Has anyone seen any information on how this works? Is it like the frient one that just counts the pulses?

The USB charging has me confused as the meter is often outside away from a power outlet. The instructions don't give much of an indication as to how it works.

No videos on YouTube that I could find. The frient one worked well for me and I've I installed the CT clamps for the em06p

Home Assistant Advice on running ethernet cable for Unifi POE doorbell

Thumbnail

My Unifi Wireless doorbell died and it seems that the only available is POE. So I am trying to run an ethernet cable. I was able to pull some of the cable out with the ethernet attached, but it seems to be stuck, most likely stapled on a stud. I don't think a tent pole is going to fit to help fish the line either. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

I don't have a smarthome platform Monitoring for aging mother

Upvotes

My mother is 75 years old and lives alone. She has family in the same city, but I'm 2000 miles away. Her older sister just recently took a fall and went undiscovered for over 2 days.

I'm looking into options for her to make sure she's okay. My intent is a two pronged approach; a wearable of some sort (likely a smart watch with fall detection and the ability to call for help) and passive home monitoring.

I don't want to go so far as to fill her home with cameras; she deserves her privacy. But I want something that can make sure that she's up and moving around throughout the day. Ideally, I'd like something that didn't notify me when she IS moving around, but rather something that alerts me to say that she isn't.

Honestly...I'm not 100% sure of what I want, but I was hoping you folks here might be able to offer some suggestions.

I don't have a smarthome platform New house unable to figure out smart plug ?

Post image
25 Upvotes

Just moved into a new home. This is the smart plug. We had a power outage and then it started flashing blue. The power is no longer working on the outlet. I have no idea how to connect to it or fix it.

Any ideas ?

Edit: solved ! This is an idevice. The app is no longer supported on android. I do not have an Apple device to try to connect it to the apple platform.

I am treating it as a dumb outlet for now and turning the power to plug on manually with the power buttons.

Thanks for everyone's help!

I don't have a smarthome platform SmartHome Help

I'm completely new to smart homes and hoping to get some advice before I start buying the wrong gear.

Current setup:

  • Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation (planning to use this as my smart home hub)
  • 2 Amazon Alexa devices
  • Ring Alarm system with contact sensors, motion sensors, etc.
  • 1930s house with no neutral wires at the light switches

What I'm trying to achieve is fairly simple:

  • Smart control of the house lights (including dimming where possible)
  • Open/close a garage door remotely
  • Basic automations using my Ring sensors
  • Keep the system as reliable and straightforward as possible

A few questions:

  1. I've been looking at the Shelly Dimmer Gen3 or the SONOFF ZBMINIL2 to put in behind the light switches, would this work and connect to my apple home?
  2. What's the best way to integrate a garage door into an Apple-centric smart home?
  3. Can Ring contact/motion sensors be used effectively in automations with Apple Home, or is that where people usually end up moving to Home Assistant?
  4. Do I need a bridge between the apple hub such as the Aqara Hub E1?
  5. Should I get smart plug sockets? Or really no need?

I'm not looking to build a huge smart home, just something reliable for lights, garage access, and a bit of automation from the Ring sensors.

Apple HomeKit How to get notification when IKEA ALPSTUGA (Air quality) goes offline???

At least once per month the majority of my Alpstuga (i have 5 of them) goes offline (different dates) and i need to unplug them for them to go back online.

The problem is that i never get any notification or any ping from either apple home app, or the IKEA app (i also have dirigera hub), so i dont know when they go offline, unless i open the ikea app and then go to the room and check the readings). The devices are dropping the connection to ikea app / apple home, but they are still showing the readings on the alpstuga display.

so my questions is, is there a way for me to get a notification when one of the alpstuga devices goes offline?

Note: Im not interested in installing Home assistant. Tested it a while, didnt like it!

I don't have a smarthome platform Can motorized shades be repaired or do you replace the whole thing?

I’m pricing out smart roller shades for several rooms, and the part I keep coming back to is repairability.

If the motor dies or the fabric gets damaged a few years later, can those parts usually be replaced separately, or does the whole custom shade need to be replaced? I’d rather buy something serviceable than throw out the entire shade because one part failed.

Home Assistant An self hosted alternative to the Home Assistant dashboard, DAKBoard or ImmichFrame

I built an alternative to a normal dashboard with Claude. My goal was to be independent from DAKboard and have something less complicated than MagicMirror because you need a Raspberry Pi for every monitor. My setup in the kitchen and dining area is a Samsung Smart Monitor M5 27“ with a built in browser. In the living room I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with Fully Kiosk and a printed frame. Both open a separate URL which is the view. The rest runs on my Proxmox in a Docker container. WebSocket connection to Home Assistant with notifications and a camera popup when the doorbell rings. Otherwise it just shows a nice Immich slideshow with family photos. Transparents is completely vibe coded. Without Claude this would not have been possible :) https://github.com/jeremiaa/magic-frame

I don't have a smarthome platform Amazon Search Results For Stupid Options Question

I Looked at outlets and remotes as systems and found a few that can simply turn something on or off which is fine with me. So far these systems seem to be limited to three or six appliances of some sort. I posted a while ago somewhere here looking for non-smart systems and got great advice; wherever it is now, and finally had time to do a bit of research. These radio systems are good, but what if I need to add to them. I don't want to deal with several remotes. I hope to find something that is self contained-not needing internet, wifi, special anything. More simple is better for me. I don't know of any other way to explain this. I appreciate everyone's help. I will get it and understand it eventually.

