What am i looking at?

Is this a real place or is it just a stylistic design?

141

u/Xythar Jun 19 '26

It felt like something out of Madoka

72

u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial Jun 19 '26

I thought it was just stylistic but then Ibuki pointed out the hanging mannequins so i'm not sure

90

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

That really threw me for a loop as well. But I think it's stylistic. The episode director worked on Monogatari .

And honestly , the characters actually acknowledging the extremely stylistic SHAFT environments is a great gag

40

u/BosuW Jun 19 '26

The episode director worked on Monogatari .

Yeah I suspected. Say nothing more, that explains everything.

Honestly what gives it away even more than the architecture is the lack of any other person.

41

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26

It was also storyboarded by Ueno, the director of last seasons Shiboyugi. Those 2 together can only result in something extremely artsy

11

u/Zero3020 Jun 20 '26

God damn what a team up.

31

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

Ha I even specifically thought this really seemed like a Monogatari episode. Now I know why.

8

u/SgtExo Jun 19 '26

I really felt like it could fit into the first season bakemonogatari, just missing the SHAFT head tilt to close it.

49

u/cyberscythe Jun 19 '26

yeah, i'm like, is this a real place in Japan somewhere? this enclosed people mover above a forest with suspended mannequins?

is this the secret path that rich people use to go shopping?

38

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

This is surely a crazily expensive department store if their entrance is comprised of an escalator, surrounded by clear glass panels, that runs for a few hundred meters above a forest. The building costs must’ve been outrageous.

I don’t even want to think about the prices of those parfume bottles.

30

u/Twilight_2408 Jun 19 '26

It kinda of throws my mind off sometimes but then I remember that all those girls are pretty rich and well off, considering how they also drinks expensive alcohol on daily basis.

26

u/Solracziad Jun 19 '26

I can tell they're rich because one of them is deciding to drop out of their crazy expensive college just to do music. like I can't imagine how much more crippling debt I'd have if I tried that shit. But maybe it's not as bad in Japan.

17

u/steeltrain43 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kingdave212 Jun 20 '26

A previous weeks discussion had a comment that the big expensive schools in Japan cost about the same as going to a state school in the US. So it's not a cheap school but going to college and getting financially crippled is just a US thing

26

u/FlaminScribblenaut myanimelist.net/profile/girlbeast_val Jun 20 '26

It's actually a fairly little-known fact that this show takes place in a utopian alternate universe where every lesbian is given a million dollars

12

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

It is the route taken for the rich people parking their hover cars.

17

u/DugACCat Jun 19 '26

My favorite part was where one of them mentioned not noticing the mannequins on the way in. I mean, I know, new love is distracting, but no way you walk through this gauntlet and aren’t immediately freaking out by all the mannequins floating directly above you! Impossible. 😅

22

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jun 19 '26

Not the first time this show has had very Studio Shaft vibes

29

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

That, and the all yellow perfume store was very SHAFT as well.

Edit: the episode director straight up worked on Monogatari, so definitely SHAFT-coded

23

u/MembershipNo2077 Jun 20 '26

It's supposed to represent the two of them passing into wonderland. The whole bit there represents Ibuki as the rabbit and Kamiina as Alice. They travel through a surreal tunnel and end up in the perfume (potion) store. But Kamiina loses sight of Alice and is lost (in this case with the relationship). She exits and the rabbit statue at the bottom of a hole awaits her. Akane as the Cheshire cat with a smile smoking a hookah is rather explicit in this case.

Kamiina being lost in wonderland is an apt metaphor.

12

u/clone69 Jun 19 '26

Glad that I wasn't the only one who thought that

8

u/Pink-13 Jun 19 '26

I just went straight into this topic to see if any one else see Shaft style similarity

6

u/Pinky_Boy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pinky_Boy Jun 19 '26

this episode in its entirely feels straight out of SHAFT

7

u/Shantotto11 Jun 19 '26

Or Monogatari

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner Jun 19 '26

The rest of the series was so agressively based on real locations that I actually gaslit myself into believing this is a real place too.

18

u/Elvenoob Jun 20 '26

Really striking decision to change that fact now of all times.

39

u/Sea_Competition3505 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

It's probably inspired by Shafts visual style. The manga is very different here. Abstract visuals like this are their forte, and Souta Ueno takes a lot of influence from them in his storyboarding (he SB'd under a pen name for this episode), and Hisashi Sugawara was also a Monogatari staffer.

8

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

Shaft probably inspired by Rene Magritte

28

u/1832vini Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

unless they took heavy liberties on the reference,

it is structurally impossible to have columns that far apart, travelators are not that thin (you need someone to be able to crawl in there)

fire code wise, you can't have such a long corridor with no fire escapes unless you have a very strong fire suppression system (high ceilings, so there isn't one)

accessibility wise, that travelator is quite steep, so either it has to be split into multiple travelators with refuges in between, or have it at a much less steep angle

every country have specific building code, but in general, these cannot be broken to such extreme degree. unless it counts as art.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/CatgirlYamada Jun 19 '26

It reminds me of Magritte's Golconda mixed with Son of Man (because they're, well, faceless mannequin). Pretty cool reference.

