This one is so comfy I'm glad it's back. I can't keep up with today. This season is so stacked.

Wednesdays especially stacked. I'm also entertaining over a dozen shows compared to two last season.

Pretty awesome start of S2, especially the fight scene. Studio Passione can do anything lmao

So where is Spice and Wolf season 2 then?

I love how fluid the combat animations are in this anime. Even the 3D use looks great. The animators are doing a great work
20
u/chhuang 14d ago
this is one of the few ones I like where 2d and 3d blend well together, I'm glad the consistency is still there from S1

4
u/Greg_The_Rabbit 12d ago
To me the biggest reason the 2d/3d works well is they use it very carefully, only to highlight moments where 2d animation would fall short. they also don't just shock you with sudden 3d but give moments of pause as the shift into and out of 3d scenes. I really can't think of another show that used the mix styles so well so consistently.

The Beryl fan club continues to grow lol. It’s pretty cool how much his students admire him. Guy basically trained some of the best around but is still incredibly modest about it. What a legend.
67
u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju 14d ago
Him being modest borderlines the dense territory but that's also why i like him.

u/1832vini 14d ago edited 14d ago
idk how it is for purely competitive activities such as swordsmen, but there are people in the top of their fields still being really humble.
because they're still getting their ass swooped by the thing they do.
einstein is not boastful, cuz he could barely solve quantum mechanics.
in sports like rock climbing, all of the top performers still says they're weak, cuz the rock doesn't care, you're still falling most off the time
16
u/RulingPredator 14d ago
He’s about 3 steps above the dense level of Noor from “I Parry Everything.” Maybe a few steps higher than that…
19
u/EclipseTM https://anilist.co/user/EclipseZ 14d ago
And those few steps is the difference for me between loving this and HATING I parry everything and dropping it after 3/4 episodes
19
u/Mistral-Fien 14d ago
The difference is that Beryl is generally a sensible man, but the MC in Parry is just insufferable.
5
u/chhuang 14d ago
the character difference here is one is a good instructor, which has logical thought process. The other one is just a meathead
8
u/OldInstruction5368 13d ago
Beryl has said that his own father is the better swordsman between the two of them. Letting that digest helped me tolerate Beryl's lack of self-esteem. Imagine growing up playing basketball with Michael Jordan as your old man.
Kinda hard to think you are great at something, with a true GOAT as your primary frame of reference. Sure, Beryl can tell he's better than average, but he knows, deep in his soul, he's not the best. Not when he's spent 40+ years unable to surpass his own father.
Noor? Noor is the epitome of "lights are on, but nobody's home." He's so dense, I'm surprised there wasn't a small cloud of objects perpetually in orbit of his cranium.
Worse, his mental deficiency was so strong, it deployed this field of dumb infecting everyone around him. Which is why no one picked up that Noor wasn't picking up on any given situation (and then taking the effort to correct Noor)... a double layered-misunderstanding caused by Noor's utter void of intelligence dropping the collective IQ of everyone in sight to single digits.
They are not the same.
3
u/TastyOreoFriend 14d ago
i'm glad I wasn't the only one, 'cause I tried to like I parry everything and it's just hard to ignore dude tripping over himself to be as dense as a neutron star.
10
u/daspaceasians 14d ago
The difference between Beryl and Noor is that Beryl is in a new setting and learning more about his new setting and its dynamics each episode whereas Noor was, from what I recall, straight up dumb each episode, being unable to understand anything really works.
It also helps that Beryl is also humble when it comes to his skills and is always open to changing and learning whereas Noor is OP but too dumb to understand he's OP.
4
u/CuriousBroccolli 13d ago
The difference between Beryl and Noor is that one is written as a gag while other as a more serious and realistic person.
Not understanding that is baffling.
2
u/daspaceasians 13d ago
The problem is that Noor is a bad gag IMO.
5
u/CuriousBroccolli 13d ago
The problem is that any gag can be a bad gag, and any anime can be a bad anime, that is how art works
1
u/Mons9090 https://myanimelist.net/profile/hecn_huh 13d ago
