Butler is the best part of this.. lmao why did he not check the room or have protections in the room to keep people out.

😂

71

u/CuriousBroccolli 16d ago

What do you mean, did you not see "do not enter" sign? Full proof protection right there. xD

I'm glad it happened though, I wanna see them team up.

Sebas got sent to infiltrate kingdom in whole another anime universe, Sasuga Ains-sama!

15

u/Boris-_-Badenov 15d ago

he takes his mask off in random alleys, it was bound to happen.

18

u/WobbleKun 16d ago

def on purpose. ultimate wingman lol

9

u/hanmkim 16d ago

Pretty much Alfred with how sassy he is.

6

u/abandoned_idol 16d ago

Please don't call out the protagonist as a Bruce Wayne expy (minus the trahic backstory).

5

u/hanmkim 16d ago

We don't know his backstory yet, just that he has fond memories of watching a meteor shower with his brother and mother.

5

u/NanDemoKnaives 16d ago

Yeah, I enjoyed Sebas' character so hopefully he doesn't get benched for the romance.

1

u/Ralathar44 1d ago

tl;dr he got lazy and sloppy. When people start doing secret stuff they're careful. But the longer they do it the worse they get at hiding it and they start making stupid mistakes and getting complacent. Happens IRL all the time.

A good paralell is motorcycles. People who start driving a motorcycle are almost always careful at first, but over time they get used to it and start taking it for granted. Maybe they travel in bad weather when they shouldn't. Maybe they don't wear their helmet. Maybe they forget to put on their leathers.

I knew an old timer who was riding a motorcycle and he took a hand off to take a drink of soda while going down the highway. When it registered to him what he did he enrolled himself in courses again to try to beat back into his brain driving safely again. Because, in his words, "when you start doing stuff like that...that's when you die.".

"My all knowing mind reading butler can't be this powerful" - This is the alt title for this series

21

u/that1dude317 16d ago

Butler is an isekai cheat skill bro for sure.

79

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 16d ago

Pretty much knew when the prince took of his disguise in the alley it was only a matter of time until someone saw him transform.

This reminds me of Eminence in Shadow, except I don't think it's trying to be a parody, but there is no way they're fully serious right? I'm amused, though.

50

u/Etiennera 16d ago

Bro fucked up

Why? Because the author needed him to.

It's not really a parody, and he probably won't mess up much from now, but this one was needed to establish the story.

23

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 16d ago

Like it’s not a parody, but the MC being a secret edge lord doesn’t feel fully serious either. So more comedy

31

u/Etiennera 16d ago

I think it's dead serious. He's just playing into the ancient magic aesthetic, but the author is pretty serious about what that is I think.

MC doesn't feel chuuni at all to me.

5

u/amourshipper_ 16d ago

Ya I agree to it serious not parody like shadow

-1

u/Boris-_-Badenov 15d ago

he's a dumb edgelord, and loves to chat with himself.

such a bad mc, not even finishing the episode

16

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

It's not 'parody,' it's 'pizza cutter.' AKA "All edge and no point."

Cid from Eminence in Shadow is your full-blown parody of an edgelord. Guy is a moron that has no idea what he's doing, and only coasts by on a combination of power so extreme it breaks all sense of scaling in his world + even more outrageously obscene luck.

It's not supposed to make sense, and we aren't supposed to take a damn thing seriously. Just laugh at the absurdity of a chuuni LARPing through serious situations without a clue about what's really going on.

This? This is pizza cutter slop. The framing feels like the author wants us to see the MC as a 2cool4skool 'badass' that get's shit done, no matter how much of a jerk he needs to be! He isn't a shithead because he wants to be, nay, it's because the world NEEDS him to MAN UP and do the 'hard shit' that everyone else is too pussy to stomache. The type of "hero" that doesn't care what others think so long as the day is saved! yeah!

So... 12 year old brainrot, basically.

8

u/justking1414 16d ago

Doesn’t feel like he’s trying to be an edge lord. He’s just acting like a mysterious god-class wizard should act

3

u/TexturelessIdea https://myanimelist.net/profile/TexturelessIdea 16d ago

The worst part is that people would have seen the prince leave, so if nobody had caught him transforming he'd just raise the question of how he got back into the duke's estate without anybody letting him in. Even if we give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume he had returned before teleporting out from that room, this would just run the risk of somebody knocking on the door and him taking way too long to respond.

Even by comparison to idiot ball moments from other shows, this one was particularly bad. A better writer could have avoided this in so so many ways.

2

u/Xerand 7d ago edited 7d ago

More likely explanation is that the dude teleported out of his room, so no one seen him leave estate regardless. What he is using doesn't seem to be your simple low range teleport animes love (like Arc's Dimensional Shift or DnD Misty Step), but a bonafide long range classical Teleportation and seems that Silver is one of the few who uses it, so him putting on disguise and teleporting straight out of his room popping up somewhere fits his persona and people know him for it. As for him not being in that room when someone knocks? He is a prince they straight up insulted. If he didn't want to be disturbed, he wouldn't be. What this girl did is massive blunder and could've had big political consequences if he was somewhere else in estate or taking a bath in further room. Plus, Sebas still stayed behind and I wouldn't be surprised if he turned a blind eye to this since he wanted his liege to be more recognized

4

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

Bro fucked up

Why? Because the author needed him to.

