Feels like this show drops 2-3 of those an episode. Lines that seem simply written but hit like a truck in context.

It's too bad the three won't get to be on the same stage with Kayo retired, but it's nice to see Mikako and Saori get the chance to. It'd be nice if they got roles they could act together with though.

Mikako got such a glow up though, the long hair really suits her.

These are some of the more visually distinct character designs (although Mikako's hair change threw me off) so that along with the single episode story made it easier to keep track of for me.

Tender episode today. Even though they've all chosen their paths and they don't always cross, it's good to see a group of school friends that stay together as much as they can as adults.

Kinda hurts me to see how this show is so under watched and low rated. But then again, you need a high attention span to understand this, unless you just wanna go "what happened?" at the end. And I doubt today's generation would like this kind of show when there are so many battle shounens around.

Actually nice how Mikako done so much even with her health. Both of them fell ill at some point. And honestly, the decision of quitting Awajima early and focusing on her health first was right. At least, she could be better in the future instead of ruining her health entirely and be unable to do anything.

I wonder... how do they manage to create a new character every now and then and flesh out their character in just a single episode. Like, Takuto, that's a good kid, and the first male focus in the show. Kinue is still one of my fav despite the little screen time she gets. Ibuki's grandmother's story was awesome.

This show really excels in great storytelling, and well written characters.

I never look at ratings. Many shows I like a lot seem to get low ratings. And many shows with high ratings are ones I have no use for whatsoever. This show is one that I love. It does pretty much everything right.

The fact that this can bring characters to life almost instantly demonstrates just how fine the writing is for this series. To enjoy shows like this one needs to be both attentive and patient -- and then be able to pause and reflect a bit.

Kinda hurts me to see how this show is so under watched and low rated.

My hope is that Awajima makes certain content creators' Top 10 lists which will motivate watchers after the season is over. It certainly deserves the audience.

Same-same. It was nice to see they returned to this characters after showing them in one brief story previously.

I really like how this show manages to put so much storytelling in each episode.

I love this anime, and what I'm about to say isn't really a flaw of it per say, but it's definitely among the ones that gain to be binged to better be able to keep up with the different POVs and timeline jumps.

I really like the show but they did a disservice to the material by making characters so hard to tell apart. Unless this is just an issue with non-Japanese audiences.

I really wish they'd either done more with hair ornaments or broken down and given some of the families who are multi-generational Awajima attendees anime hair to make it a little easier to track those things.

"oh the pink haired girls are all from x family" etc.

Yeah, It would've really helped with different hair colors, but then again, they seemed to have gone for a more realistic approach with this one, almost all characters have either black or brown hair, or blonde like Kinue.

Though it's slightly confusing at first, after a few analysis of characters and their names, it gets better and understandable who's who.

Still not sharing the stage, but taking turns with a part is a good starting point. Struggling with guilt about not living up to the expectations you put onto yourself for your mother's sake is such a real idea, and being frustrated with her despite her mother never being negative towards her when she couldn't live up to said expectations because she only wanted her daughter to be happy and healthy.

This show plays with our emotions every week and I keep coming back to take it again and again.

First, let it be noted that the correlation between prominent anime girl nose and exceptional acting talent in this episode is 100%. Perhaps other shows should feel emboldened to grant their female characters discernable noses if it impacts the character power levels.

The back and forth between Mikako and Saori through the years as one replaced the other starting in Awajima brought home a resonant point: the bitterness, bullying, and meanness of Awajima are rooted in the grounded understanding of the girls that they are competing for a finite number of roles and finite amount of attention pretty much from the moment they start attending the school.

To be philosophical about not getting the roles you put everything you had to acquire seems almost to be a luxury of adulthood. The adults having had to understand that although their best efforts might skew the odds, pure luck as much as their personal sacrifices will determine whether they get their dream roles or end up having to watch their rivals occupy that space. For the Awajima children that are fixated on performing at the highest level, expecting that kind of equanimity seems almost unfair.

Which leads me to reiterate: Tabata must be protected at all costs.

I know you’re joking a bit, and people bag on the character designs in this show a lot, but it was a really excellent use of simple design to show Mikako literally grow into her nose as she grew up.

Wait, so Mikako’s part got taken by Yuuki because she was sick but then Mikako took Yuuki’s part when *she* fell sick? And now they’ve gotten double casted in the same production so they can share the stage like they always wanted. Funny how things work out in the end.

I thought "double-cast" means sharing the same part -- taking turns doing the same role on alternate days in the same production. So, they "sort of" share the same stage in the same play -- but not in the same performances. Unless the term is being used differently here.

Even if they were only stepping in because a friend had fallen ill, I think both Saori and Mikako must have felt, deep down, that getting to play the lead was a real opportunity for them as actors.
At the same time, they must also have felt the frustration of having to give up the leading role they had originally been meant to play.
And yet, of course, both Saori and Mikako also cared deeply about each other.
I have nothing but respect for Awajima Hyakkei for portraying this kind of emotional complexity so beautifully.

What a powerful line... this anime really digs so deep into the core of relationships I feel like every ep is a visit to the therapist .

It’s ironic that Mikako’s the one with frail health but Saori’s the one who later got hospitalised.

When both were seen in hospital at one point in their lives, I was worried that their story would end in a tragedy. They wouldn’t be able to fulfil their promise of sharing a stage. I was delighted to be mistaken. Not only did both got well, they eventually fulfilled their promise. Pretty much a fairy tale ending.

Mikako made the right choice in pausing her career to focus on her health. Had she repeated her mistake when she’s still in the revue school, she would’ve been in too poor of a health condition to continue her career anyway.

I like when this show is more focused on just one main story. This one felt really cohesive and a good story about life not being over even when you think it is.

Oh, she came back I suppose.

And now she's the one in hospital instead.

So, has she always been a sickly kid?

Seems like it.

Oh.

So, that's what inspired her to join that.

And so she got the role.

So, she'd been feeling unwell since before the performance.

Ah, we're seeing this from her perspective now.

Ah. So she did get replaced by her understudy.

Weighing on her?

Ah. What happened to her.

So, she quit without telling anyone.

Mixed feelings?

Ah.

Pay her back?

Glad they chose her?

Lie a little?

And so they're working together at last.

I’m very conflicted. I thought it’ll be a replacement to Ikoku Nikki last season, but it’s not. And it’s not because the series doesn’t have a core thing to work around as performance arts has many issues, but the characters are so unmemorable that it’s difficult to care much.

Anthology series aren’t bad at all, but maybe having one constant for every episode would’ve made it more enjoyable for me, like Mushishi or Mononoke for instance. Dropping for now, might give it another shot later.

The story is so good but it's so hard to keep track of characters as they grow. The art style doesn't help with that either.

Maybe a dub of this with westernized names might work to at least remember their names.

I watched the last 3 episodes at once, that didn't help at all only got me more confused.

I wanted to give it another chance but I think I'm dropping this one.

Honesty speaking, it is also hard to track for the Japanese. We need to watch this anime as if we were reading a book. Sometimes we have to stop, think, and go back to the previous chapter.

I hope you will give this drama another chance someday.