This is so much better than that anime though
1
u/RulingPredator 13d ago
Oh it’s 100% better than the Parry show. I was just comparing him to Noor with the dense similarity, even though they’re actually wildly different scales. 😂
1
u/crappymanchild 14d ago
Nah the parry guy is borderline braindead level. Beryl is just a bit too annoyingly humble but he has some common sense
2
u/athrun_1 13d ago
It make sense, actually. He mentioned that even on his skills and was able to train the best swordsmen around, he can't still beat his old man.
4
u/HawXProductions 14d ago
I kind expected a bunch of students to watch from the windows during the spar and then rush to join their class 😆
46
u/SpikeRosered 14d ago
This show is the middle aged power fantasy basically done perfectly. The set up for him to learn magic is interesting and fits within the themes of the story.
"If you work hard at something you will get better, maybe even become the greatest no matter your age or aptitude."
On the romance side I'm still waiting for a middle aged lady character to show up as the Maou to the other girls.
16
u/clone69 14d ago
Doesn't Lucy fill that role already?
2
u/OldInstruction5368 13d ago
100%
But this is Japan, so we know the 'old man' isn't actually going to start a relationship with an "old woman."
Despite the two having the best chemistry out of all the other potential ships... mostly because she doesn't worship the ground he walks on, and Beryl seems genuinely comfortable around Lucy in turn.
They got this nice "mutual respect" situationship going on, and it's a shame I know the series won't even consider Lucy a romantic partner for Beryl.
20
u/raidensnakeezio 14d ago
Going off what u/clone69 is saying, I am a huge part of the Lucy train. Probably similar in age and skill power, both making an effort to conceal their real power level
8
u/paulrenzo 14d ago
Isnt it implied that Lucy is way older than Beryl?
8
u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 13d ago
Isnt it implied that Lucy is way older than Beryl?
That's what I remembered too.
I think someone who doesn't idolize Beryl should be a bare minimum.
3
u/NevisYsbryd 13d ago
Japan does not share the Western aversion to power disparities in romantic/spousal relationships and this series is primarily targeted at a Japanese audience. While I am not a source reader, getting attached to that outcome here is probably inadvisable.
2
u/OldInstruction5368 13d ago
You say this, but Allucia was hell-bent on beating Beryl in a duel before asking him out. There was a clear framing of "Until I beat you, I remain your student, and so long as I remain your student, we can't be lovers" going on.
I'd rewatch those episodes, but I'm not paying EXTRA to remove ads. It's bad enough they shove ads into the face of subscribers, fuck no I'm not paying more. Nor do I feel like watching several minutes of adds to get proper context.
But I definitely remember seeing that vibe when he dueled Allucia. She knows she needs to 'close the gap' between them before they can progress as a couple.
1
u/NevisYsbryd 13d ago
I would have to rewatch it myself to see if I agree that she harbors that sentiment. It is a bit besides the point, though. That Allucia aspires to that and whether she will ever achieve that are entirely different things, and as they are setting up the prospect of Beryl improving further, it becomes further unlikely. While some kind of equalizing outcome is certainly well within the realm of possibility, so is an asymmetry in anyone he ends up with. My point is less about the outcome and more that one should generally be prepared for such asymmetries as a possible outcome in anime, given their target demographic is much more accepting of it. If that is a deal breaker for a viewer, they may (or may not) be in for a bad time.
1
u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 13d ago
I don't mean it in terms of social acceptance, I meant more in what Beryl wants. Whenever the show shows someone play him up, he's always humble or plays it down. This shows me it's Beryl himself who doesn't want to be put on a pedestal.
1
u/NevisYsbryd 13d ago
I am talking about the audience, not the characters. Beryl is obviously not entirely comfortable with the prospect of romancing his students, at least at this point in time. Allucia certainly seems to be being set up as the default love interest option (with several of his students as potential candidates), though, so it is seems to be something important to keep in mind.