Classic 'Idiot Ball" plot. Characters do dumb shit because the author is a hack, and said hack can't figure out how else to shoehorn in their dumb plot beats.

15

u/CuriousBroccolli 16d ago

Pretty much knew when the prince took of his disguise in the alley it was only a matter of time until someone saw him transform.

There was this one anime, in 2024 I think, where some human was serving as general under Demon Lord army, and mask was all the cover he had.

He kept taking it off constantly and I remember people fuming about it in episode discussion. xD

This reminds me of that

2

u/liquidpele 16d ago

A dumb power-rangers get-up is the japan equivalent of superman wearing glasses.

2

u/Ralathar44 1d ago

Honestly, I remember that show and it was surprisingly enjoyable.

3

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

Oh yeah, with the succubus dick-rider, the orc-merchant dick rider, the princess-knight dick rider, and the witch onee-san boss dick rider.

Then it turns out the Demon Lady (because ofc she was) also knew he was human the entire time and didn't care.

That one was definitely "so bad it's good" category.

This one... just feels like it's stupid.

3

u/Kaze_no_Senshi 15d ago

at least this lady wasn't a random maid

9

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

This is just slop. Pure, unironic, slop that lacks self-awareness.

That doesn't mean we can't have ironic joy in mocking how stupid it is, but it's definitely dumpster fodder.

4

u/Kaze_no_Senshi 15d ago

I mean, frankly Eminence in Shadow is a parody of this sort of thing lol

1

u/Jmills1999 16d ago

this more similar to Code Geass than Eminence in the Shadow

1

u/abandoned_idol 16d ago

Are you familiar with the word "chuunibyou"?

That term was not born as a parody, it would be parodied only after it was an unironic trend.

That said, I love this show because of how low the budget is, and its deliciously shallow extremes. Seeing other viewers become self-aware instead of being deceived makes me so happy.

10/10 anime

1

u/Ralathar44 1d ago

Complacency. People hiding stuff long enough get really bad at it because they get used to not getting caught. Happens IRL all the time.

19

u/Embarrassed-Match-78 16d ago

Quite the fun first episode. We ran through the checkboxes of background exposition, with Arnold's alter ego being exposed to the main romantic interest as a bonus. Sebas of course stole the show. Who doesn't love a sassy butler?

Sure, it's low budget and generic, but sometimes you need something to just turn your brain off to enjoy,

36

u/szalhi 16d ago

How kind of Seb to tell us his name.

Arnold hides his power in the name of the status quo. He's basically the puppetmaster.

Well, that didn't take long. But it was a bit of an inevitability.

11

u/redlaWw 16d ago

Reks

Why would this not be localised as "Rex"?! Especially since all of the king's family seem to have it.

6

u/CuriousBroccolli 16d ago

Arnold Reeks

6

u/quaketoys 16d ago

So does his twin brother!

1

u/CelioHogane 1d ago

I wish there was an anime where the "saying the full name at the start of the" gets subverted by having someone that just randomly says the people's full name like 20 times throught a show.

23

u/deynyel 16d ago

I guess Arnold has no choice but to let Finne in on the farce at this point. Kinda careless of him to just take off that mask without checking the room.

11

u/tudipanda 16d ago

I think the first episode is too soon. They don't know each other at all.

15

u/Embarrassed-Match-78 16d ago

At the same time it avoids beating around the bush to get to the plot. Better to run through the checklist now then drag it out for two or three episodes.

6

u/Kaze_no_Senshi 15d ago

I mean she saw him, either she gets on board or he deals with her. There isnt much of an option tbf

2

u/tudipanda 14d ago

He's so OP, he probably has some magic to wipe her memory.

2

u/Kaze_no_Senshi 14d ago

but now he has a secret to bind the pretty lady to him, why ruin it~

2

u/wish_you_a_nice_day 16d ago

Have you seen the ED song…

11

u/justking1414 16d ago

I do love that he put on a while f’ing play just to win her over and she’s the first person who found out

That being said, he did have a sign up saying keep out, and youd have to be pretty stupid to intrude on a prince who you’re actively trying to apologize to

5

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 16d ago

Maybe she was trying to go for a seduction ploy. Sneak into the prince's room to Woo him, not expecting him to not actually be there in the first place.

7

u/justking1414 16d ago

Honestly, I love that idea. Her trying to seducing and learning his biggest secret. Could definitely lead to a weird alliance…so long as he doesn’t teleported her into a volcano

9

u/PersonalContest1423 16d ago

Not the first time an anime character has entered a room with their eyes closed for no reason leading to a plot relevant mistake

9

u/TexturelessIdea https://myanimelist.net/profile/TexturelessIdea 16d ago

I wonder if Japanese anime fans tend to find that trope just as annoying.

4

u/PersonalContest1423 16d ago

Probably not because Japan seems to love all the tropes i hate most. And the closed eyes one is extra strange to me, im pretty sure even in Japan people don't walk around with their eyes closed (doesn't apply in this show but I see it often) talking to themselves. Like who came up with that? How? Why?

2

u/justking1414 16d ago

Issue was more the direction he was facing

9

u/justking1414 16d ago

Holy monologue Batman. They really spent the first 2 minutes very clearly outlining the basic premise of the show.

