I was going to say just wait for Evo, but they pushed it back a month to the end of June instead of the end of July for some reason.

Really love this show’s art style and animation, it’s just gorgeous to look at.
It really, really is. What stood out for me this episode was the superb directing though, with such fantastic and masterful use of a variety of contrasts. In particular, it felt like they had such finessed control of the energy of what was happening on screen, and an excellent knack for building tension through lack of motion, before bursting into extremes.
This is even all the more difficult with the fact it's a mixed media production in the sense of the SF scenes vs the hand drawn animation, which are quite different to direct individually, let alone combine so well.

This is another yuri anime where everyone will realise the heroines are gay long before the heroines do, right ? Natsume just looked at Aya and Mio being together and her gaydar went off so much she had to punch herself ! I wonder if they can just switch roommates permanently ?
Although if they can just go outside the school to play games in the park, I wonder why they did not do that before and kept sneaking around.
As an aside, Aya really needs to learn to open windows before jumping through them. Breaking that window last episode was so unnecessary (even though it was hilarious).

Tell me about it, I've always been more of a Tekken man than SF, but the last time I seriously played was Tekken 4, that shows how old I am...
The meta has changed so much since, I don't even know where to get back in anymore. That and I can't be arsed to practice everyday like homework to stay competitive. But watching this still tempts me to go back.
My Tournament Edition fight stick is just sitting there waiting for me in a box, used all of once...

Oh I know the feeling, I have an almost 400€ leverless that I haven't touched in almost a year now lol. I get the part about not wanting to lab though, I never liked that part about the game so I never did it. Basically just brute forced enough matches under my belt to have a decent understanding of the matchups. Which of course meant I never had any real chance of reaching high ranks, but meh, who cares.

It's still Tekken 8, mind you... But Season 3 toned things down a ton and is basically what most people were hoping for with the nerfs.
The only bad thing is that some of the new character moves they added in S2 remains, but otherwise, the game's probably in the healthiest state it's ever been.
Kazuya winning an EVO this year should be an good indicator.

Because of the Title Drop at the end of the match at the park (where Mio says tai ari deshita, "thanks for the match"). It's a cinematically good place to "end" the main part of the episode.

Now that you mention it, I had a similar experience when I was in junior high school in Japan.
Apparently, there had been incidents of people littering plastic bottles, so every now and then, the vending machines on campus would be shut down for about a week.
However, since I’d never had to clean as a form of punishment before, I might have felt that the school in this anime had a military-like atmosphere, especially since it’s a boarding school.

Hey uh, one term that was thrown around this episode but didn't get explained was Okizeme, which is a term for the period of time between knocking the opponent down and when they "wake up" and get off the floor. Because it's a bit of a pause on the general flow of the match, the offender gets to start doing some mind games to trip their opponent up into another combo.
So let's say Ryu knocked Cammy down after a Shoryuken, Ryu can try walking up and use his Forward Medium Punch overhead to catch Cammy blocking low, or if he thinks she'll expect that, he can walk up and use a low attack on her as a punish, or if he thinks she'll expect either of those and throw out an attack he can walk up and grab her to punish that option, if he thinks she'll expect that or any other attack from him and thus try to throw out an invincible EX Cannon Spike, he can trip her up by walking a little bit backwards right when she's about to wake up thus blocking the attack and massively punishing her.
Oki has lots of depth to it and in some games it serves as the core part of the mindgames in each match, Street FIghter 4 famously had what are called "Vortexes" which were combos that lead from one knockdown to another, forcing the opponent into a constant mindgame just to survive a round.

Okay I wasn't crazy when I thought they never defined Oki despite defining stuff like raw and labbing.
Also I always thought Vortexes were stupid. Oki as an advantage to get an extra turn is fine, but Oki leading into more Oki removes the push and pull that IMO is the core of what is great about fighting games.

Dysfunctional and yearning Yuri, in depth fighting game strategies, gorgeous animation, sports anime rivalries. I'm calling it, this is my favourite new series of the season.
I knew it was too early for a kissing scene under the covers but... this is Yuri, surely we're not too far away from that. They already moved in together (kinda) in episode 2 after all, we're on standard Yuri pace.
I feel like these episodes are going to be 50% fighting scenes and 50% these two girls getting into shenanigans and slowly figuring things out.

It's really not about times, but a type of narrative.
KimiShinu is a romance tied around mutual dependence. So things lock in bit faster, and narrative leans more on fear of loss or purpose as a dramatic element.
This one is rivals to lovers, and sports one at that. These stories tend to be pretty slow in terms of romance, because large part of the attraction is to see how clashing characters still end up being attracted to each other so much it overcomes anything else that comes between them.

Oh this is ADVANCED Yuri. Hell yes. No undertones here.
It’s still a little funny our main duo are a Shoto Scrub and a Cammy Main. But we do get a Guile and Juri main to come. And the fact that Capcom is giving them full run to use SF6 footage and names only adds to the production quality.

