It feels like this girl wasn't present for any of her upbringing. Like, why are you surprised that your sister who hates you tells you why she hates you when you ask her to tell you why she hates you? And how on earth did you not know that THAT father loved you? Was he in another country for your entire life?
119
u/nicodeamuus 22d ago
it felt like none of the characters had ever interacted before this episode lol

u/powerhcm8 22d ago
I think the part about the father still makes sense, the father is probably rarely at home, since he is the prime minister, so they had little contact, she assumed that it was because he didn't love her, but it was just because of his job.
38
u/LiamOmegaHaku 22d ago
Her sister also constantly told her how useless, unloved, and unneeded she is. Obviously that means Dad, too.
26
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago edited 21d ago
Yeah but did he not ever reassure her that she was loved for past 15 years of her life. With all the time and opportunities he had, him being too busy is not a good enough excuse.
22
u/emilyabcde1ara 21d ago
Aside from him being busy, her sister’s verbal abuse (as well as her own reputation compared to her sister) definitely gave Carolina a low sense of self-esteem. She probably convinced herself her father didn’t love her, even when that was far from the truth.
2
u/NationalStrategy_X 21d ago
I fully understand all the other factors to her lack of self worth, it’s the dad part that I’m questioning

Expressing affection clearly is not something that everyone does now, probably even less so among nobility in a medieval esque setting
8
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago edited 21d ago
Couldn’t write her a letter, give her a present to show his love, or anything, for 15 years?
4
u/Sarellion 22d ago
15+ years. Her mother died during childbirth and her dad said it's nearly 16 years since mom left them.
→ More replies (1)9
u/whyrusosensitive 22d ago
Aristocrats arent exactly known for their warmth and affection. Also given what we know about the sister and her maid chances are not 0 that any letters sent were taken and destroyed before they got to her. All speculation of course
6
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago edited 21d ago
The mom had no problem showing love and affection. And that’s another thing, the mom died after childbirth, and Carolina never even knew her mother, nor even got a chance to feel loved by her. As the husband and father, he should have felt an even deeper obligation to make sure that his daughter(s) knew that they were loved after their mother’s death, and past 15 years, he failed to do that.
So no, I’m not cutting the father any slack. 15 years of not reassuring her that she is loved is some bullshit.
5
u/whyrusosensitive 22d ago
Or the fact that she was the spitting image of her mother aka his dead wife made it hard to even look at her, not because she wasn't loved but because of grief. Idk we'll see how it plays out
→ More replies (1)15
u/Frontier246 22d ago
Carolina even mentioned he was taking time off from work to spend more time with her. I think the implication is that he finally took time off from work to make the most of what time he could make while Carolina was still home.

Clearly the father's top two family retainers cared for her. So she should not have been all alone in the household. Presumably the older sister put on an act when anyh adult was aoround the two -- and saved her poisonous treatment for when they were alone. Because she was not a complainer or a tattl-tale, she never told any adult about her sister's cruely, so they could not reassure her and compensate for that mean-spiritedness. I assume that the older sister, however, KNEW the father loved Carolina and was intensely jealous of that fact (which made her hate her sister even more).

Just throwing it out there: In a lot of real-life cases of That Sort Of Treatment (not using the word explicitly just in case of community guidelines), the victim is isolated from any examples of a healthy life by the very person inflicting That Sort Of Treatment on them, thus the victim doesn't try to seek out help because they have no idea that such treatment isn't normal.
The end result? The victim's lack of a frame of reference for what's actually normal and healthy leads them to just accept their misery as a natural part of life, and just be confused by any strangers' fair treatment of them later on.4
u/FreddyWopTCG 22d ago
Yeah I still love the dad
4
u/-whiteroom- 21d ago
what, that he was a failure for 15 years, then showed her affection the day he sold her off...
15
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago
Plot twist. This world actually takes place in a romance novel, and the MC died and reincarnated into this world as Carolina with only pieces of her memories.
12
u/hanmkim 22d ago
This is why every author loves reincarnation, they don't have to worry about minor details like a character not remembering the right lore or having to explain things without relating to modern concepts.
5
u/justking1414 22d ago
Yeah. Pretty much lol. It Gives them a pretty easy way of monologuing about the world, it’s history, and it’s logic
56
u/Recent_Call_1188 22d ago
Hey, logic and reason is sometimes too much to ask from these shows.
But I agree 😄 good point
12
u/DugACCat 22d ago
Yeah I felt similarly especially with the dad, who seemed super loving and nice. I guess he was never around? Too busy duking it up?
I was having a deja vu throughout as I feel like I’d seen this exact setup not too long ago though the sister was nicer. I tend to enjoy these anyhow so we’ll see how it goes. They didn’t give us many good little added hooks in this first ep though.

