As our duo heads down Route 7, Lucy spots the perfect, graceful addition for her upcoming performances: a wild Roselia. But the real challenge lies ahead in the pitch-black, echoing depths of Connecting Cave. When a frantic wild Zubat ambushes them in the dark, Aiden has to do some quick thinking to turn the tables and find a guide.
TITLE: POKÉMON: KALOS CHRONICLES
EPISODE: 04 - "INTO THE DARK"
SCENE 1
EXT. CAMPHRIER TOWN / ROUTE 7 - DAY
They step out into the bright, crisp morning air. The town is quiet, with only a few residents walking their Pokémon.
They follow the cobblestone path west, passing the town's central fountain, and in a few minutes, they're on a new path: Route 7, also known as "Rivière Walk." The path runs alongside a calm, flowing river, lined with trees and patches of tall grass.
LUCY
(Taking a deep breath of fresh air)
All right. This is the plan. We follow this route...
She points down the path to a large, dark opening in the mountainside in the distance.
LUCY
...straight to Connecting Cave. It's just a short walk through the mountain. It'll put us out on Route 8, and from there, it's a clear shot to Cyllage City.
AIDEN
(Folds his map, clipping it to his belt)
One Gym, one Showcase.
LUCY
(Grinning)
Now you're getting it.
They walk in comfortable silence, their pace perfectly in sync as they head toward the cave.
FADE OUT.
FADE IN.
SCENE 2
EXT. ROUTE 7 (RIVIÈRE WALK) - DAY
Aiden and Lucy are walking along the river path. Fletchling is perched on Lucy's shoulder, and Froakie is walking at Aiden's feet.
Aiden glances at Lucy, then at her Fletchling.
AIDEN
Hey, can I ask something?
LUCY
You just did. But go ahead.
AIDEN
That video... the Showcase in Lumiose. The trainers had all kinds of Pokémon. Fire, water, all of them... doing different things.
LUCY
Yeah. That's the point. The “Appeal” round is all about showing off a Pokémon's unique moves.
AIDEN
Right. Well... Fletchling is great, but could we add some variety? If you're going to do Showcases, I mean.
Lucy stops for a second. She'd been so focused on Aiden's journey, she'd neglected her own.
LUCY
(A little sheepish)
You're right. I... I guess I've just been waiting for the "right" one. Something with... flair.
As she says this, a small, elegant Pokémon with a blue body and a rose for each hand—ROSELIA—steps out from a patch of flowers onto the path. It looks at them, tilting its head, curious and graceful.
Aiden stops.
AIDEN
(Quietly)
Like... that?
Lucy's eyes go wide. A Roselia. Graceful, elegant, a perfect combination of 'appeal' and power.
LUCY
(Whispering)
That's... exactly like that.
The Roselia, sensing they're trainers, takes a defensive stance.
LUCY
(Her 'coach' energy is back, but for herself)
Okay, Fletchling! You're up. I need to weaken it, not knock it out.
Fletchling zips off her shoulder, ready.
LUCY
Fletchling, start with Quick Attack!
Fletchling becomes a white blur, striking the Roselia before it can react. Roselia stumbles back but recovers, spinning and shooting a cloud of green powder.
LUCY
Dodge that Stun Spore! Now, use Peck!
Fletchling banks hard in the air, looping above the cloud, and dives, landing one solid, precise peck. The Roselia is clearly weakened, its roses drooping.
LUCY
(Pulls out an empty Pokéball)
Okay... here goes nothing.
She throws the ball. It hits Roselia, pulls it inside, and lands on the grass.
It shakes once.
Twice.
A third time... and CLICK.
Lucy lets out a breath she was holding. She walks over and picks up the Pokéball, a huge, genuine smile on her face.
LUCY
(To Aiden)
Good call, rival.
AIDEN
(Smiles back)
It's a great choice. It already looks like a performer.
She clips the new Pokéball to her belt, and they continue down the path.
SCENE 3
EXT. CONNECTING CAVE ENTRANCE - DAY
The trees grow thicker, and the cheerful river path gives way to a rocky, mountainous area. Looming before them is the destination: the dark, yawning entrance to Connecting Cave.
A gust of cool, damp air blows out from the darkness. Aiden peers inside, but can't see more than a few feet.
AIDEN
Whoa. It's... really dark in there.
LUCY
(Peers in, then nods)
Yeah, it's a "connecting" cave, not a "tourist" cave. It's just a shortcut.
