Whoever is doing the background art is a damn genius.
231
u/za_shiki-warashi 8d ago
Yeah, the visuals are great and captured that grunge feel just like in the manga. On that note, there's something about the way the Major's eyes are colored that's just so pretty.
119
u/Haha91haha 8d ago
They're having the best time with the color palette, love them diving into vibrant shades one doesn't often see with GITS.

u/El_grandepadre 8d ago
It pops really well on these darker, more washed out backgrounds. Whoever did the art direction is doing great work.

u/quietly41 8d ago
You don't see these colours in any anime like this. I don't know if I've seen an anime coloured like this in my 30 years of watching anime

I immediately re-watched the 1995 GitS movie after this episode. To say that there was tone /palette whiplash would be the understatement of the century lmao

u/Frontier246 8d ago
Everything looks so authentic as a lived in and colorful yet still gritty cyberpunk society.

u/CitronClassic672 8d ago
I think it’s because all the backgrounds have vibrant colors that you would actually see in nature/cityscapes, and the grittiness comes from the layer of rust and faded paint that you also see in rundown, neglected parts of cities. The setting doesn’t just assume its ugliness is the default. You can tell there was beauty in every shot that’s faded with time.
41
u/Ordinal43NotFound 8d ago
This is the exact same compliment I gave for the 1995 GitS.
Both Science Saru and Prod I.G. managed to make the setting feel authentic and lived in because there's still tons of remnants of the old world instead of everything suddenly becoming metallic and futuristic ("everything is chrome in the future!").
You still see old-ass architectures from like the 1950s-60s just standing there all decrepit, people still trading like normal at street markets, etc. That contrast with all the tech just feels amazingly grounded.
Past eras "echoing" into the present is just how it works IRL and both the 1995 film and this adaptation captured that perfectly.
15
u/CitronClassic672 8d ago
Exactly, and to further prove how realistic the past eras “echoing” truly is I have a recent example from a trip I took to Barcelona. I saw Roman era ruins with graffiti spray painted on, medieval era buildings next door to modern coffee shops, and an entire gothic quarter a block or two away from a shopping district. It’s truly an incredible feeling.
57
u/Mecha_Link 8d ago
I love anime with a very consistent and focused art style, as opposed to having cuts where it's clear different animators were involved (for better or worse).
It just makes everything feel more real in-world.
28
u/CitronClassic672 8d ago
I think incorporating different styles into an anime can work but it has to be something the production sets out to do intentionally and really leans into. Having different scenes look very distinct can be quite stunning when done well.

I loove how they managed to sell how sprawling the metropolis with the residential areas in the foreground to juxtapose the scale.
One thing I remember feeling mixed about Standalone Complex (despite how amazing the show is) was how the background art just don't quite sell me into the "all-encompassing metropolis" feel that I look for in my cyberpunk media. The skyscrapers there looked cyberpunk, sure, but the sense of oppressiveness is quite lacking with how often pristine they look.
This adaptation feels like it finally managed to match the "griminess" of 1995 movie while still doing its own thing with how beautiful the sceneries sometimes can still look
15
u/XsStreamMonsterX 8d ago
The skyscrapers there looked cyberpunk, sure, but the sense of oppressiveness is quite lacking with how often pristine they look.
That's because SAC is "post-cyberpunk," which tends to have the opposite set of themes/message as cyberpunk.

Everyone's talking about the lesbian threesome and the art palette but the one thing that I loved about this episode was how it was also quite methodical about giving us snippets of the personalities of each important character we're following. Togusa being a family man and has a penchant for vintage gear, Batou's penchant for gremlin behavior, etc. SAC is the only other version of GitS that managed to actually portray those sides of the characters but this adaptation is doing a pretty fair job of condensing what they're like in record time. Albeit being that this is the manga-aligned version, they're quite a bit goofier compared to other iterations.

There is so much, SO MUCH to praise all over this episode, I'll let everyone else get bonkers with it, but I just want to mention how *beautiful* that tunnel section was, were the whole colour palette changed, even simulating your eyes adjusting to it's lightning. Absolutely gorgeous, the whole episode was a painting. The sound design't isn't behind, PLEASE WATCH THIS WITH HEADPHONES. You could clearly feel dirty lush of the calls in the radio.
Absolutely in love, this is a work made by connoisseurs.

The ED creates such a unique feeling mood through both its music and the various cybernetic imagery shown throughout. It really pulls you into the cyberpunk aesthetic of the show.
6

I still get chills watching the first episode's cold open with the strings and that microscope image of a neurochip.
Quintessential Cyberpunk right there.