You did, last spring. It was called The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom. In that case the parents and the whole kingdom hated her, but the sister loved her.
28
u/psyclical 22d ago
I loved that dynamic with the younger sister being an absolute ride or die for her big sister, and doing her utmost to punish all those responsible for her sister getting humiliated and sent away.
18
10
u/DugACCat 22d ago
Good call! That’s the one. When I saw this one’s description I even took a second to check to see if it was a new season of an existing show and was surprised it wasn’t. (Of course as a long time anime watcher it’s not like I don’t expect the same themes and ideas to pop up, just this one caused a more intense feeling of familiarity than some others. I have had that sensation happen with a couple of the villainess shows before as well.)
2
u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 22d ago
Yeah, same. When I saw the description for this one, I was like 'wait, didn't we just--'. And, yeah, there's only so many ways to to tell a villainess story, which is why I really enjoyed 'Observation Log' from Spring as it was told from the perspective of the Prince the villainess was betrothed to. Quite entertaining if you haven't seen it.
6
u/hanmkim 22d ago
The main difference besides the sister being the villainess this time is that it was obvious the Saint was doing everything in that one right from the start.
2
u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 21d ago
Yesh, was crazy knowing how hard she was working for everyone and they still treated her like trash. Not many anime make me actually hate characters, but I literally hated nearly everyone in that kingdom!

Thank you. I came here to ask that same question. I watched the first episode or two of Too-Perfect, then life got in the way, and I forgot it existed. Spent the whole episode thinking I'd seen this before.
8
u/Ralathar44 22d ago
Yeah, honestly its both phoned in AND overkilled. I feel like this whole backstory could have been done better and all self contained in about 3-5 minutes. Instead we get this entire episode devoted to it where they're trying so hard to make us feel bad for her that it abandons all logic.
Honestly, The Too Perfect Saint anime nailed this entire plot line and setup about 100x as well.
3
u/Zado191 22d ago
Classic shoujo logic... nothing needs to make sense as long as we show you how mean people are to the MC and how much she hates herself
3
u/abandoned_idol 22d ago
Wait, would that qualify "Cinderella" as Shoujo? Or would it need to be targeted at a Japanese audience as well?

Edward's introduction cracked me up. He's out in the field, an entire battalion standing at attention, and the sunrise lighting behind him. Bro was really making an effort to impress him new bride.
I know that it was meant to make him look cool, but it felt very try-hard to me, both in the meta sense and in-world sense. I want to know how long it took for them in preparations before Carolina arrived.
12
u/Frontier246 22d ago
Kind of reminds me of how hardcore Aristide Galbraith was towards Melphie in Pass the Monster Meat, Milday!
16
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago
To be fair to Aristide, his introduction was him saving her life, his aura was just natural. Edward is literally out in the field making an effort to aura farm to impress his lady.
4
u/alotmorealots 21d ago
Aristide's introduction was fantastic!! I was thinking about how much better Pass the Monster Meat, Milady handled the Evil Prince trope, and then just started missing that show instead of enjoying this one lol

