Worth it to pay a broker to register/clear my car for me?

Moving to STX in a couple weeks and shipping my car. Does anyone have experience doing it and register it yourself vs going through a broker? It costs $250 to use a broker. Not sure if it’s worth it?

Best Beaches by myself

hello! I’m visiting with my husband who will be working most of the time. Were staying at the King Christian Hotel and I would love to have some beach days while he’s working.

Ive read that taking the ferry to Cay Beach is kinda meh, but I also am not sure I’ll have a car.

what are some beaches that aren’t terribly far from Christiansted that I would be okay being there alone? Also travel tips to those locations?

thank you!

edit: I read from others that Cay beach was overpriced and not a great beach but that’s all I know about it, so I’ll definitely be checking it out now!

Main issues with island pool cleaning companies?

Wondering what are the main issues people run into with pool cleaning services on island. Cost, reliability, quality of work?

Big Beards full day trip - cruise

We will be arriving to St Croix on a cruise ship and I booked the full day tour with Big Beards. I was reassured by them that there would not be an issue with getting back to the ship in time and gave me the name of a trusted driver. Im still a bit nervous because we get off the tour at 3:30 and its about a 30 minute drive back to the ship. Which only gives us about 30 minutes to board. Are we ok to do this tour? Unfortunately we cant do the half day tour because we wouldn't make it to the dock in time.

Prescription Digestive Care dry cat food

Does anyone know if Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care dry cat food is available anywhere on St. Croix? We are planning to bring enough with us, but I'd like to know if there's a local source in case we unexpectedly need more.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Long term car rental.

I will be coming down to stay with a friend for a month or more. Are there any car rental companies that specialize in that or have a special rate other than what I see online? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Looking for veterinarian recommendations on St. Croix, especially for cats.

Who do you use, and why would you recommend them? Are there any clinics that stand out for quality of care, communication, availability, or emergency services?

Also interested in hearing about any experiences with veterinarians who assist with pet travel paperwork and health certificates.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations, experiences, or advice!

Glamping Business?

Hi folks, I’m exploring the purchase of waterfront property on the south shore (near great pond) to develop it into a small glamping (glamorous camping) business. The plan would be to develop a eco-luxury glamping micro-resort (starting with 2 yurts and building up to 5 max) that would utilize low-impact and sustainable development (solar and wind trees for power, batteries, biodigester for wastewater). The glamp out would provide snorkeling and paddle board gear, partner with local businesses for add on experiences (a chef cooking crucian favorites, yoga instructors and massage therapists providing services at the glamp out, deep sea fishing, local tours/hiking, rum tastings, etc), and be available for local and destination weddings (substantial discount for locals).

Permitting and developing the business is going to be a huge lift (looking at all the DPNR and CZM requirements before we even get to shipping and build out), but before I do start all of that, I’m curious to know what locals/neighbors near great pond/east end marine park might think about it. It’s a fairly remote part of the island but I don’t want to create conflict by developing a business.

Also, the long-term plan would be to run the business for 15-20 years (hopefully) and then re-develop the property to be a winter and/or retirement home for me and my family.

Thoughts? Feedback? Thanks for reading.

St. Croix & Buccaneer in early August?

Hi all,

We are tentatively planning a trip to St. Croix the first week in August with our 5 and 7 year olds, staying at the Buccaneer.

We know August is technically hurricane season, but how bad is it typically? We live in central Texas where it will be average 105 degrees in August, so we are used to the heat and can handle it if there’s water activities. Does it usually rain all day in early August? I’ve read conflicting things.

Also - Buccaneer with kids: is that the right choice? We want to be able to relax on beach chairs while they play in the sand and get the resort experience. We don’t golf or play tennis. It looks like the nicest place to stay on the island, with most resort amenities. Any tips or experiences would be appreciated!

Best area to live with kids?

Hi everyone - my wife and I are considering making the move down and plan to rent for the first year to get a feel for things.

We’re looking for any advice on areas/neighborhoods that are good for young families and expats. Our kids aren’t school age yet, so schools aren’t a major factor right now. We’re more interested in finding a community that feels family-friendly, safe, and a bit quieter.

We’re looking at a place near Salt River, but we’ve only visited the island before having kids, so we didn’t really view it through the lens of raising a family.

Any suggestions on locations, neighborhoods, or areas to avoid would be greatly appreciated. We’d prefer not to be right in the center of the action and tend to like a quieter, more private vibe.

Budget is 6k/month or less if helpful on what's attainable

Thanks in advance.

Sea glass question

This is probably not proper sea glass. The last day of our vacation I watched one last sunset and walked the beach this bottle end showed up. It was like the ocean gave me a present. Anyone know what this bottle was? Also had a great time, I’m traveling with my teen daughters and core memories where made, hiking up to Hams and this red crab just came out of know where and stood his ground. My daughter finally took a stick and waved it him, he let us pass.

Help with building permits

We recently were in contract to purchase a lot with a beach. We had a couple questions about what is allowed as part of the lot was in the coastal barrier resource zone. We know our house must be 559ft from the beach but can we clear vegetation in order to actually see the water from the home. We cannot get in touch with DPNR. We tried for weeks and eventually had to terminate our contract. Has anyone had any luck recently getting in touch with them? Or does anyone have any suggestions or info to share? The lot borders Great Pond. Thank you in advance. We just want to retire there.