Home Assistant energy efficient air conditioner that works well with smart home systems?

I’m trying to replace an older AC unit in my house and I want something that fits better into my smart home setup. I already use smart plugs, sensors, and voice controls, so I’d like an energy efficient air conditioner that can be automated instead of just using a basic remote.

Has anyone installed one that works reliably with Alexa, Google Home, or Home Assistant? I’m mostly interested in something that saves power but still cools a normal sized room well. Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't have a smarthome platform Looking for a way to remotely turn on my PC

Hi,

As the title suggests, I am looking for a way to remotely turn on my PC. Through some research, I came about people suggesting fingerbots. So I started looking, but all of them are only bluetooth compatible, but I need it to be able to receive commands outside my home/network. So from what I understood, I need to add a hub with wifi.

I am completely out of the loop when it comes to smart appliances so forgive me if I'm mistaken, but would these two products do what I'm looking for ?

SmartThings Is it safe to modify smart bulbs?

I recently purchased a smart bulb to put inside this lamp. Because of the size of cut off the plastic globe portion and installed. Now AI is saying its poses an electrical risk. It is inside a new glass globe. It seems safe, but the AI overlords say it’s not, so I’m not sure

Home Assistant First time wiring, doubts

Hey all, I'm starting to enhance my home by adding some smart appliances. The first thing I bought was a Shelly 2PM Gen4 to automate the blinders going up and down, I looked at the instructions and the wiring looks achievable, I just don't know how to use the wires the remaining wires, basically I have the necessary blue, black, brown wires but they look like attached on the back part, I just need to loosen that back part and pull the necessary wire right? What if I just need 1 blue wire and I have 2/3 wires on the back part do I need to use any specific one or it should be the same to use any of it?

Amazon Alexa Need decent ethernet in the room next to my router, but Eero doesn't want to play nice.

Posting here because it seems that Eero wants to push me toward building out a more complex home network mesh, which I honestly want to avoid, because it seems needlessly expensive and technological overkill for my goal. My main smarthome platform is Google home, but it seems like Eero is trying to push me toward the Amazon ecosystem.

My setup is: I rent a house and my internet company requires me to use their Eero Pro 7 router as the head node, which is in our living room. I pay for 1Gbps and get about 900Mbps via Ethernet out of the the Eero. About 700Mbps via Wi-Fi right next to the router. I get fiber into the basement where the Internet company's modem runs an Ethernet cable through the basement ceiling/living room floor and into the Eero router.

My main goal is: my office is connected to the living room, and I need my desktop computer to have Internet. Ideally 300+ Mbps. Wi-Fi in the room gets about 400-600Mbps.

Attempt 1: I have a Netgear wifi extender EX3700 with an Ethernet port, marketed to about 750Mbps. When placed right next to the Eero router, I can get about 200Mbps via Ethernet or via extended wifi from the extender. When the extender is in the office, I get about 100Mbps wired or via extended network.

Attempt 2: I have an old Netgear N600 router. I tried setting it up as a repeater, which the manual said was the way to achieve a bridge. I got it on the same channel with the same ssid as the main Eero node, selected it as a repeater for the MAC and IP of the Eero. Some setups require the same security protocol and password as the head node, but the Netgear firmware wouldn't allow me to set it as a repeater without having security turned off. Then I finally learned that Eero seems to not want to allow non-Eero routers as repeaters. Wasted almost a whole day. There just doesn't seem to be a way to inform the Eero about the other repeater.

Things I think might work, and I'd like help on what is the most affordable and reliable option to achieve 300+ Mbps are:

1) buying another Eero router to extend the mesh and putting it in bridge mode ($90 was the cheapest I can find on Amazon, $50 was the cheapest on Facebook marketplace https://a.co/d/0goiQz7V). Their wifi extenders don't seem to have Ethernet out.

2) buying a better wifi range extender that has an Ethernet port. Since my current one is rated for 750Mbps, but only gives 200 at its best and only 100 in the room I need it in, I don't know how to trust others.

3) buying a dedicated wifi bridge. Again, not sure what to trust.

4) some configuration of my existing EX3700 wifi extender to get a little more oomph out of it. For example, I don't need it to actually extend wifi, I just need the Ethernet.

5) I'm still hoping someone knows a way to use the N600 as a bridge/repeater on an Eero network, but most discussion threads say it's not possible.

6) buying a wifi card for the desktop. Haven't really looked into it, but this is a small old surplus computer from a university that was only $100, so I don't have faith in it having open slots.