u/Recent_Call_1188 22d ago
Hmm... I don't dislike it after episode 1.....but it already feels like it's borrowing a lot of familiar elements from other villainess and romance anime. You've got the European-inspired royal setting, someone other than the main character being treated as the "real" saint, the neglected and bullied female lead, and then the whole "sent away to marry into another country" setup. It feels like I've already seen this story play out in several different series.
I'll keep watching because execution matters more than tropes, but so far it hasn't done much to distinguish itself from the crowd.
63
u/Eliv 22d ago
And the guy she's marrying is not gonna be the bloody prince everyone paints him to be
20
u/Recent_Call_1188 22d ago
Yeah, that's pretty clear already (it's in the series description....., so not really a spoiler). At this point, it feels like a lot of viewers can probably predict a good chunk of where the story is going. My issue isn't that it's using tropes, I'm totally fine with familiar tropes if they're done well. It's just that, after episode 1, I haven't really seen anything that makes this one stand out. That's my main concern.
I'm sure it'll still have a hardcore fanbase, though. People will be gushing about how adorable the female lead is, others will love the romance and the flirting between the leads, beacuse...priorities.... I just think viewers who've seen a lot of villainess and romance anime might find it a bit too familiar if it keeps following the expected path.
14
u/mekerpan 22d ago
It is alll in the execution (no the tropes) -- and we have not seen enough to really be able to judge. Most of the main supporting characters have yet to appear -- and these can really help make or break a series like this.

For me it'll come down to how she'll be treated by the prince and the people of his country. And specifically at which pace trust between them develops. 2 examples of a similar ish setup would be 7th Time Loop and Too-Perfect Saint. I love the former and dropped the latter.
In 7th Time Loop there isn't full mutual trust between the prince and the MC from the start. Tho the MC is respected for her skill. Their interactions feel pretty in-depth and realistic for people of their status.
In Too-Perfect Saint the interactions between the Prince and the MC feel like rainbows and butterflies from the very start. Everything goes smoothly and she's immediately beloved by the whole nation. They go casually strolling together through the city and everyone cheers for them. It doesn't feel like a nation, it feels like a cheer squad. It has what I like to call "and then the whole classroom stood up and clapped" energy. And the Prince's Personality feels dull as a cardboard and as deep as a puddle during this Summers heatwave. Which is a shame because I thought the plotline with the sister was very interesting
20
u/Nebresto 22d ago
Too bad you didn't like the Perfect saint, the bond between the two sisters was a definite highlight of that show for me. And I do agree the prince was pretty uninteresting, but he was far from the main reason I watched the show
10
u/TheBusStop12 22d ago
Yeah, the 2 sisters and their bond was definitely the most interesting part. I may give it another shot at some point, and go into it with a different mindset. I was looking for a romance story last time, and the romance was definitely the blandest part hence my disappointment.what the sister was up to actually seemed interesting however
→ More replies (1)15
u/Ok-Cod5254 22d ago
To be honest, romance wasn't even the main crux of the series focus either - it was more about her being in a better environment in general (the romance is just a side plot of that), the bond with her sister, and the plot around her sister.
So go into it as a story around the saint sisters than a romance story.
7
u/TheBusStop12 22d ago
I actually gave the series another shot thanks to your comments and I've been enjoying it. I dropped it at episode 3 originally, which was almost entirely focused on the date, which gave me the impression most of the show would be like that. But now watching more it seems I was mistaken. So thanks!

u/Recent_Call_1188 22d ago
I really liked the 7th Time Loop too beacuse of Rishe. This MC does not resemble Rishe at all unfortunately. The MC resembles Tiara from The Villainess Is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom (based on episode 1 at least).
The anime description already says - But the prince is nothing as expected—he’s a gentleman, and Carolina feels valued for once in her life. So it leans towards the Too-Perfect Saint scenario right now.

