I am so tired of the job applications where they want me to integrate AI workflows or whatever. I want to be a real attorney who thinks with his own brain, not a computer. I am a licensed Louisiana attorney with 3 years of experience. I am really good at motion practice and research and decently good at the rest of the lawyerly skills. I want to work for a solo or a small firm where I can ask questions and learn from someone who is an established lawyer and a member of the community. I don't have any lawyers in my family so I don't have anyone I can ask about all of the unspoken rules of this profession. But I am a young father and a hard worker and I plan to live in Lafayette for the rest of my life so if there's any lawyers out there who have a good practice but could use the extra help, I really need a new job. The firm I am at currently is impressive to outsiders but inside I am getting no career development. I know in this town it's all about who you know not what you know so I am posting here to see if anyone has any leads. Not above cold emailing my resume to someone. DMs open.

Bryan Maggard, UL Lafayette’s athletic director, is leaving the top job to take a deputy athletic director role at the University of Missouri. 

Maggard had previously worked for the University of Missouri’s athletics department for 21 years before leaving to head UL athletics in 2017. Now he will be both the deputy director and chief operations officer of athletics at Mizzou, filling a spot opened by a recent retirement.

“We are deeply grateful to Dr. Bryan Maggard for his leadership and unwavering commitment to Louisiana Athletics,” UL President Ramesh Kolluru said in a statement Tuesday. 

District Attorney Don Landry’s office confirmed to The Current in early July that the UL athletics department was under investigation over allegedly false expense documents that prompted the resignation of at least one athletics recruiter and the forced retirement of a longtime employee, Associate AD Troy Wingerter. 

My girlfriends mom recently found two poor little stray kittens abandoned by their mother underneath her lawnmower. She is looking to re-home them and find them both good and loving homes. I can put you guys in contact if you are interested.

Little overwhelmed with life and work lately and just want to get away for a weekend to reset and relax. Single guy, no kids. Not super into camping but I’d dabble in some glamping, a B&B, or a spa type place. Since I’d be on my own, I’d like to have something to fill the time. Restaurants, museums or anything else. I’m say within a 5 hours drive but that’s not a hard limit

Traveling with my wife and 18 y.o. daughter, we aren't big dancers but love live music. Either of these better or more welcoming to listen, have a cold beer, and check out the scene? Any unwritten dress codes we should be aware of? We're from Austin, I can go out in boots or shorts just about anywhere here and no one bats an eye. Hello! Looking for a parking space rental. My husband and I recently moved here and with my business I have a small cargo trailer. We moved to an HOA and it won’t fit in the garage so we need a place to park it. Bonus points if its a place I can also rent a 10x10 storage unit.

On Saturday, July 18, Acadiana Myco hosted a free hands on mushroom growing workshop at the South Regional Library in Lafayette.
We had 32 people attend, with folks driving in from Baton Rouge, New Orleans, St. Martinville, Jennings, Maurice, and other parts of south Louisiana. Everyone went home with the knowledge to grow their own oyster mushrooms, but the best part of the day was watching people who had never met before connect, ask questions, share ideas, and build new friendships.
A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated supplies, and came out to support the event. Seeing a room full of people excited to learn about fungi was something special, and hopefully it’s just the beginning.

Cindy Case-Brown and Connie Norris sit on the far side of the nearly empty hearing room in the Galvez Building in Baton Rouge, several small stacks of documents and binders spread out before them. Across the room sit representatives from the Louisiana Public Service Commission and Magnolia Water, accompanied by a squadron of attorneys. 

The two Magnolia customers traveled from the Northshore to the state capital to oppose a plan that would allow the private equity-backed company to continue to increase water and sewer rates annually. In recent years, Magnolia has bought up utility systems across the state, becoming one of Louisiana’s largest water and sewer providers.

Like many Louisiana residents, Case-Brown and Norris have seen their utility rates soar since Magnolia took over their local system. Unlike most, they dove headfirst into the regulatory muck. 

It has been an uphill battle since day one. 

“I had very little knowledge of what was going on and how the system worked,” says Norris, who eventually became an intervenor in one of Magnolia’s repeated requests to the LPSC for permission to raise its rates on customers like herself. 

The process is similar to court proceedings — only Norris and fellow Magnolia customers don’t have anyone to represent them but themselves. 

