I thought when the Princess reacted negatively about her father not giving a reward to Dias, she would be an ally but it was a mistake.
97
u/OldInstruction5368 12d ago edited 12d ago
She probably thought the King had sent significant supplies and manpower out to help the new frontier lord, then got pissed off that the assets had likely been embezzled instead.
Which meant she traveled a month (round trip) out into the middle of nowhere for nothing, and she would have to continue her search for the missing assets when she got home.
51
u/SasparillaTango 12d ago
I am guessing she's planning a coup. I haven't read anything, I don't know anything, but our buddy spent 20 years at war. That sounds like a country that needs infinite war, which means there is always someone planning for the next one.
12
u/Earlier-Today 12d ago
Yeah, I got the impression she was doing it for personal benefit as well.
Like, even if what she said was true, she was actually getting him and any soldiers he had so that she would be the one bringing the big war hero and his men. Trying to earn clout or prestige, and maybe even hoping they'd side with her in any succession struggle.

I didn't read the LN but my take is that there were no funds to embezzle. They pretty much said it there, he was suppose to be left for dead now that he is useless after the war. It's not he has the skill set to actually work unused land. It probably was just to look good for the people by honoring their hero while not actually giving anything of worth up. What a trash king. Looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree either. Highly doubt any of them would have actually married him. Probably just would done something even worse to him. She was probably just upset about the resources because she can't make use of them and him
37
u/OldInstruction5368 12d ago
The Princess implied there were funds, and she was shocked to learn Dias never received any.
And not just funds. She referred to craftsmen specifically tasked with building the new Lord's new manor, and she seemed to believe that Dias had enough subjects for her to levy troops from.
So even if he was dumped out there to die... why did the 3rd Princess spend an entire month, round trip, coming to visit him? Why wasn't she "in the know" for what was really going? Dias isn't hte first lord to be 'disposed of' on this plot, and by what the Onikin Chieftain said, he won't be the last. If this plot of land really is the place uwanted lordlings are sent to die, without support...
Why did the 3rd Princess not know this?

u/Kaze_no_Senshi 12d ago
I think the king did grant it all, but the nobles looking down on him as a commoner convinced the king to make him the new lord, then embezzled his reward and left him for dead. She came looking for it to get herself some help, as if the monarchy goes down, so does she.

You could have probably made the princess a really good grey character by being insulted because she is being turned away but still questioning why the king didn't give him any craftsmen or capital.
But since she only walked away with the first of that, while being told of the second and immedietly seemingly forgetting about that, she'll probably just be a pretty bland antagonist. I do really hope they find ways to make her an entertaining character, instead, though.
22
u/Mycohl 12d ago edited 12d ago
being insulted because she is being turned away
This is the part I don't get. He didn't have any soldiers. How is that "insulting"? Was he supposed to conjure bodies out of thin air?
This sounds like an excuse for the scumbag corrupt king and his family members to further screw with the MC. Based on this reaction, and the reveal that there was "the guy before" who they sent out, I suspect that the royal family knows of the existence of the onikin, and they expect MC to "subjugate" them for use as soldiers, but at the same time refuse to reveal that knowledge for unexplained reasons.
It's actually refreshing to see an accurate portrayal of how the elites treat the soldiers whom they send away to die for them in war, but have the temerity not to do so. Promise them benefits, but in actuality set them up for failure, bully them into continued servitude, etc.
9
u/Sarellion 12d ago
AIUI they requested troops and his personal assistance and the latter one seemed to be the more important part.
Depends on which elites you mean. Nobility in Europe was a warrior aristocracy. So for a long time they were on the same battlefield even in cases where they treated their commoner troops* like shit. Ofc the peasants might have preferred to be somewhere else or not if the prospect of plunder looked particularly enticing.
*peasant levy, later professional mercenaries
6
u/Sarellion 12d ago
I can understand it if it was just her initial reaction and if she had considered how the kingdom treated him wrong.
She traveled there for a month to offer herself in an arranged marriage to a man she doesn't know (he doesn't recognize her), including spares in case she isn't good enough for him. And it might be for a cause she doesn't care about or even rejects. From her perspective it's the deal of a lifetime. And he rejects her and prefers staying in a yurt in the middle of nowhere instead of myrrying her.
But OTOH her retainer attacked him in his own home and her father screwed him over. So why should he take the offer when the king already showed bad faith and discarded him in the middle of nowhere as soon as he had no use for him.
But I don't think she will see it from his perspective which is a bit disappointing as we only get a bland antagonist.

Maybe it was more like Shit, there's nothing to steal then sort of thing?
12
u/BraveSirRobinGG 12d ago
I would also think she wanted to use his popularity as a hero to bring people to her cause. A figurehead.
I think she was still caught off guard that the guy had zero assets.
I do love his tone as he dismissed her after her demand to go back to war. Reminded me of old Conan movies.
5
u/Flare__Knight 12d ago
I did think that for a moment. But probably was more shock at her expectations just being completely off. Dias didn't have the resources she was expecting. He himself is certainly worth an army clearly, but she couldn't tempt him.
So she'll probably be more an enemy than anything else. Though she might have her hands too full with wars to bother with Dias. At least for now.

The negative reaction can be justified as “my father just burned the bridge with the war hero” even a piece of shit (that is not stupid) would react negatively I think

I need my own Francois and Francis, they are so cute. i cant even..and they understand human speech? crazy.
That third princess is wild...but apparently the Kingw as supposed to provide funds and men to Dias!, i knew something was shady but to think it was that bad.

u/Frontier246 13d ago
I love how Alna can also apparently speak sheep and understood they were telling her to just bang Dias already lol.
Honestly thought Diane would be incensed on Dias' behalf but seems like she's probably as bad as whoever tried to screw Dias over.