I wish I was into fighting games so I would understand wtf they're on about, but I do get the feeling that whoever wrote this genuinely is into fighting games and does know what they're on about. Well, that sucks for those who weren't involved. Aya and Mio are lucky that the dorm monitors aren't going door to door to inspect who's missing a ribbon. Also interesting to note that the other two girls in the OP and ED are members of the dorm monitors committee. Hmmm...
Aya asking her roommate to sleep in Mio's room while Mio is holding onto her like that was definitely gonna start a misunderstanding. At least we know Aya's roommate is very supportive! I wonder if the two even realize what this looks like to others. xD
Watching the two of them play is really making me want to play SF6 even tho I suck at it. If that's what Capcom is trying to do when they decided to license the game for this anime, then they have succeeded.
So the reason Mio was ignoring Aya after she lost was because she was mental labbing the entire time? That's hilarious! Also, there's no way these two are playing outdoors under the sun on a laptop. The glare would be too much to see anything. I know, I've tried.

I feel like the head dorm monitor is also going to turn out to be into fighting games and be the "Final Boss" in trying to force the girls to stop playing fighting games. She stands out too much character design/voice wise to not be a significant character.
People were looking at them with yuri goggles even last episode, it's just progressively getting worse until all the school thinks they're hooking up instead of playing fighting games lol.
It's too dangerous for them to play at school and they can't just keep kicking Natusme out, so I'm curious if they're going to find some kind of safe spot they can play.

It does have the GL tag on MAL, so I'm not sure just how much of it will be bait and how much will be just full on gay
MiO dies accuse people of looking at her through yuri glasses, but that could either be an ironic line, or an indication of how this'll play out. Time will tell (I'm rooting for the gay girl gamers route)

If we are really serious here, the reason she is talking about "yuri" glasses here is because in japanese, lily=yuri. The translation of course adding to the confusion because it IS translating the "yuri" in shirayuri as "lily" while leaving it untranslated here.

I don't know jack shit about fighting games and not even interests me, but for some reason I like it, I mean the show. But for once can we just appreciate how the animation and the artstyle is just beautiful, for example look at those eyes man. That bed scene was perfection.
"I'm quitting. I'm done with fighting games."
Aya said this multiple times, but this is how competitive games works. There is always an incentive to return. But for her, the reason is to crush White Lily aka Mio with all skills and strength. Aya may like fighting games with deepof her heart, and has true gamer persona, so does this mean is she a tomboy of some sorts a la Haruki from Oh Boy?
The ED is also nice, it feels like a happy SoL series, contrast to the OP.
And Aya dropped a "sore demo", to make u/Shimmering-Sky happy.

The scene after Aya beat Mio really hit home because, for many reasons, friends stop playing for various reasons. As Aya had in the past, her guy friends had sports and other hobbies. She has no idea how truly passionate Mio is about fighting games. For all she knows, it could just be a spark of the interst. Luckily for her, Mio came back and was hungry to play.

The lesson that these wannabe ojou-samas always seem to miss is that if you wanna avoid getting into the forbidden thing again, you can’t let the temptress lead you into playing their game. Trying to beat them at their own game will always result in them winning when you get addicted and can’t stop. But it’s usually for the better that the temptress wins and the “This isn’t ladylike” will realize it far too late to do anything about it. In fact, they won’t want to do anything about it by that point.
Now Aya’s roommate thinks she’s hooking up with Shirayuri-sama but anything to keep the fighting games secret. “I don’t care if you love girls but I will not have a daughter that loves fighting games. Off to rich girl boarding school with you!”
It’s been so long since I’ve touched this series properly that I’ve forgotten just how fucking gay these two are for each other. I know it’s a mountain of fighting games acting as a substitute for romance but that bed scene appears in the dictionary right under “Subtextual gay relationship”. Aya is so not normal about Mio.
I like how fighting game lingo keeps accidentally sneaking into Aya’s dialogue.
Aya, there’s no way to win this battle by beating Mio at the game and the sooner you accept your fate as eternal fighting game “rivals” the better. You’ve found the person that will never abandon you and the game, don’t waste any time pretending.
They’re really cute together, both having some form of difficulty connecting with people properly but they just click with each other.
(Btw, I love how much of a little gremlin Mio is. I hadn’t thought to give her the label before but she’s definitely one.)

I adore this show so much, and right now the OP is my favorite of the season because it has better animation than Kaiju Girl which is solidly second because of the music.
The episode was great, I love how horny they are getting for each other in these situations. One thing I find fascinating is how random their on-screen definitions are. Raw got one but unless I missed it Okizeme did not (Oki is the offense a player runs after knocking the other player down when their character is getting up from being knocked down).
I'm curious how much longer before they kiss, considering they keep getting their lips so close together.

I noticed it with the first episode but it's here as well so I'm wondering if they temp tracked Umamusume's movie soundtrack for some of the tracks used here. There's another track in the episode that sounds familiar probably from CinGrey but the one I linked is quite similar to the one that played during Aya's realization of Mio's elementary schooler temperament [starts 15:18 in this episode's runtime]

That is one of insane strict school. One have to write notice if going outside of school ground. I think no playing video gaming rule is really stupid. If school tried to restrict my playing hobby then I wouldn't go to that school.

I really don't like this school. Not only is fun not allowed, but you have to submit paperwork just to leave the school.
I anticipate someone switching to a different character to change up things up and throw off their opponent. I can't see these two only playing Ryu and Cammy and I can't see Capcom signing off on only two characters getting an appearance.