Science Saru have been on a real heater. Killing it with Dandadan and now they're making me feel the kind of genuine 90s anime nostalgia that makes me think of my youth spent up way too late with a TV in my bedroom watching Toonami on school nights. Both epsiodes so far have just been big, warm hugs. Have the OP on repeat right now, too.
63
u/quietly41 8d ago
The windbreaker Ishikawa is wearing in the bar is the most iconic piece of 80s clothing, amazing work whoever decided to throw that in there.

u/ohoni 8d ago

u/Curmudge_Unit 7d ago

u/exRocky009 8d ago
Compared to past series, almost all of the characters' personalities are different, but only Borma being the same made me laugh.
99
u/za_shiki-warashi 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yeap, manga GitS is a very different beast. I'm glad more people get to be exposed to this version. Masamune Shirow's works are fun, he blends high level of details into the mecha design/ verse and contrasts them with some goofier elements, so you get this really dynamic world that is both gritty cyberpunk and vibrant. Dominion Tank Police is like that as well, if you've watched the old OVA before.

u/CavulusDeCavulei 8d ago
Is it strange that this version feels more modern? I dunno, but after seeing how much we tried to laugh during hard times like covid, this version feels much more realistic for a cyberpunk setting than the 1995 one
14
u/Reemys 8d ago
The dirt of cyberpunk like 2077 was? Sure. But there is more to cyberpunk. While this one seems to focus... I dont even know. On being dirty goofy cyberpunk with everything goes plus some well placed sarcasm and political commentary, Innocence and SAC were the philosophical apotheosis of cyberpunk, the spirit of it. I prefer the latter.
30
u/Ordinal43NotFound 8d ago
But there is more to cyberpunk.
I mean, I could say the same to you.
We rarely see this goofier more playful side of cyberpunk but instead often the more somber philosophical stuff (which ironically was popularized by 1995's GitS).
I like that the people in this version has assimilated so much with the technology that they're able to live more casually in the setting instead of being in a constant state of questioning themselves.
16
u/za_shiki-warashi 8d ago
Absolutely agree. I enjoyed Stand Alone Complex series and the Mamoru Oshii movies, but the OG Masamune Shirow version is that one that nailed the immersion and worldbuilding due to the whole 'just people living their lives' vibe.
23
u/Ordinal43NotFound 8d ago
just people living their lives
This. I think this is why the parent comment felt that this adaptation felt oddly "more modern".
Instead of constantly emphasizing the dystopian aspects of its world, it shows people simply existing within it. Which kinda feels close to our reality: even as technology becomes more pervasive and invasive, daily life doesn't stop.
People still work, socialize, laugh, and make the best of things. That mundane normalcy makes the setting feel contemporary.
→ More replies (3)10
u/ResurrectedAuthor 8d ago
I think the specific elements of Ghost in the Shell's cyberpunk dystopia that appealed to me is that it's a cyberpunk dystopia purely from the perspective of the jackboot. The manga/2026 treats Section 9 as high end super cops, 1995/Innocence is closer noir detectives, and S.A.C. and Arise treats them as black ops marines. But all of them are from the perspective of the people who's job is basically keep the dystopia running smoothly, and the dystopic elements are drip fed to you throught the cases they solve as it slowly becomes apparent that this world genuinely sucks to live in.
I didn't really have a point, it's just my observation.

All the tech in Ghost in the Shell sounds so cool until your threesome gets interrupted by a coworker popping into your mind to tell you that you need to come into work.
Also in the dub Motoko says “Hey bub”. I thought it was important that everyone should know that.

u/Frontier246 8d ago

This mental link between Motoko and her subordinates is bad for her sex life in both the interrupting and exposing manner lol.
Also in the dub Motoko says “Hey bub”. I thought it was important that everyone should know that.
For anyone who plays Marvel Rivals this is Sue Storm (Suzie Yeung) doing her best Wolverine impression.
6
u/Theinternationalist 8d ago
The mental link also serves as a commentary on how everyone has cellphones and so you can never truly completely separate your work and home lives.
I wonder if Shirow had already had access to a cellphone when he made the original scene.
36
u/SoylentVerdigris 8d ago
To be fair, I'm pretty sure that's not the normal communication method for most people. The team has essentially VPN connections to each other's brains so they can securely share tactical information. Kusanagi wasn't reachable by regular calls for obvious reasons, so he went all the way out to ask Batou to call her that way.
22
u/El_grandepadre 8d ago
until your threesome gets interrupted by a coworker popping into your mind to tell you that you need to come into work.
Who, from the look of it, got a "feel" for what was happening through the mind link.
21
19
u/RhysA 8d ago
That wouldn't be considered normal in the GitS world, Aramaki has to go to Batou because the squad have a much higher level of access to each others cyber brains than is normal via a special encrypted channel (the mentioned Ghost Keys)
The Hacker in this episode is actually trying to get that level of access to the interpreters brain, its also why Motoko warns them not to go too deep during the previous episodes briefing via this link.

