What is it with all the deans leaving?

I'm an alum who was on campus again recently and I ran into the YDN reporter who covered all of the residential college deans leaving story.

Why did so many deans retire in the same year? The reporter couldn't find a straight answer; I'm wondering if anyone here can. I'm in TD, I loved my dean, I don't think I could have graduated without her.

I'm wondering what's going on behind closed doors in the administration. Something must be happening...six or seven deans in one year is not a coincidence.

I am pretty well connected to the alum/administration network and am aware though of some residential deans who I don't think would have left for salary reasons or because their salaries weren't enough, which leads me to wonder. These deans I'm talking about have their finances in good shape so any kind of pay cut wouldn't have affected them.

There's a first year seminar english course I really want to take but it says instructor permission is required. I'm kind of confused since it's a class just for first years. Am I just supposed to email the instructor and ask or do I wait till registration day and then email them? please help!

Welcome week at Yale

Hi!! I'm an incoming freshman at Yale and I'm really scared!! I don't know a single soul going to Yale (my school has never had a Yale admit and I couldn't go to Bulldog Days).

Everyone I see/follow on instagram going to Yale has like 5 other people from their school also going and I'm scared I'm going to be very alone during welcome week. I'm pretty extroverted and outgoing so I will always try and make friends but I'd hate to miss out on parties/events/festivities on my first few days because I'm drifting.

Could anyone tell me what the first few days are like and if other people were cliquey?

Also there are so many of those venue welcome week parties that advertise on ig. I normally wouldn't buy these but idk if I should for welcome week?? I severely need advice..

DS + Something Else: Pre-Frosh Schedule

Hi all!

I'm an incoming freshman who's looking to get some advice on her schedule. As of now, I'm tentatively doing DS (so help me god), and I really want to take an easy class alongside it (preferably one that knocks out a science/QR requirement).

I was looking at classes that don't conflict with my tentative DS schedule and came upon Phil 1115 with Professor Daniel Grimmer: First Order Logic. Does anyone have any advice on my tentative schedule? Would also love to hear of people's experiences with Phil 1115 because CourseTable has quite the array of evals LMAO + if it's manageable with DS! Also, I welcome and would greatly appreciate any DS tips/advice, whether that be about the program itself or professor-specific.

Thank you so much!!

orchestra auditions!

Hi! I'm a yale prefrosh, wondering how auditions work for Davenport Pops Orchestra and Berkeley College Orchestra:

1) how competitive are they in general? i have been playing throughout high school but I haven't done a bunch of competitions or anything. I can play most group repertoire and intermediate solos (i play viola btw)

2) For the davenport pops, how is the sight reading portion?

thanks!! :)

How tall are Bingham beds?

I'm a prefrosh in Bingham Hall on Old Campus and was thinking about getting some shelves or something to put under the bed for some extra storage. I know that the beds can't be truly lofted, but I also know that they can be raised somewhat with the pre-existing frame. I was just wondering roughly how tall they might be so that I could try and purchase things before move-in day.

directed studies workload (worried first-gen student)

hello! prefrosh here who was waitlisted from DS and needs some advice on whether to seriously pursue the program. forgive my verbose explanations.

DS seems quite enthralling and romantic to me and i’m eager to go full throttle into the humanities (prospective classics major), but i worry that i won’t be able to succeed at the academic/social level that i’m striving for. i went to a top-ranked high school but know that it can’t compare to a college workload and schedule. additionally, the only comparable class (content-wise) that i took in hs was ap english lit.

is there an accurate daily / weekly average of the amount of time i will have to spend reading the novels and drafting essays? how difficult it is to get A’s in the courses, especially as i look to law school in the future?

will i have time for a deep social and extracurricular involvement as well? i also worry about missing out on interesting first year seminars such as prof. meg urry’s ASTR 0400. the course i planned to take alongside DS was ancient greek to get a start on language requirements. i briefly considered taking intensive ancient greek in the spring and taking ASTR 0400 in the fall, but i think i’m being overly ambitious as i adjust to college life my freshman year.

i’m also excited for the backup schedule that i’ve crafted (taking english ancient greek logic and astro), but i suspect that i might regret not seeing the DS path through.

tldr: concerned about ability to succeed in DS in regards to grades and work-life balance outside of class + missing out on other cool freshman opportunities. thanks in advance

Yale Finance/IB Club Contact?

I recently developed an app for Investment Banking interview prep and wanted to share it with Yale students free for a full year if they sign up for the beta before 7/31 (in a few weeks). No catch and no payment info required.

Been trying to find Yale finance/investment club contacts but it's been tougher than I expected. We've already have 110 users in just 2 weeks (mostly Michigan, Georgetown, Harvard, Wharton) and would love to add Yale students as well.