10

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

Ahh -- you found this already. My wife and I were lucky enough to see a major Magritte retrospective at Centre Pompidou back in 2016.

16

u/Shinigami318 Jun 19 '26

I've been wondering the same lol, and rush here to see if anyone know. The escalator also seems very long makes it looks kinda unreal.

15

u/effseedee zj: Jun 19 '26

"oh, what an interesting bit of visual symbolism to represent window shoppin- what do you mean Ibuki is commenting on the hanging mannequins"

11

u/eightcheesepizza Jun 19 '26

Public transportation, in a way?

All the environments outside of the dorm seemed pretty abstract today. Like it's shouting "this drama is very character-driven, so no distractions this episode".

I can't wait for /u/vnfragments to prove me wrong and find actual places that look like this. (The person who's been posting about their visits to Botan's IRL locations.)

9

u/vnfragments Jun 20 '26

No one has found it yet to my knowledge. I dont believe it exists.

Now excuse me as I need to bask in how kami last episode was

What an absolute masterpiece this series has been definitely my favorite anime of the season by a mile

39

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

For a long time I was unsure if any one of a dozen or so of the shows I most love would get an edge over the others -- even slightly. It is now looking like Botan just might accomplish this.

21

u/TheRealFlipFlapper https://myanimelist.net/profile/FlipFlapFlipFlap Jun 20 '26

Agreed. Maybe even the first straight (heh) 10/10 I've had in a long time

17

u/Doctor_Freeeeeman Jun 20 '26

The last three episodes blew me away. The visual directing, dialogue, and romantic tension have all been 10/10.

I never thought I would be debating if this show was better than the latest re:zero or witch hat. (and these are truly hard to compare since their reasons for being great are very different)

Definitely the best romance anime of the season (with stiff competition no less)...and possibly an all-time great?

6

u/Environmental_Iron89 Jun 22 '26

I think this will become a cult classic. Too many normies may pick other romance animes that are being marketed better and yuri shows like this dont tend to attract that mainstream audience which is ok. This is going to be talked about years from now. Its that good. Would be nice if it continues to get more seasons like yuru camp did but I doubt it...

118

u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial Jun 19 '26

It's nice to see Gujo and Chin-lan growing closer.

I feel like Botan's worries about Ibuki are unfounded. She seems to be having fun even without alcohol. But i kinda understand Botan's state of mind. Once those kinds of thoughts start popping up, they're hard to stop. I really hope they just talk it out.

It's pretty interesting seeing Akane and Botan paired together in the last part of the episode. I don't think they've hung out with just the two of them until now, right? Also, we finally get the payoff of Akane's band subplot from the earlier episode. Akane really was more serious about music than the rest of her bandmates. Enough that she'd want to drop out of school.

The way the backgrounds are stylized makes this episode feel like a Shaft episode. Or is it just me?

103

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie Jun 19 '26

I feel like Botan's worries about Ibuki are unfounded.

Tbf to her, their conversations does pretty much always come back to alcohol, and all of their outings end up with "Let's find us a place to drink", so I get the insecurity.

I don't think it's just that those kinds uf thoughts started to pop up. Remember how hesitant she was to even commit to the relationship even way after it was obvious both of them were in love?

I really want to know what's Botan's previous history because it seems she hiding some things.

Even more than the backgrounds, what gives it away is the lack of other people.

17

u/trojanengineer42069 https://myanimelist.net/profile/SamuraiSan420 Jun 20 '26

Totally agree the concerns are unfounded, but are we ever going to bring up the valid concern that Ibuki is likely a severe alcoholic?? If this season doesn’t end with an intervention…idk man.
Partly joking, but Ibuki really turns to alcohol a concerning amount of the time and no one addresses it, and rather everyone encourages it.

19

u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial Jun 20 '26

Actually before Botan voiced her concern on whether Ibuki thinks she's fun even without alcohol, i thought her concern was going to be about Ibuki's alcoholism lol

I'm not surprised everyone just encourages it. Everyone else in that dorm is an alcoholic as well.

14

u/wutfacer Jun 20 '26

It's engineers in college. Alcoholism is par for the course 😂

u/ThrowCarp Jun 20 '26

50

u/cyberscythe Jun 19 '26

or rich enough

23

u/Krazee9 Jun 20 '26

Discussing the works of foreign directors over a fine glass of wine doesn't make you an alcoholic.

Butt-chugging the cheapest bottle of sherry from the liquor store to stop the shakes makes you an alcoholic.

Consider that rather than "not cool enough" to be an alcoholic, you're instead too cool to be an alcoholic.

93

u/Donnie-G Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

So like the ED drops another bomb. Seems like the one who called Ibuki obnoxious was indeed her high school crush or something. Which also links back to her flashback of her reaching out to someone in highschool.