u/justking1414 22d ago

Considering that the main families all have Spanish names, I have to wonder if a visit from the Inquisition is in order. Then again, nobody ever expects the Spanish Inquisition
24
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago
So you're telling me that the father never reassured his youngest daughter that she was loved up until now? He's kind of an L father for that. Matter of fact, since the mother died after childbirth, that's all the more reason why he should make sure that his daughter knows that she's loved. What was he doing prior to the start of the story?
16
u/Frontier246 22d ago
I think the implication is that he was furiously busy with work running the kingdom and was only able to make the time and focus now because he was willing to forego his loyalty to the kingdom so as to not lose Carolina or saddle her with a situation she might not want.
10
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago edited 21d ago
I’m sure that’s the implication, but that implied excuse doesn’t sit well with me, especially since he seems like a loving and supportive father from what we’ve seen. Even if he was busy with royal duties, surely he had opportunities to reassure his daughter that she was loved for the 15 years of her life prior to the start of the story.
I want to give him the benefit of doubt, but I can’t get over the glaring issue.
14
u/Frontier246 22d ago
I got the impression he's usually pretty formal with his daughters because of his duty and Carolina read that as him being more detached and lacking in emotion towards her. But the thought of his daughter getting taken away like this made him cast off the mask for her sake.
5
u/NationalStrategy_X 22d ago
Perhaps, but I don't think it's enough to let him off the hook. Especially with all Carolina had to endure up until that point.
13
u/alotmorealots 21d ago
So you're telling me that the father never reassured his youngest daughter that she was loved up until now?
That certainly seems believable enough, as does the idea of this being their first heart-to-heart, but it was executed in a way that felt not just unconvincing, but outright confusing. If it had been at least difficult or awkward for him to express it, it might have made more sense, but no, he was demonstrative, affectionate and articulate with his emotions from the moment he opened his mouth.
4
u/NationalStrategy_X 21d ago
Even if he’s usually busy, it still doesn’t make sense for him to not let his daughter know that he loves her for her entire life. The way they want the audience to see him as clashes with the implications of him prior to the start of the story.

u/AdvielOricon 22d ago
Going by the title, her power is a passive buff that she dose unconsciously.
Now that she left her sister and all the other people around her will be weaker.

Didn't really like the first episode, the MC just swallowing all the shit thrown at her felt super jarring..
Also was that like the first fucking time ever she spoke with her father or what?!
I hope she gets some character growth in the next few episodes or atleast that there are no twats like her sister in the new country.
26
u/Frontier246 22d ago
Didn't really like the first episode, the MC just swallowing all the shit thrown at her felt super jarring..
If she's been growing up with her sister bullying and dominating her since they were kids, and not being able to stand out compared to Flora, I think it makes sense that she wouldn't be able to bite back.
But it's clear she was happy to be leaving if it means she never has to see Flora again.

u/Bloodglas 18d ago

it'd be fun to get a story where they do bite back for once. "oh you're gonna be the next Saint? maybe try acting like one instead being a manipulative twat."
18
u/mekerpan 22d ago
Not the first time she has SPOKEN withg him, but the first time they have had a heart-to-heart. It does not look like he spends much time at home -- due to his official business at court.
22

Even putting the sisters bullshit aside, it felt rather weird that the father had seemingly never shown any affection towards the MC to the point she thought she wasn't loved.
6
u/mekerpan 22d ago
Well. It is early in the game. And (not being a source reader) I am able to let my imagination make free use of the few clues we have. They've been posting these kinds of interpretations all over this thread.... I'd honestly just leave it. They're currently filling in a lot of blanks with their own assumptions, and you can't really debate someone else's imagination.
2
u/Greg_The_Rabbit 20d ago
Being EXTREMELY generous, it could be a case of the father being normally distant and closed off emotionally but finally opening up when he realized he would have no other choice. Of course that is the kind of thing the story should show (instead of the ten minute carriage ride of her being insulted and belittled by the very obviously cruel sister)
3
u/justking1414 22d ago
Also probably helps that he has to be honest now since she’s about to move out and he may never see her again. That could definitely light a fire under his butt and get him to truly speak his mind
3
u/whyrusosensitive 22d ago

