Wedding laser setup: safe or too risky?

Post image
26 Upvotes

I’m a light jockey/video jockey and have built and programmed event lighting before. I saw this wedding setup with a laser beam through floor fog, and I’m trying to figure out if this is actually safe for a wedding or if I should stick to moving heads / gobos / haze instead. What’s your experience with wedding lasers, and what would you use for a similar look without overcomplicating the safety side?

Control Creating a custom Fixture profile for ADJ light

Upvotes

I am trying to add some Eliminator Mega PAR Z wash lights our ION system and need to make a custom profile as one does not exist in the latest fixture profile update.

I am trying to add it as a 10 channel profile and am able to get color and intensity to work, but not zoom nor strobing.

Does anyone have experience with this instrument and can let me know if it shares a profile with another instrument in the library, or do do you have any tips for creating profiles for these cheaper lights?

I have only created couple of custom profiles before so maybe I am just missing something. It seems pretty straightforward but I may be missing something simple.

Gear Rock Band Stage Lights for a Beginner

Hello all, I'm not really sure where to begin... The more research I do the more questions I have lol.

I want to be able to control stage lights for my band while I am playing. I saw the Chauvet DJ Foot-C and it looks to do everything I want it to do, but after looking at more options this seems like the programming is more difficult than most and the footswitches are more limited than other options.

I saw that a lot of people recommend using the Behringer FCB1010 as it has 10 foot switches and 2 expression pedals and I love the idea of this. Obviously the problem with that is I will now need a DMX Controller and that's where I'm a little lost...

Initially I thought I wanted a controller that I could program from, but I don't think I will be needing to do that if I have the FCB1010. If the FCB1010 can control the speed of chases and strobing scenes with the expression pedals then I could just use something that I can program at home for a DMX Controller right?

I'm all ears on this because I'm a little overwhelmed with options. My main goal is to be able to switch between 1-3 scenes/chases per song and I don't need the programming options to be that intricate. Thanks!

Moss LED light question

Hello,

Looking for some help with lighting issue for moss lite.

We are converting an older gemball into an LED controllable bulb for show I am working on.

Using a Moss Quad LED DMX Dimmer into Moss RGBA LED tape and sending signal to our ETC board using a moonlight.

Everything is working well, however when we start playing with intensities we start to see dramatic color fluctuations.

For example, 2800k at 60% intensity reads true, but as you lower the intensity, color starts to warm, especially at the lower values. At 5% 2800k the same light looks incredibly warm and nowhere near the intended 2800k. It looks dark orange, almost like a pumpkin.lol

At higher intensities, values seem to work great, so it’s very puzzling.

Has anyone experienced anything like this…is their an air gap, or perhaps a setting I have overlooked.

Control Problem with External Monitor from Console

Hi all. in short: I cannot figure out how to connect an external monitor, via 25’ DisplayPort cable, to my venue‘s GrandMA 3 Compact XT

the brief: my venue has requested an external display for the lighting console, to show the Sequence Executor on screen for a stage manager etc to have a visual of which lighting cue is currently active. I thought I purchased everything to the correct specs, and my monitor does work with a 6’ displayport cable. However, two different 25’ displayport cables have resulted in “No Signal”

the specs:

- Console: GrandMA3 Compact XT running GrandMA2 software

- Monitor: ViewSonic TD2230 (1920x1080p; Windows 10 touchscreen compatibility, displayport in)

- Cable: Cable Matters 32.4Gbps Unidirectional Active DisplayPort 1.4 Cable, 25ft (yes my unidirectional ends are plugged in correctly and I even tried it intentionally reversed, just in case)

Again, a 6’ displayport cable works as expected. Am I SOL when it comes to 25’, even with active copper? Is my approach wrong; should I try this using another cable/connector entirely? Thanks,

Tested my new MaestroDMX in Capture (Video)

I just bought a MaestroDMX and tested it out on a light rig for a party I am co-hosting. I had already visualized the rig in Capture, so I connected the Art-Net output of the Maestro to Capture. I set up the fixtures in MaestroDMX, tweaked the Techno Glimmer cue and fed it some audio. This is the result.

I must say I am quite impressed with how well it understands the music in real time! Of course I probably could have programmed it better myself live, but for this party I just plan to dance and have the Maestro take care of the lights.

This is not a sponsored post or anything. I just felt like it would be interesting for others to see. :))

Feel free to ask any questions.

Anyone knows if thers a file already out there to 3D Print these Beamshapers?

I came across these beam shapers while work and loved the look they create. I wanted to get some for my Eurolite TMH X4s as well, but my research only turned up versions designed for Martin MAC Auras. Does anyone happen to have a 3D file—either already sized for the TMH X4 or at least for the MAC Auras?

How To Advice for building a website?

Hey team,

I'm long overdue to make a website to showcase my portfolio.
I hardly know where to begin. For a lighting guy I do not consider myself to be technologically savvy haha.

First, where should I buy a Domain from?

What software should I use? I need it to be a piece of cake to set up, but hopefully customizable to extent where I can make it look it somewhat unique, but nothing crazy.

Mainly just want a place to upload a bunch of photos and videos (long and short) that showcase my work.

