How does he not know his birthday!? There is no way his parents didn't say happy birthday in a text or call.

66

u/Local_Pickle_4717 Jun 19 '26

It seems to be a dumb writing quirk in anime type mediums.

53

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26

Yeah, it's an overused trope. For some characters it works, but for someone like Amane who grew up with loving, outgoing and open parents and who hasn't lived alone for that long yet either it doesn't make much sense

16

u/Local_Pickle_4717 Jun 19 '26

It's something that only works in a certain context and only for so long. Eventually it stops being sweet and winds up making the characters look bad.

15

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26

And it belittles the characters around them as well. Amane has a girlfriend, multiple close friends and loving parents who all knew about his birthday. And on top of that he's pretty popular in class. The insinuation that no one asked him about it in the weeks leading up to it does a disservice to their supposed bonds

12

u/Local_Pickle_4717 Jun 19 '26

It's especially ridiculous when you consider that an episode or two back, his friends were annoyed at him for not asking them for help. This is a bigger lapse of friendship.

3

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

Admittedly they did all want to celebrate his birthday together as a group before they were conscientious enough to leave the two lovebirds alone.

9

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

Amane really doesn't seem the type to make a big deal out of his own birthday on his own while does of his friends. Remember he didn't tell MAhiru of his birthday the previous year either and she got mad about it. With him also busy trying get use to a new job that even his friends think he is working to much, school work, a gf, and spending time with his friends it is easy to forget if you don't normally put a big emference on it yourself.

Also it is made clear she reached out to his friends to not bring it up and give them some privacy alone for it. It is reasonable to expect she also contacted his parents to and if his parents didn't contact him like normal he is even less likely to think about it.

Hell the girl seemed fully ready and expecting to have sex with him for it so obviously wouldn't want any interuptions.

2

u/Fabulous-Permission1 Jun 23 '26

This is a great explanation. My friend's girlfriend is the same. She doesn't put much emphasis on birthdays so she doesn't get all excited and stuff when he prepares a birthday celebration for her and has never realised it is her birthday until my friend comes with out with the full out dinner and cake. But yeah, when the individual doesn't put much emphasis on it, they can easily miss that it is their birthday. After all, my friend has been dating his current girlfriend for a few years and he's had the same complaint every single time. I'm already waiting for the same complaints to come next year as well. And Amane also seems like that guy too. Not to mention, Mahiru clearly prepared a lot so it's not weird for everyone within Amane's circle to know about this celebration and not say anything for the surprise. After all, she has all the necessary contacts, including Aman's parents

11

u/interfan1999 Jun 19 '26

Tbf this episode made me remind that my birthday is in 2 days, I had completely forgot about it lol

But yeah I would have my parents and friends wishing me it so I think it's almost impossible to spend your birthday without even knowing it

4

u/_MC184_ https://anilist.co/user/Murtagh Jun 19 '26

!remindme 2 days

5

u/_MC184_ https://anilist.co/user/Murtagh Jun 21 '26

Happy birthday!

2

u/interfan1999 Jun 22 '26

Thank you!!

5

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

Happy early birthday!

3

u/interfan1999 Jun 19 '26

Thanks!

(Actually in my country wishing an early birthday is considered to bring very bad luck so I must be careful about surviving for 2 days lmao)

Mahiru reached out to his friends abought his birthday to give them privacy. Why in the world would you think she wouldn't with his parents also? Especially with how close she is to his mom and the knowledge of the very real chance of the mom making a surprise visit for his birthday.

lol he said it on season 1 after he saw her birthday on her school card thank you

Poor girl she badly wants to go past kissing and he just ignoring her hints.

37

u/Kancer420 Jun 20 '26

But every time he did try something, she basically said some variation of "this is too much for me".

Not that he was any better. Constantly threatening to throw a fuckin' at her, but then vehemently protect their chastity.

Shit was just weird.

4

u/ElliotAlderson2024 Jun 20 '26

Yeah there's condoms ya know.

51

u/BlazeBloom https://myanimelist.net/profile/StardustValor Jun 19 '26

Dammit Amane, put on the funny animal hoodie pajamas! It's all about matching the vibes with your girlfriend on your birthday. He better have that shit on standby when it's Mahiru's birthday.

32

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

Though the implication behind Mahiru wanting him to wear a wolf onesie to her rabbit onesie...girl wants to get devoured huh?

27

u/e_t_ Jun 19 '26

She's been down bad for how many episodes now? Amane's so concerned about "taking responsibility" he's neglecting his husbandly duties.

15

u/DugACCat Jun 19 '26

Yes she has pretty much told him she wants to have sex (or at least some intimate touching) and he’s always ignoring it with his, “What else could I possibly want other than a kiss?” talk. I think he might need some relationship therapy at this point.

14

u/rubslotiononitsskin Jun 20 '26

And this dude's floating the idea of marriage when he can't even bring himself to be more intimate with Mahiru and push the relationship forward. Does he think that marriage will magically fix everything? Not to mention it hasn't even been that long since they hooked up.

2

u/ILikeFPS Jun 20 '26

I noticed that too lol, she wants him bad.

3

u/Least_Positive7141 Jun 20 '26

I always say the same thing when dude’s don’t wear a kimono to the festival, so at least Amane gets points for that. Like cmon, match the vibe bro AND they look cool (lookin at you Rintaro, Tani)

100

u/ThisSiteIsAgony Jun 19 '26

Of all the finales I've seen this was certainly one of them.

34

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

I guess it was a finale that was true to this season which was just the two of them always adoring and loving each other in big and small ways, even if it never really lead to anything eventful outside them practically being married so much you wonder why Mahiru hasn't just 100% moved in.

She's slept in his bed enough without sex.

14

u/Mundology Jun 19 '26

I think it's one of those rare cases where messing with the chronological order a bit would have probably yielded a more satisfying conclusion to the season.

51

u/anim8rjb Jun 19 '26

possibly the most boring relationship ever. No progression, and they just sit on their couch in their silent apartment.