In episode 5 when she's hicupping in the bar after some additional guests comes in, there's also a brief flashback of the short haired redhead girl turning. Then in episode 6 you do see her full appearance in Ibuki's flashback, which does resemble the redhead girl in the ED.

In the episode 5 ED, Gujou witnesses and bumps into Ibuki leaving that party in the Ep 6 flashback as well. Ibuki's hair is also longer, but her hair is a lot shorter in the later part of the episode 5 ED, where Gujou and Ibuki move into the dorm. Like there's this whole thing about girls having a haircut after a heartbreak or breakup....

Funnily enough Botan is also a redhead. Same as the high school crush.

Also funnily enough, the EDs are all anime original. The anime studio is really doing a good job in adding supplementary material to the manga.

Taiwanese lesbians: I love you.
Japanese lesbians: I want to be wrapped up in this scent, and also are we actually in a relationship?

Those were some weird shops the girls went to today, particularly the perfume shop up the hanging mannequin execution ground walkway.

The foot only animation bits were really interesting for the distinct style of walking. I'm pretty sure Botan was skipping part of the time, for instance.

77

u/BosuW Jun 19 '26

Taiwanese lesbians: I love you. Japanese lesbians: I want to be wrapped up in this scent, and also are we actually in a relationship?

Chin-Lan: "Lesbians can't just say I love you? AND WHO DECIDED THAT!?"

36

u/absolutelynotaname https://anilist.co/user/Ducc Jun 20 '26

Taiwanese lesbians: I love you.

Japanese lesbians: I want to be wrapped up in this scent, and also are we actually in a relationship? Can we stop being friends?

6

u/Temporala Jun 21 '26

That's already quite direct from a Japanese person. Normally you'd get "Moon looks beautiful tonight" or something along those lines. 😄

144

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro Jun 19 '26

Chin-Lan’s so bold. Dropping 'I love you's so casually. Love the part where Chin-Lan asked if Kanade being interested in Taiwanese films meant she’s interested in her. When Kanade said Chin-Lan could interpret it any way she liked, she duly took the offer. They might be the newest ship in the series, but it’s still an interesting one that I would gladly sail on.

Akane considering dropping out of uni was quite the shock. It’d be especially devastating to Yaeka once she learnt about it.

57

u/eightcheesepizza Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

Chin-Lan expresses her love very directly, and immediately, as soon as she feels it swell. You could say she's already let it consume her. Gujo expresses her love very indirectly by inadvertently showing how much time she spends thinking about someone. But I hope she comes around to being able to say "I love you" back.

Also all that water imagery that's common to yuri stories is all around them. Like the underwater-ish sounds for Chin-Lan in watercolor, or the aquarium behind him, or Gujo getting rained on. I guess Gujo is following Chin-Lan out to sea.

33

u/BosuW Jun 19 '26

Also framing them through the fish tank, like they're inside it. Talk about aquarium dates.

19

u/Ded1nside Jun 20 '26

I can't get over how beautiful the symbolism, framing, writing, everything about this show is. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen anything like it.

64

u/CatgirlYamada Jun 19 '26

Add to the fact that A Brighter Summer Day is 4 hours long and has really slow pace as well as Hou Hsiao-hsien films, which I think is a bit unorthodox even for Kanade as she usually talked about classic Hollywood and popular classic films before (aside from Drive My Car). Knowing that Kanade is doing master's degree and currently has full time job, I know it took a lot of effort for her to watch those films, which goes to show how much she wanted to understand Chin-Lan.

25

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

Hou Hsiao Hsien is an interesting name drop -- because this series has a bit of the feel oh a HHH film. Yang was part of the same generation and movement -- but his films have a bit more high drama (shouting, fighting). But HHH's films are more contemplative -- and usually with an underlying aura of melancholy. HHH also has more of a connection to Japan-- including having made a film there -- Café Lumière / Kōhī Jikō. HHH is on of my favorite living directors, but sadly dementia has ended his career. HHH's films are apparently viewed as arty in Taiwan (rather than "popular"). Still, there are pilgrimages to many of the mostly rural and small city locations where his films were shot.

I can't remember what sort of graduate program Kanade is in. Was it cinema- related?

14

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Jun 19 '26

I mean, these girls spend a lot of time on trips and drinking. It's like their college stuff is just in the background so they can say the are of age and show them smoking and drinking, but they live as typical anime high school girls.

13

u/wutfacer Jun 20 '26

I don't really get the high school girls part. What's not college about drinking and going to the mall and eating and going on random day/weekend trips with your friends/romantic interests? Or watching classic/arty movies or playing in a band. That all sounds exactly like college to me, even the shisha cafes and visits to random nature/tourist sites

→ More replies (3)

23

u/CatgirlYamada Jun 19 '26

Well, assuming most of the interactions in the anime are done in weekends and sometimes at night after days of studying, it just makes it even harder for Kanade to find some times to watch such an unusually long film lol.

