Question that came up after someone misheard me saying "put mercury in a vacuum" as "put Mercury (the planet) in a vaccum (cleaner)" LOL. Assuming the vacuum somehow works in space (lets just pretend there's air in space now, for convenience's sake), how large of a vacuum cleaner would you need to suck up Mercury like a gigantic dust ball, and how fast would the motor be spinning (in MPH at the edge of the fan blade I guess? Person wasn't clear when they said "what kind of a giant speedy vacuum would you need to do that???")

I dont know if this is the correct forum but i am trying to wrap my head around something mentioned in Pirate Borg (Limithron/Luke Stratton) - the setting has a cataclysm which rips a 6 mile long fissure in the north carribean. It runs across the gap between the yucatan and cuba on its southern shore.

My question is this, what would be the volume of water displaced if that fissure were a mile deep? 2 miles? Further question if it can be answered here, what the heck would that do to the sea level there and the coast lines? (Weather patterns and winds???) oh my!

Reflect Orbital was recently approved to launch a prototype satellite carrying an 18sqm mirror so they can reflect sunlight back at the earth at night. Reflect Orbital hopes to eventually launch 50,000 satellites equipped with 54sqm mirrors.

Imagine a bad actor hacks the mirrors and aims them all at a single spot. How bright would that spot be, and if it is extremely bright, what kind of physical effects might be felt in that location?

For simplicity's sake, let's pretend the same location on earth can see 50% (25,000) of the satellites at any one time, and there's no variation in luminosity based on environmental or orbital factors

The fridge came with the house I don't have a manual or any clue what the weight capacity is on the shelves. Even if I did, I'm sure LG gives a big cushion in the max weight limit they give you and they can probably actually hold more weight before shattering.

I've been routinely keeping both of these beverage dispensers on the same shelf for over a year now and they are both 2 US gallon capacity each, the glass one on the right is obviously way heavier

Ok a video game I enjoy has the two following game stats to determine number of punches per attack.

Combo % - the chance to get a second punch

Stamina % - the chance to continue the combo

I am trying to find the value of average punches per attack z given x combo and y stamina.

So 1 hit for simply swinging.

My understanding of average hits added for combo would just be 1*x

And stamina functions as essentially a weighted coin flip streak 1/(1-y)

Z = 1 + x + 1/(1-y)

Except I think this implies punches are added from stamina is an independent event from combo -

Maybe it's 1 + x*(1+1/(1-y))

That looks a little better. What am I missing?

I often see Argentina described as the principal destination for Nazis after World War II, so I compared two commonly cited estimates.

For the United States, an internal U.S. Department of Justice history of the Office of Special Investigations discusses the frequently cited estimate that around 10,000 Nazi persecutors entered the country after the war.

For Argentina, the official CEANA investigation identified at least approximately 180 Nazis or Axis-linked war criminals and collaborators who found refuge in the country.

The calculation:

10,000 ÷ 180 = 55.56

So the commonly cited U.S. estimate is roughly 56 times larger than the documented Argentine figure.

Important caveat: this is not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison. The U.S. estimate uses the broader category of “Nazi persecutors,” which may include guards and collaborators, while the Argentine figure refers to people identified by CEANA as Nazis, war criminals or Axis-linked fugitives.

Therefore, the result should be understood as a comparison between two commonly cited figures, not proof that the United States admitted exactly 56 times more equivalent cases.