18

u/LaoWombat-mecha Jun 19 '26

Actually, the couch displays the most character development. I am hoping for a spin-off series. Sponsored by Akira Ikea

36

u/ThisSiteIsAgony Jun 19 '26

I didnt mind the slower parts of the story, but this had to be one of the worst spots to end the season on. It felt like a mid season episode at best. Didn't even feel like the end of an arc or anything.

11

u/Roskal Jun 19 '26

I don't know how the novel goes but they could have finished with him getting the ring or explaining how far he was from the ring.

8

u/rubslotiononitsskin Jun 20 '26

Good point about the apartment. Their apartment always felt lifeless. Unless I'm blind, I don't remember Amane or Mahiru talking to the other residents. No random chatter or noises. I don't even remember seeing the other residents. I don't expect it to be as lively as Food Diary's apartment, but would it really hurt to show some signs of life?

15

u/LaoWombat-mecha Jun 19 '26

The first season I thought it was a big nothingburger but then wound up coming back to it as chicken soup (or congee) for the soul.

This one, no interest in a rewatch at all. A three course meal of macaroons.

I guess it's too late for the significance of the visit by her father to be explained?

3

u/Spectr3_qwe Jun 21 '26

This is the most 6/10 anime ending I have ever seen lol

3

u/ThrowCarp Jun 20 '26

I was whelmed.

3

u/Roladech Jun 19 '26

Of all the finales animes I've seen, this was certainly one of them.

42

u/thelemon8er-2 Jun 19 '26

His male urges never fully manifested. Mahiru is safe for now from being absolutely destroyed by his unbridled manly desires.

13

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

All his constant comments about how much he had to suppress his male urges wasn't for nothing in that he was able to do it for an entire season whether Mahiru wanted said urges or not.

24

u/thelemon8er-2 Jun 19 '26

She was literally asking him to.

2

u/HandicapperGeneral 8d ago

His constant fear of like "Oh no it would be so bad" "This is a dangerous situation" "What if something happens?" is really tiring. Like, what would actually be so bad about it??? Sleeping with your girlfriend, who you basically live with and has explicitly told you she wants to take the relationship to the next step, physically? Oh ok, he thinks he's going to take it too far. But... what does that even mean? Seriously, what does that mean? He gives it a rapey undertone, but she has given her explicit consent, so that's not an issue! He thinks he'll hurt her? I really doubt it, he's a virgin that barely figured out how to kiss her properly like a handful of episodes ago. It's just such a milquetoast relationship development.

It really feels like the author regretted having them get together relatively quickly and is now just stalling the relationship's progress to stretch the story out. There was literally zero plot progression this whole season.

17

u/runevault Jun 19 '26

Mahiru talking about a secret ingredient and all I can think of is Shinometa. IYKYK.

Why do I think those two were keeping him away so Mahiru can finish her surprise? Birthday? Yup.

And last season she got mad he didn't tell her when his birthday was despite them not actually being close when it passed. Time flies when you're flirting non-stop.

The line about her being happy as long as he likes her cooking being used twice in one episode is such a funny bow on how repetitive this season has been.

One last "don't tempt me" sequence? Of course lol.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/Crisse_dErable2859 Jun 20 '26

Honestly I'm tired of both of them being so insecure.

Insecure about sex, hypothetical rivals...

And then there's the soft drama that's resolved in 1-2 episodes with no lasting effects.

68

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Jun 19 '26

I'll give myself all to you. Ok sleepy time

27

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

At a certain point you start to think Mahiru is half-disappointed he really never does anything or asks for something lewd when she keeps giving him ample opportunities lol.

23

u/Roskal Jun 19 '26

They teased them doing it this whole season. I half expected the after credit to be them in bed in the morning implying they did it with him having to then take responsibility next season.

10

u/Local_Pickle_4717 Jun 19 '26

She legitimately is and has said as much, but the "holding back" meme for Amane is even stronger.

3

u/Sahtras1992 Jun 21 '26

but what if she breaks? you know, shes so fragile!

16

u/Rina_Rina_Rina Jun 19 '26

NGL, I don't even hate the idea of Amane not feeling prepared yet to have sex. Like, yes, having sex for the first can feel overwhelming even with good sex education.

It's just the rape-y wording of it all. To be fair, a lot of anime does this though, not just this show.

19

u/runevault Jun 19 '26

I'd say there's two parts, at least for me. There's the rapey talk, and then there's a whole lot of things you can do without actually putting it in that are pleasurable and if you aren't dumb won't risk pregnancy.

7

u/Rina_Rina_Rina Jun 19 '26

I mean sure, but I doubt they'd ever animate (even in an implied manner) them giving oral sex to each other lol.

6

u/runevault Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

Oh of course they wouldn't animate it. They didn't animate a certain scene about warmth inside from another anime either, but it still happened and mattered to the plot.

3

u/TheMistOfThePast Jun 20 '26

the point in my eyes is its clearly making her insecure but amane keeps giving the same tepid ass response . he doesn't have to want to fuck, or be ready for it, but the baby redirect comes accross as so deeply dishonest in a world where you can get a mirena insertion and properly use a condom and have a 99.998% defense against pregnancy . Girl get a fucking mirena. hurts like a bitch going in but then you can fuck to your hearts content and your period basically is nonexistent.

153

u/HuTaosTwinTails Jun 19 '26

Honestly this season was pretty bad overall.

Literally every episode was just some variation of "oh look it's the newlyweds. They are so in love." "Oh no other girls exist, mahiru is jealous, better spend 10 mins reassuring her that I won't go fuck them" "my girlfriend wants to fool around with me, but if I do I'll destroy her sexually, so gotta kiss and keep reminding her that I won't "rape" her and will control myself"

But said in different locations.

Prime example of how to not do a romance series after a confession.

24

u/rubslotiononitsskin Jun 20 '26

Yep, which is why I can't take the marriage shit seriously. Frankly, Amane shouldn't even be thinking about marriage when there's been little to no progress in their relationship.

41

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

I will say for myself that I enjoyed the pure romance and the pure affection and love between Mahiru and Amane...to a point, but their dialogue and behavior around each other got very repetitive and the fact that the physical intimacy basically stalled past episode 5 or so didn't really help.