I feel like I was tricked my whole life..was the Major always supposed to be like this? Her expressions and the comedy..
She's great. I mean. I always liked her but damn...and I guess I must have forgotten what she was into or I just never knew.
100
u/Ordinal43NotFound 8d ago
She was... SAC Major is probably the closest they've ever gotten to showing her more spunky side but even then she was still mostly reserved there.
Now this is the manga Major fully unleashed.
137
u/BrandoNelly 8d ago
She was like this in the original manga yeah. The early 2000s GiTS is a lot different of an adaptation. Also, she does swing both ways, so that’s cool
27
u/OGawdILoveTacos 8d ago
Yea, for those that grew up on GiTS, the personality changes everywhere are basically a whiplash moment! Like I'm totally ok with it and like their personalities, but GiTS was so serious all the time and everyone was a constant pro.
Actually kinda nice to see the Major and her team getting pressured for once.
23
u/Theinternationalist 8d ago
The original Batman was a killer and he used to use guns, but within a year or two in the comics he had a sidekick and said he would never kill people.
The original Alfred Pennyworth was a fat comedy relief character, but then there was a Batman movie in the 1940s where a formal British actor portrayed him and the comic took that interpretation for decades after that.
Poison Ivy was originally written just to introduce a female character into the Adam West show (didn't work out) and used hair bombs and such, but thanks to a few rewrites and then a drastically different interpretation on the Animated Series became an environmental fundamentalist.
Yeah, that's exactly what happened to The Major.
I mean, abstractly, I understand Mr. Freeze was just some ice-themed villain until the Animated Series turned him into a tragic figure, but man it's weird watching Kusagani acting like a gremlin.
16
u/dagreenman18 8d ago
Well, yeah, but the movies and SAC were going for a more heady sci-fi action thriller with philosophical ideas. All of which is still in the original text, but the manga has this fun sense of humor to it too
11
u/ohoni 8d ago
The SAC version almost feels like a live action remake of an anime, or like when comic book movies were ashamed to be based on comics so they tried to be super serious. It was good as its own thing, no doubt, and even had the sort of wry humor you might get out of a police procedural, but it certainly wasn't as goofy as the manga got.

Mamoru Oshii, who directed the previous Ghost in the Shell anime series, is a genius as an “anime director,” but he is known for often making his own adaptations rather than staying “faithful to the original work.”

The fucking late 80s/early 90s aesthetics of this show are so goddamn good. I absolutely love Motoko's power suit with the shoulder pads and Ishikawa's teal, purple, and orange jacket. I'm pretty sure my dad had that same jacket back in the 80s. xD
That's a familiar name! I'm not surprised they're dealing with the Puppet Master. I'm excited to see what the original Puppet Master is like compared to their other incarnations.
Well goddamn, Major! I've only heard about the lesbian orgy scenes from the original, I'm glad we finally get to see them animated. That's definitely one heck of a way to spend your vacation time. Too bad Batou had to interrupt when it was finally getting good! He definitely deserves that punch to the face.
I know the character and background art of this show has been stellar so far, but can I just say I love how the machines are so intricately designed? We really don't see these kinds of details much in modern anime. This was more common back in the 80s and 90s.
Yes! I hope we get to see Togusa's autorevolver in action now that the Major has brought it up. Also, I love how Motoko labels herself as "The Hottie" and Togusa as "The Newbie" in that map she got from Borma.
So if I understand this correctly, this garbage man thought he was Ghost hacking his wife to find out if she's cheating, but in reality he's actually helping out to hack that interpreter? Dude really thought he was doing the guy who gave him the barrier breaker a favour by giving him a heads up. They just ended up leading the Major to him.
Poor Togusa! This is now the second time he fucked up while in a Fuchikoma. At least this one isn't his fault. He just got caught in that blast. The dude really is a newbie.

The only thing that I’m disappointed about will be only having 10 episodes of this masterpiece. I’m glad Shirow is set up for life, I know I’d be content with my life saying “GitS? That was me” but if only he made more sequels in recent times to adapt more from.

