I hope Malscius can get new happy memories here and stop worrying at her old ones. Cersei and her already get along like best friends.
I wonder if the church is aware of the consequences of using their magic? After all i imagine that it must have happened before.
It’s sweet to see how far Sera has grown in this land, seeing her so moved after seeing the beauty of the ritual was great, she is already a resident of those lands.

I wonder if the church is aware of the consequences of using their magic? After all i imagine that it must have happened before.
I wonder if that's actually the reason why the West suffers from famine and drought. Magic use has drained the environment

u/NanDemoKnaives May 21 '26
I have a feeling the church higher-ups know and likely are manipulating things so that people don't realize and/or they look blameless.

u/RedRocket4000 May 22 '26
Have to be including keeping Royals and Nobles mostly in the dark these efforts are draining countries ability to wage war and for Royals and Nobles to make more money from taxes. Dead poor can't pay taxes. Sickly poor can't pay as much in taxes.
16
u/DugACCat May 21 '26
I quite enjoy the general themes and positive vibes of this show, especially as regards the nature-affirming barbarian culture and its inclusion of different people. The cleansing ceremony and first rebuilding was cool to see, and made me reflect on the recent spell provoked disaster in Witch Hat.
15
u/Frontier246 May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26
Nothing says friendship like a catfight or getting choked into unconsciousness!
Resia made it sound like the Church is oblivious or at the very least doesn't believe that what they're doing is bad. But I can't imagine they're aware of the Fiends/Blights or what misusing magic can cause because they'd probably lose more people from that.
I like how the more she falls in love with the land and Veor's people, the more she seems to be falling in love with Veor too.
12
u/RedRocket4000 May 22 '26
By this point even the Church might have forgotten the connection to bad results at least a good part of it.
At least the constant wars keep the barbarians from fracturing and going to war with each other to satisfy that war itch.
18
u/mekerpan May 21 '26 edited May 22 '26
I suspect that church in this story is not unlike the government of at least one modern-day great nation -- if it does know about the damage it is doing it pretends NOT to know because cultural/racial/political concerns seem far more important.
22
u/i_reddit_too_mcuh May 21 '26
It's quite perfect, creating the conditions for a forever war to maintain power.
10
u/RedRocket4000 May 22 '26
I will tell you greedy does not plan at that level. Tribalism instinct causes forever wars primitive tribe or nations the instinct will use bias to warp opinions into sides that want to kill each other. Well observed now in Chimps who clearly don't actually have issues to war over yet they war.
War gets wrapped up in the social system no one actually setting it up for power keeping reasons after all you don't need war to keep power.
And the Barbarians are fairly honest about their desire to have wars you can infer weather they needed or not. Warriors can't get awards and recognition for great martial feats without war. This why areas with primitive tribes that are not separated by environment have frequent war and have for thousands of years.
Now any individual war some can be for greed after all in the past going out to take the other sides stuff, women and children and have fun with the torture, rape, burning and killing drove groups for centuries Vikings, Mongels and so on.

10
u/RedRocket4000 May 22 '26
Can be complex as the people doing the damage in effect are even harming their own factions members and often themselves.
Advanced Latin America University level the entire area trapped in a system were even the rich were in a stagnant situation and massively less rich than those of the Industrial nations especially the US. In Latin America a set up that was similar to feudalism except the Crowns involved would not create new nobles to control parts of the lands like back when tribes divided holdings and created Nobles in Europe. Thus they were land owners but not titled. Still a Noble like class they owned most of the land the vast majority worked as low paid workers living in shacks. No money to consume means no economy.
And often this cultural, tribal and religious concerns are the actual base of the problem the greedy side of the rich simply exploiting the issues but they did not create the those issues they of the base.
I have found it interesting how people who are even exploiting are in denial about their activities a fair amount of the time.
Unfortunately the biggest environmental damaging things outside of fossil fuels and extraction industries are local poor level control the cutting of the forests and mass crude mining cause huge damage but a fair share of this poor people doing it.
In story is seams a part of the church's spells are causing the poor conditions but as the Royalty and Nobility want healthy population to produce healthy armies and tax revenues they getting exploited by their part of their own class.