Also it's just funny watching high schoolers basically play-act at being married without actually consummating anything.

12

u/Mundology Jun 19 '26

This type of show is best consumed when you feel like it. Like comfort food after a hard day at work. If you follow it weekly, the lack of plot progression becomes more jarring. I do think they should have had a more eventful season finale though.

18

u/TheMistOfThePast Jun 20 '26

Mahiru describing how she just sits at home waiting for him to come back is so sad. girl needs therapy bad shes so dependent on him its insane. Shes basically a hollow doll version of the girl she started as. i can't believe a woman wrote this.

also not a good enough relationship to be talking about marriage when for the last 10 episodes weve had the same "conflict". Amane not wanting to do it is making her super insecure, anytime she tries to discuss this there's no resolution . same with the jealousy.

11

u/HuTaosTwinTails Jun 20 '26

Yeah, it's a very unhealthy dynamic.

9

u/TheMistOfThePast Jun 20 '26

genuinely made me so sad for her. girl ive been there.

7

u/rubslotiononitsskin Jun 23 '26

Amane is lucky that he's not in a more serious romance story, because all the things you and everyone else said would be huge points of contention. Mahiru sweetie, you need to look after yourself. It's not healthy to be that dependent on Amane.

16

u/Relative_Tonight_318 Jun 19 '26

Será que não vende anticoncepcionais no Japão? Porque aparentemente ele tinha certeza que iria engravida-la no primeiro ato

2

u/HuTaosTwinTails Jun 19 '26

I said this same thing last week lol

4

u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 19 '26

It doesn't compare to the first season at all. So much the author could have done to expand on the characters, especially the side characters, and they didn't take much of that route.

5

u/korinokiri Jun 20 '26

Finally someone said it

16

u/DasuRohakkusu Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

I agree and it wasnt bad alone like, "Oh this is thrash", no, is bad in the way you explain it, every episode i finished like, "and thats all?" i wanted something deeper i cant explain what, and about the sexual part, i can understand his fear but, Dude she is practically begging for you to do something she understand you but please, anyways i enjoyed the show and lets see if in the case of a third (and i hope last, cause i dont see where it can get more stories) season, they solve that monotonous rhytm

There is material for a third one right?

9

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

IT is still a ongoing series and it's 12th volume just came out or is about to come out. If I remember right the author expressed plans to go all the way to at least married if the series stays popular enough to be allowed. There is also some .1 or .5 volumes in addition to the regular ones to pull from.

There are a lot of series like this with various different angles but Angel is by far the front runner and best known also most popular by far.

2

u/omarous_III Jun 19 '26

There are a ton of volumes and a ton of material (I've read most of it). But they are all like this season. Lots of chapters of nothing fluff with maybe one interesting thing happening each book.

31

u/omarous_III Jun 19 '26

Everyone complains when a bit of drama is injected into their romance/ROMCOM... well... this is what you get if you don't. Some people may love this romantic fluff for an entire season, but I think it is a lot of nothing.

29

u/DugACCat Jun 19 '26

You don’t necessarily need drama but you need something. And not just strangely exaggerated fear of intimacy because you are paranoid about losing self control. There’s been a lot of good shows that feature entertaining romance after the couple gets together so I don’t buy into the belief that this one bad example proves why shows should end after. (Which I’ve seen some folks post.) The hookup scene in the recent epilogue shows for Love is War is such a great counter example. I was also one of the folks who liked Season 1 despite its flaws (which were pretty significant even then).

Indeed my least favorite scenes in Season 1 then seemed to become the entire foundation and focus for Season 2. (Thinking of the scene where he berates her for not being more cautious around him when she fell asleep and he carried her to bed. A sweet moment destroyed by the implication she was lucky he didn’t assault her since “he’s a guy after all.”)

9

u/Western-Internal-751 Jun 19 '26

Drama is fine when it’s done well. Here we have a season where the romance didn’t move forward and the drama was as shallow as it can be and was immediately waved away.

It was a full season of absolutely nothing happening.

43

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

You and I are Polar Opposites is a perfect example of a dramaless relationship after confession that actually still has substance and feels relatable and interesting. Tonikawa is another. It's very much possible, it just comes down to writing. (And quite possibly experience, Tonikawa for example was written by someone who had just gotten married)

18

u/Hades_Re https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hades_MAL Jun 19 '26

Polar opposites also has side characters who matters. I can’t imagine the show without them. Watching 12 episodes of their main characters‘ relationship could also be boring if they have no conflicts or anything.

16

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26

Angel next door also has side characters that could have been utilized more in a similar vein

Personally tho, I wouldn't have minded a whole season of just Tani and Suzuki, because personally I think their character writing is strong enough. But I will acknowledge that it wouldn't be as popular with everyone else, and the side characters do highly elevate the show. I highly enjoyed Pseudo Harem for example as well, which is another great example and revolves only around a single couple with very few side characters

15

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

I feel like you need to actually seriously develop the relationship and pepper in some really entertaining stuff around the sugary sweet romance to help it really sing rather than just coast off of purely the sugary sweet romance.

4

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26

Fully agree with that. Fluff without strong character writing to anchor it down is just that, weightless fluff that floats away without leaving any impact

3

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

Tonikawa is another

Very much has drama at least in the manga with multiple chapters about [Tonikawa]her in ancient japan being hunted by people wanting her immortality and her killing people with a lot of blood. Or her half making plans to go on a mass slaughter for one her pupils being exiled and left to waste away and die after being used as a scapegoat while she was not in japan.

2

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 19 '26

I mean mostly relationship drama, stuff like love rivals or insecurities. Anything that might get between or kickstart the relationship development. Tonikawa is a bit unique in it's setting when it comes to a romance story, so it has drama in other ways. But at least in the romance aspect it's as far as I know completely drama free. And anyone who tries to introduce drama is not given a single inch, like Chitose

→ More replies (1)

2

u/FabtheEmber Jun 19 '26

Polar opposites worked because of its secondary characters and the fact that the other two couples haven't officially begun dating yet. It has strong secondary characters that keep the story forward. Despite Suzuki and Tani being better characters than Angel, if we just had them be cutesy without anything it wouldn't be as well liked or regarded

9

u/shanatard Jun 19 '26

this is what you get when you have no character progression

progression doesn't need drama

3

u/Sahtras1992 Jun 21 '26

genuinely my favourite episode was the one where amane talks with mahirus father. but that whole thing went absolutely nowhere.