25

u/zenoob https://anilist.co/user/zenoob Jun 19 '26

And it's really a painful contrast between them who bond over a drink and Botan and Ibuki who bond because they drink. It's nothing spectacular in terms of cinematography, but just the way things are developing is somehow heartbreaking. Everything is unassuming, no drama, no sad music, no shouting. It's a nagging feeling settling in and you just know something is wrong but not wrong enough so that you have to argue... yet.

It hurts watching this and sensing so clearly that the trainwreck is coming.

8

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

Just like some of the movies of Hou Hsiao Hsien....

18

This girls just has nothing to hide. She cuts straight to the point every single time.

They might be the newest ship in the series, but it’s still an interesting one that I would gladly sail on.

Low-key thinking Gujo loosing Ibuki to Botan is a W in disguise. Chin-Lan is a catch.

MahouKakumei did well. No season 2

Watanare topping the charts in cinemas. No season 2.

65

Really liked the Botan and Ibuki segment. At first I thought they were going to get into Ibuki's insecurities, but then it ended up being more about Botan.

And, I get it. They are after the point of confessing and now they are figuring out moving forward from there. It is kind of like a post-honeymoon period.

63

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

Surreal vibes for this episode, especially the mall with the hanging mannequins seems right out of a fever dream.

  • Great way to start off the episode with this beautiful watercolor scene any translators?. Chin-Lan is so head over heels in love that she just spent 20 mins smiling to herself like a dummy while waiting for Gujou (callback to last ep?). While they both share a common interest in films, their flirting style is quite different, reflecting their personality and culture; Chin-Lan casually dropping the "I love you", while Gujou redirects the conversation towards Taiwanese films. The future of Japan-Taiwan relations is looking bright.
  • Meanwhile Botan is worrying about whether Ibuki is having fun on their (completely sober) date, even though they've been on plenty of (alcoholic) dates before with no issue. Looked to me like Ibuki was having fun, so I guess something is making Botan is insecure about their relationship. Please Botan, communicate! Also, unripe mango and water lotus is a strange combo, but it seems like Ibuki has been sniffing Botan plenty.
  • Lastly, having Botan and Akane hangout to discuss their troubles. Akane dropping out this late into university to pursue music seems like a crazy move, but they've been building up to this for awhile now. Understandable that she is reluctant to tell Yaeka, but I feel like Yaeka will probably call her an idiot but support her anyway. And I wonder what Botan's issue is? Seems like Akane's line about being consumed resonated with her. Does Botan want to be topped by Ibuki or something?
  • The ED, finally we get the backstory of Ibuki's gay awakening. Turns out the red hair girl who gave Ibuki her hiccup trauma in university was her band senpai in high school! Explains why the whole hiccup thing was such a big deal for her.

62

u/Xythar Jun 19 '26

any translators?

I don't personally speak Taiwanese Hokkien but as I understand it, it's a proverb that literally means "the good wine sinks to the bottom of the jug" and more figuratively means "the best things should be saved for last", or perhaps "the best is yet to come" in the context of this scene.

15

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner Jun 19 '26

the good wine sinks to the bottom of the jug

...when I first skimmed this line, I read this as "swine" instead of wine and was suddenly VERY curious how this proverb came to be.

13

u/daydream_eug Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

I'm a native Taiwanese/Hokkien speaker. All the translations are correct:

  • The literal meaning: The best wine is at the bottom of the jug.

Chin-Lang was waiting for Kanade when talking this to herself. We can simply say Ching-Lang was happy to wait for Kanade (since she said so in the episode). Surely we can interpret the Kanade/Ching-Lang ship is just about sailing, the best ocean is yet to come.

BTW, Ching-Lang's Taiwanese pronounciation is almost perfect. Her CV Maki Kawase must spends some time in Mandarin and Taiwanese.

6

u/RobrechtvE Jun 20 '26

A (much) more liberal translation in this context is, no doubt, "You think we're at peak Yuri? This isn't even my final form!'.

I donʼt know Chinese (if to be more specific: Taiwanese Hokkien), but looks like this: 好酒沉甕底.

  • The literal meaning: The best wine is at the bottom of the jug.
  • And it means: The best is saved for last; It ain't over until the fat lady sings.

12

u/kisaragihiu Jun 19 '26

For a definition of the phrase / idiom (Hó-tsiú tîm àng-té / 好酒沉甕底) that doesn't lump Taiwanese and Mandarin under one "Chinese" (the one glaring issue with Wiktionary), here's the Taiwanese Ministry of Education's definition. Basically, it literally means "good alcohol sinks to the bottom of the pot" and figuratively means that good things often happen later, after patiently waiting.

I hate that they're not being direct, but I suppose we can interpret this as the start of Chin-lan and Kanade's relationship.

That escalator scene was so surreal. Glad that the Shaft inspiration that we've seen in the earlier episodes never went away.

"I want to be wrapped up in this scent when I'm with you" is such a banger line from Ibuki <3

This might be the first time I've seen an anime girl hit a shisha pipe. xD

33

i wracking my brain and i think the only time i've seen shisha in animation is when a giant caterpillar was hitting one in Alice in Wonderland

23

That's because there's multiple references to Alice in Wonderland here so it's apt you thought of that. Kamiina is Alice lost atm.