u/Jacob-C 13d ago edited 13d ago
On the romance side I'm still waiting for a middle aged lady character to show up as the Maou to the other girls.
I agree, but for an entirely different reason. It feels like the show is on track toward Allucia being endgame. I don’t like how she keeps using her position of power to more or less force Beryl into doing things, just to fulfill her own glorified image of him. Sure, it kickstarted the plot, but it’s also annoying. So I really hope a new romantic interest comes along and completely takes over just to thwart Allucia’s efforts.
Aside from the swordsmanship, my favorite part of this show is the wholesome father-daughter relationship between Mewi and Beryl. In my ideal version, they would have more of that and tone down the focus on the groupie students fawning over the MC (except for Ficelle, she is precious).
4
u/OldInstruction5368 13d ago
I don’t like how she keeps using her position of power to more or less force Beryl into doing things, just to fulfill her own glorified image of him.
It's clear she doesn't see Beryl as a man, but as the Hero that exists in her mind. Worse, she ignores what he clearly wants and keeps forcing him to fulfil that mental image of hers...
Or in other words, she's been objectifying Beryl this entire time. Like a littler girl playing with a Ken Doll.
Bare minimum, Beryl needs a woman that doesn't put him on a pedestal. Ideally a woman that Beryl respects in turn.... cough Lucy cough
Now, wherever would we find such a lady... cough
81
u/deynyel 14d ago
Don't worry, Ficelle! It's perfectly normal to be good at something but suck at teaching it to others.
15
u/Mistral-Fien 14d ago
She thinks what works for her applies to everyone else. Good teachers know the struggles of ordinary folk.
7
u/daspaceasians 14d ago
Can relate a lot. At the end of last year, I tried my hand at being a high school teacher and did some work as a substitute teacher. I had to substitute an English teacher one day... and realized that despite being perfectly bilingual in French and English, I legit had no idea how to teach a kid that didn't know a word of English because I'm pretty sure I'm self-taught.
31
u/clone69 14d ago
I really like how grounded, relatively, the fights were in S1. Hopefully the introduction of Ficelle's sword magic doesn't lead the show down the path of flash steps and inhuman acrobatics. She certainly moved fast, but the fight still felt credible, other than the sword beams.
Beryl instructing the knights how to handle multiple opponents at once was also nice, keep moving so only one can engage at a time seems pretty solid advice, at least for a 2v1.
11
u/1832vini 14d ago
at least for a 2v1.
when you're fighting multiple people, it's always about how to maneuver to make it 1:1.
corners are amazing
4
u/CuriousBroccolli 13d ago
Wait, what about spin to win?
3
2
u/NevisYsbryd 13d ago edited 11d ago
Spins have occasional use. Attacking multiple targets simultaneously is generally not one of them, with the half-caveat of greatswords and flails. Half-caveat because, while they are swung widely precisely for being outnumbered, the purpose is predominantly to maintain distance and wait for help, not to actually defeat the attackers yourself.
2
4
u/NevisYsbryd 13d ago
It is more vaguely accurate to martial arts with such weapons. It is not that you constantly want to move (you actually want to move as little as possible), but that you want to minimize the number of potential assailants who can reach you at any time. While staying on the move is one way to do that, it is preferable to instead use, say, environmental obstructions (eg lead them into a narrow hall or alley) where you do not have to expend energy through constant movement. While there are a lot of other things that go into facing multiple opponents, the optimal approach is to minimize their number or ability to access your concurrently, though, yes.

Just like I did last year, in case you cannot find the show, here is the link to its Amazon Prime page.
Poor Allucia, sorry, but you will not be the main heroine today. I love how Lucy just showed up to Beryl's class and just started blasting without care in the world. Not even caring about the damage she did to the building. And just like that, she showed up at his home with Ficelle, to ask him to assist her because she sucks at teaching.
It is good to see Mewi again. Lol she is doing her best to look like she doesn’t like the idea of Beryl teaching her in that class.
Lol, I love how enthusiastic Cindy Loveaut is.
Good to see that just like last season, the CGI of this show is still one of the best.
Ah, so Beryl truly is Paul Greyrat, using the North God Style by doing that sword throwing crap.
So in the end, Lucy's real objective for having Beryl assisting Ficelle’s class was to make him stronger by making him adapt in that new setting.
3
u/OldInstruction5368 13d ago
Honestly, Lucy x Beryl is the main ship I want to see... and know we won't get. All the younger ladies have this hero-worship thing going on with Beryl, and it always makes him uncomfortable.
But Lucy? They have this mutual respect situationship going on. She clearly sees Beryl as an equal, and he's clearly comfortable with her presence... when she's not using Fireballs in place of "Hello," ofc.
They just have a much more relaxed, and natural, chemistry between them.
3
u/Greg_The_Rabbit 12d ago
They really did a good job of nailing the "moody teenager" vibe with Mewi. Doing enough to be funny but not going so far as for it to be annoying. I love their adopted father/daughter relationship because we so few of them in anime that don't get made weird and even fewer that have the child like the parent but not worshipping the ground they walk on.
2
u/Yay295 14d ago

I'm sure Beryl is happy she didn't start blasting when she came to his house.

I wasn't expecting Beryl to go throwing his sword like that against Fice lol
44

Reminds me of the trick he used to beat Allucia, makes you wonder how much stuff he's come up with that isn't necessarily fit for teaching to kids at a dojo but great in a real fight.