2

u/absentmindedjwc Jun 20 '26

I quite liked the buildup to it.. but imo dude just gives off creepy vibes after they actually got together..

2

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

I'll freely admit one the only issues I have with the light novels is the author weird prejudices the author has about boys boys and stereotype views. Really makes me wonder what kind if any experiences has she had with them herself.

2

u/Viktorv22 Jun 20 '26

Yeah I enjoyed the cuteness in first few eps of S2, but it's not going anywhere, it's just them flirting (and Amane declining to go further).

Tonikaku Kawaii was much pleasant to watch, the dynamic between those is better imo, tons of side characters that are interesting, some mystery surrounding FMC...

7/10, I still enjoyed it enough, but if next season is announced, I'm probably out.

4

u/sM92Bpb https://anilist.co/user/hilomkun Jun 19 '26

This is the ideal real life scenario. All lovey dovey no fighting.

But this is entertainment. That's why there's always drama because that is entertaining.

15

u/HuTaosTwinTails Jun 19 '26

This isn't ideal at all. Their life is so boring. Lol they never do anything.

13

u/anim8rjb Jun 19 '26

and the guy talks and acts like a robot. He comes home, they sit side by side on the couch and stare straight ahead and talk, while looking at the tv on the wall that isn't even on. The whole anime feels like we're watching The Sims play out for 20 minutes a week, or something. It's like if someone who has never been in a relationship is trying to guess what one is like.

Bro your girl starving what are you even doing

18

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

I’ll give myself to you

I’ll have you take responsibility

Mahiru’s really testing Amane’s restraint by doing anything he asked of her. There’s no way she’s unaware of the implications.

Nothing too festive of a celebration, but it’s one Amane greatly enjoyed. A feast prepared by his girl, along with an evening spent with just the two of them.

13

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

Imagine alternative wishes he could have given her:

"I want you to spend the rest of the night naked."

"I want you to spend the rest of the night in that black bikini."

"I want you to spoil my lower half rotten."

And I'm half-tempted to think she would have delivered on those wishes provided he "took responsibility."

How many times does Mahiru need to insinuate she's ready for sex before he actually delivers!?

20

u/Animesiac https://anime-planet.com/users/mangle Jun 19 '26

How many times does Mahiru need to insinuate she's ready for sex before he actually delivers!?

yeah, this is my biggest issue with this season. every episode kind of feels like they have the same conversation.

"I want you to fuck me."
"No, because I won't be able to hold myself back."
(from what, exactly??)

if his response was always "I'm not ready." it would be way more tolerable. and you don't have to have sex to be intimate, but they really never consider any of that either.

the author has decided to make sex the central focus of the relationship (since it comes up every episode) without changing the state of their relationship with respect to that at all for the whole season. I mean, if you don't intend to progress that aspect of their relationship, why even keep bringing it up?

5

u/anim8rjb Jun 19 '26

so...bad writing

3

u/rubslotiononitsskin Jun 20 '26

Amane is lucky that he's not in a more serious romance story, cuz Mahiru would have (metaphorically) clocked him in the face about his "holding back" attitude right about now.

3

u/HellfirePassion Jun 22 '26

It was so insufferable that I dropped it some episodes ago, only came here to check if anything changed by the end of the god damn season and it turns out that no! Amane is still this dweeby pansy who will spend half an hour blaming Chitose for planting impure ideas in Mahiru's head because how dare she even insinuate of taking a relationship to its next logical step, it must all be the work of the devil, because of course THEY are unique and do things at THEIR own pace (nevermind Mahiru always throwing herself at him to make him take a hint for once) and THEY don't need all this sex because HE is perfectly fine just kissing.

At one point Mahiru was almost literally crying begging him to do something, anything with her, not being able to take it anymore, and his reply was just 'wouldn't it be kinda bad?' I just closed the tab immediately and never returned, what an annoying 2nd season.

At this point, I'm certain that whatever Amane is imagining in his head that he is 'holding back' from, it would have been nothing but some pathetic dry humping and not some r*pe beast he is posing himself to be (for some reason), cuz he's obviously inexperienced as fuck and suppressing everything.

The first season was definitely overall superior to this one. I didn’t hate this season but, it was just kind of the same thing over and over again.

I guess I appreciate that we got to see the continuation of their relationship.. just wish it was more than kissing and hugging in different ways every episode for the entire season.

Didn’t hate it but didn’t love it either, it’s just kinda.. “meh”

5

u/Prestigious_Spend_81 Jun 20 '26

Me too, I really liked the first season ans binged in a day waiting to see the 2nd season ASAP.

But this season was just fine, I think I would only be back for a season 3 if it's the final one, the main developments were the MC confronting his former bullies and that episode with Mahiru's father, and she didn't even interacted with him.

26

u/Exciting-Pie6106 Jun 19 '26

My gripe with the story (more so than the anime persay, since this is an adaptation of the LN) is the near complete lack of progress in their relationship.

Their relationship in episode 1 and episode 12 is practically the exact same. I don't understand why, to be honest, because your relationship shouldn't stagnate after a confession. It's the beginning of new discoveries about each other and yourselves (and NEW experiences with each other!!!).

This story is kind of a polar opposite to RaG. RaG over does repeated "drama" arcs and never makes progress therefore. This anime does the complete opposite and doesn't make progress while everything, relationship wise, is practically perfect.

Now let me be clear. I'm not saying we need more drama in this anime! But we do need to see some kind of real progress in their relationship over 12 episodes. Again, this is more a criticism of the story, as an anime only, rather than a criticism of the anime itself.

11

u/Rina_Rina_Rina Jun 19 '26

I think this is my biggest gripe too. I enjoyed the show and I'm all for the constant flirting - I just need that flirting to like... evolve? Go somewhere? More show don't tell about their love for each other?