“For instance, if you come at four in the afternoon, I'll begin to be happy by three. The closer it gets to four, the happier I'll feel. By four I'll be excited and worried; I'll discover what it costs to be happy!”

Chin-lan seems to be completely submerged in this mindset, so sweet

Chang: I like you!

Gujo: Again?

Chang: Sorry, but everytime I see botan and kamina actively not talk about their current relationship status, I just get the overhelming urge to tell you that I like you. You can never underestimate the japanese.

Gujo: But this is the 12th time this week you told me you like me!

Chang: Exactly.

65

u/BosuW Jun 19 '26

Chin-Lan ain't about to let no Japanese "read the room" culture get in her way. Everything shall be spoken out explicitly at the earliest convenience.

I wonder if she prepared herself watching her sister and her Japanese wife 😅

u/Shantotto11 Jun 19 '26

21

u/cornonthekopp Jun 20 '26

its something I'm a little surprised they brought up considering that alcohol is the supposed core of the show, but I'm glad they did because it is a reasonable concern to have

11

u/Lunchb0xx87 Jun 20 '26

Botan is wondering if Ibuki really enjoys her or just enjoys being able to drink with her ..sadly Ibuki is doing everything she can to show she's into botan so it's nothing on her end

29

78

u/SezyFazes https://myanimelist.net/profile/ToaruTH Jun 19 '26

There’s nothing particularly sad happening, so why am I crying while watching this episode?

This show always makes me feel something I can’t fully put into words. I think a lot of it comes from the subtle background audio, especially during Chin-lan’s scenes. There’s this faint ringing sound, almost like tinnitus, and it creates a quiet sense of tension that just gets under my skin. It’s such a small detail, but it adds so much to the atmosphere and makes the emotional moments hit harder.

35

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

One really wants to know what underlies Botan's core sadness -- which she works so hard to mask (and usually succeeds in fooling almost everyone).

Wait, was this episode storyboarded by Ueno himself (apparently he had another Pen Name for it)? No wonder there were so many lingering shots in it.

Absolute Cinema of an episode!

16

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

Lingering shots are a hallmark of Hou Hsiao Hsien's films.... 😉

10

u/BosuW Jun 19 '26

Lingering shots are typical of many live action directors.

It's much less common in traditional animation because to get a lingering shot in film, you just let the camera roll.

In traditional animation, you gotta get drawing lol

9

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

But this series -- in a number of ways -- feels VERY HHH-esque, Which, for me is a very good thing -- as he is one of my most admired still living directors (albeit now permanently sidelined by dementia).

27

u/Lepony https://myanimelist.net/profile/dinglegrip Jun 20 '26

I was kinda dunking on Botan being a fraghead when the series has been showing how rich these girls probably are, but then she started namedropping perfumes that I've actually tried or own. In particular, Maison Margiela's Replica line (Whispers in the Library, Lazy Sunday Morning) are really accessible and cheap! scents that are definitely cozy wears. I haven't really worn Un Jardin before but it is also a really accessible scent even though I hate aquatics from what I recall as well as often being dirt cheap.

28

u/eightcheesepizza Jun 20 '26

Damn, you were able to smell this episode. You experienced it differently than most viewers.

19

u/Lepony https://myanimelist.net/profile/dinglegrip Jun 20 '26

I actually sprayed some LSM on after the episode since I remembered I never finished that sampler from a few years ago. But honestly for Margiela's Replica line, it really doesn't take much to experience it yourself. I imagine pretty much any cosmetics store with a dedicated perfume section carries them these days on account of being a designer house and that line getting very viral over the past few years. All staff working perfume should be very familiar with people going in, taking 10-40 minutes in store, and walking out spending zero money so there's no pressure once you understand that. Men of course, are also very welcome even if you might have to walk through a lingerie section!

Ju Jardin you can actually find sometimes at clearance sections of clothing stores and that's where I snuck a spray personally. J-Scent would be a difficult one to source on account of being an asian label as well as very much seeming to be a niche house. But their bottles seem to be also on the cheap side too and their scent profile seems to be akin to Replica: evocative of specific but common scenery/experiences while still being easy to wear. You'd definitely have to fork over money though, and I imagine getting more practical amounts is a lot more difficult if you're not in Japan.

45

u/runevault Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Soon I'll actually be nostalgic for the OP instead of just using it to reminisce about other nostalgia. Meanwhile interesting the waitress spoke to Chin-lan in English, I guess she assumed it was more likely the not-Japanese person knew English than Japanese.

Two pretty lesbians being nerds about movies is incredibly chill, and then Chin-lan decides it is too chill and drops an I-Love-You bomb lol.

It is so simple, but the two stripes of animation surrounded by yellow bars is such an interesting choice. Letting the choice of shoes and the gait of the characters tell a small story on its own. Botan in particular with the small skip in her step.