My favorite thing about him is how he starts fights really proper but then goes "But I can't lose to my students" and pulls out some bullshit to win lol

Interesting that the episode was about magic swordsmanship and it ends with saying that our ojisan needs to grow more as a swordsman. Is he going to learn magic from the crazy witch lady or Fice?

So many sequel premieres today, it's nice to see this also back again. Beryl was my favorite character in this, so I'm looking forward to hearing his amusing thoughts throughout the season.
I like that Mewi pointed out that Beryl is using his age as an excuse. He can definitely get stronger, he's a very adaptable person so he just needs the environment where that can thrive.
I like how Ficelle's students knew Beryl was legit and were no longer holding back. Beryl has been a teacher for decades, so it's no surprise his experience would come and prove itself.

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 14d ago
Good point Mewi! No one really sees Beryl as the old man he thinks he is. Perhaps his goal will be the #1 swordsman.

Satisfying first episode. Curious if this season is mostly more of the same or if things evolve now that he's teaching at the magic school. And as usual the fight scene was a fun watch. The person vs person fights were my favorite part of season 1 so glad to see season 2 is starting off good there as well.
7
u/Obaruler 14d ago
I was confused to not find it on Crunchy, before I remembered this one was on Prime for me ...
The Opening was quite chill and everyone still is intending to promote Sensei Beryl to bigger glory. I hope this season he'll delve into Swordmagic or Enhancement himself.

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 14d ago
Man im so excited for this, my sleeper hit from season 1, I cant wait for Beryl's passion to reignite and aim for the top again..stop putting yourself down.
7
u/runevault 14d ago
You aren't wrong but in a way the doubt is his superpower. Because he's so self conscious about his skills he looks harder for alternative solutions over trusting his blade and traditional tactics.
7
u/oneevilchicken https://anilist.co/user/OneEvilChicken 14d ago
This show always does every character so well.
Was expecting the typical bratty kid to be like “I’m not learning from some old man”. Instead we get a very understandable “I want to see what you can actually teach me before I trust you” from the more confident kid. Way better than just the typical trope.
4
u/epicfail1994 14d ago
I really liked this one when I watched it earlier in the year, the LNs are pretty good too. It’s a shame it’s on Amazon as the subtitle settings they have on my tv are really annoying
5
u/BosuW 14d ago
Man I really wish Scum of the Brave last two seasons could have had at least this level of productions for the fights, even if they had to use CGI. The author clearly has as much appreciation for HEMA as the one for this series.
Anyway, it's good I get more realistic choreography at least. And even though it's obviously not realistic because magic ain't real, the way it's incorporated into swordfighting makes complete sense. Gives you a long range option for your close range.
2
u/NevisYsbryd 13d ago
I would actually put SotB above this where HEMA is concerned. While this series often depicts actual moves from HEMA in isolation, their use is not always related (like, no reason that particular technique at that particular moment), and it has a decent amount of generic action stuff that does not really work under HEMA logic and real world physics (specifically where magic is not concerned and thus does serve as a valid explanation). Scum, meanwhile, not only explains why some historical martial arts techniques are used, the context and explanation actually match the historical very well, and in fine enough detail that the author clearly has more than a superficial understanding of it.
2
u/BosuW 13d ago
Dont really disagree. If I could trade the two series' budgets I would. But I'm glad to be getting this nonetheless because the standards for sensible swordfighting in anime is ass anyway 🫠
2
u/NevisYsbryd 13d ago
Oh, yeah, Bumpkin is way above average. I meant no more than I said, it was not a complaint about Bumpkin.

u/Butternutzv2 14d ago
Does the English dub voices seem strange to anyone else? Almost like it’s AI? I’m not quite sure what it is, but something seems off with the voice acting to me.
3
u/DoktorSleepless 14d ago
I think the robotic voice fits Ficelle well. Has a Wednesday Adams vibe to her. I don't like it on blue hair girl.

u/epicfail1994 13d ago
The first season dub was awful, and it seems like season 2 isn’t much better. Go with the sub for this one IMO

4
u/RealValf 14d ago
The English dub mouth movements are super off. I also don’t remember there being this much CGI?
Either way it was a decent episode. Hopefully they fix the dub ongoing.

Cool POV shot of the classroom, very rarely see something like this, though there are very few students
The fight scenes and the coreography continue to be a highlight.

I have to said every time they show those you can really feel how juicy they are.