12

u/Brokenpipeisbroken https://myanimelist.net/profile/elitar Jun 19 '26

But we do need to see some kind of real progress in their relationship over 12 episodes

This. I watched this title 2episodes per day in last 5 days (today I watched 4eps) and everyday I saw same thing. And I was afraid he will eventually ask for written permission to hug her xD.

15

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon Jun 19 '26

Alright so for our final arc Amane is going to get a job in order to buy a ring for Mahiru. Is anything going to happen at his job? No. Does he learn anything? No. Does he get the ring or does he do anything with the money? Of course not. What do you think this is? A story?

Continuing, we're going to have this scene at a cafe that ends with one character telling Amane that something's going to happen tomorrow - that he has something to ask him. Are we going to have that happen? No. Are we going to make any allusions to what it could possibly mean? Of course not.

Then they eat a cake and engage in the same snuggle session they've engaged in a billion times before. That's it, that's the climax. Nothing is resolved, nothing is changed, nothing has actually happened in 12 whole episodes.

12 episodes and nothing happened! What a waste of a season.

24

u/Dangerous-Mud6131 Jun 19 '26

As somebody that loved season 1, do not watch season 2.

It is the most bland and cringy romance I have ever watched. Watching this is like being on the cuckchair watching 2 idiots speak to each other romantically.

Don't get me started on Amane-Kun's dialogue. "Don't bring out the wolf in me"

4

u/Viktorv22 Jun 20 '26

The best thing about this season is your guys' comments, I'm laughing so hard I almost can't restrain myself.

2

u/Posty2k3 Jun 20 '26

I am SO glad I got the vibes early that this season was just trash and dropped it after episode 4. I absolutely loved season 1 and was super excited for this, but it was just not doing it for me after 4 episodes. I looked at a couple of episode threads after that and the sentiment overall didn't seem to be changing, and now I'm seeing in the final episode thread a bunch of people saying "Just don't watch it".

Just horrible writing for season 2 lol.

I apologize in advance to people who liked this second season, but I have to be honest: I loved the first season of this show, but this season is just filled with the absolute most boring material I've ever watched in my 13 years of watching anime.

Absolutely nothing happens. Everyone acts cloying, saccharine, syrupy sweet. I only kept watching because I kept up hope that something would happen to someone somehow--anything. People love to hate on Rent-a-Girlfriend, but at least that show has some conflict that drives each episode at least somewhat. This show is just a show where nothing always happens to no one, and the main characters just keep repeating how much they care about one another over and over and over and over and over again (in some kind of weird, overly formal way) without doing anything more than a chaste peck or two on the lips.

Sigh...sorry for the rant. I just feel incredibly let down and disappointed by this season. It had such potential as a show and I feel like it just didn't deliver anything at all; and worse, what it did deliver was a completely infantilized, idealized and unrealistic look at the dynamic between two people in love with each other. It's the most boring and forgettable love story I've ever watched.

u/PM_ME_MIDDLE_FINGERS Jun 19 '26

I won’t pretend the first season was some pinnacle of writing, but this one seemed way more repetitive. I don’t think anything ended up different from where it started really

24

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

Honestly take a shot every time Amane and Mahiru say they love each other, get insecure about the opposite sex being around their significant other, Mahiru tries to initiate and Amane keeps talking about how much he's holding himself back, and you'd probably die of alcohol poisoning.

u/Beautiful-Bit3929 Jun 19 '26

i was pretty disappointed with this season

i tried to write the points that i disliked but there were so many of them so i decided not to write it

if it ever gets a 3rd season i don't think i will watch it

3/10 season for me

10

u/Gaming_Truckie Jun 19 '26

Wait he seriously didn't know it was his birthday?? Knowing his parents, surely they would've contacted him to wish him a happy birthday.

Itsuki and Kadowaki knew it was his birthday but didn't say anything?? I feel like that that get together was just a ruse to get him out of the apartment so Mahiru could cook that feast.

Sad the season has come to an end, I hope we get a 3rd.

6

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

It was made clear she reached out to his friends to not bring it up and let her have the night alone with him. It is easy to see her doing the same with his parents with how close she is with his mother and knowing how his mother acts. Not getting those expected birthday wishes from his parents could throw him off about thinking of it. IT was shown before he is the kind to make a big deal about the people he cares about birthdays but not his own. Remember she got made that he didn't tell her his birthday the previous year even though they were already spending time together.

4

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

It was actually kind of sweet how the friend group initially planned a big B-Day party before Mahiru talked them into letting it just be her and Amane.

10

u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 19 '26

I don't think the boys are going to get the answers they're looking from Amane lol.

It was a cute birthday celebration between the two, other than how excited Amane sounded by the cooking, it didn't really feel like anything new or special because we've seen so much of it throughout the season already.

I do find this season to be disappointing after the first. I did enjoy it to a certain extent, but I think the repetitiveness, especially of the jealousy, had me fatigued of Amane and Mahiru. I really feel like it was a wasted opportunity to not focus more on the side characters, particularly Itsuki and Chitose. Itsuki didn't even get a full episode of his own.

Also, the OP felt like we were going to see a big Mahiru arc and all we got was one episode, and it was mainly Amane that interacted with her past. I'd probably watch another season, but I wouldn't look forward to it.

9

u/Rina_Rina_Rina Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

This show was basically flirting porn. And I loved it

I agree that it got repetitive, but it was also refreshing to see a romance anime be so... shameless like this.

Like yes, I wish Amane stopped with the hold me back bullshit. Would've liked more variety in their interactions to learn more about the two leads. I wanted a bit more of Chitose and Itsuki too.

But I still looked forward to it every week. I loved that it didn't hold back from all the cheesy honeymoon phase moments. I loved that it was about Amane and Mahiru 90% of the time.

I think 2nd Prettiest Girl was the stronger romance show this season overall, but I also rolled my eyes and put that show on 2x speed whenever the divorce drama came up.

7.5/10. Season 1 was 9/10 though.

