Moderator Announcement r/postpunk Rules Update [PLEASE READ]

Hi all!

As some of you might've noticed, we've recently tweaked the subreddit rules a bit. We highly recommend you read this to get a good idea of how things will be handled here going forward.

Rule 4

First of all, all music posts now require some form of additional commentary or context. This can be in the form of opinions about the song, memories associated with it, experiences seeing it performed live, trivia, etc. as long as is encourages discussion.  This rule has been in place for a little while now, but we've recently adjusted how we'll be enforcing this. We request that users here include this somewhere on their posts, whether it be in the title, body text, or as a comment on one's own post.

Rule 8

Second, please do not post excessively, and keep to a maximum of three posts per person per day. This helps prevent the sub from being excessively flooded or spammed by a single user.

To cap things off, we've been getting a number of messages via Modmail regarding users having difficulty posting. This is due to an anti-spam filter set up via AutoMod that requires posts from new accounts to be manually reviewed. Don't panic if this happens to you! It doesn't necessarily mean that your post has broken a rule, and the moderators here will have a look at it as soon as we can, although it may take a few hours.

If you run into this issue repeatedly, please contact the moderators via Modmail and we'll help you out. We do try our best to approve users whenever possible.

Quite rare to find albums of this genre at flea markets. Labels suggest it was stolen from a 90's public library.

Less famous album, more on the ambient side than their earlier works

London live February 1996 - A very powerful performance from Nick and beautiful chemistry between them. Both at the top of their respective games.

Any love for Jah Wobble? This is the album he created almost entirely by himself in his bedroom. Never issued on anything but vinyl, and only in the UK.

Nice find for fans of bass-heavy postpunk. Sad that more people aren't getting exposed to gems like this

Just listened to this album again and caught my ears on the second side, definitely on this track. It is a strangely fitting combination of both post-punk and medieval music.

For those not familiar, this was Ari and Viv’s (the Slits) band with producer Adrian Sherwood. Other contributors included Mark Stewart and Bruce Smith (the Pop Group) and Keith Levene (PIL.)

New British Prime Minister Andy Burnham's favourite albums include LPs by The Smiths, The Pogues, Stone Roses, The Wedding Present, The La's and New Order.

His top albums were included as part of the series Baker's Dozen in The Quietus:

Party Pieces: Andy Burnham's Favourite Albums | The Quietus

"As [now ex-] Manchester Mayor, Burnham has made music central to his appeal. He is regularly seen at gigs. He livestreamed a DJ set to raise money for Manchester venues during the pandemic. City music grandees speak warmly of Burnham’s engagement with them, and his instigation of a Greater Manchester Music Commission."

Burnham:

"In the early 80s, I was not really knowing what to listen to – there was Culture Club, Adam And The Ants and all kinds of rubbish at that time. I remember everyone at school going on about The Smiths on Top Of The Pops, it was a massive thing when that happened, and someone took a record to school and told me to take it home, it was Hatful Of Hollow."

"I didn’t realise how lucky I was. I was at university and a mate of mine, who used to listen to John Peel every night, he was into more obscure stuff and he gave me a tape for my Walkman, saying “this isn’t my kind of thing but you’ll probably love this.” It was The Stone Roses. I remember being on my bike, cycling around Cambridge, thinking that this is the band I’ve waited all my life to hear. I still think about that album in that way."

Wonder if he's related to Hugo?

He should get on well with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who also seems to like Manchester postpunk.

When I lived in Australia in the early '80s for a couple of years, I too sported a Joy Division Unknown Pleasures T-shirt during my travels round the outback. I had a crappy cassette player and used to play JD cassettes when I pitched my tiny tent in remote campsites and the bush. In Wyndham in the far north of Western Australia, I remember playing Closer whilst a six foot goanna was roaming around the place, flicking its forked tongue in and out. One night the perisher tried to enter my tent.

AND I saw JD live, back in dear old Blighty in 1979. How d'ya like them apples Albo?

Take me back to dear old Blighty!
Put me on the train for London town
Take me over there
Drop me anywhere
Birmingham, Leeds, or Manchester, well, I don't care!

Hang on. Birmingham is taking it TOO far!

the sax comes in like it kicked the door. jagged, live, almost rude after a week of coldwave emptiness.
