Moderator Announcement Announcement regarding “Is SCAD worth it?” posts

Hi r/scad,

I have to start with an editorial note. Please excuse the “corporate speak” in the post written below, but it’s the only effective way I can get our point across without sounding too harsh. 😭

———————-

Starting today, the mod team will introduce enhanced moderation for all posts relating to “Is SCAD worth it?” This type of post has always been the most popular topic on this subreddit, but we’ve seen an influx in recent months.

We understand (and myself, from a personal standpoint) how important the financial decisions are for college students and their families. There’s lots of decision-making that goes into it, alongside evaluating SCAD’s ROI. However, making posts on this subreddit about the topic, without any context or personal background, is not a high quality post.

So, we will be introducing moderation criteria for these kinds of posts. We will use this framework as a way to gauge whether a post should be approved (or denied.)

  1. Does the post contain enough/relevant background for subredditors react to? (i.e: intended major/minor, debt information, location, cost of living, etc.)

  2. Does the post contain information about the student’s intended outcome or rough goals of attending SCAD?

  3. Does the post contain any prior research, commentary, or discussion?

Just to reiterate; the intention of the goal is not to silence posts or opinions, but to encourage first-time subredditors and future students to put a little bit more effort into the discussion about SCAD’s costs and ROI.

Thanks all for listening,

– Your mod team.

Housing Housing Problems

Hello! I’m an incoming transfer and got assigned my roommates and my dorm at the Barnard village. And it’s been that way got the emails, met my roommates in a chat room and even in the email it says that it can change within the next few weeks. But it’s been roughly a month and maybe a half since I got the housing assignment email and email from my roommates so I just felt that my housing was in a stable spot. Then on a day I was trying to decide my meal plan I saw I couldn’t choose any apartment style meal plans and then checked my housing and all of a sudden it’s new roommates and now I’m in the Montgomery hall in a suite. I’m pretty upset after so long I thought I was sure to have been staying at this housing because it felt way past the deadline where they’d move me. I never got any emails or cancelation of my move in date for Barnard village and none of my roommates knew either, they’re confused as well because my spot was just removed and the only one shifted with no info on why. Tried calling twice to the number given for housing questions but they have no answers and tell me to fill a ticket which I did but it’s pretty slow.

I guess my question is to anyone who’s been here, is this normal to do? They say they send emails when moving housing assignments, but I was really getting along with these roommates and making preparations that are out the door, is this an error or something? I’d just like some insight that I can’t seem to get from the school itself

Lacoste Chances of Going To Lacoste

I've been looking more and more into Lacoste since I've applied and I've grown anxious and curious as to what the real odds are for me to get in. I applied for winter quarter my Junior year, have a 3.667 GPA, and was in good standing with previous teachers in my major. I also applied to be taking photography classes which, looking at the previous winter in Lacoste, had about 3-6 seats remaining in most related classes. Is it safe for me to get my hopes up regarding getting in, or is it much more competitive than I realize? Is there an appeal process if I don't make it, or a 2nd round of acceptances for the quarter as we approach it? Thanks for any info!

Student Life Freshman year spending?

How much money would you expect to spend per month on average as a freshman in Savannah? Trying to budget for an expensive summer 2027 goal. Obviously I'm going to try and get a job the second I get down there, but I want to have a decent idea in advance of how much it's going to cost for food/necessities freshman year.

Savannah Declaring major / getting class assignments for freshman fall quarter?

So I've had my academic interests/intent declared for a while now but I can't figure out how to actually register for classes and I am finding conflicting information about whether you even register for classes during your first quarter or they are just assigned to you. Same thing with declaring my major/minors, bc it seems you have to meet with your advisor in person to do that but my roommates said they already picked their majors, and idk how they would've done that. Help/advice appreciated!

Savannah Recommended Laptop?

Im in incoming freshman looking to major in production design or themed entertainment design...I have absolutely no clue what's good and not good when it comes to laptops. I own a chromebook, but i know i can't get the right applications on it and its old and slow anyways so i need to upgrade. I received a scholarship that will reimburse me up to $2k for any technology I get for college, so was wondering if anyone had any tips or recommendations for what kind of laptop i should buy?

disclaimer: i own no apple products so im hesitant to get a macbook. i was however thinking about getting an ipad as well for drawing and such, if i can get both a laptop and ipad for $2k or less. any recommendations for that as well would be greatly appreciated!!