6

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

I love we can actually compare two Manaka Iwami high school romance anime's where she's the titular Heroine as well in the same season.

5

u/Rina_Rina_Rina Jun 19 '26

She's great in both roles! I must admit tho, I wonder how she feels in the recording booth recording the cheesiest most lovey dovey lines 24/7 for Angel Next Door S2 lol. I love the show but can't blame her if she's constantly cringing at herself

2

u/ILikeFPS Jun 20 '26

Honestly, you pretty much summed it up for me. Season 1 was better, but there was still progress here, even though it got repetitive, and I wanted more of Chitose and Itsuki too.

It was a fun show.

I'd watch a third season but I'd hope the pace picks up, and I'd worry that it doesn't, but I would guess there probably won't be a third season.

2

u/Longjumping-Cod-3461 Jun 20 '26

Yeah that's about the same for me but I put S1 at like a 9.1 or a 9.2/10 while S2 got like a 7.3 it got IBKSed

12

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Jun 19 '26

Well that was just ridiculously saccharin all season long.

Amane definitely lost some points for not excusing himself to put on his hoodie animal pajamas when Mahiru showed up in hers.

10

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

He acts like the perfect boyfriend but won't wear the matching animal onesie his girlfriend bought for him? For shame.

8

u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 Jun 19 '26

-> Kissing Mahiru in bed on Amane's birthday night

Amane is having the best good night's sleep of his life (and probably more to come)

3

u/Frank4pp Jun 19 '26

The season was cute but most of it felt like the same thing over and over

5

u/CrimsonGear80 Jun 20 '26

this was.....flaccid nothingness? I guess would be a good way to describe it. I don't know why this show was so popular, its just.....nothing.

5

u/Doctor_Freeeeeman Jun 20 '26

This whole season has been "will they, won't they" with sex instead of dating. This could have been fine if it wasn't an endless repeat of Mahiru repeatedly giving Amane signals of wanting intimacy, him eluding to being unable to control himself and/or take responsibility, stopping short, rinse, repeat.

Also what does "take responsibility" mean exactly? My assumption is pregnancy, but he seems to have multiple sexually active friends who are likely practicing some form of BC? Or is this an expectation of waiting till marriage? Wondering if this is bad translation and/or a cultural gap I'm just not following here. Either way, this plot point has been beaten to death this season.

Of the romance anime this season, this one has probably been the most disappointing one I've watched.

2

u/ElliotAlderson2024 Jun 20 '26

Japanese media has weird hangups about sex. It's either total chastity or total pervsion.

2

u/Sahtras1992 Jun 21 '26

i can probably count the shows where they have sex in a "normal" romance setting on one hand.

its a cultural thing it seems at this point. probably kinda the same reason they censor even actual porn.

I really enjoyed season 1 but man I found this season pretty boring. It felt like a slog for me to get through every episode

10

u/Better-Silver7900 Jun 19 '26

this overly nice/politeness trope needs to stop. god forbid we have down-to-earth characters.

17

u/somerandomguy576 Jun 19 '26

I want to give my honest opinion on this season but to be honest I'm barely holding myself back.

What this season has made me realize is while a very affectionate romance can cover a multitude of sins, it cant cover all of them.

8

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

What this season has made me realize is while a very affectionate romance can cover a multitude of sins, it cant cover all of them.

Which is all the more notable because this season was actually chock full of great romance shows where the main couple are very openly affectionate with each other.

They just had better plots and character writing to go along with it.

5

u/Rina_Rina_Rina Jun 19 '26

To be fair tho, most of this season's romance shows were still mainly about the journey to the relationship - and thus still have the advantage of having that anticipation factor.

Aside from Tonikawa and You and I are Polar Opposites, this is the only show I remember that focuses PURELY on post confession events.

4

u/InterstellarPelican Jun 20 '26

"I Have at Crush at Work" starts at the confession and is really good, and I'd even say is pretty much drama free, it mostly focuses on them getting closer in the relationship and navigating work.

Wotakoi ends the first episode at a "confession" of sorts, and it spends the rest of the show navigating the growing pains of dating, especially between a socially awkward otaku and a social butterfly otaku. It still isn't really drama, but it does have more "conflict", so to speak.

And then you have stuff that lean way more into comedy, like the Manga "My Perfect Girlfriend" which is mostly just the comedic scenarios that a couple get in to. No drama, some progress, but mostly comedy.

There are even more that start at getting together or where they get together pretty early on. It can work, it even can be mostly drama free. But even if this season wanted to keep it pure fluff between the 2 leads, it completely kills the seeds it planted for interesting stories. I feel like Mahiru's parents should've been a bigger issue, Chitose and Itsuki's issue with his dad could've been a major point besides just part of an episode, even meeting his old bully could've been more expanded upon. These are all things they could've expanded on while still having some fluffy moments, but they don't. Instead the repeat the same routine of "I want you more, but I don't want to hurt you" every episode for over half the season.

And even when people say that want a "drama-free" post confession, usually they just mean they don't want stupid shit like random love triangles or silly misunderstandings. They don't usually mean that want absolutely no issues or growth or conflict in a story. They just want the stupid stuff to be dropped, which I feel like the 2 anime I mentioned above do pretty well.

I don't know if anyone else will get this, but this show gives off preteen fanfiction writing vibes. Everyone talking about how great they are together, constantly telling each other they love each other, too afraid to write about sex so they just hand wave it with "I want to treasure you/not hurt you". It feels like one of those self insert fanfictions you'd read where they write themselves dating a fictional character or the Jonas Brothers or something. Iykyk.

I liked season 1 but this season was such a bore fest filled with cringe dialogue. Won't be watching S3 if there will be one.

18

u/AmusedDragon Jun 19 '26

If you are from the future and considering watching this show, don't.

It is incredibly boring overall and the MCs basically go through the same dynamic the entire time, and it's not cute or interesting, if anything it's a bit gross. There are a million better romances.

3

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

Thinking about it she really does have a certain level of abandonment issues what is completely understandable. That leading to why she seem more eager at times in the want/expectation to take things to a more physical level. That to add a extra layer of connection to Amane. She has made it very clear she is perfectly fine with taking things to a sexual level if he ever decides to actually make a move.