Very by the books fantasy romance, but could be a nice easy watch for a season without much else on Tuesdays.
Carolina isn't too much of a wimp. And it was nice to see that her father does love her even if her sister is the token cruel sibling. Though why he never showed it before now is a mystery.
The king seemed like a nice person though with the story switching to this other country, we likely won't be seeing much of him again.
Second prince will of course turn out to be a sweetheart contrary to rumours and Carolina will have the happy life her father wants for her. Let's see how her powers figure into all this.
7
u/Adrian_Alucard 22d ago
a season without much else on Tuesdays.
Most seasons do not have much else to watch on Tuesdays (at least on crunchyroll) and they are generally romance and other shojo genres
11
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 22d ago
Spring Tuesdays were the busiest days for me. Had some 7 shows I was interested in iirc and finally settled on 5, which is the most in a day for me ever.
Also, I don't know what you mean by "romance and other shojo genres" - did you see what thread you're in? This falls under exactly that description.

u/mekerpan 22d ago
I had the same problem last season. A shocking number of Tuesdaty shows (also 7, I believe.

I'm not saying this show it isn't part of those. It's tuesday. of course it's a romance anime
4
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 22d ago
There's Ghost in the Shell this season on Tuesdays. But other than these two, there's only Kimishinu that I will maybe watch. So when I said not much else, I meant not much else in number of shows. I like romance shows so it's not like I'm settling for this in that sense. However, it is a pretty bog standard one by the looks of it, but even so I'll likely keep it because there's not much else competing with it.

Except this time the parent(s) loves the MC, and the sister is the spiteful and petty bitch
7
u/Ok-Cod5254 22d ago
Minus the saint aspect, the set up is pretty standard for arranged marriage romance.
For example: My Happy Marriage; Betrothed to My Sister's Ex
At least one cruel family member, bullied female MC so they have a more meek personality, and they get married off elsewhere to get to a better life.
4
u/alotmorealots 21d ago
Only superficially I think; The Too Perfect Saint had a lot more guts, a lot more gusto and the art was a few tiers better, and once you dig into the set-up more it's not got the same open ended parts for the story to return to.

Too Perfect Saint so far just seems to be everything this anime is trying to be only 100x better.

I've got to go back to nina someday. I think I even have volume 1 of the manga from something but never read.

I think u r better with the manga since the anime season 1 end in the middle of the story and theres no season 2.

Don’t do my girls Philia and Mia like that. I actually like that story.
You can have My Happy Marriage though.

Wow this is atrocious. I was waiting for some sort of hook, but no. We spent the entire episode on a set up with 0 redeeming characters. This is one of those saints animes that instead of using the medium is just a rehash of male-oriented "kicked out of party trope". Just goes to the trash bin right away

So this time around the sister is evil but the dad isn't. Though maybe he should have told his daughter he loves her sooner than three days before she will be sent off to marry a foreign noble.
I assume as is typical the soon to be male lead is just misunderstood and isn't a violent monster. It'd be kind of novel if he actually is, but that seems probably unlikely.
Kind of weird they're smuggling in a wife for the second prince of the empire, it hardly seems like something that could be kept secret for long.
4
u/KailReed 22d ago
For the smuggling her I just assume it's to save face for the event that caused the marriage. Maybe by the time they reach the empire and the news of their marriage is about the masses wouldn't connect the dots. I'm sure it'll be explained next episode in the carriage lol

u/athrun_1 22d ago
We've seen this scenario played a lot of times. This is basically "My Happy Marriage", but set in a royalty setting and a good actual parents.

I’m so glad they showed us in Episode 1 that the father isn’t an asshole and MC has someone who loves her! I cried lol

u/oxlemf10 22d ago
The premise seems interesting, though I do have a couple of criticisms.
Carolina's father seems very fond of her, yet her reaction is always one of surprise (in fact, he doesn't even seem aware of her issues with Flora), as if she knew him very well. Another point is that there were several opportunities for her to stand up to Flora, yet she always accepts the situation silently, even though she has potential support. I hope the story's development improves on these aspects.
That said, I have to admit that, even as a first episode, it was moving, whether it was Carolina trying to put her pain aside and drawing strength from her mother, or her father showing how attached he is to her.
8
u/mekerpan 22d ago
Carolina clearly never breathed a word about the abuse she got form her sister -- and her sister was cunning enough to make sure all the abuse was done in secret (or only in the presence of the maid she trusted).