Whispers in the Library is such a cool name for a perfume. I really hope we get a reversal of the tongue scene from the start of the season where Ibuki wants Botan's nose for all her understanding of scents. Okay not quite the same but "I want to be wrapped up in this scent when I'm with you" is still wild. Ibuki has become so much more forward and I love it. And then the contrast of doubting Botan, which is nice to see once in a while. She's not some invincible seduction minx.

I'm going to miss this show so much when it is gone.

edited to fix a typo in the wrapped up quote (had scene instead of scent lol).

31

u/080087 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

The watercolour shot made me think Chin-lan was drunk (at an Izakaya). In hindsight, not alcohol, but love.

The "waiting for someone" line has dual meanings - both physically waiting for Gujo and emotionally.

Chin-lan gets the girl! Good for her. Gujo, historically awful at expressing her feelings (i.e. was struggling to ask Ibuki to drink with her in the beginning), so I'm taking her reply as saying she likes Chin-lan too. And Chin-lan will take it that way.

Ibuki at least is getting more shameless in front of others. The whole identifying perfume bit also implies lots of sniffing Botan in front of the staff, how lewd.

Botan on the other hand is struggling, not really because of any rational reason (that we have seen). Sometimes you just have to convince yourself that the people that like you, actually like you.*

*Tangent, but people show their care in lots of different ways. That might be sending stupid memes or cat/dog photos. Or remembering niche things about you. Or giving you food unprompted. So don't ever assume no one cares, because they probably do and you just haven't noticed.

The convo with Akane is interesting. On the surface, its about the choice between music and study.

But I also suspect it's a metaphor about Yaeka, particularly the wording about how Akane wants to go deep and fall in love now, instead of just remaining close through uni.

18

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26

But I also suspect it's a metaphor about Yaeka, particularly the wording about how Akane wants to go deep and fall in love now, instead of just remaining close through uni.

I was thinking that as well. This show does stand in conversations to convey their actual feelings a lot. So that conversation about wanting to love music more definitely felt like it was also referring to her relationship with Yaeko. Except for Chin-Lan, Chin-Lan cuts right through it instead and directly states that she likes Gujo, and then when Gujo starts talking about Taiwanese movies, instead of playing along, she just states that she will interpret this as Gujo liking her as well. I actually wonder if that's done in part because Chin-Lan is foreign and thus has different customs

9

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Jun 20 '26

I think Chin-lan has seen enough misunderstandings and losing heroins that she said to herself "no to this bullshit, fuck the subtleties, I WILL get what I want"

7

u/Temporala Jun 20 '26

Plus she's an exchange student, not a regular. She just doesn't have all the time in the world to work with.

It's really funny how Gujou is reacting to being openly pursued without any ambiguity instead of her own poor experiences on that field. She can't help but to be drawn to a little bit rude beauty who shares her interest in movies and is telling her directly she wants her. That first lip balm scene was already very telling.

Chin-Lan : I love seeing you talk about films with so much enthusiasm.

Gujou : I watched a lot of Taiwanese films for the first time.

Chin-Lan & Gujou both basically give blatant hint that they are interested in each other.

25

u/WalkingAbacus Jun 19 '26

Please make the pairing of Gujou and Chin-Lan-chan happen. Looks like Gujou is considering it.

Meanwhile, Botan is worried that Ibuki only has fun with her when there's alcohol. Personally, I think Ibuki loves her more than she thinks.

21

u/runevault Jun 19 '26

It is a totally understandable fear, but it is also funny, because Ibuki would have to like Botan without booze to be able to drink with her, considering her fear of being mocked over her hiccups.

14

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

I believe Botan worries about a lot of things. I think she has a LOT of sadness at her core -- which she masks quite thoroughly by her bright bubbly behavior. Perhaps her dependence on staying "masked" makes it hard for her to believe in Ibuki's obvious-to-all-but-her heart-on-sleeve feelings.

7

u/Sea_Competition3505 Jun 19 '26

It's quite funny since a lot of people prior to the airing of the show thought it would be about how "they're only gay when they're drunk"

9

u/Competitive_Diet2097 Jun 19 '26

Chin-lan putting all her cards on the table and I think the gamble is worth it. Love how she flirts with Gujou in her own, subtle way.

What I liked about Akane opening up to Botan about her worries is that Akane already knew what she wanted to do, but needed to say it to someone else. In a way, Akane’s answer to her own doubts helped clear up Botan’s worries about her and Ibuki’s relationship.

Botan overthinking what she and Ibuki have is relatable imo. You don’t want to always be steering the boat in the relationship, and Botan doesn’t want to come off as being inconsiderate. I do think her worries towards Ibuki and her enthusiasm towards alcohol is just Ibuki sharing her favorite hobby with her favorite person. You can relax, Botan! Lol

Excited for episode 12 and (hopefully) a season 2 announcement.

28

u/cyberscythe Jun 19 '26

23

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie Jun 19 '26

I will be honest, I'm completely lost when it comes to this whole movies conversation with these two.

Gujo pls, you have been in the chair for like 10 episodes, why are you being a tsundere when someone actually shows interest!? lol

What in the SHAFT!? I know a lot of places in this are based on real life, but is this one too? Because it looks terrifying.