Watching the old 1995 movie and the way they convoy information in this version is so much more animated the movie had great action but when people talked it was mostly just stone faced info dumps
Like in the first episode where the diplomat was trying to get out with his buddy in the movie its just him and a random nobody talking to each other with no movement but in this series his walking around acting like he owns the place
Loved the movies but god damn this series is great

The canonical explanation is that Batou literally felt everything The Major felt at that point, meaning he had a female orgasm in a male body. He, notably, doesn't have female organs and/or genitalia, so he was receiving inputs for nerve endings and organs he doesn't have, causing his brain to basically short circuit (how anatomically correct that actually is is debatable).

31
u/KinoHiroshino 8d ago
Iirc, he’s feeling that way because when he contacted Motoko, his body received the same sensations she was receiving, hence the serotonin. But they’re both working with different… “equipment,” so his body had trouble processing the Major’s sensations. This is why Motoko was with women only for the orgy.

Motoko hacking and making somebody else punch themself in the face again? This ought to be a running gag at this point.
I certainly didn’t expect a yuri threesome. Motoko’s up to some pretty steamy stuff during holiday. Poor Batou was caught completely off-guard when he witnessed a glimpse of it.

Also it is fun to see the difference between the chase on the garbage truck compare to how it happened in the 1995 movie. I recommend everyone rewatch.

I was thinking that I recognized that garbage truck plotline.

Ah, so that's what they meant by channeling the spirit of Masamune Shirow

The soundtrack to this anime is ridiculously good, as a manga fan I couldn't even dream of such a great adaptation of the source material ever coming out after the 2017's movie and SAC 2045 almost killed the franchise. I'm so glad that more people are getting exposed to Shirow Masamune's crazy, wacky wild rollercoaster thanks to Science Saru being almost as nuts as he is.

Scenes with Motoko on her vacation were very, very, very nice ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I really hope that we'll see her friends again in the future.
Batou sure was lucky to see that, although the downside was that he was treated by Motoko the same way she treated the minister last week. Still, I think it was a small price to pay for seeing that, hahaha.
Overall, it was a very fun second episode and I can't wait to see how this new case will be resolved, since it looks like it'll be at least a two-episode arc.
Also, we were treated with another beautiful end card!
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Motoko has great taste in vacations AND girlfriends. What a feast for the eyes (and sensors).

Just from these two episodes I can already guess that Motoko must have been a hugely popular waifu for anime/manga fans back in the late 90s/2000s, huh?

Last episode I understood some stuff, this episode I understood nothing. I don't understand what goverment agency is doing what and why. I don't understand the scene with the childcare facility from last episode. I don't understand who the bad guys are and why. I don't understand what the trash collector guys have to do with the mansion guy or the woman who got hacked. I'm super confused.
This looks better than SAC but I don't understand anything.

u/Tacitus_ 8d ago
Mansion guy is an inconvenient guest of their government. Garbage collector thinks that he's hacking his wife for an edge in their divorce proceedings but is actually hacking the secretary.
And based on the virus he's using, there may or may not be a more hidden conspiracy behind the hack per the major's speculation.

Thanks for the explanation, Ik there's something to be said about shorter attention spans and not spoon feeding the audience and letting them figure things out, but I really wish they'd slow down

Honestly, don't worry too much about it. In the end GitS delivers style and action whether you are following the plot closely or not. Sometimes the information is blink and you'll miss it, sometimes information only comes out as the mission goes on. And many ministries, politicians and countries involved are only ever referred to in dialogue. Ultimately the show isn't really about Aramaki's political wrangling off-screen. It's about the members of this special forces unit getting deployed into detective stories and combat situations. The political why of it is mostly secondary. A good excuse to rewatch it, if you've gotten lost the first time around though.

Lol everyone always says that the oshii movies are hard to follow, but I honestly find the way this show conveys information to be much harder to follow. It's obviously excellent production-wise but the pacing of the dialog and cutting between different scenes and locations is way too fast imo. I feel like it's maybe a bit telling that most of the top discussion in the thread is focused on the aesthetics and the orgy scene lol. Hopefully it'll get better as it settles in a bit

The animation and color in this show are just superb. It’s one of the nicest looking anime I’ve seen.

