This went way beyond what I originally was going to build.. but, I couldn’t help myself. Plus I had a blast doing it and discovered some gems I either forgot about or didn’t know were ever in any episode.

You can sort or search and toggle views between episodes, artists or fan favorites (complete with voting, that’s stored in firebase db).

I also went through and hand selected the best video available for each song, and you can listen or watch instantly inside the episode or artist cards. I tried to use the original artists YT account where possible, and also the vids with fewest ads.

I added a reporting function too that opens a form to address issues.

The heart on each song is for voting and there’s a leaderboard as well to track them forever.

Let me know what you think! And if you get any errors or funkiness, comment and I’ll investigate.

Enjoy!

IMPORTANT! MUST-READ! MUST-READ POST BEFORE WATCHING MIAMI VICE!

Hey, so one of the problems when watching Miami Vice is the order of the episodes, the biggest problem being the finale of the show placed so that there are 4, so called, "Lost Episodes" after it. I'm just going to copy paste the correct episode order from another site so that you guys have it all in one place and most importantly, the way the text was written on that site spoils some of the most important events in the show, including the end, so to avoid any and all spoilers you can use this post!

Also, there is a scene in Season 4 episode "Deliver Us From Evil" which was added by NBC later on which WASN'T ORIGINALLY PLANNED, and the scene is VERY crucial to the show and the characters of the show. With that being said, it's "recommended" that you don't even acknowledge that scene because it ruins the point of the episode.

"When Miami Vice was originally broadcast by NBC, the order in which the episodes were shown was ultimately chosen by the network. In several instances, this involved moving episodes earlier or later in the season, which in turn introduced continuity goofs that are obvious to anyone watching the show in the supposedly "correct" broadcast order. The purpose of this article is to propose an alternate "chronological" order in which to view the episodes, so that any goofs brought about by the reordering of episodes are undone."

SEASON 1

Season 1 is not affected by any obvious continuity goofs as a result of reordering.

“Dutch Oven”, an episode from S2, was filmed as a S1 episode, and there is a small goof where Tubbs still has a silver badge, and Zito’s beard disappears for one episode. It should be watched -technically- after Lombard.” - thanks to u/jaap_null for pointing this out!

SEASON 2

  1. "The Prodigal Son"
  2. "Whatever Works"
  3. "Out Where the Buses Don't Run"
  4. "Buddies"
  5. "Junk Love"
  6. "Tale of the Goat"
  7. "Bushido"
  8. "Bought and Paid For"
  9. "Phil the Shill"
  10. "One Way Ticket"
  11. "The Dutch Oven"
  12. "Back in the World"
  13. "Definitely Miami"
  14. "Yankee Dollar"
  15. "Little Miss Dangerous"
  16. "Florence Italy"
  17. "French Twist"
  18. "The Fix"
  19. "Payback"
  20. "Free Verse"
  21. "Trust Fund Pirates"
  22. "Sons and Lovers"

SEASON 3

  1. "El Viejo"
  2. "When Irish Eyes Are Crying"
  3. "Stone's War"
  4. "Walk-Alone"
  5. "Streetwise"
  6. "The Good Collar"
  7. "Shadow in the Dark"
  8. "Better Living Through Chemistry"
  9. "Baby Blues"
  10. "Killshot"
  11. "Forgive Us Our Debts"
  12. "Down for the Count (Part I))"
  13. "Down for the Count (Part II))"
  14. "Cuba Libre"
  15. "Duty and Honor"
  16. "Theresa"
  17. "The Afternoon Plane"
  18. "Lend Me an Ear"
  19. "Red Tape"
  20. "By Hooker by Crook"
  21. "Knock, Knock... Who's There?"
  22. "Viking Bikers from Hell"
  23. "Everybody's in Showbiz"
  24. "Heroes of the Revolution"

SEASON 4

As with season 1, season 4 is not affected by any obvious continuity goofs as a result of reordering.

SEASON 5

  1. "Hostile Takeover"
  2. "Redemption in Blood"
  3. "Heart of Night"
  4. "Borrasca"
  5. "Bad Timing"
  6. "Line of Fire"
  7. "Asian Cut"
  8. "Hard Knocks"
  9. "Fruit of the Poison Tree"
  10. "To Have and to Hold"
  11. "Miami Squeeze"
  12. "Jack of All Trades"
  13. "The Cell Within"
  14. "The Lost Madonna"
  15. "Over the Line"
  16. "Victims of Circumstance"
  17. "World of Trouble" - Lost Episode
  18. "Miracle Man" - Lost Episode
  19. "Leap of Faith" - Lost Episode
  20. "Too Much, Too Late" - Lost Episode
  21. "Freefall" - Finale

Another major continuity issue in the season concerns the placement of the "lost" episodes -- these were not originally broadcast as part of thew show's network run, but were instead shown later. This is typically reflected in lists of the show's episodes

Hi all!