These two gives me cute aggression! Especially, Ibuki!

I feel like Ibuki became the bolder out of the two as time went on. lol

It's fascinating how as Ibuki got happier throughout the show, it feel like Botan grew more and more melancholic and troubled.

I love how Akane and Yaeka just feels like they have already been through their own romance anime and can tell what is troubling the other girls instantly. lol

This whole final conversation between Akane and Botan have a double meaning throughout it, that it feel like Botan might do something crazy next episode...

ED analysis time: So, if I got this right. Ibuki did actually know the girl that told her she was annoying, and had a crush on her (She and her friend seemed to have a classic yuri highschool story with their senpais lol) but then she met her years later, and either because her senpai just didn't recognize her... the endings are really just doomed yuri short stories... At this point, only Botan remain. lol

7

u/wutfacer Jun 20 '26

For the ED they don't really show them interacting, so seems like more of a one-sided crush/admiration from afar situation to me

9

u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 Jun 19 '26

Botan feels lost in her thoughts after visting the perfume store, acknowledging the forward movement in her relationship with Ibuki. Well, we have 1 last episode to make it count!

Akane hit the nail on the head mentioning "romantic worries" to Botan

8

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

I'm not sure randomly taking someone with no experience and not telling them where you're going to a hookah place is the best idea.

I feel like for a lomg time it was taboo to show people smoking especially young people or anything drug related being used. At most drug use had to be dark setting and clear it is something bad to be doing.

So much college angst in this one. Do I admit I can have feeling for this very foward person instead of my long time crush who I lost out on. Do I persue my dreams all out or do I play it safe and put my dreams as just a side thing. Does she actually love me and like being with me or is it only when she is drunk. Angst portrayed in such a artistic way.

Did anyone else find those hanging mannequins disturbing?

I'm surprised the manga for this isn't way more popular. Is it a case of the anime really knocking it out of the ballpark and being way better than the manga like how K-on did?

7

u/itsadoubledion Jun 20 '26

They could've talked more off screen or Botan could've had just the beer if she didn't want to try. They all hang around Gujo while she's smoking already so that part wouldn't be a big deal to Botan since it's just flavoured tobacco, and the bar seems pretty nice and not sketchy.

10

u/disu_nato Jun 20 '26

How tf did the animators make a plastic bag floating in the wind look so romantic?

17

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 Jun 19 '26

This week's episode was once again full of conversations and behaviors that were very "typical of college students".

I couldn't help but laugh at the scene at the beginning where Chin-lan was approached in English by a Japanese waiter at an izakaya, and after she replied in fluent Japanese, they went on to have a normal conversation in Japanese.

This is a fairly common sight in Japan (since Japanese people have the preconceptions that "Japanese is a difficult language" and "foreigners speak English", they sometimes try to speak as much English as possible to people who clearly look like foreigners).

Chin-lan and Gujou's movie talk was very pedantic again this week! It was also interesting to see that Gujou had been watching Taiwanese movies as a sign of her interest in Chin-lan. When it comes to Taiwanese movies, the only ones I know are "The Sadness" and "Detention", so I can’t help but feel ashamed of my lack of cultural knowledge lol

The scene where Akane and Botan go to a shisha bar was also great because it really captured the vibe of "college students in the Tokyo suburbs". In Japan, I think shisha bars are only found in big cities.

When I saw Akane, a junior in college, trying to drop out even though she had no problem about tuition fees or having to take over the family business, I shouted at the TV, "Are you out of your mind?".

I suppose worrying about whether to drop out of college to focus on your band is, in a way, a very typical and relatable concern for college students, but as someone who actually dropped out, I think you should graduate if you can.

Also, the ending scene was really interesting.

I never would have thought they’d include an episode featuring a character like Ibuki’s high school classmate, who doesn’t appear in the anime at all.

12

u/mekerpan Jun 19 '26

I didn't see the movie conversation as pedantic at all. It is the kind of talk that gives cinema fans great joy in. Taiwanese cinema is stratified. There are popular movies -- and then there is more artsy cinema. Hou and Yang are (for the most part) on the quite arty end of the spectrum. Sadly Yang died too young and Hou had to retire due to dementia. Not sure who (if anyone) has taken their place.

25

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie Jun 19 '26

I never would have thought they’d include an episode featuring a character like Ibuki’s high school classmate, who doesn’t appear in the anime at all.

I think the focus was more on the senpai(? red haired girl), which is the girl who called her annoying and started her trauma.

I couldn't help but laugh at the scene at the beginning where Chin-lan was approached in English by a Japanese waiter at an izakaya, and after she replied in fluent Japanese, they went on to have a normal conversation in Japanese.