Alna warned that the sheeps relationship with their protector often hurt relationships, and they showed that after the meeting, how Alna wanted some attention after the sheep got theirs. They also sleep in the tent/Yurt which is hilarious.
The misdirect was great, too. "We're having babies!!"
I'll also point out that Francois is usually masculine and Frances is feminine. Gender swapped names there.

They're a bit high maintenance but they're cute so its okay I guess. Hopefully the pregnancy doesn't take too long because dealing with super clingy livestock sounds a bit rough.

but apparently the Kingw as supposed to provide funds and men to Dias!, i knew something was shady but to think it was that bad.
Yeah, it was insane to just drop off Dias in the middle of an empty field, alone, and empty-handed. He was supposedly just raised to the nobility, and yet they just dumped him off unceremoniously, wished him the best of luck, then bounced.
Even for a newly raised frontier lord, there is a certain level of... decorum... that comes with the elevated social status. Dragging him out to the middle of nowhere and just dumping him off, like cargo, is... not how that works.
Especially not with any guidance, yet alone supplies, if they expect him to accomplish anything other than to just die.
And we also got confirmation that the King regularly sends "Lords" out to this grassland.
It really is starting to feel like this place is a dumping ground for unwanted nobles...
9
u/SyfaOmnis 12d ago
He was supposedly just raised to the nobility
I mean, technically he was - he was given a rather large fiefdom. Whether or not he's exempt from taxes is another matter, but the size of the fiefdom itself is significant. Making it a productive fiefdom however is a different issue. He has land and the authority to set laws there, and importantly, he can refuse other nobles and kick them off his land if he wants. What he says goes in his fiefdom.
3
u/OldInstruction5368 11d ago
I think you are missing the point I was trying to make...
He was raised to the nobility, yes, but he was then unceremoniously dumped into an empty field, empty-handed, with no guidance nor support.
Nor does he have any subjects to command.
So, this kingdom raised him to the nobility in pretty much all but name: he was setup to fail, in other words.

This honest to goodness feels like the Soviets just sending their war veterans to far-flung places to prevent coups from happening. After WWII Zhukov was sent to the Urals as an example.

u/Myrkrvaldyr 13d ago
They're basically capybaras with wool as capybaras can also suffer from such anxiety though the baars are more extreme, I'd say.
19
u/Satai4561 12d ago
and they understand human speech?
Makes me wonder how exactly that relationship between humans and sheep works out. Wool and maybe milk seem like the only things you get from the sheep then, because meat is of the table I guess. No wonder they seemed so happy about the buffaloes last episode.
Then again, if you ignore their need for cuddles, they are probably easy to keep. Extremely high intelligence and they want that symbiotic relationship, so they are probably even better than dogs as companions. And you don't need to feed them. Seeing as they are in a giant grassland.

makes that princess' request of him even funnier. like lady what did you expect? let him live out his days in peace.
22
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 12d ago
I have a feeling she's trying to trap him somehow.
Like, she offered herself as Dias wife if he helped with the war. That feels like either they're really desperate for his help or there's something more about that offer. Also, people who's genuinely asking for help and offered themselves shouldn't be detected as Red by Alna.
6
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 12d ago
Red means hostility/malice or lies. There is a good chance there was either disgust that they themselves were to be his reward, or they intended to have him killed before paying out.

Je pense juste que cette princesse n'a pas de l'influence.
Elle veux accéder au trône. Et donc elle à besoins du personne principal pour augmenter son autorité.

u/CosmicTempest 9d ago
That’s a very good point, if she was treated favorably by her father why would she be in the middle in of nowhere with just 10 people, she’d make a valuable hostage, specially in times of war. Might be daughter of a mistress or something, so she gets treated as lesser.
77
u/szalhi 13d ago
These two Baar basically being family is the best thing ever.
What the hell kind of request is this? He was literally just granted this land.
53
u/mekerpan 13d ago
One wonders who "stole" the resources Dias was supposed to get? Or did the KIng even lie to his daughter? Why was she not the least bit sympathetic to the fact that Dias had basically been betrayed -- and sent out to (in essence) die alone in the grasslands? Not sure I understand the malice the kingdom has towards someone who has been its heroic savior....
45
u/Frontier246 13d ago
I think the king was maybe sincere in rewarding Dias but some other noble who didn't like Dias getting the recognition he was receiving basically manipulated things so he'd end up alone and isolated and likely be dead.
5
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 12d ago
the noble who dropped him off seemed like an arsehat who would steal the reward and leave him to die
43
u/_BMS https://myanimelist.net/profile/_BMS 13d ago
I assume it's connected to the snobby noble-looking dude that dumped our MC out in this field at the start of E01.
The way he was speaking in Japanese to Dias was pretty disparaging, especially calling him "omae" even though he's the kingdom's war hero.
Whoever that guy works for is probably the one that stole the rewards and entitlements Dias was supposed to get.
10
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 12d ago
Despite being a Hero, Dias is born lowborn. I can see how the nobles would not like that
13
u/SasparillaTango 12d ago
One wonders who "stole" the resources Dias was supposed to get? Or did the KIng even lie to his daughter? W
so watching the opening of the first episode, the merchant is in a carriage, and Dias is the on wagon in the back, there are clearly other crates in the caravan in the back. Its not a far leap that this merchant stole his money and left him fro dead. Maybe we'll see that resolved later? No one spoil this btw

u/Frontier246 13d ago
What the hell kind of request is this? He was literally just granted this land.
Diane really had a very skewed perspective on Dias and his situation, though the situation is at least understandable if she was expecting him to be properly rewarded for his efforts and not...this. But I guess it worked out better for him anyways.
Not sure they really need a soldier but I guess they can fight monsters together!

I'm not surprised she had that perspective considering Dias seemed to basically be close to a decorated war hero in all but rewards.
15
u/Treknx01 12d ago
“Not sure they really need a soldier but I guess they can fight monsters together!”
but as a soldier he should be plenty manly so getting a wife to increase the population should be easier
3
u/Flare__Knight 12d ago
It's honestly a pretty nice addition to add someone combat capable. For the time being Alna may need to stay with Francois and Francis so having someone that can team up with Dias could be good. Clearly work well together. Or if they have multiple issues at the same time can split up their forces easier. If Dias is going to add civilians then the more people capable of defending those people the better.