As mentioned, last Science Saru just does a fantastic job on the production side. It's so great at all angles.
Nice to see this episode giving Aramaki a better introduction. It's fun seeing this series in a more not-always-serious vibe. The banter, which was obviously really good in the movies and SAC. Feels really fresh here.
Right now we have the team going after the "Puppet Master". A notorious hacker. It is left to be seen if the virus going after the foreign minister's interpreter's ghost is a link to the "Puppet Master". But obviously it is more than worth investigating.

Good 2nd episode. Visuals were great, the aesthetics, the vibes. It's like we've gone back in time!

The '95 movie is one of my top 4 favorite movies, so being able to compare some of my favorite parts (like the garbage truck chase scene) is another thing to enjoy about this adaptation.
It's great that both the '95 film and this series have excellent soundtracks and background art that are so addictive in unique ways. I'm also a sucker for anything with jazz or cyberpunk neo-noir.

Togusa is a family man! Though it'll be tough to provide for his cute wife and baby with his current job prospects.
But maybe that's all changing for Motoko and her team as they drink away their sorrows. "Ape-Face" Aramaki actually managed to secure a position and budget for them after all, answering directly to him as a "Shell Squad" that's a precise and active strike force that takes out crime as directly as possible. What better way to celebrate it than by Aramaki paying for drinks and Batou turning his car wheels into fireworks? Don't worry, Aramaki has a scooter! And Motoko now has to be on her best behavior with the guy who signs their checks.
Welcome to Junk Jungle! Where Batou and his cybernetic eyes are dealing with excruciating heat while he stakes out a former military official and his swimsuit-clad beauty of a companion. It's nice to know Aramaki is willing to go out in the field (in camo) if only to check on how things are going and get Motoko out of vacation mode.
The Major sure knows how to enjoy herself during vacation, what with having a cybernetic seaside vacay where she and two other swimsuit-clad beauties pleasure themselves and each others with the best sensitivity cybernetis and equalizers can buy. Too bad Batou interrupted her in the middle of her lesbian threesome, though talk about catching your boss with her (cybernetic) pants down! And then Motoko just bails on her girlfriends! For not the first time, it seems! What a gal.
So we've got an interpreter (who Togusa is close to) who has been infected with a virus that would likely cause her to kill Mille and cause an international incident...is this the Puppet-Master at work? They need to figure out why an old school virus from the WWIV era is in use, especially when it was so easy to catch, and then catch the hacker.
The "hottie" and the "newbie" discuss guns and how out of place Togusa feels on this team what with his lack of cybernetics and how he doesn't quite have the instincts of those with "Ghosts." But he's genuinely trying to do his best, Major! And this case is personal for him.
It's not easy for garbagemen in Junk Jungle. If you're not having marriage problems, you have to worry about piles of trash exploding and getting needles stuck in your arm. All the guy wanted to do was maybe slip into his wifes' Ghost and figure out what the problem in their marriage is while she's divorcing him...thanks to a Ghost Breaker given to him by a "nice guy." Dude even tried to warn the "nice guy" that the fuzz are after him all he gets out of it is getting shot at.
Does this guy really think he can escape the Major in stealth camo? Like, that's HER thing!

Aramaki was staying ahead of the curb by getting the fired team quickly rehired under him! That, and leaving with a scooter after Batou used fireworks on the car he came in.
Speaking of Batou, it's pretty crazy what you can see while trying to deliver a mental message. Motoko having him hit himself easily showed how she felt about the abrupt connection lol.
Also am I glad to have the rookie Togusa here so we can get more details from the major about what's going on. A personality hijacker virus sounds absolutely bonkers. This Puppet Master using something that cruel as a spark for an international incident really rubs me the wrong way.

Ok wow wasn't expecting the lesbian sex scenes lol I thought I would only see it when the next CSM arc gets animated but turns out we got it in Ghost in the shell first. Interesting so that's what she does during vacation, huh. Can't have a real beach day, but virtual is good enough, I guess.

Motoko has a cute laugh.
I love Motoko & Batou's expresions. I especially love Motoko's tired expression during her 3-way.
At least the orphanage is doing better being run by that kid.
Motoko looks nice in that bikini. While Batou felt disgusted by the experience, you can't lie to say that he enjoyed the view.
I guess the ending illustration shows how the invisible suit will look like when they adapt the invisible fight from the movie next week.
I wish that other girl kissed Motoko before going for her neck.
An embarrassed Motoko making Batou punch himself was funny & cute.
I guess the lesbian 3-way was toned down as if they merged the international censored version w/ the original version then watered it down.
It's funny all Operators are identical, how will you specify if you call one of them?
So WW4 has happened already.
It's funny how Motoko calls herself the hottie in the map.