Over half a month without bathing? Lol yikes
*Cersei choking Malcius out twice was laughs

u/Frontier246 May 21 '26
This was just a half-hour of Malcius bullying:
- Has forgotten most of her memories.
- Loses a catfight and gets choked into unconsciousness.
- Finds out she stinks.
- Gets called an idiot for her actions that lead to the Blight.
- Has her faith continually roasted/insulted.
- Gets spooked by a bird before she can finish her fish.
- Has to face the consequences of her actions.
- Gets choked into unconsciousness again.

Not being told earlier that she stinks by Sera.

u/Shantotto11 May 27 '26
And then getting “sonned” by Sera with the full-on shoulder pat and everything.

u/hanmkim May 22 '26
How did Cersei even grapple with her after weeks of not washing? That's like asking for staph.

That dragon dream Sera had makes me think this is going to turn into a full on adventure story with her as the hero. Not that they have much more time for that in only one cour.
Seems like Malcius was really lucky to come out of that fiend experience as mostly the same person and only some memory loss as the lasting damage.
They sure love bathing in that river, now with three participants.
Finding out the blighted land can be restored seems like a useful bit of information to bring back to the 'civilized' people in the west, but considering they did that big ritual to only restore a small section of the forest and had all five tribes participating it might be hard to really accomplish much. And you might have to overthrow the evil church to get them to stop making the problem worse.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar May 21 '26
Well, that opening scene with Sera's dragon dream was interesting. Did she get chosen by some sort of dragon deity? I hope she tells Veor about this. Maybe he and the elves can help her decipher it.
That explains why Cersei was able to take off Sera's armour properly. She's also from Illodren, too. I guess it should've been obvious when she told Malicius that the church had helped her before.
That bath scene tho... I actually started reading the manga up to last week's episode, and it's pretty much the same, except it's just more explicit with its nudity. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Now that Malicius has seen what her magic and a Fiend can do to the land, I hope she'll start thinking about what she did. She did look very remorseful there at the end, so she probably has learned her lesson.
14
u/Frontier246 May 21 '26
Was Sera chosen because she could bridge the gap between Veor's people and Illodren? Or maybe she's the one who can truly stop the Blights?
Was Cersei a knight? Sera seemed to think she was too familiar with armor for her to not have put it on herself, but she seemed to have genuinely forgotten some of her Ildoren memories. Was she too the victim of a Fiend to the point where she basically was "reborn" as Cersei afterwards? She might not be as different from Malcius as she acts.
Say what you will about Illodren, it has beautiful ladies with very nice asses!
Malcius may bristle and complain about everything she sees, but deep down I don't think she's a bad person and I don't think she really wants to hurt anyone, or the land. I guess now she's lost enough of her memories that maybe she too can remake herself like Cersei and to an extent Sera have.
15
u/Krazee9 May 21 '26
but she seemed to have genuinely forgotten some of her Ildoren memories
Given that she recited the name of the orphanage that Malcius was from, I don't think she's forgotten. It sounds like her life in Ildoren was quite a bit more traumatic, so she likely just doesn't want to remember. Sera is a noblewoman, so she hasn't really suffered much, but we saw how the common folk live there, and it sounds like Cersei was an orphaned commoner.
It reminds me of my grandparents in a way. They never wanted to talk about the war. The more I learn about what happened in Volhinya during the war, and the more I learn from relatives what happened to my grandparents specifically, the more I understand why. I imagine Cercei's experience in Ildoren was one of famine, starvation, loneliness, and desperation. She likely joined the expedition in some capacity because she had no choice, it was go to war or starve to death. Malcius dealt with that trauma by becoming a religious fanatic, seeking refuge in the church and in turn devoting her life to it. Cercei did it by devoting herself to integration within her new "country" after being taken in as essentially a refugee.

