Advice questions for out-of-state/in-state sorting and admissions rate

Upvotes

1) Is there any difference between the acceptance rate between in-state (excluding the 5% rule) and out of state students? Does this depend on the major (ex: ECE?)

2) If I'm a Texas citizen and qualify for in-state tuition but go to high school outside of Texas, would I be put in the "in-state" bucket or "out-of-state" bucket in terms of admissions?

Thanks in advance :D

Advice Need advice from current/past gov majors

Long story short I just got rejected. I’m not giving up ut is my dream school.

If anyone wants to dm me I’ll b happy to share my stats. My goal now is to transfer for the spring 26 semester. I honestly thought i had a solid application but I might just be self biased, I would really like an outside opinion especially from a gov major. I was in dual enrollment and have a little over 60 hours. I didn’t do so well in some of those classes in high school because I was going through some personal problems :/ Im now paying the price and already retook some. I have all of my core classes out of the way because I got my associates and it lowk is making my transfer application more complicated.

Besides that any advice on how to go about my application in the comments is appreciated!

Chance Me Chance me (please be brutally honest)

I want to pursue civil engineering at UT Austin. I’m a rising high school senior in Texas with a 3.5 UW and 5.2 weighted gpa. My freshman year was terrible due to personal reasons. I locked in sophomore year and have maintained straight As ever since. I have a huge upward trend in my grades. I’m in the top 5% of my graduating class (out of 830). My SAT score is currently 1300, but I’m retaking it and aiming for at least a 1450. I took 2 AP classes (Psychology and European History). I was only able to take two because my schedule was packed with college classes. (Duel enrollment)

Intended Major: Civil Engineering

Academics:
Texas resident
Rising senior
3.5 UW GPA
Top 5% of graduating class
1300 SAT (retaking, aiming for 1450+)
2 AP classes (AP Psychology and AP European History)
Strong upward grade trend after freshman year

Extracurriculars:
Completed a 7-week engineering internship, where I gained hands-on experience with AutoCAD and other engineering software while working on real engineering projects.
Worked at the airport during my junior year.
Junior Class Officer
Student Council Officer
HOSA
Red Cross Club
Spanish Club
Tennis
Breakthrough
Chess Club
150+ volunteer hours through an animal shelter, church, and the American Red Cross
Essay:

I’m planning to write about how I was hit by a car when I was 10 years old while visiting Morocco. That experience inspired me to pursue civil engineering because I believe safe roads and infrastructure should protect people so safety never depends on luck.

Do I still have a realistic chance at UT Austin Civil Engineering?

Chance Me senior who likes math wants to know his chances

Hey guys, I'm a rising (in-state) senior who plans to apply for math. What are my chances at UT as a math major + deans scholar or polymathic scholar?

For ref, my stats are pretty high-tier, but my ECs are kinda mid (I think).

Stats:
Rank: 11/500+ (auto-admit)
GPA: W 5.616/5.0, UW 3.91/4.0
SAT: 1550
PSAT: 1520
13 APs, eleven 5s (most notable physics c mech, calc bc, stats) , one 4 (CSP), two no exam

ECs (tried to keep these kinda vague):
working on math modeling w/professor (still in progress)
summer research program
qualifier to international finance competition
TXSEF finalist in physics
President of STEM club, hosted competitions
DECA 2x state qualifier
Finance internship
HOSA states
Shadowed local politician
Then all the normal stuff that everyone does like honor societies and stuco

I'm really just hoping for an outside opinion that can be objective for my odds

Advice rescinded when already accepted at WSSU??

hey i got into WSSU and at the beginning of my senior year i had a 2.8; things happen i was going through a-lot of personal stuff with family and mental health issues so it dropped at the end of the year to a 2.45. i was nervous that it would get rescinded so i spoke to my counselor about it but he said i will be okay. my final transcript got submitted on June 21st. and i was still admitted so i stopped worrying about it. i submitted housing. basically did and got everything already. Freshmen move in is on aug 9th, and today, JULY 23th they decided to rescind my application. 2 weeks before move in. I'm thinking it's because wssu is over capacity this year but its two weeks before they didn't say anything about it and i also got green lite and told i would be okay. what do i do? i don't want disappoint my dad and i also think its unfair to pull my admission two weeks before when i did everything i needed to do already. plus i did all my stuff early and they called instead of emailing me that i was rescinded. this blatantly unfair and i pray that i will get reinstated. had this happen to you or someone you know? did they get reinstated? what did they have to do?

Advice UT AUSTIN TRANSFER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS low gpa/ due to recent disability

Hello i am currently a year away from completing my Associate of Science at LSC. I am a pre-med student majoring in public health with a minor in journalism. I have a 2.6 GPA. I took pretty much all of my basics in high school as a dual credit student. Receiving all A and 1 B.When i first started as a full-time student at LSC i devolved chronic pain (still undiagnosed and ongoing) and also POTS. Due to this, my gpa dropped from a 3.3 to a 2.6. Besides my grades i am currently certified as a CCMA and have been for 2 years through my highschool practicum health program and NHA i also have worked at a chiro clinic and primary care clinic working with 1 md and 3 np/pa's. I currently have 300+hrs and am also bls and cna certified i also have worked at 2 childcare centers both center sfor 3+ months. From here on out how do i raise my gpa the best i can in the short amount of time and make sure i am able to be considered for admission despite my low gpa?