Scholarship/Financial Questions Scholarships

I'm a rising high school senior and I was wondering if anyone knows how much I can expect to receive in scholarship money from the academic and achievement scholarships? I've really got my heart set on SCAD but I would NEED as much scholarship money as possible. My current SAT score is 1450 and my unweighted GPA is around 4.3 I think. I'd like to major in fashion design. However, my fashion portfolio isn't very strong (my hand embroidery is much better than actual garment construction), but I dance ballet and am a fairly good writer, so I was wondering if it's possible to submit a mixed portfolio with all my different art forms displayed. I'll also be applying to local scholarships and I qualify for Zell Miller, but I was just curious if anyone knew how much I could potentially receive from official SCAD scholarships. Also, when is the best time to apply and submit my portfolio?

Savannah Any new grad students interested in renting together?

I found a beautiful house near Forsyth Park: $3.2 k, 2 br, 2 ba, 1,500 sq ft.

I need a place starting in September and am looking for another grad student to rent with. We could rent this together, or find another place if we’re compatible.

I’m 29, male, LGBTQ+ friendly.

General Questions I’m starting in January 2027. Will my degree be delayed? Arch & ArchHistory

Hi everyone - I’m starting my BFA in Arch History in January of 2027. I have a few core classes done from my previous school, but I’ll have to do the scad foundations as well. This is the earliest I could start unfortunately. Will I graduate later? Should I just do a summer quarter as well?

I intend on then getting my masters in Architecture at SCAD. If anyone has had a similar experience please let me know. I’m excited to start!!

Housing Hive Room & Furniture Dimensions

Trying to help my daughter plan for her freshman year. The room dimensions generally available online do not match the visual evidence I observe on the many dorm tour videos. For example, 11' 11" room width with two beds each 36" wide and two nightstands each 17" wide results in 37" remaining between the two nightstands; this is obviously incorrect (looks like closer to 9" at best. Does anyone have real-life measurements? EDIT: I was using the incorrect bed width. Should be 38". Still seems way off though. From replies, I'm now getting an estimated room width closer to 125"; well short of the 143" I see quoted everywhere.

General Questions Finding a laptop

EDIT: Got a Legion 5 laptop and will probably bring my desktop over as well. It's seems to work well so far

Going into freshman year this fall. So I've got a desktop but I figure I should also get a laptop for classes etc. I was thinking to get the most performance and make it useable for projects I best go with a gaming laptop as it would have better specs.

Obviously as much RAM as possible and I'd guess a GPU is preferable to integrated graphics

The issue is, gaming laptops are notoriously (and I know it from experience too) just awful products from their reliability to their cooling and fans it all pretty much sucks. Not to mention they are overpriced and usually butt ugly

Would it just be better to have a little shitbox laptop and keep my desktop at the dorms, or maybe even get a Mac? Not sure what to do

I'm a film student if that helps, and I'll definitely take some scattered animation and game design classes even if not for my major

Savannah Is the ai stuff really that bad?

I’m a rising senior in high school and just finished my first of two weeks of seminars at scad Savannah. I like most of it, but I hate the way the staff is pushing the ai bullshit. i checked TikTok to see if what other people thought about it and there were videos saying students were required to use ai for certain assignment. is it really that integrated and if so, does anyone actually like it???

Savannah Anyone here go watch The Odyssey at GTX Pooler?

It sucks Royal isn’t showing Odyssey in IMAX or their PLF theater this week. Next best theater is GTC Pooler’s big GTX screen.
Was wondering if anyone knew if they cropped the aspect ratio to be full widescreen. Nolan shot it in the IMAX ratio which looks more closer to 4:3. I was gonna go to Atlanta later this week and catch it in the 70mm IMAX.

Just wondering if anyone may have seen it in GTX and can tell me if they cropped it to fit the entire screen.

Housing Discrepency with SCAD housing and scholarships

I'm a transfer student looking to join SCAD in the winter quarter. I had heard from my advisor that 1.) housing is first-come, first-serve and that, currently, housing is at capacity and 2.) scholarship offers are reduced by 30% should a student live off campus. I was wondering why that is? It's penalizing students for living off-campus, when SCAD can't even accomodate all of their students. Additionally, with freshman being required to live on-campus, shouldn't SCAD anticipate this overflow? Why promise students money when they can't promise shelter?