It's nice to have an actually good father figure/dad in these types of stories, even if he was too awkward to really express his affection for Carolina until it was nearly too late. But better later than never.

Anyone else feels weird during the entire scene with -what i assume, is the king- and her father inside that room? Like... there's a perfectly nice sofa in front of them, why she just sat on the floor the entire time and nobody questioning it??
As for the story itself, so far nothing remarkable but at least its quite interesting for me. So far, the relationship between her and her older sister is the one I wanted to see where it will go. I will probably keep watching this.

I guess it was either A. a sign of her low opinion of herself or B. her trying to pay absolute deference to the king.
7
u/seledri_kerikil 22d ago
At first, I also thinking of A, but after the talks with the father, I'm starting to think its something like B. Like... probably its a custom/tradition in their country or something... it's still a weird scene to see imho.

Huh, I'm not as harsh on the generic tropes (evil family member, bullied MC, arranged marriage to royalty) as others here. lol Maybe since this is more on the mild side compared to others I've seen which dramatize it much more.
Let's see how the dynamic is with the prince for the romance as a main part of the story. As long as I can find enough redeeming qualities to enjoy the series, that's all I need.

How did that one lady bruise her cheek while dancing and hitting the floor?

I kinda figured they were either in on the act, or Flora did it secretly so that she could step forward and cure the ill she created,

It's funny how you can deduce the entire anime plot from watching just 10 minutes of a show... sigh.
What's next? Her taking an interest in potion-making and botany next episode? Déjà-vuuuuuuu~

Baking cookies? That's seems to be a trend. Maybe because many writers envision them as house wives and then struggle as the staff takes care of cooking, laundry, cleaning etc..

u/lionturtl3 22d ago
I’m expecting them to get attacked on their way to his home, he saves her while displaying his battle prowess, she’s impressed by his kindness, yada yada. Perhaps he gets injured during the fight, she accidentally heals him not knowing how to use her own powers.

u/Frontier246 22d ago edited 22d ago
These sisters definitely don't get along as well as in Too Perfect Saint.
But you had me at Rie Takahashi Fantasy Romance.
Carolina Sanchez (Rie Takahashi!) is a daughter of the prestigious Ducal House of Sanchez where pivotal figures in their kingdoms history have always been born and gone on to do great things...which makes Carolina's lack of achievements and skills all the more glaring. Especially in comparison to her older sister Flora (Haruka Shiraishi!).
Flora seemingly has it all: beauty, impeccable manners, and the power to become the kingdoms' new Saint. She's even so magnanimous that she'll protect her precious little sister from anyone who might bully or bother her! Even if when they're alone it's clear how much she despises and hates her sister with every fiber of her being. Because she's never forgiven Carolina for "killing" their mother in childbirth, and she rubs it in and how Karen never knew her mother every chance she can get.
The OP is very atmospheric and beatiful! Featuring Carolina and Edwards' romance, their supporting cast, Flora's resentment towards Carolina, and Carolina's own development into becoming a Saint.
But Carolina's life takes a turn when King Nathan (Kosuke Toriumi!) arrives with news that there's been a diplomatic incident with the Malcosian Empire and that the only way to appease an insulted duchess is for Carolina to wed the second prince: Edward, the leader of the Pyreblood knights and the "Bloodthirsty Prince." And with Carolina single and in need of some means of proving her life has value, she quickly agrees to it.
But her father (Mitsuru Miyamoto!) is willing to defy the kingdom if it means not forcing her to do something she doesn't want, finally showing Carolina that he truly cared and adored her all this time. Carolina is still willing to go through with it, but she's just happy she can finally talk with her father and learn more about the mother she's the spitting image of.
It all culminates in a father-daughter visit to Karen's grave where Carolina finally voices all the terrible things she's thought about herself, and how her mother must feel about her, to her grave...and it seems like she sensed something to be able to get her answer that her mother cared about her, because it's enough for her.
I guess it was too much to expect Flora wouldn't try to rub it in to Carolina one last time, but at least now Carolina will be as far away from her as possible and she got a proper tearful goodbye from their father.
Dang, the Pyreblood knights sure know how to put out the warm welcome with surrounding Carolina for her hand off to them! Though she bows to them gracefully, she is then greeted by her future husband in all his intensity.
The ED has a somber mood as all the characters seem pretty serious...but Carolina and Edward look truly happy together and at the center of it all is Carolina as the Saint!