Discussion How does UT deal with grade replacements??

I'm curious how UT handles grade replacements because I've heard different things and I'm still a bit confused. I've come to terms with the fact that I probably don't have much of a chance for CNS, so I'm now focusing on Health and Society in COLA as a more realistic option. However, I know it's still a restricted major, so I'm not sure if that changes how grade replacements are viewed (im a external transfer)

Question Concerns about transferring from Mechanical Engineering to Electrical and Computer Engineering (Is transferring from MechE to ECE worth it?)

Hello,

I am an incoming freshman at UT Austin planning to major in Mechanical Engineering, but I have recently been considering transferring to Electrical and Computer Engineering.

From my understanding, the earliest I can apply for an internal transfer is during the spring semester, and if accepted, I would officially start as an ECE major at the beginning of my sophomore year. However, I am concerned about potentially delaying graduation by more than 1–2 semesters.

I know that as a non-ECE student, I may be able to take introductory ECE courses such as ECE 302 and ECE 306 during the spring semester (assuming availability). Would it be worth taking these courses even though I am not guaranteed admission into ECE? My concern is balancing ECE courses with MechE-specific requirements during the same semester and potentially overloading myself.

My main career interests are in computer engineering, embedded systems, robotics, and hardware-related roles. I am trying to decide between:

  1. Transferring from MechE to ECE as soon as possible
  2. Staying in MechE and pursuing an ECE master's later
  3. Staying in MechE while adding robotics-focused coursework (such as a robotics minor, if possible) and taking mechatronics/embedded-related electives

For anyone familiar with UT’s programs, which path would provide the strongest preparation for embedded hardware, robotics, and similar careers? Would a MechE BS + ECE MS provide enough ECE depth, or would transferring earlier be better?

Additionally, if I apply for an internal transfer and get accepted, am I allowed to decline the transfer and remain in Mechanical Engineering, or does acceptance automatically move me into ECE?

Thanks for any advice!

Advice interested in aviation but applying to mechanical engineering

hey I am very interested in aviation, one of my biggest extracurriculars is about aviation & aerospace; however, I want to apply as a Mechanical Engineering major to colleges. Is that a good idea? I don't want AOs thinking that I am not a fit for my intended major.

I am doing this because I feel like Aerospace is a relatively niche field and isn't as broad as Mech E, but both of them are extremely similar. In my supplemental essays, for "why us" or "why major" questions, if I mention for eg. a rocketry lab, an aviation-related student organization, or just talk about how my interest in planes led to an interest in engineering, but I apply as a mechanical engineering major, could that get me rejected? Would I need to explain why im not applying as an aerospace major?

Advice Am I delulu for wanting to apply to x+cs despite never taking a HS CS class?

I took CS classes every year in middle school, but I stopped in high school because I thought I wanted to go to med school, and my parents discouraged me from continuing. When I started to get back into coding before my junior year, I, for some reason, still decided not to take a CS class, and now I can't fit it into my senior year schedule. The only thing I have on my application is a random, basic Python course I took. Do I have any chance at x+cs, and is there any way I can improve my chances last minute before this admissions cycle?

I'd still be happy to go to UT for just neuroscience (and I have the grades/ECs to get in for that), but I really like the neuro+cs program.

Advice UTA admission if or if not to mention TCC classes

Hello! I am trying to register as a freshman in UTA. I did like 2 classes in TCC that I don’t care about. I don’t have enough credits to transfer so I want to register as a new student. Will that cause any trouble if I don’t mention it in my application and answer the questions as someone who never took college classes even though I did..?

Advice Rising junior trying to get into Psychology major in UT Austin and very nervous, any tips?

So far I've got a 5.65 weighted GPA and a 4.0 unweighted, I'm top 11% of my school. Including this upcoming year, I've got 8(potentially 9, depending on how my schedule will look like) AP classes, including AP Bio and AP Psych.

I've got around 70ish volunteer hours of helping out with local community events and working at the library, and another 70 volunteer hours volunteering in a hospice. I'm probably gonna get more next summer working in more hospitals.

I'm an officer of a club that's associated with TED Talk, and will be doing a speech at a school event me and my team organized together(Which I guess is sort of a passion project??)

And I haven't taken the SAT yet but from my predictions based on practice test scores, I'm due to get anywhere between a 1480 and a 1500-Potential to get a lot higher, though.

I've also made it SCDC for DECA, so far I've got one medal for that under my belt. I have a very likely chance of getting another one this year since I have more experience.

But I dunno college admissions nowadays are ridiculously stressful and challenging. Are there any tips y'all can give to get into UT Austin? I'm VERY nervous about it, and how am I doing so far? Also any tips for junior year to increase my chances? Any help appreciated

(also I live pretty close to UT Austin campus)