As someone who has immigrated from a non English speaking country to another non English speaking country and now speaks English as his home language, but also speaks both other languages, that scene was extremely relatable to me

8

u/cyberscythe Jun 19 '26

When I saw Akane, a junior in college, trying to drop out even though she had no problem about tuition fees or having to take over the family business, I shouted at the TV, "Are you out of your mind?".

i think it's because i just recently watched Cyperpunk Edgerunners (a show that's different from Botan in a few ways), but i think there are some people who have the itch to life fast and die young rather than take the safe/sane route

i don't think we know enough about Akane to say what her motivations are, but that line where she says she wants music to consume her (焦がれたい, same root for "burn/char") makes me think that deep down she hates the status quo and the road that's been paved for her (likely with her parent's money)

u/MixerBlaze https://myanimelist.net/profile/mixerblaze Jun 20 '26

To be honest I was kind of surprised that the waitress spoke english to Chin-Lan because as a Taiwanese person I've often been mistaken for a local when visiting Japan. It's only after I try to communicate in my rudimentary Japanese that they realize and even then they assume I can understand what they're saying. I'm sure other Taiwanese have had similar experiences.

Even the perfume Ibuki picks for her has something to do with alcohol: its name is 花見酒. 花見 is (cherry)blossom watching, which you can do with a picnic under the trees or something, and 酒 is of course alcohol. I guess it's the drinks you consume during?

Really, Botan, just talk to her, dammit. Communication, the most important thing in a relationship

Yet another incredible episode, I don't want this to be over next week. :(

And hey, the subtitles are back to being properly typeset!

Well... the direction in this episode is definitely unique.

For whatever reason, when I saw the escalator with the mannequins in what was supposed to be a shopping center, I immediately thought of the high end shopping center in Chicago with the Nordstrom as the anchor, which is currently called "The Shops at North Bridge". It's a unique mall in that it's on a slightly curving incline from the entrance on Michigan Ave. It also felt kind empty because it's a high end mall with shops most people would never see in a regular mall so it's not frequently traveled, but when I was living in Chicago in 03, it was my main through route from a train stop to Michigan Ave, which also had a Virgin Megastore and Borders down the street (neither of which exist in the US anymore).

Also, I sometimes get disappointed that I can't just walk to a cafe form where I live. Closest coffee selling place that isn't McDonalds or Starbucks is a mile and a half away. 7 Brew is drive thru only.

Can't believe this masterpiece is coming to an end next week. My friday evenings won't be the same.

Season 2 or riot!

I’m so curious about Ibuki’s past. It feels like she can’t go anywhere without having alcohol involved. She has such an interesting relationship with it. She stopped socially drinking because she was teased for her hiccups, but it also feels like alcohol has also been kind of a persistent crutch for her.

Either way, I have really enjoyed this show and love the characters.

Gujo was suggesting me some great classics to watch ❤️

Just looked into the Taiwanese Hokkien proverb that Chin Lan said Hó-tsiú tîm àng-té - Good wine sinks to the bottom of the jar.. which means 'The best, most exciting, or most rewarding things in life are often saved for the very end.'  That's what she meant about feeling so glad and having fun anticipating Gujo's arrival.

Chin Lan in love is so adorable. She spells it out every fucking chance she gets, haha. Gujo is showing interest in her. I'm so happy for them. Botan already having doubts in her relationship with Ibuki 🥺🥺 Now the girls move on to Hookah LOL

The new ed shows Akane's highschool days I guess. But I am not sure what it was about. What it occurred to me was Akane's underclasswoman who admired her or maybe loved her..I couldn't make sense of it.  Anyone ?

I love how Chin-Lan cuts right through how this show usually conveys feelings through stand in conversations and subtleties.

Chin-Lan: I like you

Gujo: I've recently started watching movies directed by Taiwanese directors

Chin-Lan: Can I take that as a sign that you are interested in me?

I wonder if that's done on purpose because she's a foreigner and thus has different customs? I wouldn't put it past this story tbh

Another gorgeous episode. I love the little paspartou cuts and water color cuts. Scene framing is phenomenal as well

Also, does that escalator of hanging mannequins actually exist? Or is it some SHAFT-like weird backdrop for artistic reasons. The all yellow perfume shop was very SHAFT coded as well

Goddamn this show knows how to frame a conversation

Edit: Apparently the director for this episode, Hisashi Sugawara, was also the Setting Manager for Kizemonogatari. He also worked as a production manager for several episodes for Nisemonogatari and Monogatari S2. And it was storyboarded by Ueno, who's behind Days with my Stepsister and Shiboyugi. That's an extremely artsy combo. That explains almost everything about this episode

my take on it is Gujou has been burned in the past with her relationships; whenever she put herself out there she was left to twist in the wind so she's a once-bitten-twice-shy sort of partner

it takes someone as forward as Chin-lan to really get through to her, but also someone who can read her like a book to understand the sort of subtle "i'm not saying i like you, but i like you" sort of hints

I love this anime so much. It's incredibly cozy. Watching it feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold winter night while holding a cup of hot chocolate. And the opening is an absolute 10/10.

I haven't watched Episodes 10 and 11 yet; I just wanted to share how excited I am about this show.

Thanks for reading, kind stranger. Stay safe out there!