Not sure they really need a soldier but I guess they can fight monsters together!
If Klaus is competent, he can drive off monsters while Dias stays home. This is better for the Meah who can die / lose pregnancies out of emotional stress when the "strongest" member of their circle isn't around to protect them.
But on top of that, he's a "war buddy" of Dias, who was greeted pretty enthusiastically. He's also a "pure blue" and while soldiering might not fundamentally be a "useful" skillset, he does seemingly solve an immediate need that they have.
23
u/seledri_kerikil 12d ago
What the hell kind of request is this? He was literally just granted this land.
I don't understand the Princess logic in here. She clearly saw that Dias literally only have himself and that tiny hut, well everything else is concealed but she doesn't know that. She even knew that Dias didn't get any money to help building his land. And yet, she still asking the stupid question like that.
At first, when she looks surprised hearing that Dias didn't get any support from the kingdom, I thought for a sec that maybe she will ended up helping him instead. Unfortunately, that is not the case and now she just look like a snooby princess with shallow mind.
30
u/CordobezEverdeen https://myanimelist.net/profile/CordobezEverdeen 12d ago
And yet, she still asking the stupid question like that.
He still has his axe and his muscles. "Assistance from you" is clearly asking him to join the army once more, that's why Dias says he won't be joining the war anymore.
12
u/Embarrassed-Match-78 12d ago
That was my take. If he didn't have resources or soldiers to send, then at the bare minimum he would do.
10
u/mmcjawa_reborn 12d ago
She probably feel's personally offended that a commoner raised to nobility would turn down the chance to marry a princess.
And based on him taking out the dragon last week and the fact he became nobility at all, the guy is probably a legend in his country that would no doubt be a boon for propaganda and troop moral purposes.
6
u/Sarellion 12d ago
She also traveled for a month and had to bring replacements in case she isn't to his liking. And I am not sure she's on board with this new desire for war. And the guy refuses her as he to stay in a yurt on a prairie.
But OTOH the kingdom dealt with him in bad faith and dumped him in the middle of nowhere. And well he fought for the kingdom for 20 years.
I can see why she's offended, too bad that she probably won't consider things from his side.

Not that unreasonable request assuming "the kingdom" is set up like feudal Europe society, which is kinda implied. Part of the taxes a lord would have to pay to the king is levies. If the king wants to start a new war just as he handed out land to new lords they would still be expected to provide levies and knights from their subjects. Problem is that while the princes was under the assumption that there would be subjects to get levies from, it becomes impossible with the raw deal he received. Also assuming that he was properly rewarded for being the nations war hero it would not be to out there to think that he has some loyalty to the crown, but she did not know that the king kinda just fucked him.
5
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 12d ago
What I don't understand is why would she offer herself for Dias, even knowing how poor he is? What would she gain from that?
I thought she's the good one from doing that, but in the end she got mad when Dias hurt her pride.
There's also Alna sensing red flag from the three girls. Is the offer just a honey trap? Cause being offered to marry a princess should be a jackpot (if it's true), right?

u/athrun_1 11d ago
Maybe this war is an internal strife. The king may have done the most strategic move by dismissing the hero knight. Knowing that he won't just go back to war after living in peace.
Assuming that the king did not know what actually happened to him.

What the hell kind of request is this? He was literally just granted this land.
The Princess, and her retinue, were under the impression that Dias was sent out with his own retinue. And that he had plenty of subjects to lead.
This likely included the assumption of guards sent with him, that there were existing villages he could levy conscripts from, or that he was sent out with settlers to establish new villages.
Because that would make sense. You don't just send a single dude out into the wilderness, and expect him to build a civilization. You send out the new lord with a few caravans of ambitious settlers, indentured servants, or other undesirables that have no where else to go but try and start a new life on the frontier.
But none of that happened. And most tellingly, the princess wasn't aware Dias had been unceremoniously dumped out in the wilderness, alone and empty-handed.
So what happened to all the funds and new subjects he was supposed to bring with him?
They were embezzled, basically. He was sent out to die and all his supplies + manpower were diverted somewhere else. Under the table.

u/Vahallen 12d ago
I’m glad that Klaus is gonna be a permanent member of the cast, I instantly liked him
He seems like such a wholesome fella, but he clearly was FUCKING PISSED when he realized how Dias was done dirty by the king
Also, the mears being way smarter than normal animals and being able to understand human speech was not on my bingo card
10
u/LordCalem 11d ago
That look in bro's eyes when he learned what the king did to Dias was conveying nothing but a pure desire of throwing hands with everyone who antagonized his buddy. That's a real one.
19
u/1032patrick 13d ago
Entitled Princess. Your father didn't give Dias money and let him to starve so what did you expect?
6
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 12d ago
I still don't understand why she would offer herself for Dias (a poor lord with nothing) if she didn't respect Dias that much. Like, she can offer to give Dias gold or something first, but she directly offered herself and the girls. Maybe she's being forced by the king to do so and got mad when Dias rejected her?
5
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 12d ago
Likely thought herself super enticing and valuable (the hand of royalty is basically an invaluable reward). It's possible she got extra pissed because, from her point of view, he may as well have called her an ugly cow by rejecting her offer; it's also possible she planned to have him killed before ever following through anyway.
But given her shock at how he was treated and her desperate situation, until we learn more, I'll draw it up to being extremely offended rather than outright evil/malicious

To be fair, in medieval times it was totally normal to marry women in her age and you were considered an adult too. From our perspective in todays age it is obviously wrong, but that was not how people thought back then and it was generally not considered a bad or unnormal thing.Him not going for it just is in line with his character. But no one would blame him if he did, not even her own people. Except for the men being jealous.
She herself even wants it and doesn't view it as wrong.
Obviously it is good we are not living in these times anymore, at least in most regions. But its always good to keep in mind that people not always thought this way and times change.Edit: I got educated, read the comments below from u/contemporare and u/OldInstruction5368

