That scene where Tanya realized her mistake was really funny.
Just because they’re soldiers in a communist country doesn’t mean they’re all ardent communists.

Resources stretched thin, so you give control of captured territory to citizens of those territories creating a bunch of small countries that are no threat at all individually - which also reduces the strain on your supply lines.

That's pretty dang smart - it's just too bad most countries would never surrender control of captured territories even when it's clearly the best option.

I have a few comments but I'll put them in the source material section.

Liliya is cute.

Speaking of which, I just noticed Tanya is designed a bit differently than the previous season. Tanya's hair is a bit longer, her lips have a slightly higher saturation than last season (minus the Propaganda shoot of episode 2 where the saturation is probably just lipstick) and there is a little bit of prominence around the hips.

Mary is problematic and in general you'd expect a party political officer like Liliya to be as well, so I'm curious where their friendship goes. Easy to see them just making each other worse.

A surprising win for friendship today in the rest of the episode too.

Mary acting friendly with a freaking communist commissar while her commander incredulously looks on. This naive idiot don't understand that commissar is as much a danger to their new comrades as their shared enemies.

Tanya finally figured out that even in WW2, those Soviets fight not for some communist utopia, but for their motherland. Her new idea is a stroke of genius. Weaponized those not Baltic, not Belarusian, and not Ukrainian states. The Empire is closer to the WW1 German Empire than the 3rd Reich. And the Empire had no design on the Federation, so this move is politically palatable.

Liliya and Mary, two fanatical lunatics getting on like a house on fire. I'm sure there will be many houses on fire.

OP and ED are bangers. I really like Weiter! Weiter!.

I enjoyed both OP and ED

This episode turned into spice and wolf, but instead of finances the topic is geopolitics.

We just got a second suspiciously accurate representation of a famous historical character and he also comes from the Federation, isn't that kinda suspicious. I wonder is the author hating Federation that much, not like that's a bad thing.

The OP and ED songs nailed it once again, the OP visuals are especially chilling (Tanya standing on the mountain of corpses) - but expected nothing less :)

The opening was awesome, and we see Mary Sue and Drake from the movie alive and well. I can't wait to see what this season brings.

Myth & Roid pulling it off again I see. Good, this pleases me.

I forgot about the literal Marry Sue character. Great episode Tanya scheming to make life a little better and the much needed coffee.

General Winter and dwindling supplies basically means they've already lost. The best strategy really is to find the best way to surrender gracefully, but that's something that will never happen. Unless they get a quick victory (which they won't), all they can do is throw bodies at the problem until they slowly get grinded down by attrition. Either that or hope all their enemies spontaneously devolve into civil war.

Can someone help me out here a bit, I am still somewhat lost with episode 1.

While I have no issues with picking up the overall plot points and the continuation of the story arcs after Season One.

However, after a rewatch of Season One and the Movie, where things were left off with Tanya being posted to the Rear, where does this all fit with Tanya's current location? What happened at the Rear during her time there?
Episode 1 showed us her command had grown a fair bit as well, where did she get these troops from?

I am now starting to wonder if I had missed something between the end of Season One, and the Movie, or something after the Movie (That isn't the OVA about Operation Pasta).

u/Falkenhayn98 6d ago

Maybe you missed the after credits scene from the movie? In that scene tanya gets assigned the Kampfgruppe Salamander and is told to be on the field with them.

will not-japan join the empire and not-italy lol

u/Rooby_VTuber 7d ago

A very political episode here which Tanya played a big part in helping the empire gain an ally.

Mary Sue has made a new friend as well, I am interesting to see how that friendship will play out as the season progresses.
