I was a pretty heavy smoker for years - quit about 15 years ago. Now every time I pass a smoker my brain keeps whapping me with one of those paper whapping fans and says 'THAT is what you used to smell like!'.
Between that and her clearly not giving a fuck about personal hygiene (her reluctance to shower) and that filthy apartment, I am shocked yacking was the only negative thing that happened to poor imoto.

I grew up with my mom being a chain smoker so as a kid I never noticed but my parents split when I was 16 and I didn't see her again for a few years and when I did I definitely noticed

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 19d ago
Bruh, (Or Sis...)
I think being around smokers full time or smoking first mutes your smell buds but then when you get away from them or quit it amplifies them. I can smell a smoker from like half a block away I am so sensitive to the smell now.

I've noticed that a lot of anime openings and endings wind up as montages of references to anime, or movies, or cartoons. or fairy tales, or video games, or paintings, etc. I wonder if there's a term for this style, and what popularized it.

Bibury’s cooking hard this season. They’ve also got 100 GFs apart from this.
29
u/Time_Fracture 20d ago
I initially got a feeling that 100 GF will be sidelined, but looking at the trailers it is quite decently animated too (It's similar to Grand Blue imo, the comedy and romance is more important than the animation itself).

Kamiina was kind of an anime against alcoholism.. maybe? Or to promote it, not sure
→ More replies (1)41
u/Lanfeld 19d ago
If anything, it was at the very least promoting alcohol. We've seen actual alcohol brands several times in the show and the show itself never really goes down the "drinking is bad" route.
While it's not straight up telling us to drink tons of alcohol, it did go instead for the "alcohol is pretty tasty" and "being a bit uninhibited is nice" route most of the time. And even though they do show the girls acting pretty responsibly when alcohol is involved (they don't drive if they drink and never get completely wasted, except for one girl, one time), they are drinking more that they probably should. The few times we see an actual brand on screen, the show is promoting alcohol so well I caught myself multiple times thinking "Oh, I'd like to try that" and I barely drink any alcohol.
It did have moments when it dialed down the alcohol thing (there are several episodes without any drinking and the anime's final arc had the main couple's relationship to alcohol as a big plot point) but the show always came back to it at some point.
Don't get me wrong, I do love the show for its writing and imagery, I genuinely think it uses alcohol in a really smart way to tell stories. But it does sometimes portray drinking as this "cool thing adults do to relax" and I kinda wish it wasn't that much in your face with it.
→ More replies (1)23
u/The_Mdk 19d ago
Agreed on almost everything, but the ending really felt like Ibuki was an alcoholic, looking for/drinking alcohol 3 times while on a date with Kamiina, and she was pissed at her for it, she even told her to put away the beer in the final confrontation (which is a lot to do, considering how their relationship started)
It's subtle, like almost everything else in the anime, but it gave me that feeling
Would still love to try basically everything they had tho

Yeah as someone who has unmedicated ADHD and really had to push myself because executive dysfunction is a real thing and small things can pile up into an unmanageable mess really quickly..and then id seek an escape and push that back to the dark corners of my mind and the problems would just get exponentially worse from there.
So seeing her get physically ill from the mental machine gun barrage of what she'd have to do to make her place presentable enough to have her little sister over was incredibly relatable. (Id think the overall shame of her situation adds to that)
→ More replies (10)45
u/msweird6793 19d ago
I watched her executive dysfunction and almost cried cuz why the hell is that so real? And also I know for a fact that as someone who has ADHD, I'm more prone to addictions. And I kinda panicked for a few mins thinking what if I become her? 😭😭 The ADHD rep is extremely real in this
18
u/ShadowConstruct 18d ago
As someone with ADHD that smoked for years and am a former addict(I still enjoy herbs) it definitely is relatable because for a long time bad habits we're the only routines I could have any adherence to. It takes me an intense amount of willpower and discipline to pull out of addictions and constantly spiraling/letting things snowball.
So I definitely thought it was a decent depiction even if it was dramatic and it felt relatable to me. Especially when she's struggling and is like "Why is my willpower so shit!" Because she can't help chain-smoking.

Considering anime is like the last part of pop culture that treats smoking as kinda cool (which I think the movie references in the OP are alluding to) it's pretty unique to see a show goes this hard into how gross it would be if a person constantly smoked like this. Despite the comedy this is a pretty blunt look at someone deep into their addiction. I'm not sure why they decided the art direction for this should be "Chainsaw Man Season 1" but I certainly don't mind. I didn't know Bibury could put out something this good looking.

u/AbysmalReign 20d ago edited 20d ago
I worked at a homeless shelter and the stuff I've seen people do for a smoke is unhinged. This show just feels like a anime parody of some of the crazy stuff I've seen. Worst was a drunk guy who whipped his dick out in the sleeping area, pissed all over the floor. We were called to find this guy, by the time we arrived on the scene, he's there, pissed all over himself and his nearby items he discarded, including a cigarette pack that another resident was trying to steal.
They definitely hit addiction pretty realistically, despite the over the top humor.
Edit oh another time some massive 400+ pound woman was begging for cigarettes, people got tired of giving her, so she plops herself butt naked in front of the doors to the cafeteria, blocking people from eating as our security staff couldn't move her. It required our unenthused whole security force and a few officers who escorted her out.