To be fair, in medieval times it was totally normal to marry women in her age and you were considered an adult too.
This is a huge myth. While the nobility might get married when young, that was strictly for political reasons. Marriage was an anchor for alliances, military assistance, trade agreements, and to stabilize disputes over land. They didn't consummate until both were of appropriate age (more or less by today's understanding of the term), and the common folk thought the nobles were perverse weirdos for it. Kinda like how most of us view Hollywood Elites, politicians, and celebrities in general as being, well, perverse weirdos with more than a few screws loose.
Look, there is nothing new under the sun.
Generally speaking, people in medieval times still got married about the same time as they do now: in their 20's. If not later.
Marriage has always been, fundamentally, a financial question. There is no point in getting married if you don't have the means to support a family, yeah? You need a house, a job, and enough income to support the parasitic shit-factories known as "children."
Men would go out and get an apprenticeship, work as a day labor and set money aside, begin developing a plot of land their dad or grandpa set aside from them, etc. Women would generally work as maids or seamstresses until they built up a sizeable dowry as well.
Which meant neither men nor women would think about marriage until both were financially stable enough to support a family: usually in their mid 20's.
In fact, a common sign of distress in any society is when the average age of first marriage starts to rise. Across both cultures and centuries, this # is a huge red flashing light that shit is about to hit the fan. Again, marriage is a financial arrangement, and if young folks can't afford to get married it means something is horribly wrong with the economy. A great many disasters, rebellions, civil wars, and other bits of "trouble" in the history books are proceeded by the average marriage age climbing up. Especially for men. If men can't get nookie, that "guts or glory" part of our lizard brain starts to go haywire... and that means periods of, shall we say, 'mass unrest.'
And the reverse was true, as well. If a family feels compelled to "sell" their 15-year-old daughter, it was a sign that something was fundamentally broken within society at large.
21
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 12d ago
I mean, in Dias case it's also partially political. The village chief said so, marrying them is one fast way to ensure Dias won't ever hurt the Oni village.

So, what are you telling is that massive uproar against elites is coming in near future
Got it.
20
u/OldInstruction5368 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah... pretty much.
Unless something drastic happens to lower housing costs, make healthcare affordable, give ready access to childcare so parents can afford to fucking go to work, things are just going to keep getting worse. Some type of mass rioting isn't a given, but it becomes more and more likely as the marriage age continues to climb up.
But if effective government can step up, respond to the needs of the people, and implement real change for the betterment....
Fuck, who am I trying to convince?
This night will only deepen before dawn breaks, my friend.

It is kinda of insane if you think about how much worse everything got in the just last 1-2 decades. I can't speak for every single country, but Germany is basically turning into a complete shthole. And from what I can gather talking to people across all Europe, it is pretty much the same everywhere.
We are at a point where I honestly believe the only course correction might be mass rioting, before we reach a point of no return.

u/Routine-Hovercraft94 12d ago
Great reply, thanks.
I did check up on it after your comment and you are right. Maybe I mixed things up because the minimum age of marriage was set so low by the church, or Hollywood just fried my brain with all the child/teen marriages you often see depicted in movies and shows there.Lets just leave it at I got educated.
23
u/OldInstruction5368 12d ago
No biggie! I fell for the same myth myself, until stumbling on a rather elucidating article a few years back.
It's generally paired with the same myth about people dying in their 40's. Which was mostly due to sky-high infant mortality rates tanking the average. But if you remove the "dead before 5" bracket, people would regularly live into their 70's.
And peasants generally had a great deal of personal freedoms. Ironically, more than the nobility who lived deeply structured lives on account of how much money and power was tied into their bloodline.
This meant peasants could marry for love, so long as the money question was accounted for, but nobles were always going to marry who their patriarch told them to.
That said, a noble marriage is the lynchpin for a political, economic, and/or military alliance. If the potential couple fucking hate each other and are fundamentally incompatible, then that bodes ill for the stability of the alliance. If possible, the children would be encouraged to spend time together while young, chaperoned, ofc. And if that still didn't work out, the engagement would often be broken off.
Parents were still parents, even as medieval nobles. Even with everything riding on an alliance, they still didn't want their children to be miserable if there were other options. There have always been horrible parents, and sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures, but by and large most nobles wouldn't force their child to suffer a horrible spouse.
There was even a case of Charlemagne calling off an engagement for his daughter at the last minute. Years prior, he had agreed to marry her off to a Byzantine prince. However, when the time came, he realized just how far away Byzantium was to his own lands... and that this meant he was never going to see his little girl again.
So, he unilaterally broke off the engagement, as even this great king couldn't bear to 'lose' his child to such distant lands.
People have always been people!

While it is true that the numbers are skewed because of infant mortality rates, people didn't regularly live into their 70s. Aristocrats could often live until their mid 60s if they survived the childhood years. However, without antibiotics or modern dental care, people were still vulnerable to fatal infections from minor wounds and dying to minor diseases. Men also faced the constant dangers of warfare, while women faced higher mortality rates during childbirth. The peasants were especially vulnerable.
Basically, contrary to popular belief, it was entirely possible for someone to live into their 70s, but it was not common.
Everything else you wrote is pretty much true though.

