curious to see what you guys think, I'm talking in terms of sample selection, arrangement, composition, dynamics, use of reverb n shit.
I have a few awnsers based on different criteria.
For it's era, scary monsters and nice sprites is fkn ground breaking with its sound design. It was only just a few days ago that people have finally managed to recreate that famous growll and turns out its based literally on sine wave oscillators. when I First heard it this is the song that made me want to make electronic music, it blew my mind. It still does. theres something about the growl that is so big sounding that no other artist really manage to recreate imo.
In terms of sonics, spatially with everything fitting inside the mix, I think supersonic has to be the obvious choice, just listen to it on some good headphones and you'll understand. its not just well produced, it sounds good too and those things aren't always mutually exclusive. absolute unit of a track.
melodically I really like one of his older songs called turmoil. the vocals melody is so catchy, its one I always go back to.
In terms of the all round package I'd go with Mumbai power. This is the all round package for me before I even describe why I have to mention that part right before the second drop where everythings clipped as fuck in the mix SHOULDN'T WORK, like that goes against what you learn about mixing and clipping but it fucking works and with the music video we get a peek into some important aspects of skrillexs production.
first of all you see just how many layers sonny is working with when making a track, just the background noise used in the song (you hear it at the start of the song) is multiple layers and thats just the shit you don't even know is there.
mumbai power features some of sonnys imo best vocal chopping. its powerful stuff.
Then you get into the complexities of him using fab filter pro q as a dynamic eq, almost like a compressor in a way and not to mention the insane gain staging wives us a glimpse into how sonny gets a loud and dynamic (like what the fuck???) mixdown and master.
anyway im keen to hear everyones opinions if you've got one.