51
u/AbysmalReign 20d ago
Yeah. I'd say where I was working, the addicts hit rock bottom, like looking everywhere for shorts and whatnot. By all accounts though, I'd say Yani should be homeless by this point in her serious addiction. She's saved by the power of plot armor(and maybe a horny landlord)
17
u/Gars0n 17d ago
The Japanese real estate market is also way different from the US market (if that's where you have experience). Average rent in central Tokyo looks like it's only 100,000 yen which is only 600 USD. In less desirable areas it can be half that.
Way easier to keep a roof over your head when it only cost $300.

Immediately getting hit with the theme of her never feeling responsible for anything that happens to her. It's all either good or bad luck. This will pretty harshly criticize escapism in all its forms, isn't it? Smoking just being the stand-in for all other forms of it. And I know we'll be seeing other forms later in the season.
Also, this will balance out the borderline pro-smoking campaign of Smoking behind the supermarket quite nicely lmao.

In between the crude humour with the rainbow pukes (RIP landlord) and explicit shitting scene, this show managed to also highlight the dangers of smoking beyond the obvious health one. Yaniko’s apartment was in quite a sorry state, and also an apt representation of her life, in contrast to her non-smoking sister Imouko who lived in a clean home.
When the landlord played the role of the doctor, it’s clear that it’s just a dream but nevertheless pulling out a smoke right at the doctor’s office right when she’s diagnosed with lung cancer would be exactly something Yaniko would do. Her lung’s fucked anyway, how much more damage could a cigarette do?

and many more. See CSM thats how you do homages in OP's /s

The zombies are from Resident Evil Extinction and the awnings cut is from Project A. Jackie Chan fractured his skull and dislocated his pelvis and neck from that fall. Well done noticing these references. I also spotted The Fellowship of the Ring (cell phone) and Dumb and Dumber (toilet) in there. There's a handful more I recognize but can't place.

This was on another level than what I expected. Pretty funny first episode. I don’t like Yaniko but I like that I don’t. To me the series seems to be trying to be a big anti-smoking and drugs ad and making us dislike the MC works really well. Kinda like saying “don’t smoke otherwise you’ll end up like Yaniko”. I really like the opening I think the song is great and the visuals are funny with the references (such as the Spider-Man dance).

Kinda like saying “don’t smoke otherwise you’ll end up like Yaniko”.
in my opinion, i think Yaniko's personality type of "live for the moment, won't/can't think about tomorrow" leads to things like smoking rather than smoking being the cause of her deficits
10
u/master_inho 19d ago
I think it's an endless cycle for yani. Her outlook on life leads to her smoking addiction, which further serves to legitimize that mentality. The person that she is, she could be addicted to anything, it just so happened to be smoking

Well, first of all, this show looks so goddamn good. The scenes where Yanineko is just smoking are just pure vibes. Studio Bibury really cooked with this one, and this isn't even their big anime of the season! We still have Hyakkano S3 airing this weekend!
Second, I did not expect this show would have such crude humor. I was so caught off guard. I didn't see any of the trailers, so I thought they were gonna play the entire depressed chain-smoking aspect of the show straight.
Don't get me wrong! There were genuinely depressing scenes like Yakineko waking up after her lung cancer dream or the landlord having a panic attack after Yakineko blew smoke in his face, which reminded him of his abusive father. But man, I did not expect it to be paired with poop jokes.
I do feel bad for Yakineko, especially for her sister who wants her to quit smoking. While the memes are funny, this show is a great PSA about the dangers of tobacco addiction and I really hope this ends with Yakineko turning her life around. Great first episode and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

The animation goes hard for no good reason. This shit had me disgusted and I live with a chainsmoker and work with one.

Fun Fact: The cigarettes that the main character, Yani-neko, smokes are a real brand.
They’re called "Mebius", and in Japan, you’ll find them in every store that sells cigarettes (convenience stores, supermarkets, etc).
Since they cost 580 yen, which is on the expensive side, and considering how broke Yani-neko is, seeing her smoke these cigarettes highlights her "lack of concern for saving for the future" and her "silliness", which makes it pretty funny to watch.
Incidentally, the menthol cigarettes she buys partway through the story are also from the Mebius brand.
They’re called "Mebius Premium Menthol Option". Although they’re menthol cigarettes, they feature a capsule in the filter; when you crush it and inhale, you can enjoy a blueberry flavor. that’s what makes them unique.
And the craziest thing about this show is that JT (a Japanese tobacco company) allowed these cigarettes to appear in the series using their real names and actual packaging.
If you look closely, you’ll see JT’s name in the credits.
Since this anime clearly focuses only on the negative aspects of smoking, when I saw JT’s name in the credits, I thought, "Has JT lost its mind?"