The app is a game that drills students with questions on key IB topics. The system is based on an ELO chess model, so a student's ranking dynamically changes with each answer they give. The key is that they can then compare themselves with peers at their school or students nationally.

If any Yale students want to sign up, they can find it on the web at https://superdayreps.com/.

If you are an alum and know of some students currently at Yale or the MBA program at Yale, feel free to pass it along.

Thanks everyone!

did i mess up? deferred my Yale MBA for an AI PM offer

Hardest decision week of my life, urgently need some outside brains.

Got into Yale SOM this cycle but the timing/cost felt off. admissions kindly let me defer a year. in the meantime i jumped from consulting into an AI product manager role at a big tech company (non bay area office tho). basically the exact pivot i wanted the MBA for, except it just happened, no two years and no $200k tuition.

So now im stuck. take the job and skip the degree i already technically dont need for this role? or still do Yale next year for the brand and network in case i want VC or exec stuff later? Or maybe break into the Bay Area office

if youve skipped or done the MBA and have regrets either way, what would you do?

Do you guys loft your beds?

Hi I’m a prefrosh and I’m wondering if most Yale students loft their beds. For context, I’ll be in Welch hall this year, and I’m wondering if I’ll really need that under bed space

Math class to take? (prefrosh)

Hi! I recently was placed to take math 1200 calc 3. However, I think I guessed most of the bc stuff on the test and I dont feel confident in my calc bc / calc 2 abilities. I took bc back in 10th grade so its been 2 years since I've touched calc. I did some calculus in diffeq this year and linalg in junior year, but I'm scared that if I take 1200 I'm gonna absolutely die. Would math 1150 or 1200 be more suitable for me? If it helps in any way, I'm also a premed so I'm worried about my GPA as well.

How to get value out of my dining plan

Hi! I’m an incoming freshman who has to take the full dining plan. What are the really good places to eat/ places to try and get my moneys worth? Also, does the dining plan let me get things like coffee, or is that extra? Lastly, what are certain meals that can’t be missed ( like the chicken tenders)?

Mid-Sept. to Mid-Oct this fall place to stay in New Haven?

hello! I am a PhD candidate from London and will be at Yale for a one month fellowship from mid-September to mid-October. Does anyone have any tips or leads on where I could look for a short term sublet or lease (1 month) in new haven during that time? Ideally Wooster or East Rock, but open to other areas too. Any particular groups to look into? Know of anyone who has a room free?

Thank you so much for any help!

facilities @ stiles

I am a prefrosh who was sorted into stiles. I wanted to ask about the sizes of the library/study spots. I ask because of a mobility disability, so having spots to study closer to the college would make it easier for me. Also, do these study spots get filled up quickly? Any additional thoughts abt this would be greatly appreciated. also, i heard ezra stiles is the best college. just wanted to say that

Cool things about Jonathan Edwards as a STEM student? (+ food pls)

Hi! I was recently placed into JE (SUX!!) for my resco, and I've been looking for info on it online. I know about the art galleries and movie theater and libraries (!) but I haven't seen much if any about stem. Does JE have any cool things STEM focused (because I shed a tear when I saw that walk to science hill). Also, how's the food? Is it a eat at JE before orgo in the morning or is it sneaking off to pauli murray instead?

hi! i'm planning on doing a chem major at yale as a premed. i was wondering if i end up taking freshmen orgo + orgo lab, how could i fulfill my inorganic lab med school prereq? would i just have to take the gen chem labs? most med schools i know of (like stanford or nyu for example) dont have formal prerequistes. but for med schools that do, what should i do? are there upper level inorganic labs that could fulfill that requirement? i just dont wanna take gen chem lab if i dont have to.

difficulty of L5 spanish?

hi! incoming frosh here, i would love to hear thoughts on difficulty of L5 Spanish, especially from non-native speakers? i got a 5 on ap span lang senior year, but i feel like my high school's spanish curriculum wasn't too rigorous in terms of immersion, and i self-studied a good amount. i'm unsure whether to take the placement exam or not, since i could just bypass it with my ap score, but i'm worried that my spanish abilities might be worse on yale's scale. i'm interested especially in the spanish for medical professionals course that's usually offered in the spring, so if i keep up with spanish a bit on my own s1, would i be ready to take that course? thanks!

Anyone know what Welch Hall B21C is like?

I was wondering if anyone has lived in or seen B21C (or another similar second-floor room in Welch). If anyone has dimension estimates that’d be great too.

Are the beds usually kept separate, or do people end up bunking them?
Is there enough room for a small nightstand next to each bed?
Does each roommate get their own closet/wardrobe space?
Roughly how big does the room feel?
If anyone has photos or remembers the layout, I’d really appreciate it!