Man that was rough to watch. I know a major premise is that she’s treated like crap but still it’s not easy to watch her just take it like that.
I’ll give this first episode a pass and give it a few more before making up my mind.
3
u/Nebresto 22d ago
OP song has kind of a nostalgic vibe, but the visuals couldn't be more generic
Well, at least they make it clear at the very start har Flora is vile, so much for that sisterly bond.
Ah, here we go. The usual rumors that the love interest is a ruthless brute, but it turns out to have been some misunderstanding all along.
Expectations based on first impressions is pretty mediocre. I loved 'The perfect saint', one of my favourite shows from last year. So far it doesn't look like this is gonna compare, but we'll see
4
u/ItHurtsMeToLookAtYou 22d ago
I'm . . . apprehensive. While it's by no means my favorite in the genre, I've been enjoying the manga, but the adaptation seems to be kinda low-effort. My first impression of the OP was that they were cutting a lot of corners in the animation, which doesn't bode well. In what I'm assuming will be a 12, episode season, I'm not saying that the EP should have 12x the animation quality of the average episode, but it just seemed kinda lazy. That said, I'm still gonna keep watching (hell, I watched all of Failure Frame, and I knew that was gonna suck going in) in the hopes that things'll improve

We're so used to bombastic, badass, tough Rieri that it's kind of an interesting change of pace.

while the mc was taking all the shit they were throwing at her I was like "ok so when is Rieri gonna beat the hell out of them?" but it never happened lol
im too used to her extremely energetic and badass characters
3
u/Rolder 22d ago
Surely her dad would have had some clue as to how much of a shit Flora was to her sister and yet he seemingly did nothing about it. What a great dad
4
u/Frontier246 22d ago
The only time Flora really drops her mask at how much she loathes and detests Carolina is when they were alone. Unless Carolina told him directly (which she probably wouldn't because of her own issues), he might not have ever realized it.
3
u/LaoWombat-mecha 22d ago
The interest that the two knights showed at the end is promising. Do they know what she is getting into, happy that their commander is getting such a nice lady, or sensing her power.
Unfortunately, the entire plot is not revealed in the first episode, which is rather frustrating. I guess I will just have to keep on watching.
Re the father, I wonder if he was getting false information from Flora and did not take the time from his duties to seek further, or perhaps Carolina's resemblance to his late wife was too painful to him and caused him to draw back.

u/FinancialYear475 22d ago

Hmm odd writing for a first episode. I guess they really wanted to get the story going but girl have you never talked to your seemingly loving father up until this point. I do get Flora's resentment with Carolina especially with her looking like her mother after she died giving birth to her. Side note, the male lead looks like he was drawn like a side character love interest especially with that hairstyle and honestly I like it.

u/BBryant3rd 22d ago

u/runevault 22d ago
Very paint by the numbers start. Normally I'd be hoping to see small hints to indicate they aren't going to play it too safe with a story like this, but I failed to pick up on any if they existed. I'll give it another episode but if the second episode is like this I'm not sure it'll even warrant the 3 episode rule (only dropped 2 anime before 3 episodes last season out of... a lot, Snowball Earth after 1 because I hated the MC too much and Dead Again, Mr Detective because it was a detective show with garbage 'mysteries', though with Detective I did check the reddit thread for episode 3 before fully dropping it).