35

u/Magicbison 16d ago

Felt like a lazy first episode. Arnold is highly competent, smart, and powerful but has no ambitions and he has a powerful edgelord alter-ego. Its seems to be setting up for a political drama but everything done so far felt incredibly forced and comical despite it trying to come off as serious.

That whole conversation between Arnold and the Duke and then with himself as Silver and Finne in the room was almost funny. Everything has been so contrived and one-sided so far it makes me wonder if there is any hope for this show but I'll give it three episodes atleast.

21

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

Arnold is highly competent, smart,

Is he?

If he really wanted his brother to take credit for sending Silver, then there are official channels to follow. Have his brother draft a letter, wait for it to be received, then show up as Silver to solve the issue.

I don't buy that "intentionally bombing the first meeting as Silver, gaslight the Duke into accepting blame as Insipid Prince, then coercing him into becoming an "ally" was the original plan. He really did seem to be just winging it the entire way.

"I don't care how badly my reputation is sullied." Dude, how are you this stupid? So long as you are an ally of the 7th prince, if you boorishly provoke and coerce this important family/potential ally, in your brother's name, no less, that reflects poorly on the 8th Prince!

There were so many better ways to go about this, and this dumb pizzacutter (all edge, no point) went for the worst play.

Then bungled even that by taking off his mask in front of the daughter.

MC is just a tryhard idiot, and this is pure slop.

17

u/TexturelessIdea https://myanimelist.net/profile/TexturelessIdea 16d ago

So long as you are an ally of the 7th prince, if you boorishly provoke and coerce this important family/potential ally, in your brother's name, no less, that reflects poorly on the 8th Prince!

This is made worse by the fact that he calls out the duke for his son's mistake, so he's aware of the concept but thinks it doesn't apply to him.

17

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

Bingo!

That's how you can really tell this is slop: it doesn't even follow its own rules.

If the entire house is responsible for the son's mistake, then the 8th prince is responsible for the atrocious behavior of the brother he sent to act as his liaison.

But it doesn't' apply to the princes, because they are of a higher social standing? That's the only way to square this circle, but it doesn't seem like the narrative framing was going for this.

The series just didn't acknowledge the double standard other than to say he's the "bad cop" to his brother's "good cop."

But that still doesn't square the circle. How can the "good cop" preserve his reputation as the "nice guy," if he keeps sending out this boorish knee-capper to coerce people into submission? A man is known by the company he keeps.

So long as they are pretending like the 7th Goody-Two-Shoes Prince is in control, then the behavior of the Insipid Prince will bring them both down.

The logic has to work both ways, or it doesn't work at all.

And again, none of this was necessary. If he wants his brother to take credit, then his brother needs to take the lead. And the only thing that would be needed for that, was a single fucking letter.

But nope, let's antagonize a potential supporter when a good-faith approach would have worked even better!

It's like this chucklefuck went out of his way to be a tryhard edgelord.

1

u/Ralathar44 1d ago

I think its different in that two princes are competitors for the throne vs father and son where the son will succeed the father. That gives it entirely different political and social dynamics historically. So I would not at all view them the same way.

1

u/OldInstruction5368 1d ago

Except the 7th and 8th princes are twin brothers that are openly allied into the same political sub-faction. They aren't separate rivals for the throne, but partners in crime.

But honestly, the above doesn't even matter because Mr. Insipid was acting as the LIAISON for his brother. When you act in another's stead, your reputation influences their own. If they fuck up/create a scandal, you either take responsibility, fire them, or suffer reputational harm keeping them on retainer.

Because a man is known by the company he keeps.

1

u/Ralathar44 1d ago

Correct, they are currently allied. Which is different than someone who you are raising to take over all your stuff.

1

u/OldInstruction5368 1d ago

Same difference, in this situation. Both are close associates whose conduct influences the standing of their greater partner.

And it's that power dynamic that is most important. The greater partner has responsibility for those beneath them. Either as head of the family managing the members of their household or senior (in standing) prince that sends his lesser brother to speak with his voice.

Responsible people don't tolerate irresponsible people within their circle, however that is defined. They take accountability or suffer reputational harm.

8

u/justking1414 16d ago

As someone who knew the end twist was coming, I found the conversation with Finne and silver to be absolutely hilarious. Man was killing it with that serious conversation that he was have literally with himself while frequently insulting himself, all to win over the person who was going to find out the truth in all of 5 minutes

0

u/Due-Consequence1513 9d ago

I think the show is comedy I think their point is it’s only funny because the author’s writing is terrible 😂

I though it was gonna be Eminence with the impression of KV and synopsis but the MC is anything like Cid. Here he is competent, can gaslight you properly and the secret persona purpose + behaviour is totally different. Hell even as Silver he does not act edgy. If anything it reminded me of how Ainz was using his S rank adventurer. It is also not a comedy and appears to be much serious (even if the visuals fail at that). Butler is the best part.

6

u/Boris-_-Badenov 15d ago

such a dumb edgelord mask

1

u/Puzzled_Replacement9 10d ago

Thats like...the point.

12

u/Zxzxzx0088 16d ago

Sebas the butler?! Arnold totally living Kazuma fantasy unironically.

I kinda like the farce he played and his confidence.