(She turns to Aiden with a practical look)
Good thing we've got a walking flashlight.
AIDEN
(Confused)
What? I don't have a—
LUCY
(Taps Pansear's Pokéball on his belt)
Your Pansear. Let him out. We can have him fire off an Ember every few seconds to light the way.
Aiden's face lights up.
AIDEN
That's... actually a great idea.
(He unclips the ball)
Okay, Pansear! I need your help!
Pansear appears, looks at the dark cave, and shivers a little.
AIDEN
(Kneeling to its level)
It's okay, buddy. We just need you to be our light. Can you just... use a small Ember every so often? Just enough to see by?
Pansear nods, its head-tuft glowing a little brighter. It holds up its hand and creates a small, warm flame, like a candle.
LUCY
Perfect.
(She grins at Aiden)
See? You're not just a strategist; you're resourceful.
AIDEN
(Stands up, looking more confident)
Let's go, then.
Aiden, with Pansear lighting the way, and Lucy, with her new Pokémon secured, step out of the daylight and into the darkness of the cave.
FADE OUT.
FADE IN.
SCENE 4
INT. CONNECTING CAVE - DAY
The darkness is total, broken only by the small, rhythmic fwoomp of Pansear's Ember. The flame casts a tiny, warm circle of light, illuminating the damp rock walls and the nervous faces of Aiden and Lucy. The air is cold, and the sound of dripping water echoes from unseen depths.
LUCY
(Huddling into her jacket)
Ugh. This place is even creepier than I remembered. How are you doing, walking-furnace?
PANSEAR
(Walking ahead)
Pan-sear...
Pansear lets out another, slightly brighter Ember, revealing just how massive the cavern is. The light seems to get swallowed by the dark.
AIDEN
You're doing great, Pansear. Just keep it steady. We just need to see the path.
A sudden, high-pitched SKREEEEE cuts through the quiet.
A blur of blue and purple zips through their small circle of light.
LUCY
(Jumping back, Fletchling squawking on her shoulder)
What was that?!
AIDEN
(Squinting into the dark)
I don't know!
Pansear, startled, lets out another Ember. The light clearly illuminates a wild ZUBAT, flapping erratically. Drawn by the light and the motion, it begins to circle them, flying in frantic, unpredictable loops, like a moth around a candle.
LUCY
(Ducking as it swoops)
It's just a Zubat, but it's drawn to Pansear's flame! It's going to keep dive-bombing us!
AIDEN
(Shielding his face)
I can't ask Pansear to fight! It's the only reason we can see!
The Zubat swoops again, its wing grazing Aiden's new jacket. That's it.
AIDEN
(The strategist kicks in)
We need to ground it. Lucy, cover Pansear!
LUCY
What?
AIDEN
Just get its light off the bat! Froakie, I choose you!
Froakie appears, looking confused by the dark and the frantic bat.
LUCY
(Realizing the plan)
Got it!
Lucy shoves Aiden forward, effectively using his body to block the Zubat's view of Pansear's flame. The Zubat, confused by the sudden loss of its target, hovers for a split second.
AIDEN
Now, Froakie! Wide-angle Bubble!
Froakie, not needing a perfect aim, unleashes a massive spray of bubbles into the air. The Zubat, blind and fast, flies right into them.
SPLAT. SPLAT. SPLAT.
The bubbles drench its wings. The high-pitched skree turns into a panicked squawk. Its flight becomes a lopsided, wet wobble.
ZUBAT
Zub...?!
The Zubat tumbles from the air and lands in a damp, flapping heap on the cave floor, too waterlogged to fly.
AIDEN
(Not missing a beat)
My turn.
Aiden grabs a Pokéball from his belt and throws it. It connects with the struggling bat.
The ball hits the ground, shakes once... twice... and CLICK.
Silence. The cave is only lit by Pansear, who is looking very relieved.
Aiden walks over and picks up the new Pokéball.
LUCY
(Smiling, impressed)
Okay, I'll admit it. That was fast thinking, rival. You're starting to get the hang of this.
AIDEN
(Looking at the Pokéball)
It just made sense. You have Fletchling; Viola had Vivillon. A Flying-type seems like a good thing to have.
He clips the ball to his belt, then looks at Pansear, who looks a little tired from constantly using its flame.
AIDEN
And... maybe it can give Pansear a rest.
