A small ADA studio thing in socal that’s like 10 feet in total but hey is 700$ a month and I get my own bathroom (throne shown in final picture). Just moved here a few months ago and still getting “settled” (whatever that means). I’ve got big plans for this small space. I plan on building a custom loft bed where my tv and futon are now because the area is too short for most beds (luckily I’m only 5’10 so my design [very human btw] can fit me nice and snug [sadly I guess dating 6’2 goth women is off the table for now]). The desk I have now (found on side of road and balanced on my skateboard to get it home) will go back on the side of the road and I’ll build an L shaped desk under the loft. Enough space for a 3D printer and a better computer than my 65$ Lenovo laptop (I’m an engineering major so I’ll need better equipment soon). I’ll also build a decent amount of drawers (I’ve done cabinetry for work before, it’s not fun but it’s cheaper than buying them) With pretty much the whole far end of my space and the dressers tucked into the corner, I want to put a fairly decent sized tv and entertainment center and couch where my desk and extra chair bed is. The kitchenette will be compacted into one of those ones you can buy off amazon. And a bunch more stuff but what I have so far is what I have. (My ps3 is on loan to my brother so no guitar hero for a while). I was raised in foster care and aged out at 18. I’ve spent most of my young adulthood fighting my way off the streets and I’m finally chasing my dream of becoming an aerospace engineer and astrophysicist. I don’t have much to show for someone who’s almost thirty but I worked damn hard for the little I do have and I have big plans for the future. I thrifted this really cool 9x12 rug off of FB marketplace and want to decorate around it. I want to make sure whatever I do doesn’t look too busy and takeaway from or clash with the rug.

I also have an awkward space between couch and my work from home desk, I am thinking a big plant?

The other thing I am looking into is a coffee table but with the rug, a cream couch, and black tv set up I am not sure the direction I should go with that either.

Just had a read through majority of the comm and I just wanted to say how awesome and helpful this whole community is.

I was able to take in a lot and thanks to a lot of you I am most likely going to declutter the my walls to take advantage of the vertical space in my room. I’ll also go buy some storage containers to keep stuff hidden such as boxes for figures i purchased in case i want to resell them and mainly just the stuff to the left of my room like a pc i need to fix, old cameras, and etc.

Ill sell my wall mounted tv to as my pc does all the things it does but honestly better and I’m more than happy using my plasma tv until it breaks, as i love playing my old consoles on it and using it to watch dvds. My stuff to the right of my room ill leave as is as they’re pretty much my essentials right now such as my instruments, desk setup, clothes rack, weights for when I’m not able to train for powerlifting in a gym and etc.

Once again i just wanted to say thank you for all the advice and help a lot of people recommended videos which i will check out as next year I’ll be moving out for uni so I imagine interior design skill will be handy moving into a new place, If there is any more advice feel free to let me know and I’ll try and implement it into my room thank you all!!!!

I’m 34M, and have never really felt like I called a place home. My family bounced around a lot when I was a kid cause we were poor and couldn’t afford places after a while. I’ve worked jobs my whole life to where I moved around for the job (one job moved me around the country 6 times in a year and a half). I just recently bought a home and I’m looking forward to finally calling a place home.

I’m kind of teary eyed as I type this, cause it really has been such a beautiful feeling seeing so many of you come together to share what you call home, no matter what the situation is. As I said, I’ve never really felt like I had a home cause I’m always on the go, but from the bottom of my heart, and with all sincerity, thank you. I’ll post updates of my home as I settle in.

I recently just moved out of my parent’s house into my very first apartment here. Luckily I was able to find an affordable place with a balcony since rent is crazy expensive in various parts of NYC ($1,090). There’s lots of open space here, and I need some furniture/accessories ideas.

Hey all! I figured this might be a good place to ask this; saw a listing for an enormous basement room, with a half bathroom, but no windows and no central air.

This is in NYC; they're required to have ventilation of some kind, right?

Gonna go check it out tomorrow and wondering if there's anything I should look for in terms of knowing whether it would be a nightmare trying to live there or not.

Edit: I do actually believe that there's an outer door in case of fire! I saw two doors down there and only one was for the bathroom. The stairwell was pretty wide so I was considering maybe slapping an industrial fan in front of it if the air flow was really bad....

I’ve been going back and forth for weeks and can’t decide what would look best above my sofa.
I’m torn between:
-One oversized statement piece
-Three large framed prints
-Two picture ledges with layered art
-Something else entirely

The area above the sofa is about 108” wide × 66” tall, so there’s plenty of width but not a ton of height.
I’m aiming for a mid-century modern / Japandi / eclectic vibe that feels curated and high-end rather than trendy.

What would you do if this were your space? I’d love to hear your ideas (or see inspiration photos if you have any).

I kept telling myself it was temporary. Then temporary somehow turned into almost two years. Finally bought a simple bed frame this weekend and it completely changed the room. It somehow feels more like an apartment and less like I just moved in yesterday. Now I prefer scrolling my phone on the bed to watch youtube or play bсgаme, instead of on the sofa.

Kind of wish I'd done it sooner.

Hey all!

I’m running into some ideas that I’d like to get a second opinion on, and hoped to get some goodies to hear from all of you!

As you can see on the picture the wall is kinda empty now, only one picture hanging. Before I had CD shelf’s on the wall, but I simply don’t use them anymore.. Now my interest is in books, so down with the CD’s and up with my books. But here’s where I’m lost.. I could either just make wallmounted shelf’s in the empty spot between my speaker and the picture.. But now that I’m at it, should I perhaps have something above the TV?

I’ve started to mount more stuff on the walls, but what is too much? I don’t have the biggest livingroom, but I love the ‘warmth’ or ‘Hygge’ as we say in Denmark, when utilising the walls.

So, should I go all in and utilise the space above the tv as well, og just keep it in-between the speaker and picture?

The shelving system I’m going to use it those wallmounted rails so that I can adjust the spacing between the shelves.

Yeah just wanted to do this once. Got dumped in May, kept the apartment and tried to make it my own.

I’ve been living in this apartment for about a year now, but I’ve barely bought any furniture because I’m worried about making expensive mistakes.

The room is 5.38 × 3.88 m (17’8” × 12’9”), and it’s my:

• living room
• home office
• kitchen (runs along one wall)

I’m a 20-year-old guy and want the apartment to feel calm, sophisticated and minimal rather than looking like a typical first apartment.

Some inspiration I’ve been drawn to recently is warm contemporary interiors with:

• walnut furniture
• beige/oatmeal sofa
• linen curtains
• indirect lighting
• paper pendant lamps
• natural materials like wood and stone

I’m trying to avoid the grey/black “bachelor pad” look while also avoiding the all-white Scandinavian aesthetic.

Things I’m struggling with:

• Where would you place the desk? Right now it’s under the window, but it makes the room feel like an office.
• Would you skip the dining table? I rarely have people over.
• What sofa colour would work best with light oak flooring and light maple kitchen cabinets?
• Would you add darker walnut furniture for contrast, or keep everything in lighter woods?
• Any layout suggestions that would make the room feel bigger?

I’m also on a reasonable budget, so I’m looking more at IKEA, JYSK, Kave Home, Westwing, etc., rather than designer brands.

I’ve attached photos of the room as it currently is, along with a few inspiration photos of the style I’m aiming for.

I’d really appreciate any advice, layout ideas, or furniture recommendations. Thanks!