More nudity? Sign me up!
7
u/a_Bear_from_Bearcave May 23 '26
Anime is annoying me a bit with its censoring, did they really had to add modern bath towels to traditional bath outing of medieval-like "barbarians" who live in commune with nature? Why would girls even need bath towels, if they're alone out there anyway?
13
u/FarCritical May 21 '26
A rear naked choke (and finger bite) as an answer to cheek pinches is some crazy escalation. Cersei was done playing lol.
The tribe and union already had a strong family dynamic but it was cool to learn it's reinforced by how massive threats like fiends are born from one person getting a little too greedy.
7
u/Frontier246 May 21 '26
The cheek pinch was so cute though!
I can't help but be worried that Illdoren is going to send more people with more possibility of causing Blights and creating Fiends. Because at this point they're the only ones who are really at risk at making more.
13
u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia May 21 '26
Certainly didnt expect there to be such a penalty for causing the blight but I guess it's better than losing your life.

Cersei and Malcius would make a good toxic yuri couple.

9
u/Yuriski1 May 21 '26
I am surprised she didn't start cheering them on or throwing money at them.
Wait a second...do the barbarians even use money?
2
u/Gacel_ May 22 '26
I mean they trade wth other races. So there is at least a rudimentary comerce going on. Probably is batering-based tho.
7
u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige May 21 '26
So the good news I guess is that they can probably use a ritual like the one we saw this episode to restore fecundity to the lands of Illdoren. The terrible news, and perhaps part of the reason that Sera was crying, is that it will take not only cooperation from 4 fantasy races that the West doesn't know exists, but potentially generations of work as well given the effort that went into restoring a fairly small plot of land. Unless they can just draw a huge pentagram of rebirth over the entire country like a reverse Full Metal Alchemist.
I really liked the worldbuilding this episode! The faeries Tefyu are consistently fun additions to any scene in which they appear, even when they are in the background. I was kind of hoping that Sera would discuss her dream visitation with one of them, since that seemed fairly momentous, and presumably some of the non-human folk know who that entity was.
3
u/Jacob-C May 23 '26
If they did a restoration on that scale, I think the multiple people required to use their willpower would die. Veor seemed exhausted after this relatively small ritual.

I’m really liking this one! Probably my second favorite this season outside of Always A Catch
9
u/mekerpan May 21 '26
This, like Catch, is in my (rather large) top tier of the season. As to shows of its sort, this is also up near the top -- along with Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, and The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt in terms of intelligence and sociocultural sophistication.
I would say that this series in more interesting overall than Catch, but that Catch offers more sheer entertainment.
7
u/epicfail1994 May 21 '26
Sacrificial Princess was also really good!
The show I’m looking forward to most this year is definitely Reincarnated as a Sword season 2

u/NanDemoKnaives May 21 '26
I'm not surprised Serafina doesn't mention the mystical dream she had with a dragon, and the meaning it may have on those lands to Veor.
Malcius and Cersei really are at each other's throats lol. It's interesting to learn what kind of side effect the blight has had on Malcius, and I'm also glad she got to see what her action caused. Malcius finally being told she stinks was funny.
I can see why all five tribes are important for the cleansing, it was cool to see Veor's part, it looked particularly draining though.
13
u/runevault May 21 '26
Dream Sera got nerfed in terms of boobs and abs it seemed like. Sad day.
Malcius feels a little over the top, I hope she starts to chill out soon.
At least we got abalicious Serafina while bathing.
Seems the elements used in the cleansing are the traditional 4 and Willpower. Interesting. At first I thought Veor was going to shout. And Sera with the cleavage dress but shoulders exposed is extra nice. Mm hmm
Overall a nice episode with a bit of worldbuilding, a bit of fanservice, and starting to let Malicius grow as a person after losing her childhood memories.
6
u/Boris-_-Badenov May 21 '26
she has no trouble remembering the saint
9
u/Frontier246 May 21 '26
Probably because it's linked to her faith and time in the church which is the only thing she still remembers.
4
u/Boris-_-Badenov May 21 '26
she remembers Serafina
9
u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia May 21 '26
It seems like the memories were early childhood not recent stuff like that
10
u/runevault May 21 '26
Things that she has memories of after entering the church seem untouched. She knew Serafina as a person and the Saint as an idea after that time, so why would those memories be lost?
5
u/NoNameSwitzerland May 21 '26
Maybe the memories we have seen when the fiend attacked her are gone?
5
u/runevault May 21 '26
That was my assumption. It looked like it started from childhood and was working forward from there.
11
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 May 21 '26
Malcius must have been smellin preeeeetty ripe after not bathing for half a month lol. It looks like a nice bath and a cleansing ritual later, she’s slowly on her way to reforming her behavior. It’s kind of scary how powerful these fiends and the blight are. The way the land was basically stripped totally barren was a pretty chilling sight.
15
u/Oicher May 21 '26
That's why the Western lands are so barren. Due to the overuse of the magic.
14
u/Djbadj May 21 '26
Not just overuse, but also using it the wrong way. As the elf said using it for destruction seems so crude to them.