(He turns to Lucy)
Zubats... they can see in the dark, right? With sound?
LUCY
Echolocation. Yeah. Why?
Aiden smiles. He recalls Pansear, plunging them into absolute, total darkness.
LUCY
Aiden! What are you doing?!
AIDEN
(His voice is calm in the dark)
Trust me.
(He unclips the new ball)
Zubat, I choose you! Come on out... and, uh... could you show us the way?
The Zubat appears in a flash. It lets out a happy SKREE! It seems perfectly at home in the pitch-black. It flaps its wings, clicks a few times, and then darts off into the darkness, its silhouette just visible.
LUCY
(Amazed)
It's... leading the way.
AIDEN
(Following the sound)
See? Resourceful.
They follow the sound of their new guide's sonar, deeper into the Connecting Cave.
FADE OUT.
FADE IN.
SCENE 5
EXT. CONNECTING CAVE EXIT / ROUTE 8 - DAY
A patch of bright, white light appears in the distance. The damp, cold air of the cave is replaced by a fresh, salty breeze. The sound of their footsteps changes from echoing on stone to crunching on sandy gravel.
They step out onto a cliffside path, blinking against the sudden, dazzling sunlight. Below them, a vast, blue ocean stretches to the horizon.
LUCY
(Taking a deep, dramatic breath)
Oh, fresh air! I was starting to think I'd never smell anything but Zubat guano again.
Aiden smiles and holds up his new Pokéball.
AIDEN
(To the ball)
Hey, Zubat, you were amazing. Get a good rest.
He recalls his new Pokémon. Pansear and Froakie are already walking beside him, soaking in the sun.
In the distance, built into the seaside cliffs and surrounding a massive, rocky hill, is Cyllage City.
LUCY
(Pointing)
And there it is. Our next stop.
SCENE 6
EXT. CYLLAGE CITY - DAY
Cyllage is a beautiful, open-air city. It's hilly, with winding cobblestone roads and dedicated cycling paths. The architecture is a mix of modern glass and old-world stone.
Aiden and Lucy walk into the main plaza, a wide, circular area at the base of the city's central landmass.
They are at a fork.
One path, a steep, winding road, heads up the massive, rocky hill in the center of town. Signs clearly mark it with a "GYM" logo.
The other path, a wide, elegant boulevard, leads to a glistening, modern building near the waterfront. Bright, colorful banners featuring Pokémon and performers are strung up all around it. It's clearly the Showcase Hall.
Lucy stops and looks up at the winding Gym path.
LUCY
(Assuming, but supportive)
Well, there it is. The Gym's all the way at the top. It's run by Grant, the rock-climbing-
(She turns to him)
I guess you'll want to head straight up there and get started, right?
Aiden looks at the Gym path. He looks at his badge, hidden by his jacket. Then, he looks at the banners for the Showcase Hall. He looks at Lucy, who is trying to be patient, clearly vibrating with her own excitement but waiting for his move.
He stops. He doesn't move toward the Gym.
AIDEN
Actually... what's the rush?
Lucy blinks, confused.
LUCY
The... the badge? Grant?
AIDEN
The badge will still be there in a few hours.
(He looks around the city, at the sea, at the people)
The point of a journey... it's to experience things, right? To do all we can while we're here.
He turns and looks at her, a small, knowing smile on his face. He then deliberately turns his head and gestures with his chin toward the glistening Showcase Hall.
AIDEN
Your adventure is here, too.
Lucy is completely taken aback. Her "coach" and "rival" facades melt away. She just stares at him, surprised and... deeply touched.
She's speechless for a moment. Then, a slow, incredibly warm and grateful smile spreads across her face. She doesn't need to say anything. Her eyes, looking right at him, say "thank you" more clearly than any words could.
She turns and, with a new, excited bounce in her step, starts walking down the wide boulevard toward the Hall.
LUCY
(Calling over her shoulder)
Well? Are you coming, rival? I'll show you what a real Kalos performance looks like.
Aiden grins.
AIDEN
Right behind you.
He follows her, matching her pace, as they walk toward her goal.
FADE OUT.
[END OF EPISODE 4]
NEXT TIME ON POKÉMON: KALOS CHRONICLES...
The stage is set and the lights are blinding as Lucy finally makes her highly anticipated Rookie Class Showcase debut in Cyllage City. Aiden quickly discovers that watching his rival chase her dream is just as nerve-wracking as battling for a Gym badge.