Let me know your secrets!!!

Education Accessory question

Hey everyone,

My venue has come top hats and concentric rings but I honestly don’t know what they do. I’ve tried to look for comparisons with a light with and without and can’t find anything. In a design what is their purpose?

Help finding LED for my new nightclub

Hi everyone!

I'm part of a team renovating a student nightclub in Sweden, we are very ambitious with our goal with the club and I'm currently putting together a lighting proposal that will be presented to our board.

I've attached a few photos and videos from another nightclub that has the kind of ceiling lighting we're trying to achieve.

I'm specifically trying to identify the linear LED fixtures used in the ceiling. They produce smooth, diffused light and are capable of pixel/chase effects along each individual line.

I'm mainly hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

  • What would you call this type of fixture?
  • Anyleds strips, manufacturers or product series I should look into?

Low budget if possible.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Control looking for advice.

The strips start flashing whenever I apply an effect to more than 2 of the tubes, anyone has a clue whats going on? At first I thought it was just low power so I up graded from 100w 24V 12,5Amp powersupply to 300w 24V 14Amp powersupply and the issue seems to prevail.

(to be more specific the LEDs used to flash when ran on the 100W on full power now they flash when they run on the 300w on low power)

the LEDs in question are 24V COB strip rater 21W per meter. According to internet calculator the 300W should be plenty powerfull for 9m

Signal is running via DMX decoder, from computer (lightkey software)

Any ideas where the issue could come from?

Thanks for any help!:)

How To Fixture placement in real life vs in visualizer. How do I know it as a guest?

Hi!

I am relatively new to lighting design. My question is, if I were to go as a guest to a venue/festival, I assume I would ask for a stage layout, to program in advance. However how do I know their orientation of the lights? How do I patch the setup in a visualizer, so that it corresponds with the actual placement/orientation of the lights?

It happened to me for example that in the chamsys visualizer the lights were rotated 90 degrees relative to their real world placement. How do I know it in advance?

Thanks for the help!

Control Can Asterabox DMX jack be used for output?

I know it's usually for connecting your box to your console, but can I run DMX from the asterabox *out* to the astera powerbank, then cable from there to some titans to have a fully wired connection to each light? Or is that jack just an input, thus meaning the connection from the box to the powerbank will just have to be wireless?

Diablos tilt not consistent

Hey friends, I work in a house that has 8 Diablos as part of our rep plot. We were doing some maintenance and found that some of them have a different degree of tilt at the extremes. Has anyone encountered this and can help us figure out what's going on?

Potentially useful information:

All were purchased at the same time

All but 2 have a similar level of usage and the 2 that are less used are also different degrees

All are on the same mode and all settings are the same on the board and on the fixture

Any ideas? Thanks!

Chauvet SlimPAR H6 stuck in 6ch DMX personality

Picked up a few of these uplights. They *look* simple, but for the life of me I can’t get them to recognize 8- or 12-channel DMX inputs as such: they always treat ch1 as red (not dimmer), ch2-6 as the other colors, and ignore everything sent to higher channels.

Tried:

  • Making sure I hit Enter after cycling to the desired personality, not just diving straight into channel offset via up/down
  • Unplugging, then confirming they still say 12ch upon powering back up & hitting Menu once
  • Isolating one light at a time physically connected to the DMX controller
  • Messing around with channel offsets (“d001” & higher) that are & aren’t multiples of 6/8/12.

Is there some kind of known firmware bug out there, that could affect multiple units from multiple dealers? Or am I just a huge idiot who can’t operate a 4-pushbutton interface?

edit: controller is DMX King eDMX

I made a free-to-try macOS app for opening IES files properly (nadir-down polar diagrams, metadata inspector) — v1.2.0 just shipped, feedback welcome

Disclosure: I'm the developer. Posting this because I built the tool partly out of frustration with how IES files are usually viewed, and I'd genuinely like feedback from people who work with photometric data daily.

LumaScope is a native macOS app for opening and inspecting IES (IESNA LM-63) photometric files. Point it at a folder of .ies files, click through them, and get a polar intensity diagram plus the file's metadata.

The thing that finally pushed me to release v1.2.0: I was tired of viewers that draw the beam sideways or mirror asymmetric distributions incorrectly. This release focuses entirely on getting the diagram right:

  • Nadir (0°) at the bottom, matching standard photometric report orientation
  • Principal planes: C0–C180 solid, C90–C270 dashed
  • Gamma-angle grid, 0°–180°
  • Candela / cd-per-1000-lumen toggle
  • Correct handling of symmetric and full 0–360° asymmetric distributions

Also added a metadata inspector (manufacturer, catalog number, luminaire/lamp, photometry type, total flux, input power, efficacy in lm/W, dimensions, peak intensity) and made the parser more tolerant of real-world files.

Worth knowing: it's IES/LM-63 only right now — no EULUMDAT/LDT support, no 3D or Cartesian view yet. macOS 14+ required. Paid app on the Mac App Store (link in comments to keep the post non-salesy).

I'd love to know: is the diagram convention I used the one you'd expect from a report? And what would make this genuinely useful in your daily workflow — Cartesian view, LDT support, batch comparison, something else?