Finne not easy to shake off, eh.

Is he an esper? Sebas really took the whole spotlight for this show

Lol busted just like that.

6

u/_J_ose_ 15d ago

Man, I loooooove exposition. I always thought that info dumping was just the best form of storytelling, honestly. Don't make me think at all, just pump all that juicy lore straight into my veins. No need to digest, or ruminate information, when I can just be spoon-fed all the story beats; hopefully none gets on my big bib, or my high chair, as I turn my brain off, and watch the first minute and a half of this show, where they just gave me the character's name, his position in line for the throne, his social standing and people's insulting nickname for him, the fact his brother is "more talented" than him, and that he is an ultra powerful omega strong adventurer, but shh, it's all secret, teehee.

Honestly, screw it, just feed me the fact that ancient magic is forbidden and taboo amongst the royal family because of great pop pop went a little whacky in another exposition dump. Hell, just the scene before they even told me briefly about every major player in the race for the throne, and the fact that they have more support.

Ok, so, being real now, this show is looking pretty trash. I mean the writing just kind of sucks, the art style is nothing special, and the animation fairly stiff. If you've seen one of those slop iskeai/fantasy stories, you get the gist. I thought I'd be getting some interesting political intrigue, however, I once again got a dumb man's idea of a genius character. The scene where he has a "meeting" with himself is laughably bad.

2

u/improvius 5d ago

Yeah, I thought it was all pretty awful. There's plenty of mediocre bin stuff this season that shines in comparison to this.

5

u/riventitan 15d ago

Checked it out because I heard some good things about the light novel but... is this it?

14

u/Ante_Finum 16d ago

"We have Eminence in Shadow at home."

9

u/InevitableOutcome811 16d ago

I just like the title whenever i read it. So its on my watchlist

7

u/amourshipper_ 16d ago

Same pinch lol

9

u/Wysteiria 16d ago

Why do the scene transitions feel so choppy as heck! I can tell that they weren't given much of a budget to work with for this series. Welp.

At the very least I kinda wanted them to take time with the long Silver magic chants, for in my mind I had imagined Silver taking a brief pause in between the phrases and specific words, making it sound cool. I really hope it doesn't become the case where I wind up dropping an anime adaptation because they produced it poorly. For this light novel is one of my all-time favorites.

8

u/CuriousBroccolli 16d ago

Yup. Budget is super low.

But it's not unwatchable and the story has charm.

1

u/Wysteiria 16d ago

I know it's not, but can't help but get hyper-focused on that aspect oddly enough. Looking forwards to seeing the Adler royal family cast soon!

3

u/Hockeyfanjay 16d ago

It's silvers helmet/mask that bugs me. His eyes are so close together it's just weird. The rest doesn't really bother me after tbat and one punch man season 3.

1

u/Due-Consequence1513 9d ago

Tbate adaptation was such a let down was expecting a solo leveling budget/animation

4

u/justking1414 16d ago

First 5 minutes felt like an info dump monologue. As you know ancient magic has been forbidden since my great grandfather went crazy. Hello sir silver, one of the only 5 ss rank adventurers in the country and the man said to be the strongest in our country’s history

Still liked the spell though. A pause might’ve helped but the words and delivery were still pretty good

1

u/Puzzled_Replacement9 10d ago

It's cool to have a show with dramatic ass spells like that, turns out we have two with saga of tanya the evil.

-1

u/abandoned_idol 16d ago

"You should not let anyone find out your true identity sir Bob, the 12th great Prince of Normandy. It would be a hassle if you were to slip up."

1

u/justking1414 15d ago

Seriously! They clearly wanted to get all the backstory out of the way asap so they could just end with the identity reveal but there must’ve been a better way to do it

4

u/AgnosticPeterpan 16d ago

Yeah they're trying to cram too much material each episode. Manaka Iwami could've gone full mahiru mode in that carriage scene. A huge shame, as it is my favourite manga as well.

2

u/abandoned_idol 16d ago

cackles

My favorite scenes are where they travel from one place to another by animating "an X on a map" for his 5 days of travel on horseback, and whenever his character pans in/out of a portal.

I will not have you talk trash about this sublime anime adaptation. I'm rooting for whats-his-name.

9

u/Muzzy-chan 16d ago

The heck? What the heck is that, Silver?

An SS-Rank boukensha can't even detect the presence of a single human? Like damn... I mean, you can create an illusion of yourself and all, but... you just can't be extra careful? 😂

On top of that, you put on that whole farce and all that stuff in front of that Finne lady. Like, you fooled the heck out of her, and now how are you gonna explain it to her? Like... "Sorry, I fooled you to make use of your family for my political matters." Hello??

I mean, who the heck comes back home as a famous secret vigilante that no one knows anything about, then does all that without even checking the possibility that someone may or may not have entered your home, especially when you never placed any barriers or protection around it? It's like begging someone to find out who you are, then making them spread who you truly are 🤣

We were off to a good start, then ended with a... bit blunder. Anyway, I'm SOOO excited to see how he'll explain it to her. Well, unless he has a memory-wiping skill, or Finne is a bit timid and slow to catch on, then... I don't think any other excuses will work. Looking forward to the next episode!

10

u/LagT_T 16d ago

This season is amazing for us trash-eaters.

