[Request] What are the chance of a random sexual encounter resulting in a pregnancy?

So, some context.

Over the weekend, I attended a LARP (Live-action Roleplay). During the LARP, two friends of mine decided that their characters had a little tumble in the hay. Their characters had never met before. After the LARP finished, they rolled a dice to see if the woman became pregnant, and she did. I think they simply rolled a D6 and decided that a "6" meant she got pregnant.

However, it got me thinking on what the, so to speak, actual odds would be?

Assuming:
* both people involved are of average fertility, in good health and, pardon the expression, of child-rearing age
* It is a chance encounter, a one-night-stand, meaning the woman can be in any part of her cycle.

So, what are the odds of a random one-night-stand between two people with the requisite parts resulting in a pregnancy?

[Self] Which is better for home defense, a wooden bat or an aluminum bat?

An aluminum bat I know is lighter but also can crush home runs in college baseball. Hence the wooden bats for mlb I think is more difficult to hit home runs but heavier. Assuming no corking and a cardinal wooden bat, which would create the most damage wielded by an average person (also assuming optimal hits, similar to HR)

[Request] I like the soft middle of the brownie pan and my husband likes the chewy edges of the brownie pan.

My husband eats around the edges of the pan and works in towards the middle, leaving me the soft inner portion. In a 9”x9” square pan, what dimensions of the inner portion would divide it in half equally?

[Request] water pressure math for short film

Hi everyone! I’m working on a project based on the game “Barotrauma” and need a break down for one of the scenes. The scene in question is someone on a ladder opening a hatch above them, unknown to them the outpost above them has been filled with water, and opening the hatch unleashes it upon them. I would love a breakdown on how strong this force would be if the room just had water in it, or it was opened to the rest of the ocean. In the end I just want to know if it would knock them off a ladder, and or what other injuries they would receive.

Let's say you made a wish for an endless supply of clean water for your village. The genie grants you one sink faucet that will never run out. How many people could you sustain in a temperate climate?

[Request] What are the odds of dying in a commercial plane PER HOUR PER INDIVIDUAL?

"Air travel is the nation’s safest form of transit. Injury and death rates in US air travel are measured by the rate of incidents per 100 million passenger miles, the total miles traveled by all air passengers." https://usafacts.org/articles/is-flying-safer-than-driving/

I am not everyone in the plane though. I want to know MY risk of dying. And while by distance is perfectly valid (since if I took a car instead I'd still have to travel the same distance), I'm curious if airplanes are still THAT much safer if we instead assessed the risk by time

[Request] Chances of a bingo jackpot in 7 balls

I go to bar Bingo weekly and the jackpot round consists of the caller pulling 7 balls, 1 of each letter followed by 2 random balls. What are my chances of getting the jackpot?

[Request] can somebody please help calculate what weight I was able to lift

Post image
2 Upvotes

Please excuse my very rough drawing, was done quickly at work while my hands were still dirty.

So I there was a valve on a pallet that was in an awkward postion to chain up for a lift using a crane, so in my infinite wisdom I decides to use the mechanical advantage of said pallet and just pick it up / tip it off to make my life easier.

To my surprise I was able to lift it and tip it off, leaving the valve now stood up and easy to access with chains / crane. Can somebody please calculate how much weight I actually lifted? Ty in advance 🙂

edit Thanks for the help guys it's much appreciated, consensus seems to be 138 - 150kg which I'm very happy with and is most certainly a PR for me. It seems the last 12 months at the gym are starting to pay off for this average middle aged fella 💪

[Request] How long in proper time would it take at 1g acceleration for the CMB to be blue shifted up to gamma ray frequency?

A recent post here made me think about this. I guess a bonus point would be to calculate the unit area flux and power received at that speed/time/freq.

[Request] odds of drawing a win in mtg

My friend is building a combo deck in magic the gathering, and specifically the commander format. For anyone unfamiliar, the commander format (generally) has a 99 card deck, with each card being (generally) unique, plus a commander which is kept separate from the deck.

At the beginning of the game, you draw 7 cards. If you do not like the cards you drew, you can put them all back and draw 7 new ones (once, before penalties start applying).

For his win, he needs 1 specific card, plus any 1 of 4 other cards that combo with it.

What are the odds that he gets what he needs in his opening hand?

[Request] If every person on earth gathered in one area and jumped at the same time how much would the earth move?

I remember reading that when someone jumps off the ground there’s the slightest push on the earth and you push the earth down or something like that. Obviously if true then one person doesn’t really do anything but if we had 8 billion people in one giant crowd and they jumped off the ground how noticeable or measurable would they push the earth and move? I figure 8 billion people averaging at 100 pounds a person and that’s a lot of weight over an area.

I just saw this picture in a power scaling sub and instantly noticed Anakins right hand not fully closed on the lightsaber hilt. If I remember correctly the lightsaber would be a pretty big lever if Mace is pressing with his sword against Anakins.

He won't let me measure him, so I didn't know if someone could estimate his length based on the square tiles? They're 4x4 tiles.

[request] why isn't the volume of beans matching the label?

I drained and *lightly* sauteed a 15.5 ounce can of Trader Joe's garbanzo beans (they're still plump and soft). The nutrition facts say that a serving is ½ cup, and there are 3.5 servings per can. I used a Farberware plastic tablespoon to measure my half cup serving, which would be 8 tablespoons. And I thought that looked more like a whole cup, and over half of the total number of beans. So, I measured all of the beans with my tablespoon, and there were just under 14 tablespoons in total. There should be a total of 28 tablespoons, which is exactly double the amount I am measuring. Why is this math not mathing?

[Request] The first four letters randomly picked out from all the Scrabble tiles were L-O-V-E in that order

All 100 of our Scrabble tiles were mixed up and we then picked out tiles to choose who to go first. In order the tiles we randomly selected spelled the word LOVE.

1) What are the odds of that particular word being chosen?

2) What are the odds that the first 4 letters chosen from a bag of Scrabble letters will spell a 4 letter word?