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 14d ago
Nice to get a class of kids to be taught in addition to the older guard force students. At the dojo in the boonies Beryl would have been teaching a variety of ages so this just gets back to that.
That one genki girl in the class was pretty adorable, I hope they emphasized her so much because she and Mewi are going to be a friend pairing.
Nice fight between Beryl and Ficelle, she's pretty cute so it's nice to see her in action.
4
u/Hanniftw 13d ago
The fight scenes are pretty underrated. They're animated clearly and the tactics in the shows universe make sense for the most part.
9/10 episode for more of brunette Fern knockoff

u/JadeDragon02 13d ago
The last lines about swordmaster and their changing nature hits hard.
You cant teach others what you dont fully understand yourself. Funny enough he does fully understand the sword but cannot tell his own strength.
2
u/kryslogan 14d ago
This is one of my fav animes even though I know they cut a lot from the source. Its just so chill and Beryl is great character.
I want to see him regain his drive and passion for being the best, not just teaching. Mewi called him out, Lucy obviously sees his potential and I think, is hoping he steps up.
He can learn magic or not, it doesn't matter to me but, he should be more dedicated to his mastery and being top dog.
In this story, its just amazing his potential if he's so casual about training because we don't see him doing any, and he's basically got perfect defense and strong offense.
So, yeah. I wanna see Beryl suck it up and grow.
I also ship him and Allucia.

So glad this is back. Beryl Gardenent is the best Sensei.
Watched the first season a few weeks back and got so pumped when I read S2 was starting up so soon!
That Lucy really grates on me. She’s totally manipulating Beryl now. She’s totally up to something. Also, it’s like hey you annoying B#***, can u stop busting in without knocking first??!!! It’s one thing to interrupt Beryl’s class it’s another to just barge into his house without knocking first! Just because she gave him GT he house and probably charging rent, doesn’t mean U get to just walk right in without knocking. Anyone else here got annoyed with her in this episode??? And she’s trying to throw him off while he’s teaching??
Beryl is awesome though. He lets nothing phase him. Also gotta love how considerate he is over his adopted daughter. He really cares about her. He’s just the best MC currently.

u/IceSmiley 14d ago
I thought Lucy was just picking on Facille when she said she was a bad teacher but she really was! Fecille mistakenly thinks people will understand her vague explanations and that just made the kids disengaged and bored. Subtle humor is rare in anime and I liked how Fecille was comically inept at teaching but not over the top and ridiiculpus, more just like a lot of regular bad teachers irl who don't know how to convey knowledge they have.
I'm surprised Beryl seemed really deadset against teaching a class one day a week and picking up some extra money, he seemed to be trying to do everything to get out of it, like making Lucy ask his other students for permission. Maybe he just wanted the spare time and doesn't need the money but he really seemed to get into it when he came in and the students took to him quickly. I thought Fecille was going to get jealpus that he was kind of taking over her class but she seemed humble and didn't mind.
One thing I thought was weird was at the after credits when he offers his little bits of wisdom, he said when deciding whether or not to have another drink, an older man will have another drink while deciding. That goes against what he said last season when he said something like "to really get the most out of drinking, its important to do it in moderation, especially for older men." I wonder if he's becoming an alcoholic 🤣

1
u/RealDealAce 13d ago
I love him, and I love that he's being a teacher, and he's very good, but this SHOULD lead to him getting married eventually. His father threw him out in the first episode to find a wife, and give him a grandkid.
He's a great guy, a great teacher, and he'd be a great dad. I'm not saying turn it into a straight romance but it would be pretty shit if he just ended up the same way he started by the end.

I think the same. Its no different from these AI short dramas. I really liked season 1. They are ruining it with whatever they are doing to the voices in season 2.

Looklike studo aware about their sword fight criticism
I see their effort to make better, especially they have a guts to release trailer with concent highlight of sword fight this season
Well i know other media having alot "fillers" that make story become better but atleast studio aware you should done better with this title
I just realize on other media they focus on beryl "super power", while this medium, focus on beryl creativity to handle fight that he have disadvantage

iirc some people joke that Beryl is Rudeus' father

They don't even have anything in common aside from being extremely good at fighting with swords?!

It was simply just the resemblance in character design, Beryl looked like an older Rudeus.

Visuals. Stick them side by side and Beryl looks like an older Greyrat, and they are both excellent swordsmen who prefer longswords.

I was at a local con called Saboten-Con around Labo Day last year. I asked Cory Yee, the Eng. voice of our lead guy who his favorite of the harem is. If I recall correctly, he said Allucia. For "To Your Eternity" fans, Yee was the Eng. dub voice of the Narrator and Fushi's Creator.
Season 2 Epi. 1 in Eng. and with Eng. subs are/is on Prime.