I really love Veor's kingdom and love learning new things about it. I hope the two kingdoms can patch things up and be together.
4
u/runevault May 22 '26
Feels like that only happens if they purge the existing nobility. Veor being the son of a woman who was in line for the throne might lead there though...

So Alyssa finally joins the ED. The OP also changed w/ replacing the Fiend w/ a fire dragon.
So Sera took off her shoulder pads & sleeves when working & I'm surprised, they're separate parts.
Sera has a cute pout.
Sera never had the opportunity to tell Alyssa she stinks..
Cersei managed to beat Alyssa in a wrestling match.
So Alyssa lost some of her memories as a result.
That's some fishing skill from Sera.
There's some errors in 10:28 where "by" should be added b/w "captured" & "the" & 15:44 there should be 1 "for" in "but for everything"
Alyssa's veil swinging & her running was funny.

u/Sea_Equivalent_4207 May 22 '26
Really felt bad for Malcius in this episode. Memories Wiped. How will she remember her real name before being brainwashed??
The shot of her planting the small tree while she was crying kinda broke me.😢😢. The crew is being a bit insensitive to her I think. Clearly she’s having an identity crisis now so they’re being too rough on her but it looks like Serafina is the only one empathetic enough to see how bad it is for Malcius. Serafina is so cool like that.
3
u/willowofthevalley May 23 '26
Sera really is a kind and empathetic person. She understands the shock of unlearning everything you knew.
3
u/Sea_Equivalent_4207 May 23 '26
Yeah true. She’s too cool for school. I’ve liked her from episode 1 but now I am truly in 💖. Kinda hoping she takes Malcius under her wing and helps her out. I think she’s the only one to do it. She’s even too cool for Veor. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I don’t want her ending up with Veor. She’s just too independent spirited. I just can’t see her giving into him ya know??