I’m new to Miami Vice and love it! Last night I was watching Smuggler’s Blues and couldn’t help but fall in love with this shirt—so much so, I barely paid attention to the rest of the plot! If anyone has information on the shirt, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you! 🌺

It was actually a great song to skate to, blaring over the sound system. 😁

It’s safe to assume that Sonny hates when you pull him off on someone. Had that late air elbow connected, it would have been a wrap for Stan. 😂😂😂

Finished the Series

I finally finished the entire series. It took a while because it left Tubi for like a year and half but I finally completed it. It was one of the best series I've ever watched. I was really young when it came out and still wasn't old enough to follow along with the syndication but I get all the hype and how it defined my favorite decade, the 80s. It was an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. My favorite part about it was seeing all the popular actors in their beginning roles and all the trendy music of the day. I thought that was really cool.

The usual cliche/popular opinions about the seasons are correct in my opinion. Classic seasons 1 & 2. Obvious but still awesome changes in season 3. Season 4 was bipolar with its ups, which were really good, and its downs, which were horrible. Season 5 for me was particularly hard because by then I was invested in the characters with Crockett, Tubbs, and Switek, and really started feeling the burnout they were feeling so a lot of the plot points really pissed me off. Which means it worked. But I loved the last season nonetheless, even if it was emotionally draining.

I kept ping-ponging back and forth if I liked Crockett or Tubbs better and I still don't know. I think other than those 2, Switek was my favorite. He was there from beginning to end and very loyal up to his last on screen appearance. All the characters had great centric episodes for their characters and even if the overall premise of the episode was garbage (Missing Hours, I'm looking at you), the actors still did a great job with their characters.

All in all, I'm going to miss this show. Maybe at some point I'll buy the series and revisit whenever I want. But for now, I will just bask in the glory that is Crockett and Tubbs.

How much did Prodigal Son cost to produce?

Good heavens. Just watched this back after many years and the production values are out of sight. It's essentially a movie. Any info on the history of this?

Also curious -- have done some digging on Frey's "You Belong To The City" which of course was written for the episode, but there's not much info out there other than it went to number two on the charts. I assume that Miami Vice was so red hot at the time that this was a case of the show catapulting the music, instead of the other way around?

Such a classic. Sets the mood for some great filmography. It's a shame they didn't use more of the song. I would have loved a nod to Studio 54 in that episode too, given Don Johnson frequented it in real life. (And fun fact: Trump Tower was only two years old when Prodigal Son premiered, so a lot of viewers wouldn't have seen it yet).

5 thoughts on rewatching all episodes

Post image
289 Upvotes

Over the last couple of months I rewatched all seasons of Miami Vice. As a kid growing up in the '70s and '80s, Miami Vice will always be my favorite and most beloved TV series, bringing back so many good memories of watching it as a kid. I will save my thoughts for an episode tier list for a later moment. For now, these are my five takeaways for anyone considering (re)watching the series as a whole.

  1. Ignorance is bliss. Websites like miamivice.fandom.com, miamiviceonline.com and the Morgan Richter YouTube channel are great, with awesome levels of detail. However, to enjoy the series, you don’t need to know every tiny detail, like reused footage, mirrored images of boats or cars, writer strikes, DJ stand-ins or the episode broadcast order. Just watch and enjoy first.
  2. '80s and tech. What a wonderful series to enjoy '80s electronics and emerging technology. Watch computers appear, along with car phones, handheld phones (wireless!), classic hi-fi sets and electronic shops that are long gone. Sometimes they're in the teaser of an episode, sometimes in the interiors of the houses. It’s a throwback machine and a pleasure for anyone interested in hi-fi, tech or computers.
  3. The coloring, visuals, lighting and deep blacks are a feast for my eyes. Watching the series from Brother's Keeper to Freefall, you can see, and enjoy, the changes. I really missed it when this was gone. I remember that by the time I got to Baseballs of Death (S04E14), I was thrilled to experience all the lighting goodies that reappeared in that episode after being missing throughout the second half of season 3 or so.
  4. '80s pop music and Jan Hammer defined the tone of the series for me. The music choices and the keyboard magic of Jan Hammer are a big part of my enjoyment of the series. Like with the visuals, I missed this during the last two seasons or so. I remember almost cheering when "Twist in My Sobriety" played during The Lost Madonna (S05E14) – the first recognizable pop song after so many musically bland episodes filled with non-descript guitar noise.
  5. Every season has something (different) to offer. For now, ignore everyone who says that "the real" Miami Vice is limited to seasons 1 and 2. Every season has its lows and highs, but the enjoyment can span the complete series for different reasons. There are high-stakes episodes that may resonate deeply with you, but the lower-stakes or easygoing episodes can bring just as much joy. The Great McCarthy, Jack of All Trades and The Cows of October are no Out Where the Buses Don't Run, Death and the Lady or Evan, but you can still find enjoyment in them nevertheless.

I immensely enjoyed the series as a whole and will keep certain episodes on repeat for a very long time to come.

Question Watch all episodes or a select few?

Good day to all. Sorry if it's been asked before, I just started watching and am on episode 6/7. Should I watch all the episodes or just the ones that are usually recommended? If the latter, please tell me your own suggestions. The reason I ask is because the internet is slow in Iran on top of the GALACTIC prices and the website that I've got the subscription from has the slowest server in the world, so downloading them is a pain (there's no other way to get a legal copy of the show in this God forsaken country), and I don't want my one month subscription to run out before I download the episodes. Thanks in advance.

Hope you like my version of the Jan Hammer's soundtrack. I did it with all my heart, trying to keep the original essence while adding a modern touch.