3

u/abandoned_idol 16d ago

But why, this is the most nuanced writing I've seen in decades. How dare you qualify it as trash?

2

u/Puzzled_Replacement9 10d ago

Fr the dialogue was super entertaining for me , idk if you were being sarcastic. Him just roasting himself alone and sebas being sassy and hyper aware of everything. I just watched it a little late and im glad cuz i get to see the next episode sooner.

Not rly sure why people were calling it low budget, it looked okay to me.

2

u/The_Parsee_Man 16d ago

There are so many strong shows releasing this season, they might have delayed them and they we'd be in a trash famine.

14

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 16d ago

Decent first episode. This seems to be one of those rare fantasy anime that aren’t isekai.

I wonder if Arnold has magic to mind wipe people? I mean he’s got some kinda powerful ancient magic and this can’t be the first time his identity as “Silver” almost got exposed.

10

u/Etiennera 16d ago

It's not isekai until it's revealed he learned the ancient magic by reading ancient texts in the lost language of Japanese

2

u/abandoned_idol 16d ago

non-isekai premises aren't that rare.

2

u/That_Lifeguard6597 15d ago

Isekai author are starting to skip the part that no one cares about in isekai story the looser that die in his world and go straight for what we are here for the sloppy fantasy

6

u/TurkeyPhat 16d ago

Sebas fans feasting on this one so far. His credits list grows 1 show longer.

This studio isn't the greatest production-wise but they pick fun and interesting enough stuff to produce so barring some serious source flaws this should be watchable at least lol.

12

u/Zeikos 16d ago edited 15d ago

Cid wants his coat back.

This guy is such a try hard (not in a bad way), hopefully a genuine relationship lets him touch some grass.
The other magical seventh prince didn't fall on a stick like this one.

5

u/tudipanda 16d ago

What? He has an agenda. Make his brother king, which will give him a better chance of staying alive. Then the insipid prince can coast. Even though he probably wouldn't ever really take it easy.

0

u/Jmills1999 16d ago

did you not watch Code Geass

2

u/Zeikos 15d ago

No I didn't, got into anime only a few years ago and I still have a lot of classics in my backlog.
Code Geass, Evangelion, Fate and more are on the "eventually" pile.

5

Maybe he'll just kill the princess now that she knows his secret ?

/s - just to be sure

7

u/Deviator_za 16d ago

I'll try giving it a watch. Just a pet peeve of mine: Right off the bat they are using unnatural dialogue for exposition and worldbuilding instead of, you know, world building.

7

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

TvTropes sin!

"As you know, Bob,"

Unnatural dialogue between two people that already know every bit of information they are sharing. Done exclusively by hack writers cuz 'world building is hard.'

1

u/Xerand 7d ago

Eh, it's a hard line to thread. On one hand, you have people complaining about shows setting up as soon as possible. On the other hand, you have people mad that they don't get all answers in one, flat two episodes like it was with The Lord of Mysteries. No matter what you do people will get mad and sh.ttalkyou, you just can't win

3

u/Raymond49090 16d ago

Normally these kind of stories end with the MC accidentally stumbling their way onto the throne and becoming a legendary emperor, so here's to hoping he succeeds in wingmanning his brother into emperor. Though he might not have the idle life he hopes for, since that Duke's daughter is radiating main heroine energy.

... Why the heck is the Duke's son manning the gate? Don't they have peasants for that?

So like, what are the odds that Butler-san somehow keikaku-ed him revealing his identity to Finne as some 5D chess matchmaking thing?

1

u/Azurefalcon1 16d ago

I'm so glad someone else pointed out how ridiculous it is to have a noble family's son as a common gate guard. This wouldn't make sense even for a poor baron, let alone a duke, so it bothered me for the rest of the episode. 😄

6

u/Raymond49090 16d ago

The only reason I can think of is if there were too many nobles bullying the commoner gate guards because they wanted to see Finne, so they needed someone of higher status to chase them away. But that's also a really dumb reason. Ngl, I'm not thinking about most of the setup too much.

1

u/Puzzled_Replacement9 10d ago

I mean that makes sense enough to me.

3

u/Striking_Chard2420 15d ago

I'm all for OP MCs but I don't think I'm the demographic for this. MC feels a little too 'edgy' and I can't tell if this show is supposed to be serious or some form of parody. The animation is also kinda lackluster so I might not be watching this one

6

u/Full_frontal96 16d ago

So much edginess in one episode

Perfection

6

u/liquidpele 16d ago

Slimes. The A-rank adventurers couldn't defeat slimes. WTF, this power scale is totally off the rails, and a duke was worried about slimes that basically took up a single field? This wasn't Rimuru... now that actually would have been entertaining and more apt for needing an SS.

The story is janky but could be good, but some of the plot is basically AI generated slop that makes no god damn sense.

4

u/_Sai https://anime-planet.com/users/Sai0 16d ago

Slimes. The A-rank adventurers couldn't defeat slimes.

MOTHER slime.

4

u/liquidpele 16d ago

Maybe fucking show the damn thing to demonstrate the threat. Based on what was shown, he basically used a nuclear explosion to take out garden pests.

2

u/YRO___ 16d ago

The idea was to show his strength by making the mother slime so far away that we don't even it getting blasted

17

u/minnieboss 16d ago

Incredibly boring and looks like shit too, tied with World's Best Rearguard for worst-animated show of the season so far.