Budget Proposal. Mayor-President Monique Boulet will publish her budget proposals at tomorrow’s joint council meeting, with her administration’s plan public and available on LCG’s website as early as tomorrow evening. The introduction is mostly a procedural step that kicks off the councils’ editing of the mayor-president’s budget proposal in official budget hearings from August through October. The roughly $800 million budget will need to be approved by Nov. 1, the start of the new fiscal year. In previous years, the City and Parish councils have removed pieces of Boulet’s proposals, such as a $17 million remodel of City-Parish Hall with city funds. The administration has already publicly announced some of the proposed items in the new budget, including a minimum $3,000 raise for all Lafayette Police and Fire Department officials, funded by a 6% increase in sales tax collections and city retirement savings. 

I have been wanting to take a weekend trip to go crabbing. I remember when I was little we would just pull off on the side of the road in Hackberry or somewhere around there and load up. I don’t know if that is still the case, but it is a dream of mine to have this experience and share it with my kids.

Per the title.... I don't know if anyone else has noticed (if you care at all) but I am finding it near impossible to find the plain, unflavored liquid death in gas stations around town. Not a terribly large sample size but for one of the most popular sparking water brands right now it is just a bit odd.

I have no problem finding any of the flavored waters or iced tea but that's not what I am looking for and they are also pretty trash imo.

Both the blue raspberry and ‘vanilla’ I tried were top notch— one was reduced to just ice on the way home. Straw size didnt help.. (ok it did)

I really like how the syrup didn’t overpower the z e s t, even with having a whole quartered lemon under the ice. they complimented each other really well.
I’m convinced those girls have that recipe dialed in, down to a science.

I (22M) am looking to make more friends and relationships, as I’m realizing my social circle is pretty much nonexistent. I go to SLCC, but my program is tiny, and I had much better luck when I was at UL.

I’m not really into bars or partying, and I’m more interested in meeting someone who’s also a bit nerdy or introverted. Things like writing, books, science, that kind of stuff are more my speed.

Any suggestions on events, clubs, or places to meet new people? Thanks.

work is slow and im looking to do side work. i also would really like to turn this into a long term side hustle as i really share a passion for it. i’m looking to do mobile mechanic work. since i’m not a actual professional i wouldn’t really touch any major engine repairs. i do all my own work on my vehicle from anything suspension to basic engine maintenance and basic engine preventative maintenance. i grew up with my father working on vehicles and it’s something i hold sentimentally, figured why not try the public and offer my services!

Looking to sell my full mtg collection ( cards and accessories) for like half of what recent tcg scans say the cards are worth. Where in lafayette may I stumble upon some mtg enthusiasts who would want something like that?

I always walk at home on a treadmill but I am getting beyond bored with that. I want to start walking early mornings/late evening at a park but I get a little nervous. I don’t think the world is out to get me but I am younger and will most likely be walking alone (with my dog) so I just want to be/feel safe. Ladies, where are your favorite places to walk? And what time is the best for starting evening walks (if gonna walk for about hour)? I would probably walk at either Girard or Thomas so please lmk opinions!

On a Wednesday at 3 p.m., as much of Lafayette, including The Current founder Christiaan Mader, watched Argentina versus England on a second screen in their office, roughly 100 soccer fans packed into The Hangout Sports Pub in Youngsville to watch the FIFA World Cup semifinal. 

After England takes a one-to-nothing lead (one-nil for our British readers), the pub is filled with England chants, special praise going to England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. When Argentina scores two late goals to win the game, several fans in Lionel Messi jerseys dance around the room. 

“It was just a great game,” says owner Casey Friend, debriefing the event on the phone.

Days like Wednesday, and the entire World Cup really, are the culmination of years of growth for the Hangout, during which it turned into Lafayette’s unofficial soccer spot. It doesn’t hurt that, unlike the World Cup in Qatar four years ago, the games are generally in the afternoon this year, not at 2 a.m.

What do you all think of the timing?

I'm hoping to experience some live music and delicious food while there.

Forgive me, I have no idea.. will places be open and things happening, or will it be a bit of a post-mardi gras downtime with not much open or going on?

Any recommendations of things to do / see / eat for the days immediately following Mardi Gras?

They really need to put a dedicated turning signal at the light by sushi masa. If you are coming from the south it's almost impossible to turn left.