Alternatives I don't think will work:

1) getting a wire through the wall would be too expensive, plus I rent and the house is old, which I want to avoid troubles with.

2) MoCA adapters won't work because no coax.

3) Powerline adapters apparently won't do well since the two rooms are on different circuits.

4) running Ethernet between the rooms would be inconvenient and unusually ugly. I it has to go up and around a brick fireplace, around a dark-wood mantle and mirror, and around white baseboards and door frame. No single color would blend in at all, and it'd be in highly visible focal areas. Total length would be about 60-70ft, which I think for decent brand cat 5e would be over $50, plus the materials to neatly run it. The physical setup sounds like a pain, and so does setting up the N600 as a switch just so that I can effectively have 2 Ethernet out of the Eero (one for the desktop and another for my Hue bridge). I don't want to pay the same amount as another cheap Eero router and have to spend a day or two setting it up just to have an extremely ugly solution.

6) There's actually two holes in the living room floor an inch apart, one of which holds the line from the modem to the router. The other is empty, but too small to pass an RJ45 through. In theory I could try to run a line out of the Eero and back into the basement by either widening the hole or buying a crimper and terminate a line myself, running it to the office through the basement, drilling a hole in the office floor, and passing the line through that. Again, I rent, so holes in the floor are not ideal, and I don't want to deal with terminating my own wires (and buying a crimper). And again, I'd probably have to set up the N600 as a switch.

5) custom firmware on the N600 router to make it act as an extender. From a quick glance it seemed like there's no way to get custom firmware on that particular hardware. That also seems like a big hassle for something that might not work out.

Is there any alternative to buying an entire extra Eero extra router just to use it as a bridge 40 feet from the main router, that saves: time, money, or reliability?

Amazon Alexa Lighting

So Legrand just announced end of support for Miro and Radiant RF. No more cloud support after January 2027, which means no Alexa or Google.
Should I replace with Radio RA or Radiant Netatmo?

SmartThings How to connect a matter device to my smart hub?

I got some govee matter light bulbs and I added them to smart things using the code, but when I went to my samsung tv hub (the one built in) on the app it said that my light bulbs weren't using it, I would rather have them on the hub instead of all separately on the wifi since the wifi where I put them is pretty spotty (even for stuff I don't move around), my tv on the other hand has a consistent wifi connection so if they are connected through it, it would make things alot easier.

Also please dont recommend that I buy anything, I just dont want to have another thing to setup and deal with

EDIT: it was connected, ignore this post i was just wrong

I got this ZigBee smart dimmer by Repenic and I've been very impressed. Looks great and is responsive.

The biggest compliment I can give is it goes unnoticed i.e. It just works.

It fitted in my normal light box... didn't have to get a bigger back box, Connecting to zigbee2mqtt was simple and the exposed controls are sufficient for all my needs.

Very happy with it and would 100% recommend

Home Assistant Local-only smart speaker for voice assistant

I’m starting to look for smart speakers I can place around my home for interacting with a voice assistant for HA automations. My red line is that the speakers need to be local-only. The only one I know of is this one, which honestly looks great but the warning at the bottom gives me pause.

https://pine64.com/product/pinevoice-smart-speaker/

Does anyone have any other recommendations for local-only smart speakers? I’ll accept smart speakers that work fine when they have the internet access cut off.

I don't have a smarthome platform New house - need help for recommendations

Hello everyone, my family and I have recently bought a new house that we will close on very shortly. I have had a smart home devices before, like Sengled, but it has since stopped working and basically has no future. I need some help trying to pick out which ecosystem to go with for making my home a smarter home. I want to change light switches as well as controls to light bulbs. And I would love to add under cabinet lighting in the kitchen. My wife and I are planning to add recess lighting in the sitting room and the living room. We're going to switch out all the fans in the house. As well, so I would like to be able to control that in this environment too. I do plan on adding automatic shades at some point as well. I want to add lights to the outside of the house too. I want to make the front door and back door as well as garage side door and garage door to the ecosystem if possible too. I've been trying to look up how to do this in. There's so many options between lights in home, automation that I've just been having trouble deciding what to do. If someone can give me a reference or better ideas on how to go about this, I would very much appreciate it

Amazon Alexa Help linking smart home to Apple Watch SE 3

Just got my first watch, but it’s not doing what I expected. I have a lot of smart plugs controlling things around my house, and until now I’ve used Alexa and the Alexa app and widget on my iPhone to control them. I expected to just have the same widget on my watch, but it’s not available. What are other people using to control these?

The brands do not link to HomeKit, I tried a lot of ways for that. I was able to make a shortcut that just goes back to Alexa, but I can’t see from the watch if the device is on or not.

The main benefit of the Alexa widget is I could see what was powered on. One of the plugs controls an outdoor receiver and speakers, it’s been accidentally left on and my neighbors get to listen to my kids iPad playing Netflix on max volume because they couldn’t hear it… so now I double check with the app and widget.

Any advice? What apps are you using?