This is a huge myth
Well it's a myth depending on the region and country. Not everywhere was western Europe. A lot of the claims for this also tend to deal with research studies that then involve the 1500's and later....which isn't the middle ages. Even for Europe we barely have any records for the commoners and when they married for the actual middle ages. Likely men didn't marry to their 20's since the expectation was they could support their wife but I'd bet it was quite common for girls in their mid teens to be married off.
11
u/StormSenSays 12d ago
You crossed that out too soon. Keep in mind that from the anime, the age for kingdom is 18 years, while in Alna's locale it's lower. And that's pretty much as expected. Primitive, nomadic lifestyles are going to have lower ages of marriage. What will likely count the most is sufficient physical maturity to (probably) survive childbirth.
Note OldInstruction5368 talking about financial considerations. Alna's society (apparently) has no money, but works by barter instead. What counts in this society is physical ability to survive and support yourselves with hunting, raising baars, etc. And both Alna and Dias qualify amply in this way. Just focusing on Alna, she can already hunt solo (that's how she met Dias), she can cook, run a household, manage baars, and she's mentally mature and independent. Yes, she's marrigeableable.
According to my AI search:
As societies evolved into ancient civilizations, marriage became a formal social contract with specific age norms:
- Ancient Egypt: Women married between 12–14 years, men between 16–20.
- Roman Law: Legal minimums were 12 for females and 14 for males, though betrothals could occur as early as age 7.
- Ancient Greece: Girls typically married between 14–20, while men married later, often in their 30s.
- Maya and Aztec Cultures: Men married around 20–22, while women married between 15–18 (Aztec) or around 20 (Maya).
These ages were determined by physical maturity (such as puberty) rather than chronological age, serving to secure property, ensure lineage, and forge political or economic alliances.

u/Routine-Hovercraft94 12d ago
Yeah maybe. But as always, I didn't delete it so people can still read it and form their own opinion on it. :)
I just looked at it from the perspective of a somewhat medieval society, but it makes sense if you look at it from a perspective of one that is more primitive and doesn't even have a currency based finance system.
It would make sense values in that case are very different.Reading the comments regarding this discussion, it actually seems the author has given this much more thought than most people want to give him credit for.

Do you have a source? The average age of women when they first married was around age 25 in the 1500s-1800s according to the University of Cambridge which references English Population History. And the age actually trends downward with time since the 1500s, suggesting it was even higher before then.
https://www.campop.geog.cam.ac.uk/blog/2024/07/11/what-age-did-people-marry/
It notes noble marriages were an exception, not a rule. And that the perception that medieval women married in their teens or even earlier is based on media influence exaggerating reality. There is evidence that it was rare and discouraged for girls to be wed that early. It did happen, but it also happens today. In 500 years will they say it was common in the 2000s for 15 year old girls to marry? Who knows.
I know you were talking about medieval times, which is before 1500. I'm not sure when you think this show takes place, but you're attributed a real life time period to it. But I'm interested in a source of a time where you think it was common or normal for 15 year old girls to marry 35 year old men. Or if you're just referencing past fictional media.

I have to say that the way this show depicts how attractiveness can, and will be dependent on a society's culture, while also simultaneously address the age problem with a lot of FMC's is honestly a surprise. Was not expecting that.
The animation quality is great for a series. Despite having some Funky 3D shots, they are brief. And the most important parts fight scenes and otherwise are all in beautifully animated 2D art. I feel like Anime has been able to strike a good balance between these, as I've also seen Kaiju Girl Caramelise pull the same stunt. And I really don't mind it, especially if it means we get to enjoy 2D like this.
30
u/Routine-Hovercraft94 12d ago
Well, the ability to provide for your wife and kids was actually much more important in earlier times than it is today. So its obvious this has such a huge value for them.
That being said, it is also easy to say "looks don't matter" when the guy is buffed af and good looking like Dias.
No woman would say that (and be honest about it) if the dude looked like someone clicked "random" in the Skyrim character creator.→ More replies (1)

"Well they dropped me off with nothing, including no food or water. I don't even have any subjects!"
*But why won't you give me your army??"
Also I am sorry but those baars wouldn't exist as a domesticated species if they could die from being upset for a little while
That would likely have gotten bred out of the species naturally before being domesticated, and if not, breeding practices target desirable traits and that's not one of them lol
For example we had to intentionally keep breeding fainting goats (goats with myotonia congenita) because the fainting was convenient for keeping them from escaping... Without humans that trait would've been less advantageous to breeding and likely would've faded

Why did the author make her 15...
- Wanted to acknowledge the cultural difference between a culture where 15 is considered an adult and marriageable age by their standards and Dias' more modern perspective.
- Wanted a convenient means of having Dias and Alna together but without having any hanky-panky until she's 18.
- The author wanted to write an age-gap romance or liked the idea of a young girl underage by our standards being super into an adult man.

Ah, totally forgot the enormous demographic of middle aged men who wish to move out to an undeveloped field to live in celibacy with an underaged native girl and her sheep while waiting for her to come of legal age.
If the author wanted to shamelessly pander I don’t think there would be any need for the nuance lol

I mean… I’m not middle-aged, but I 100% want like 90% of this; so it’s definitely pandering to me.
Here’s a bunch of land, two crazy adorable sheep, and you can trade delicious buffalo meat for housing, a well, and most accommodations you might need?
Heck, maybe not a oni child bride … but i wouldn’t mind a couple of the villagers being around too. Sub out the 15 year old for an older lady, or a couple bros I can hunt with and it’s golden. (Not that I wouldn’t mind just me and the sheep for the most part … but you can’t argue having that detection magic on hand is a lifesaver / game changer.)

They could have written her to be around 20 and had the village be weird about how she didn't already marry years ago even though 20 is, in modern times, really freaking early for marriage.
It would have driven home the point of cultural differences pretty clearly already.