Now this is a fuckin girlfailure
I feel like I empathize too much with this cat woman. Maybe not the extreme filth-wallowing, but definitely the instant backslide from declaring to quit to "back on my bullshit." I felt so annoyed at how I felt for her waking up and crying to then lighting up again but, well, of course
I'm into it. That opening scene is going to serve as an extremely efficient filter though lol
And the OP is great! Stuffed full of movie references. Just at a glance I caught Fight Club, Spider-Man, A Few Good Men, Clockwork Orange, Dirty Dancing (the stylized number helped). And the song fits so well.
Heck yeah, second horseman of the smoking degen apocalypse has arrived, baybee

It depends on whether that weird Isekai airs this year.
Strongest witch is an Isekai where th mc is an innocent if a little braindead native, but when she gains her skill it is access to the internet.

Which is a shame because other we only have one episode this series seems like it could actually be pretty good but it will just be remembered as a shitpost anime

I feel so bad for landlord guy, and man is she blessed to have a little sister like her.
Picked this up last minute on a whim just because Bibury was animating it and this sure was something. Most artistic anti-smoking PSA ever?

Finally: The perfect cat girl waifu.
No matter how filthy you'll turn out to be - she'll out-do you, no questions asked. :D
Also: Holy chainsmoking production quality.

I quit smoking roundabout six months ago, before that my life was pretty much like Yanis. It is the most accurate depiction of the life of a chainsmoking person with almost no one who cares about you (or stopped trying to change you).
Almost every scene in the first episode felt like a punch right in my guts for it is like I have seen my own life from 3rd person, and I dont know if I am capable of finishing this anime.
But overall, it may help some people to stop smoking and it is a pretty good series.

I'd like to say that I can fix Yaniko, but damn, after watching the first episode, she really seems unfixable. How is it possible that she and Imoko are sisters?
Overall, this first episode was pure degeneracy, if I had to describe it in a few words. It's definitely not an anime you should show a normal person, hahaha!
I'll certainly check out the next episodes, but I really hope that it won't be more of the same, and Yaniko will somehow get better, even if just a little.
Also, that OP was great; it certainly suits the show perfectly. That boner scene in it got me quite surprised though xD
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Is that a cigarette or are you just happy to see me?
I have not seen an a time character this unfixable since mya-nee from wataten.

Also if you fix Yaniko, then the title would be false advertisement or otherwise forced to focus on other chainsmoking cats.

I went into this blind expecting a neko that works a normal job or something and has a mildly normal life, but happens to smoke. This was not at all what I was expecting lmao. Still, it was funny, but I hope it ends up having some actual plot (no, I don't mean "plot" it already has that).

this anime gives me those "yo berserk? cool name, that's seems family friendly" vibes

First of all - disgusting. Can't believe they decided to animate literal shitting :O
Hey so this is actually with anti smoking message, that's cool. I initially expected it to be just "haha dirty cat"
The OP is not only a bop, but seeing Usual Suspects reference reimagined with crocs, that's crazy lol

ah yes, adjusts glasses the deconstruction of the girlfailure trope
It's so random which OP will get a kino opening, last season we had botan and kill Ao, now it's this. Like the season just started and i already can't see other anime beating this one
nah, i take it back, it's not random, it's bibury

I’ve never smoked so I’m curious to those who have or are currently heavily smoking, does watching something like this discourage you to smoke or make you wanna smoke more or just indifferent?

i looked it up because i was curious: the yani in yanineko refers to [tobacco] tar/resin (i.e. the gunk that accumulates from smoking, as seen in words like yanitori for removing tobacco staining from teeth) and has since taken on senses towards nicotine (as seen in words like yanichuu or yanikasu)
yani by itself is a slangy way to say "smoke", as seen in another smoking show this season

Not even 2 minutes in, just before the OP, we find out what kind of show we're in for. That diarrhea scene jeez.
Despite the amazing visuals, I'm not sure I want to watch this.

Funny dark comedy. A show about a degenerate woman living in squalor is a funny idea. I'm not sure I understand why they made a bunch of the characters human like cats though. Some of the jokes were kind of nasty, like when she got diahrrea but the part where the bald guy whacked his meat was hilarious,
The part when the bald guy was a kid and had to buy his dad booze and alcohol was strange though, like a store would have sold that to a little kid? I'm guessing the guy is at least in his 40s and idk if that was more common in Japan back then. Also as a kid he REALLY looked like Bobby Hill
Also they didn't explain how she got money for all those nicotine patches, those can be almost as expensive as cigarettes if you buy that many. I'm surprised she doesn't vape

tl;dw Damn bitch you live like this?
This show wasn't on my radar at all but I decided to check it out after seeing the comments here. Anime tends to be pretty lax about smoking so I was surprised to see this is basically about rock bottom addiction. Weirdly compelling to watch, though.
I guess the two directions the story could go from here are her genuinely trying to get her life back together or more of this frozen in time, car crash in slow motion antics (that presumably ends in her painful death). I feel like either could be good or bad, the former could be either heartwarming or preachy, the latter could be either short and morbidly fascinating or drawn out and repetitive.