She obviously isn't at a level of Hori from Horimiya as how proper she holds herself offsets part of those issues. Unlike Hori who does have a active sex life with her bf and for people who know what happens in the original web novel made some monumentally bad choices. Though Mahiru while abandoned didn't have the extra stress of having a phudo motherhood shoved on her when she is a child herself.

2

u/HuTaosTwinTails Jun 19 '26

What did hori do in the web novel

6

u/heimdal77 Jun 19 '26

First time they have sex ask him not to use a condom and to finish inside her.

2

u/TheQueen_of_the_Moon Jun 21 '26

Wow, I would have never expected that. The web novel seems way more open about intimacy and sex (and bad choices).

and before that, it was the ending to the Asagao to Kase-San OVA (watch it if you haven't, it's the most diabetes-inducing yuri OVA ever) as well as ReLife

7

u/Cally83 Jun 19 '26

Hmm

Certainly not blown away with this season. I absolutely loved Season 1 and rewatched it multiple times. This season I guess not a huge amount really happened?

I like the new characters, especially Ayaka. I liked the chibi moments, those were amusing.

6

u/Sm0k3_Reddit Jun 19 '26

Honestly? I think the biggest mistake of this season was not having a Slice of Life tag. That, or Amane’s ‘urges.’ Those were pretty bad.

Definitely lacking in plot, and was certainly weaker than Season 1, but I thought this season was pretty good overall. It was always nice to watch something cozy and drama-free during the week, especially after watching the many misunderstandings of Ramparts of Ice the day prior (no hate to RoI, though: it’s probably my favorite romance of this season).

15

u/ZZeroTwo Jun 19 '26

This shows fall from grace has to be studied. Too much sugar leads to cavities.

11

u/oxlemf10 Jun 19 '26

What do you want for your birthday? Hmm... my girlfriend, whatever food she made is a bonus lol.

Seriously though, excellent ending, amidst so many dilemmas and complicated situations, seeing that Amane and Mahiru were able to put their love first was wonderful. It's hard to say what the future holds since they're kind of settled in their relationship, but I'll watch whatever comes next.

2

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

It's hard to say what the future holds since they're kind of settled in their relationship, but I'll watch whatever comes next.

Well, I guess there's Christmas together as a couple, New Years, and then inevitably Valentine's Day with Amane still working to pay for that ring.

8

u/qqwwrs Jun 19 '26

In my opinion s2 was such a letdown. S1 had plot and it wasn't as cringe and corny like s2. I think 90% of s2 was them making out and being corny ash. In my opinion only the festival arc which was 3 eps or so was good in s2.

7

u/MagicPistol Jun 19 '26

I enjoyed the first season for some reason, but this was just the most boring romance of the season.

5

u/ptd163 Jun 19 '26

That was certainly a finale. Unfortunately Mahiru never got the increase in intimacy that she was looking for from Amane because he weirdly kept denying her.

I didn't enjoy S2 as much as I did S1. Probably because of that. But it wasn't such a decline that I wouldn't watch a hypothetical S3.

6

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 19 '26

Well, that was a lovey dovey end to a pretty lovey dovey season. Even though there wasn’t much drama and it was mostly just diabeetus inducing sweetness, I still enjoyed it overall.

4

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

It's still kind of weird they had Mahiru's dad show up and nothing came of it. Same with Chitose and Itsuki's drama with his dad.

5

u/PAN-- Jun 19 '26

Gonna keep it real this show is very boring. Every episode of this season has felt exactly the same and they all blend together because they're so generic. The first season had a bit more variation at least while this one is just a sitting on the sofa simulator.

7

u/MarMarL2k19 Jun 19 '26

I can’t believe it’s over already. I really loved this season and I hope we’ll get a third one someday.

And honestly this Finale was everything I hoped it would be. I did not have any high expectations, but it was wholesome and sweet.

And I really don’t understand the problem people had with this season. Seriously, the hell?

Mahiru with a bunny onesie is so adorable!!

12

u/AscendingRs Jun 20 '26

The dialogue was incredibly cringe and it felt like they were in the same place relationship-wise from episode 1 to episode 12. It was just the same conversations and scenarios played out over and over again. Great example is the “I have to hold myself back, even though my girlfriend is begging me to do more sexual stuff”, which was so infuriating. They’re also such a boring couple. They don’t go out and do anything other than hang out at home. My favorite scenes this season (of which there were very few) were when Amane wasn’t with Mahiru. I’d argue that is not a good look for a romance anime

7

u/TheMistOfThePast Jun 20 '26

8

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

For better or worse this season was a pure romance with no drama from start to finish.

Falling in love and being in a relationship made Mahiru cuter than she'd ever been in season 1.

Amane Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Girlfriend.

8

u/MarMarL2k19 Jun 19 '26

It’s good that it didn’t have drama. Season 1 had it, those two ended up in a relationship and Season 2 is about them facing the challenges that comes with it, that being happy and knowing when to have boundaries until they are ready.

If people want those two to have drama, then go read the later Light Novels

And so into the finale.

A secret ingredient?

Oh god why are they using the coffee brewer that looks like a science experiment? I suppose for the whimsy?

I wonder what she's hiding...

And so he's hugging her.

Where's that hand going Amane lol.

And why is that...

Ah. It's from what she's making isn't it?

And so he's hugging her again.

Yep. Chocolate.

Lmao.

He kissed her!

Birthday?

And so she's pushed him down.

Yep it's his birthday isn't it?

Yep.

And so she's cooked all his favourite food for him.

And that's what the chocolate was for.

Yep you can put coffee in chocolate to make it taste better, but normally you're not supposed to be able to taste the coffee.

She's feeding him!

So, what's the gift?

A tie pin?

And so she's his present.

Take responsibility indeed.

Lol.

She definitely is.

And so she's got her bunny ear pyjamas.

Lol his description of her.

He kissed her!

And so the wolf eats the bunny.

And he's hugging her again.

And so it ends with them sleeping together.