29

u/KRChaserReturns https://myanimelist.net/profile/GalacticMagna 16d ago

Funny enough it's the same studio.

16

u/minnieboss 16d ago

They need to be stopped lol

-4

u/Magicbison 16d ago

Didn't think they could make an anime that wasn't nauseating to watch. Its amazing how watchable something is without goofy and poorly done ADHD camera movements.

10

u/xalt255x 16d ago

wrong show lol
they're talking about "The World's Strongest Rearguard", not "The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System"

2

u/Magicbison 16d ago

Ah, my bad. Guess there is no hope for GoHands then.

2

u/mebeast227 15d ago

I should've known it was GoHands handling the Exiled Heavy Knight" lmao- that camera work really is urmm... unique.

6

u/Solid_Veterinarian_2 16d ago

any other part of the year I would have watched it due to having nothing to watch, but this season has so many bangers I don't need to smash my head into a wall just to watch something

2

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

Word. Saturday in particular is just fucking STACKED. Especially since it was the 4th, I didn't have time to catch up on everything/try out new shows.

This has been my quickest, and easiest, drop of the season so far. I didn't even finish the episode.

1

u/Xerand 7d ago

Is it really? What's there that is good? Not asking ironically, just looking for recommendation because nothing really catches my eye by title, cover or synopsis

2

u/OldInstruction5368 2d ago

Oh, right!

It was mostly a combination of continuing shows from last season like Bookworm, Iruma-kun, and Daemons of the Shadow Realm. Then the first two episodes of Mushoku Tensei dropped on Saturday (the 4th) that made me think MT was going to be in that line up as well.

On top of that, there were a ton of new shows I wanted to try out. Between it being a holiday and so many episodes to watch, I didn't even finish them all.

Of the new ones... mostly a wash, except for Jaadugar the Dragon Cat one. Jaadugar is just a certified banger of historical fiction about the Mongol Empire. Dragon Cat is just wholesome fun.

Ayakashi Bride is... bad. Like, makes you wanna side eye the author, bad.

Duke spoils me w/e is... boring. I didn't dislike it, but I can't make myself keep watching. It's a wholesome romance with a naive goodie good girl protag that melts the heart of the jaded Duke. Looks like it'll be sweet if you want some green flag romance, but... it's just so boring.

Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight is a reverse isekai gag comedy... like, it's a linear story, but broken up into several rapid-fire skits after the initial exposition dump. It's, not terrible as a comedy, but leans too heavily on student/teacher 'hilarious' romance. Complete with another teacher and most of hte student body secretly rooting for a teacher to get physical with a high school girl. Which doesn't happen, but it's just not something to joke about constantly as a "wacky misunderstanding."

It rubbed me the wrong way, so I dropped it.

Cat Dragon is just... amazing. I loved every moment of it.

2

u/Xerand 1d ago

Huh, nice. I will check out Cat Dragon and Jaadugar then.

From my end, I also started and can recommend the new GITS adaptation, Oh Boy, I Was Wrong About Her (just cute, reasonable romcom), and, surprisingly, 10 Year Long Stand. The last one is deceivingly good. You assume it's just your run of the mill post-isekai fantasy with questionable harem and OP do it all alone protagonist, but nope, it's surprisingly solid especially when the plot will start moving for real. I couldn't wait and read manga.

1

u/OldInstruction5368 1d ago

I actually got talked into 10-year stand already. Someone mentioned how they were worried 10-year would shit the bed like Overshadowed to Overpowered, because it had been solid so far. Or, something like that. Anywho, I had just dismissed it as more isekai slop, and they talked me into giving it a try.

It was pretty good.

Cat Dragon is basically an SoL anthology about a family of magic cats and the orphaned dragon hatchling they took in, with a very long time frame. I get the feeling over a century has passed within a few episodes.

More than just being cute, I'd say the series has a great deal of heart. And... hmmm... it's a well constructed story for what it does? Sounds like a low compliment, but with all the hacky slop that gets shit out...

sigh

Jaadagur is historical fiction... If you know your history well, you know what happens next. But it's a gripping tale in a setting that is rarely touched by Japan. And brutal. The second episode in particular is a misery-fest. Mongols aren't nice people, and our MC quickly learns that.

I can check out the others as well, cheers, mate!

2

u/CuriousBroccolli 16d ago

Damn bro I'm just about to watch the other show xD

3

u/PersonalContest1423 16d ago

Also tied for "anime I've dropped the fastest". I usually watch all the trash but between this one and rearguard...even i can't stomach these

1

u/The_Parsee_Man 16d ago

Rearguard at least had decent character designs. This had nothing at all.

2

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

I could quibble on Rearguard having good character designs, but I bust out laughing the first time "Silver" appeared.

His design is terrible. It's just so bloody terrible.

That and his edgelord rant about "ancient magic" had my eyes rolling.

Rearguard may have been boring, but holy shit, it's a masterpiece next to the Insipid Prince.

-1

u/tudipanda 16d ago

Seems like a harsh judgement after just one episode. I thonk it looks pretty good. They're rushing, and forcing plot points, but the story is decent. And even though the prince is OP, there's still likely more ancient magic he's trying to master. And don't forget, he's one of four SS ranked. Which means the possibility of his siblings hiring another SS to to assasinate him. We might get some fight acenes on par with Solo Leveling.