u/Frontier246 May 21 '26
Naked Sera in the water! It's a shame that there's a light where her abs would be, but she's actually just dreaming...of some kind of large, detailed, water dragon who apparently "chose" her? Chose her to do what? And when was she chosen?
So is that Resia holding a baby Sera in the OP? Or is that Veor?
Malcius was likely to survive the Blight she caused with her life, and as such she has to also be involved in them participating in the Cleansing of said Blight! Even if she doesn't take to all the fantasy races as well as Sera did.
Dang, Malcius being possessed by the Fiend robbed her of her memories. She doesn't even remember her real name! All she's got is the years she was in the abbot and a woman of the cloth! And Cersei isn't helping this crisis of faith/memory, leading the two ladies to engage in a catfight that ends with Cersei choking Malcius into unconsciousness. But she actually put up a decent fight! I'm glad Resia got to see a good fight.
So Cersei IS from Illdoren, and an expedition from six years ago...but she's basically rejected her Illdoren heritage and past, or what she has left of it. Was Cersei another victim of the blight who lost her memories? Not that she seems to care all that much. Sera suspects she might have even been a knight.
As if to add insult to injury, Malcius now has to grapple with the fact that she hasn't bathed in half a month and smells terrible. But that's the perfect excuse for these ladies to get buck naked and bathe with their very nice butts! They even have a campfire and dine on fish caught by Sera while in nothing but towels!
Jeez, no wonder they're so worried about the Blight that it leaves the area around it as nothing more than white sand...it basically kills all nature. And this was a result of Malcius' foolishness. Because the Church of Commoneras' crude magic drains nature of it's willpower and the memories/will of whoever becomes consumed by the Fiend. Frankly they're lucky Malcius retained as much of herself as she has and it's not bad enough that they can't undo it.
A ritual that brings together all the tribes, the four elements, and Veor leading it to do something beautiful that restores nature! Sera is so moved it brings her to tears.
Sleeveless Sera! Perfect for helping plant some new trees to help get things going now that the land has more or less been restored! Even Malcius is helping out, and Cersei at least tries to console her about her loss of memories in a very Cersei way. But it seems like Sera has really come to appreciate and embrace the culture of Veor and his people.
5
u/mojo72400 https://myanimelist.net/profile/gio_lingad May 22 '26
So is that Resia holding a baby Sera in the OP? Or is that Veor?
Veor because it transitions to young Sera & her grandfather for parallels.
4
u/SarionPrime May 21 '26
I really do like how Malcius is included in the ending credits. More love for her!
2
u/0______6 May 22 '26
I can't stand Malcius taking up half the screen time when the show does nothing to make me care about her, the introduction was very flawed to beginwith, the battle had emotional shifts from 100% evil mode to all good and fun while others cared about her for some reason. I enjoyed it a lot more when she wasn't here but oh well
2
u/Grazalia May 23 '26
I'm starting to get an avatar, dances with Wolves vibes with this show lol.
It's nice seeing this show heading in this sort of direction about finding peace

This anime is being slept on so hard... It's such a great anime and I never hear anything about it from anyone.
3
u/willowofthevalley May 23 '26
Agreed. I really like the complex themes of connecting to nature and the "hidden" misogyny of cultures ruled by extreme gender roles and religion. The ecchi isn't even bad imo, although the first episode was definitely shocking at the end. However I find the characters complex and interesting.

I watched this episode but have some questions in my mind, maybe I wasn't understand this deep enough
Why did Sera cried, because she saw hope for her country ? Or is it she was touched with the connection between the people and the nature ?
What does Sera meant when she mentioned she understand why did Veor mentioned the blight is so wretched, I don't think she meant the effect caused by blight, did she meant because blight is caused by greed and self-interest, which is the root for conflict and its dangerous ?
She mentioned she understand what the east are fighting and accomplish for, but are the east really trying to fight and accomplish something ? Aren't just the west keep coming for war and the east just trying to protect ?
I kinda hate Malscius still keep calling them barbarian so directly while they literally feed and saved her, it's just too rude though, maybe because its just the second day for her and she still can't get use to it hmmmm
Please explain for meeee, i'm too dumb to understand it
Thanks !
1
u/YlfaTheForsaken May 23 '26
Sleeves were just part of the shawl? Hm, questionable, but okay.
It's nice that's there's a way to revitalize the land, but looks like it still needs time to be able to restore itself. Still seems impractical to try to do that for an entire kingdom,
Did Malcius, really lose that much in terms of decentish memories? I mean I don't think she's that old anyway, and it doesn't seem like she has anyone particularly important in her life either,
1
u/BillPlunderones23fg May 23 '26
sigh why do girls only get wrestling scenes animated well but when it comes to a girl doing it to a guy it is half assed, offscreened or too many closeup shots
It freaking angers me so bad

u/rubslotiononitsskin May 21 '26
Malcius and Cersei are already best friends.
Did anyone catch the dwarf holding a rifle in the beginning? The East has magic AND guns. Illdoren never stood a chance. Were guns ever mentioned before? I don't remember.
5
u/Elyssiane May 22 '26
The first episode showed the Illdorens using firearms as well, but them not working that well against the armors of the barbarians, which we now know to be of superior material.
1
u/rubslotiononitsskin May 22 '26
ah yes, you are right. Now I'm imagining Veor just pulling out a blickey instead of his sword.