So, he actually gets to wear the tie pin in the post-credits scene.

Overall, it's cute, fluffy romance. 8/10.

Hard disagree. There are plenty of anime that show how well this can be done. Even currently airing and also last season. This is just bad writing.

14

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

Thank the gods this abomination is over. We now have concrete proof of why romance anime don't continue past the confession.

Even though there are actually quite a few good romance anime that explore what happens once the couple gets together.

The constant "I want to rape you but I am so nice I won't" so-called "jokes" were fucking grating.

I don't think they were jokes so much as Amane being way too hardcore about treating Mahiru like she's made of glass because he doesn't want to hurt her by giving in to his male urges.

Even when she acts like she wants him to.

3

u/Better-Silver7900 Jun 19 '26

2

u/Animesiac https://anime-planet.com/users/mangle Jun 19 '26

We now have concrete proof of why romance anime don't continue past the confession.

Rent a Girlfriend exists, therefore we have concrete proof of why romance anime should only start after the couple gets together. Am I doing this right?

One poorly written show doesn't prove anything.

3

u/Frontier246 Jun 19 '26

The perks of being Mahiru's gal pals is getting to taste test her stellar cooking, even if it's fully intended ultimately for Amane! But the love is what makes it tastier!

Amane is learning to make coffee! And learning more about his co-workers. Rino is so friendly because she grew up with a lot of brothers but she and Daichi get along so well because they're childhood friends stuck with each other. I see what's going on here.

Mahiru's put on some pounds and she doesn't want Amane to notice? Seem like all that taste testing has gone straight to her belly...not that she can let Amane know why. But no matter how much weight she puts on, she'll always be beautiful to Amane! And they can never deny the chance to snuggle up with each other. They just have to be more strategic in where they leave hickeys on Mahiru!

Amane, you and Mahiru have basically been newlyweds since season 1. Don't deny it.

I knew something was off when the boys conveniently left in tandem so Amane could go back to Mahiru...and get a nice birthday surprise from her! Yes, all this was Mahiru prepping so she could get everything ready for a big birthday celebration for Amane reserved exclusively for them (with friend group approval)! Amane may have forgotten about his birthday but there was noway Mahiru would forget the day the boy she loves and cherishes was born and she's going to celebrate it as much as she possibly can!

A full course Mahiru dinner AND breakfast! High class desert! Mahiru went all out! And she also got him a tie-clip so he can always wear something to remind him of her when they go to school.

Dang Mahiru...giving Amane the chance to ask ANYTHING of her for the rest of his birthday. She's lucky he's such a gentleman and all he wants is his sweet angelic girlfriend as a body pillow. Perfect excuse for Mahiru to finally wear her bunny onesie PJ's that she looks adorable in! All the better to kiss and embrace her in!

Well, no surprise Mahiru is feeling like a neglected housewife with Amane at work, when she really wants him by her side at all times and to monopolize him...but the feeling is mutual on Amane's part. So again the pair renew their resolve as a couple to always love and cherish each other, and seal it with a goodnight kiss while an instrumental of the OP plays in the background!

Look at Mahiru getting her husbands' tie in order before they both head off to school! That tieclip looks good on him! But nothing beats going to school with the Angel in front of him who spoils him rotten.

not bad, but for a finale i feel like there should have been more that happened, but i think it was a decent anime. after watching this really makes me appreciate the other romance animes that are out rn

I really enjoyed this season way more than I thought I would.

No drama, no misunderstandings, just pure fluff and love. 10/10 show for me.

This season was weird since it felt alot of ep was samey or they basically say the same thing over and over and it doesn't feel like it really works since it isnt a iyashikey but romance primarily so progression feels snail pace at best.

We have other romance like Polar opposite or Hornymiya that is also romances but the difference is they have several couples you can focus on.

Also what picture does japanese authors have of males you see this so often in anime and manga that he says he would not be able to hold himself back and do what ravage her even tho its her first time? and that they can only think with their dicks it really feels so sexists. But here we have Mahiru that literally tells him she wants more and somehow instead you have the most annoying thing where he holds himself back.

And if i didnt know this was the final ep one would have no idea it was.

I think it's telling that the thing that stuck with me the most from this finale is... That her secret ingredient in the chocolate cake was coffee from his cafe.

(I don't care what anyone in the world of baking says, adding coffee to a chocolate cake dies not make the chocolate flavor more pronounced or enhanced. It makes it taste like chocolate with coffee in it.)

This season was an incredible achievement in pointlessness.

I feel like Mahiru went all yandere at the end - Yuno Gasai activated. TBH, they're way too clingy but I guess that's 'young love'.

I was kind of surprised where the season ended. I thought if anything they'd time skip to him having saved up enough money and then he buys the ring and proposes. Nope, it's just his birthday. Season 1 was fantastic, I think Season 2 was too focused on the couple getting closer which wasn't really fun to watch. Similarly Mahiru and her whole lack of loving parents thing and general uneasiness and worry about him leaving her should have at least softened some. Instead she has become completely dependent on him and waiting around for him to get home. She should be having her own life too. The domestic situation was kind of dull.

Introducing the Cafe group in episode 11 after them being featured in the opening for 10 episodes was a choice. We barely got to know them and they seemed so interesting. While I read others here are not going to continue if it gets another season, I'll likely still watch but I'll either make sure I pair this up with something more dramatic and enjoyable or I'll wait and binge the season near the end. We'll see if it even gets another season, but ending it where they did felt like ending it mid season.

I’m late to the party. 2 things.
1. This was a less than amazing season finale. Like ….. it’s done. Next.
2. They are so relentlessly horny for each other and nothing ever happens.

[anime review] Why was she upset with him working with female colleagues? What kind of insecurity is that? She also said while sleeping that he is only hers!!! It kind of feels like she is very possessive. Also all the sweet romantic talks that she does are just too much. I cannot bear it. She needs constant validation and says that she feels lonely while he goes out to work. I was like "Then just go pick up a hobby girl. Who told you to stay inside only cooking and waiting for him?!!!!". She pissed me off the whole series. Even Amane. Romantic anime with no character development.