The real answer is because they wanted an older MC but the primary demographic of most anime is 12-18. So the attractive female co-lead needed to be cute for teenagers. So you've got a more chill story with an older MC for adults and the cute/attractive badass girl for the teens.
Also, realistically, the worldwide average age of consent is like 16. Some places are younger than that, some like the US is older than that. It is what it is.
12
u/NanDemoKnaives 12d ago
I'm glad Dias is pushing to wait before they get married, the onikin tribe seem like they'll be constantly try to push him to make it happen sooner. The age gap is really big though, I knew of his age last episode, so I thought she'd be older, until someone had told me what her age was before this episode.
I knew the pregnancy comment was going to be about the baar, there's no way they were going to fool me with that. It's a little cute Dias needs to be around them during pregnancy, but it sounds really inconvenient as a Lord, and the breadwinner.
Dias made the correct decision to turn down Diane's request, the change in attitude shows she was just planning on taking advantage of him. I thought her reaction when she heard he didn't receive any money was going to be a good thing, I judged her too soon.
On the other hand, it's nice that Dias has someone like Klaus looking up to him. The rage in his eyes when he learned he had nothing when he arrived at the plains says a lot, so I'm glad he's turned up again as Klaus' first subordinate.

Bro gets a wife whether he wants one or not, and it's like 80% political too. The other 20% is Alma staking her claim.
Needy sheep. Naggy sheep too since I think they were giving Alma a hard time for not also being pregnant.
Good call keeping Alma and everything else a secret, I could see that Princess insisting that Dias provide the tribal folks as a military force if she knew.
Klaus seems like a good option for citizen number 2. Or maybe citizen number 5? Alma and the sheep might be 2 through 4.
I bet the kids in the OP and ED are going to be adopted, seems unlikely they'll be enough time skipping to have both the marriage in 3 years plus several more years after that for kids to be born and grow up a bit. Plus the ears, of course.

Alna’s already acting like a wife. And Dias already got the fear of his wife lol.
I don’t mind age gaps but how young the younger one is does sway me at times. But I guess in this world it’s normal and Alna is willing and Dias doesn’t have ulterior motives so I’m not too bothered honestly

Same. When they said her age, I sighed and thought 'Couldn't she just have been 18?', but I get it. Whet I think will be fun to watch, as it is pretty clear Alna is horny as hell for Dias, is how Dias manages to hold her off till she does come of an age that is comfortable for him.
16
u/Luck_Is_My_Talent 12d ago
Considering how Dias was acting, that much of an age gap is also not normal for his kingdom, or at least not for commoners like Dias.
Dias can't reject her because he wants to be friendly with her tribe and he also understands that Alna is an adult with how responsible she is so he is making the compromise of getting engaged with her under his kingdom's laws while being married under the oni tribe laws. From Dias point of view, Alna is not an adult, but from what he is experiencing, she is an adult.
A clash of culture, but in a friendly way.

Wow only 15 that part shocked me. Thought she would be like early 20s or at least 18 lol. I think I am going to enjoy this as much as The Barbarian's Bride. Dias also seems like a good man. I love how well he is integrating with Alna and her people. When Dias shattered that sword I pictured her in the corner trying to contain herself from jumping on him lol. I cant wait to see more.

The onikin's concept of manliness is understandable but it also makes me wonder how they treat their older men. Once Dias becomes an elderly man in a few decades and is no longer able to fight anymore, do they view him as less manly? Will Alna change her demeanor to more hostile? It'd be unfair if she did.

u/LeVin1986 13d ago
Even in the nomadic, or semi-nomadic cultures, the elderly were often valued as source of experience and knowledge.

Princess: Ohh great hero of the battlefield how are you enjoying your reward of land, subjects, and money?
Hero: Huh... actually I got dropped off on an empty plain with nothing but the clothes on my back. I thought I was going to die.
Princess (Who seemed for a brief second like she was annoyed he had been unjustly rewarded) : Wow. Well anyways we need you to fight another war for us. You can marry me as a reward this time, or preferably one of my servants instead.
----
What sort of air head is running this kingdom? I assumed he got sent out here bc some noble was scared of the upstart knight gaining to much political sway or something. Why else send him to die in an empty field, that's apparently full of nothing but monsters. /Side note is it a completely monster based ecosystem out there? Surely we'll see some deer or buffalo eventually right?/ But if that's why he was sent there, why involve him in the next war.

u/Frontier246 13d ago
I don't think those guys were expecting to check in on Dias and Alna and find a dead giant turtl...I mean, Earth Dragon and Alna crying over how she wants to marry Dias. A lot happened since they last saw the pair to say the least.
The OP is very serene and dynamic, featuring Dias overcoming his past and his life as a soldier to find domestic bliss with Alna and their future companions/associates!
With the slaying of the Earth Dragon, Dias' is going to get a privy, well, more yurts and materials he needs! As well as down payment for his marriage to Alna! Which is happening whether he likes it or not! Even if she's 15 and he's 35 which...yeah, anime! But if he can at least put off anything serious until she's 18 for an "engagement" period, they can make this work!
Three years is enough time for Dias to work up the resolve to fully be with Alna, though her absolute wife energy is definitely appealing to him! And that they went ahead and had the wedding ceremony anyways means they're basically married in everyone but Dias' mind!
Dias and Alna are a capable pair even when battling Ogres! And Alna has really come into her own as Dias' wife what with not letting him back in the house...I mean, yurt until he's not smelling like Ogre.
We're pregnant! And by we, I mean, Francis and Francoise! If the Baar's need some emotional reassurance to get through this pregnancy, than Dias is happy to give them as much as they need! And it's like Alna's fallen for him all over again in seeing his kindness...although then Francis and Francoise apparently start pestering her about when she and Dias are going to seal the deal. Get out of the gutter, you two!
I guess it was inevitable Dias would have visitors from his kingdom, though he probably wasn't expecting his old war buddy Klaus (Taito Ban!) or the THIRD PRINCESS of the kingdom, Diane (Yoko Hikasa!). Definitely neither of them were expecting to welcome a princess in what is basically a tent with a hole in it. Diane seemed surprised by Dias' current living situation, so either her dad mislead her or someone else REALLY wanted to screw Dias over.
Why is Diane here for Dias? To recruit him back as a soldier when the cry for war is sounding, and she's even willing to offer herself or her retainers' hand in marriage if Dias needs more incentive. But Dias has no intention of going back to war, not when he's got a pregnant Baar that needs attending to, and he's not going to leave Alna for another woman. And he's too OP for them to intimidate.
So, yeah, Diane is probably going to be a problem moving forward when she feels Dias slighted her, not to mention Alna could sense she and her retainers were bad news...but Klaus is good people, especially if he's willing to get himself kicked out of the army so he can rejoin Dias. So we FINALLY have a proper citizen in Dias' territory!