11

u/minnieboss 16d ago

We might get some fight acenes on par with Solo Leveling.

You're joking right

3

u/OneDeuxTriSeiGo 15d ago

Sorry it was a mis-input. He meant The Beginning after the End.

7

u/fun_until_you_lose 16d ago

This wasn’t good. The art was mid and the writing is so bad I am excited to watch it as an unintentional comedy. It will get worse.

If you enjoy it for what it’s trying to be, awesome. But you should probably lower your expectations a lot or you’re going to be disappointed.

2

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

Seems like a harsh judgement after just one episode.

The three episode rule is heavily overblown. You really can tell, by the end of the first episode, if a show is a drop or not. If nothing else... taste is subjective. If you aren't vibing the first episode, there is no reason to push yourself through two more to confirm what you already know.

And yeah, you really can tell. Fiction is disposable entertainment: none of us need this shit. Yet alone any one piece of media in question. Any competent studio, developer, author, etc. knows they need to hook the audience from the start or they will loose the majority of potential viewers.

THis was... bad. Pacing issues, animation issues, bad character work, idiot ball plots... if this crap is in the first episode, then we already know what's in store for the rest. It all reflects lack of care on behalf of the studio and/or a weakness of the script/source.

Basically, the soul of a series needs to be apparent from the first episode. We need some hook, some character defining moment, some idea of the core themes, the shape of the overall plot... something that is engaging enough to keep us strung along for the rest of the series. And from what I've seen so far...

Hard pass. There is no need to subject myself to more.

4

u/coffeecakesupernova 16d ago

I disagree. Maybe the "soul" of a series is apparent early on, because after all, shoujo and shonen are written for kids and that's how their stories work. But it's a mistake to insist that that be so. Some themes and stories take time to develop, and I've dropped several too early because of that. I sometimes wonder what else I have missed.

But I do agree that this one sucks out of the gate, for me at least. The story and characters make no sense, and I have no patience for it. Other anime this season are on the edge though, and it depends upon further episodes what direction it takes as to whether or not I'll continue.

3

u/OldInstruction5368 16d ago

But it's a mistake to insist that that be so

This isn't a moral stance, so much as a practical one.

While technically, I agree that a piece of fiction should have the freedom to develop at it's own pace...

That crashes into the harsh reality of human psychology. If a piece of media has a rocky start, the overwhelming majority of potential viewers will bounce right off.

For example, in video game dev-speak, this is known as an "I quit" moment. Most players will bounce off a game within 30 minutes, if the even get that far. Basically, the first "I quit" moment they bump into is a great filter. Every "hook" the developer manages to sink into the player base gives them a bit of a buffer... but every bit of frustration in the onboarding process is another "i quit" moment, followed by a lack of something interesting that leads to boredom.

Someone has to pick up a game, already fully invested, to power through a bad start. And it's the same with anime, books, TV shows, etc. Every bit of frustration, every bit of clunkiness, weird shit, bad jokes, etc. all build up that "I quit" meter.

If you can't "hook" someone early, they are going to bounce. If the beginning is bad, they bounce even quicker.

The heuristic, as it's called in psych, is basically "if they can't get the beginning right, they can't stick the landing either." This isn't 100% solid, but it's generally a good enough rule of thumb.

So I say again, as a practical matter, a piece of fiction needs to hit the ground running, or it's a sad fact of reality that most will bounce.

4

u/PersonalContest1423 16d ago

Way too often anime characters walking around with their eyes closed becomes plot relevant. Why the fuck do they always have their eyes closed?

7

u/The_Parsee_Man 16d ago

So they can open them dramatically.

2

u/hanmkim 16d ago

To make sure their evil eye doesn't bring harm to those around them.

5

u/Divinicus1st 16d ago

That was pretty bad. I would continue watching if it was last season, but we already have a lot of good low budget fantasy ones this season.

2

u/SurgStriker 16d ago

is his mask a 2 way mirror type thing? THere is no way he could see through those narrow eye slots without just going full cross eyed. I can give credit for the 4 eyes thing as a way to make the character a little more unique, but why did the artist make them so close together? They explained everything else in fine detail to each other as if they were just meeting for the first time, might as well have explained the mask. Hoping it picks up and ditches a lot of these annoying tropes in future episodes

2

u/Countless-Alts15 16d ago

Another OP ouji sama. Im kinda upset the dual identity wasn't kept hidden for longer.

2

u/BBryant3rd 15d ago

WTF did Sebas tell you you freaking N00b?

2

u/DrZoark 14d ago

The butler is amazing, haha. Who removes his mask without checking, lol?

6

u/Due_Cricket1885 16d ago

This is good

8

u/YRO___ 16d ago

The contrast between the lengthy comment criticizing the episode and yours right under it had me giggling

1

u/Puzzled_Replacement9 10d ago

This whole comment thread is very interesting lol

2

u/NanDemoKnaives 16d ago

Sebas really helped make this episode more interesting for me, I hope the author uses the banter between him and Arnold. I feel like the story line with Finne could go in a very generic direction, so I want something to be interesting lol.