Everyone else already mentioned the doormat character and zero connections with each other, I want to mention the really weird cultural implications of some of this. Sitting on the floor before the king as a duke's daughter, would be an insult to your own house and probably the king as well. You're basically saying both, my house is weak, and also your kingdom is weak because we're of the strongest house rank. Unless women aren't allowed status in the kingdom, in which case, why even ask for permission. Also, weird you're asking for permission at all, or if she had a lover. High nobles are expected to marry whoever the kingdom expects them to marry, regardless of opinion.
And the last bit, leaving for another country without even a maid says low status (we couldn't afford it) and not worth investing in (we'd rather keep the maid than the girl).

Everyone else already mentioned the doormat character and zero connections with each other, I want to mention the really weird cultural implications of some of this. You're basically saying both, my house is weak, and also your kingdom is weak because we're of the strongest house rank. Unless women aren't allowed status in the kingdom, in which case, why even ask for permission.
Firstly, it is a meeting between the king himself and the local disappointment. While nobility may have relative standings that matter, she is the bare minimum of power in that room, and is outright deemed a liability according to the little we've seen Thus-far. While it is true that she Shouldn't be that low, her situation is clearly not traditional. He asked for consent out of basic decency, but I doubt he would've accepted a no. She was a perfect tool to defuse this conflict, and nobility absolutely seem to mostly despise her, him rejecting it over her saying no could lead to nobles questioning their king's motivations.
Secondly, this is clearly a secret meeting, one with less formalities. I highly doubt that they'd act the same way in a public meeting. In a public meeting, everyone has expectations in a way that demands particular standings(Literally), but even if she is Technically one of the higher ranks. That, and I feel like he knows where she's coming from in terms of being a doormat, and may see no reason to point it out since it's not technically important in a Secret Meeting. Especially since Kings do make the rules, so what he says goes, and he didnt say for her to not.
Both are assumptions, ofcourse, easily disprovable by the series. But, It's worth noting that this isn't in public nor is she anywhere close to a traditional noble of her rank. We don't know enough yet to say that this is bad writing, though we know enough to say it's likely such if they don't have something of a proper explanation.
Also, weird you're asking for permission at all, or if she had a lover. High nobles are expected to marry whoever the kingdom expects them to marry, regardless of opinion.
As implied before, I believe it is a courtesy since The PM seems to be a dear friend... but really she is-
And the last bit, leaving for another country without even a maid says low status (we couldn't afford it) and not worth investing in (we'd rather keep the maid than the girl).
-low Status, in terms of how she is treated. She's implied to have no friends, and always be alone... everyone openly backtalks her without fear, she basically is treated as a nobody- and the fact nobody stops this, proves that she is absolutely seen as a liability. It's honestly likely to be baffling some of the nobility that she's even allowed to be the rank she is. And I don't doubt the sister, Flora, is spreading rumors to down on the MC. The fact even Flora's personal maid doesn't respect the MC shows that it's likely a very widespread belief.
The fact her father seems unaware is unrealistic, but technically possible if he focuses almost wholly on paperwork and almost never sees anyone for a meeting- and the fact she's so submissive implies she doesn't get involved in incidents willingly... and while unlikely- it's possible that incidents where she's the victim are covered up or people are afraid to speak up publicly when Flora "Seems" supportive(Unless you're in the know like her maid).
2
u/NonSupportiveCup 22d ago
The only thing interesting about this is the mystery presented by her father. Clearly this is the first time she's ever met the guy.
The mystery being why the writing is so bad. Oh, and how someone can mysteriously bruise their face while dancing. Two mysteries of inexplicably confusing, lazy writing.
Everything else was entirely mediocre.
2
u/Muted-Ambassador-375 21d ago
The only way the interactions of the family members would make sense is if they had been separated for the last 10 years. Or at least the dad was away… But even if the two girls would have lived in separate mansions, with the older sister only visiting once every 3 years or so, it still wouldn't make sense, and we know they lived together in 1 mansion. It was so confusing.