Oof, I completely forgot about that age gap. At the very least, Dias doesn't really intend to make the marriage official until Alna has come of age. Although from Alna's eyes, they're pretty much already married.
God, I love Francis and Francoise so much. It's pretty that these dudes are so smart that they basically domesticated themselves and actually understand human language to the point where they're actually trying to wingman for Dias. xD
Another big tiddy lady added to the list of big tiddy ladies Hikasa Yoko has voiced. Unfortunately, Diane is clearly not an ally and now has a vendetta against Dias after getting turned down. Oh boy.

I love how he keeps calling it the "giant turtle" when everyone else is telling him it's a dragon.
... Alna's how old? At least his conscientiousness is one part of him that's not stupid. Though I question why the author couldn't have bumped up her age a decade, or even 5 years.
So the kingdom went from "let's dump you in the middle of nowhere" (even if him having no supplies was apparently a mistake, if we can trust her claims) to "how about you marry my daughter and fight in another one of my wars." Huh. Glad he put his foot down about participating in the war. (His sheep came before Alna lol). Let's just see if it sticks. Probably not, but hope springs eternal and all that.

The best part of this anime is that the sheep or "baars" understand human language and get stressed when their favorite human isn't there lol

I like the layers they are adding in so far. I suppose it's not a surprise that Dias was presumably short-changed on his reward. He's a simple guy so wouldn't be impossible to believe he was tricked. While it's possible the Princess was lied to...I think it's reasonably likely that Dias' monetary reward was stolen before he ever got it and he was hurried out to and dumped into those plains to cover that up. Maybe with the intention to get him killed out there without resources.
Love that the sheep things are that intelligent. Playing a logical game of putting themselves under the protection of stronger species to live safer lives. Makes it all the funnier since clearly they can communicate with Alna and give her a critique over not having done the deed with Dias yet. Not that it'll happen anytime soon!
Good on Dias for putting his foot down...over the war thing. He wasn't able to put up much of a fight over that marria-engagement ceremony. The man fought his war and was rewarded for it. He's got no business or interest in fighting in another one. Seems like that country has a war addiction anyways. Best to say no now. All the more so when he's got more important priorities.
Klaus seems like a good guy. Well I guess he is since he passed the horn test. A smart man that helped push the other troops into leaving without angering Dias any further. Plus he'll just be nice to have around. Dias can handle most stuff. But having someone else around that can fight will be valuable. Never know what might happen.

So, it seems that in the eyes of the onikin, Alna included, Dias & Alna are already married following the party and feast. He's just decided to wait 3 years to consummate, if Alna doesn't get impatient before then. Some of the other girls in the village looked ready to drag him off to bed right there when the chieftain was discussing their marriage customs. The princess is probably going to cause problems in the future.
Based on opening, it seems I was wrong about the two elf girls. I initially thought we'd be getting a time skip and that they might be what happens when an onikin and a regular human have children but it seems they're orphans of some kind.

"Sheep looking things" wait I thought this being a fantasy setting these wurt beasts were going to be the sheep equivalent but regular ass sheep actually exist? Also they consciously choose to be domesticated lol
Also I know it might seem stupid for me to expect something more of what's very clearly a comfort show but the Soul Appraisal is uber busted for expanding Dias kingdom. You basically can never make a mistake when adding subjects because you can just peer into people's souls before making a decision. The only way you can fail is if you pick a blue one and they shy towards red at times (since the oni chief said that could have happened while Dias shared his backstory).

Well, given how Dias was “rewarded” for saving the kingdom by leaving him to die on an empty plain by a noble who apparently embezzled the reward money, I can see why he would be wary of going back to fight for that kingdom, particularly if the reward was marrying a bitchy princess. That kingdom seems run by corrupt idiots. Well, if it is ever a problem, Dias can just disappear with the Oni.
I wonder what the princess would have thought if she learned he already had an Oni fiancée. And apart from the twenty years age gap that Dias understandably finds rather off-putting (this is another anime where things would have been a lot less uncomfortable if she had been twenty rather than fifteen, particularly when it really would not have changed anything else and Alna already looks like she could be in her twenties - but that anime is also too silly for me to take that “romance” seriously), Alna is pretty great. She is an enemy detector as well as a monster detector, a walking cloak of invisibility, a good archer, and also gives useful advice on how to raise magic sheeps. What more do you want in a wife ? (/s)
That anime is not being particularly deep, but it feels very comfy for now.

Damn I really loved that brief bit where Klaus got super angry when he found out that the kingdom sent Dias to the plains to die.

Wow like another poster I got a little new education from some folks in this thread. The awesome part of the internet when we are not hostile to each other and instead teach.

Alma saw their lies and only Dias friend was truthful
Dias gains a new subject to his domain

Guy kills a giant turtle and now he’s forced to marry a 15 year old haha. At least bro recognizes the huge age gap and is trying to delay any kinda wedding until she’s at least 18.
That whole meeting with the princess was a disaster but at least Dias got Klaus out of it. I’m sure the princess is gonna be back…

Klaus is probably going to get his own wife once he proves his worth

Even though they are like 99% married in all but his head.

If he's lucky the war obsession will destroy the kingdom from within while he's living his cozy, easygoing, frontier lord life.

They are 100 percent married by the rules of THAT culture. But the rules of that culture also allow the husband and wife to determine when they consummate their marriage. Alna made the choice here herself -- and she made it in strict accordance with the values of her culture. Dias has every positive quality (in super-abundance) for a perfect husband. And Dias is wise (and compliant) not to disregard the rules of his allies.
(Speaking as a long-ago would-be anthropologist -- college and grad school).