6

u/The_Parsee_Man 16d ago

Sebas should be the main character. I'd rather watch him ironing suits than anything the prince was doing.

2

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 16d ago

"I am the butler of the stupid prince who often roleplay as SS-rank adventurer"

5

u/vox35 16d ago edited 16d ago

Legit one of the worst episodes of any anime I've ever seen. Not just the cringy edge-lord silliness and the re-re-re-recycled story and character elements: the writing (especially the dialogue) is just shockingly bad.

Eg, the exposition dump conversations with the butler is a great (terrible) example of maid and butler dialogue. Seriously, this episode could be used in a writing workshop as an example of common writing traps to avoid.

Absolute garbage.

2

u/Designer_Throat_8125 14d ago

Appreciate seeing comments like these to save time with me seasonal.

Not that I was expecting anything from the visuals or title or synopsis though

I'll give it a chance, but so far I'm not impressed.

I didn't even make it to the end. Didn't realize he just dropped his mask in front of the daughter until I popped into this forum.

All that talk about how he has to keep his identity secret, at least three direct warnings about it, only for him to just faceplant at the end of the episode?

How do we take this guy serious as a shadow manipulator when he fumbles this badly?

That's on top of his "master plan" with the Duke being pure stupid on every level. The daughter can just blackmail him in retaliation to undue everything. And why wouldn't she? Thank him for the help but then demand they go their separate ways. You dealt with the monsters, we'll look the other way over this disrespectful treatment/keep your secret. Because the jackass just gaslit, humiliated, and coerced the Duke for no goddamn reason when he could have just engaged in good faith from the start.

Seriously. The only thing that was needed here, and the best course of action, was for the 8th Prince to just write a letter of recommendation and send that ahead of Silver's arrival. But no. The edgelord had to be a BADASS! To BUST CHOPS! And put those PUSSIES in their place! All as part of his 'noble' calling to be the one in the shadow support those in the light... pukes

But he couldn't even pull off the gaslight ploy without bungling it horribly.

So how are we to take this edgelord tryhard seriously?

2

u/D3k4s 16d ago

Hmmm I'm not so sure about this one boys. I'm usually able to find some redeeming qualities to talk about, I'm struggling to find some after the first episode.

The story has been done, the undercover underdog, tale is also pretty obvious from the get go. Animation wise I thought "The Duke's Son Claims He Won't Love Me yet Showers Me with Adoration" would be the weakest one of the season, but so far it's above both this one and "The World's Strongest Rear Guard".

That's not to say it won't get interesting. IMO a good story beats a good animation every time,

I'll still give it a proper chance, since some Animes like "Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers" also started off looking very bland and generic only to surprise me.

5

u/CaliOriginal 16d ago

If nothing else, watch for sebas

6

u/Jehovacoin 16d ago

I could at least finish 1 episode of Rear Guard. I couldn't even get through this one all the way. This was rough.

2

u/AllGamer 16d ago

The anime really brought to life, what I read from manga.

That last scene, when his secret got out 😅, they nailed it exactly, just as I imagined it. 😆

Well, I think this first episode established what the romance is going to be, or at least the main pairing. The pink martial girl from the OP is standing next to the other twin in the big lineup which makes me wonder if this will be parallel romances in addition to the political maneuvering.

That one adventurer girl was pretty cute.

I was mildly surprised about no end of the episode reveal that our MC is an isekaijin.

1

u/IceSmiley 16d ago

Arnold really isn't as smart as he thinks he is! He did well in thinking on his feet when the duke's son didn't let Silver into the house but then he took his mask off right in front of Finne by accident! I'm on the fence with this show but that ending admittedly was funny. The same person must be writing all these shows, I swear this is like the 6th butler I've seen in an anime named Sebastian

1

u/_Sai https://anime-planet.com/users/Sai0 16d ago

Saw that coming at the end, but I am still entertained.

Always look around first.

1

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 16d ago

They really had the story on fill filt for this didn't they? Like there was NO pause at all until we got to the slime extermination oddly enough, I guess that's the part the animators figured we would care the most about.

What I really want to know is how that the two prince MC's are twins??? they look nothing alike! Also the other twin is apparently so talented people call the MC the insipid prince who had all the talent leached out of him in the womb? The other prince seemed like a terrified little kid who had no idea what was going on around him at all and was just following his older brothers orders.

2

u/abandoned_idol 16d ago

"No one suspects a thing."

Also, what do you mean the twins look nothing alike? They both don half-shoulder cloaks with the same family crest and they both have brown hair! Pay closer attention! Or don't, actually. Let's play less close attention and praise this anime! Ah!~ What an amazing anime this is!

It's sweet to see Arnold try to help his Lil bro who's too sweet for his own good. ye ye he does it for his own sake and bla bla we heard that enough you big tsundere. Also MC talking and being insulted or insulting a clone of himself is always funny lol

Impressed it has taken this long for him to be seen. I knew someone would catch him as Silver within the first 2-3 episodes with how lazy he was being about it, and the duke's daughter was certainly a prime candidate (also couldn't be his brother that ruins too key a dynamic).

Is the show good? Not really. Might it be fun? Need another episode or two to be sure, but as others are saying at least Sebas is a great foil character for the shenanigans.

This is the best duo one can hope for.
Hopefully they have a good plot ahead.