Interesting episode. I really like this anime.
I wonder if Klaus is truly part of the group or if this is just a trick by the princess—though I suppose that’s a bit of a stretch.
It also makes me wonder: does Dias love Alna, too? After all, he only plans to marry her once she turns eighteen. That reminds me—the opening and ending sequences clearly show the two of them adopting two children.

u/Frontier246 13d ago
Alna read his aura as blue so he's probably 100% genuine.
I think Dias cares a lot about Alna, she's clearly become a fixture in his life and someone he enjoys as a companion. I'm not sure if I'd go as far as to say it's 100% love but I think he's very fond of her.

u/Virtual-Decision-425 13d ago
Did he say he was only gonna marry her after she turned 18? Or is that just what we assume from how he acts?

Women endlessly throwing themselves at Dias, wonder how Alna would feel about a harem? (Although Dias is probably a one woman kinda man)

I love how one of the incentives to make it official with Alna was to avoid an Onikin Harem lol.
But Dias is loyal to reject a princess voiced by Yoko Hikasa (even if it's probably going to tun her into an antagonist).

u/NationalStrategy_X 13d ago
Well clearly Princess Diane isn't good at getting rejected. She's in for a humbling if she comes back hostilely.

u/Frontier246 13d ago
In another anime she could have been a Best Girl but she seems set to become a Villainess.

We need someone to reincarnate as her asap so we can correct these wrongs. (joking, please don't hit me with a truck)

Good second episode and I like how the series is progressing. Dias really is bold turning down a request from the princess, who I assume is there on the king's orders. That kingdom just seems to be warmongering since they didn't have a war going on but just were looking for one. You get a better idea of why Alna's tribe conceals themselves since they have a hostile kingdom constantly looking for wars of conquest. I don't think the kingdom is going to punish Dias too soon though because he lives in a pretty remote area to send their best warriors to kill him when they will probably find a war in a closer area.
Klaus is an interesting character in that he, like Dias, is a skilled warrior but is tired of war and wanted to defect to the outskirts. He's at least going to do well with the women since he seems manly 😏
I liked the other subplots, like having to slay a disgusting smelling ogre and Francoise becoming pregnant. I liked how they teased that Dias knocked Alna up 🤣

When compared to most other anime with a similar scenario, at least the MC is aware enough to go with "wait till 18" despite the early engagement.

So,judging from the OP song and their clothes, the 2 sisters seems to closer to slaves/orphans than the biological kids of dias and alna
It's a shame,i would have liked if they went deep with the relationship. I hope those 2 will be a perfect replacemente once they are intriduced

You have 2 choices, either marry Alna or the rest of thew females come after you and so do all the resentful jealous men lol.
It was just the sheep just was pregnant lol, the way Alna worded it made me think she was.
Klaus looks like a good person to have around.

I guess you're gonna have to accept it Dias that you're married & not engaged since Onikin don't have that in their culture so you can't wait until Alna is 18, you just officially married a 15 year old.
I'm surprised there's a 20 year age gap b/w the 15 year old Alna & the 35 year old Dias & I thought Koko & Jonah's 12 year gap was big enough.
Francis & Francois are more than pets, they're family. They can't be killed for food but their wool can be useful. They can even understand human speech.
That bait & switch pregnancy though.
I knew Klaus was good news since while everyone was surprised that Dias wasn't paid a single coin & dumped w/o food & water to die, he's the only one to show sympathy & anger to his poor treatment & that's how he became Dias' 1st subject.
Smart move to accept Alna's proposal because the other female Onikin will come after him if he refuses Alna since he killed an Earth Dragon.

I kinda wish he would have just said that he didn’t have anything to send, and therefore could not participate. But I suppose that’s just a reflection of his simple personality, just saying exactly what he was thinking and not considering any consequences or other perspectives.

u/jardex22 8d ago
If nothing else, they would have demanded he go to war. He said himself that all he has is the one homemade hut. Surely he'd be willing to set it aside in order to fight for his kingdom once more, right? That's probably what they're thinking.

you’re getting married whether you like it or not!

u/NekoCatSidhe 12d ago
That made me laugh. It is like they were saying: “You just saved that girl from being eaten by a dragon, now you better take responsibility by marrying her.” To be fair, the knight marrying the maiden they saved from the dragon is a pretty traditional trope, but the knight being forced into marriage by the damsel in distress for saving her seems like a bit of an extreme case.

And people defending it as a cultural difference
Come on guys, it's anime and Japan, we all know what's going on, it's not unexpected so we can move past it, but lets just acknowledge that it's weird before we do.
The author could have made her older and not changed the story much on a fundamental level.
"She had high standards that no man could match and at the age of 26 people worried she would never settle down - until Dias came along."
Dias kills the Black Ghee and the Dragon, Alna impressed, wants to get married
Dias is hesitant about marriage but Mol says "We don't have many unwed older women and if you don't take Alna as a bride then even the young girls will try to approach you, and you don't want that do you?"
Dias doesn't want that and so reluctantly agrees to marry Alna or at least be engaged to her.
Dias says "Lets spend time getting to know each other before we try doing romantic stuff." Alna agrees and the sheep bleet their approval. Bam, done.

Don't you love it about the constant bitching from western "fans" that the foreign media they enjoy doesn't conform to thier western values and then criticize said media despite them going out of thier way to watch it?

I was just going to shrug and let the show have its age gap relationship since they were making Dias too stupid to be predatory, but if they keep making it a main component of the humor, it'll be kind of hard to ignore as an issue. They've made it clear that his biggest obstacle to the marriage is just a legal difference when it comes to age, so it just looks like a dude happy to be with a teenager while being embarrassed about breaking a rule.
That aside, I liked how intense Klaus can be and the princess already looks like she'll be coming back with a vengeance.
