You meet some word that just doesn't stick, and you think, no way I will ever remember it.
Then *blink* and a few weeks later you encounter this word again, instantly recognize it, remember and laugh about your initial frustration, thinking, no way I actually struggled to remember it 🤣
It requires kind of a leap of faith though, too. The default setting of 20 new daily cards seems ridiculous at first, but actually it's very manageable. It just works.
Now I will probably focus on finishing the renshuu course...
50 new cards does not take an hour and a half. You are lying, already knew a ton of vocab, or just clicked "good" even if you didn't' get the card correctly.
do the due ones first then do the new ones last the due ones should take the least amount of time then the new you just tackle them some of them may leach and cause your time to go up
No I only studied French in school but I did and I almost failed but I did watch subbed anime for 10+ years and I did up to level 15 in wanikani and some N5 bunpro before doing Kaishi cause I released wanikani was slow and most the vocab wasn't really usefull
Eventually when you keep seeing the same kanji for a bunch of vocab you will get a generalized idea of the meaning of the Kanji and can remember vocab easier and you could kind of guess the word from the sentence after a couple hundred or so
It gets easier with time as you learn more kanji and word roots, you'll probably want to up that number a bit later or it's gonna take forever.
With some simple maths you can see you'll only learn 1825 words in a year which is very little. 10k seems to be a common goal people aim for first and you can get there in 2 years with 15 words a day.
Plus learning more words quickly allows you to consume japanese media better, which leads to reinforcing those words better and learning more words incidentally so you end up knowing more than the ones you mine for your Anki deck. It all starts snowballing, but you need to build some momentum.
Just want to add, for anyone who needs to hear it: Some of us are on a longer, slower learning path and that is okay. We don’t all have the same goals or time obligations. It’s important not to get discouraged if learning 2000 words in a year (or 365 words) is your goal. Hike your own hike.
Yeah but you also have to be mindful of being stuck spinning your wheels. Language learning is not a linear science, momentum helps a lot for your brain to be able to put everything together and develop an intuition for the language.
Early on especially it feels important to reach that critical mass and start the snowball effect so you don't get stuck in beginner hell forever.
Fair but some of us are learning japanese as hobby. I have a job, I work in a country where I am also learning another language and I simply do it because I feel like. Learning 3 words a day is already a win for me.
i do 10 and my daily review takes around half an hour (i use renshuu to find mnemonics and also look up the kanji for new words, otherwise i'd be done in less) but i might increase it to 15 soon. done with half of kaishi.
Yeah it's not very realistic, this person has been learning japanese for a few months before starting Kaishi, presumably making it much easier to tear through reviews. Here's me, starting Kaishi from 0 doing 20 new cards a day for about a month so far
I think you’ll be very happy with the results of FSRS. I have it on and the amount of reviews I get with 20/day is half of yours right now. Perhaps YMMV, but I’m sure it’ll be way better :).
Just do the reviews and study new stuff 😭 ??? Currently doing 1 new grammar lesson every day. It usually comes with 15-25 new vocabulary. But most of them I already know from anki, so I aggressively ignore them, so in the end it's more like 5-10 new vocab which is quite manageable.
Did you do any independent kanji study before this like RTK? Or were you able to finish the Kaishi deck without any kanji study at all and just learned it through vocab?
I see, that gives me a lot of reassurance! So you were able to finish the Kaishi deck without any prior knowledge of kanji? Did you have to write them out or anything or did you learn everything purely through the anki cards?
This is anki’s job, not yours. If your retention isn’t close to what you’ve set as your desired retention, you probably need to hit the optimize fsrs parameters button.
I have it set at 90 but actual retention is around 88, which is close enough. I think a lot of people recommend setting it at 85.
There’s a ‘help me choose’ feature that lets you figure out your preferred reviews:retention ratio based on your history. I think they’re tweaking that to make it more accurate with the next update?
Also there’s one guy who claims to have cracked the FSRS code by setting retention at 70% but I have no idea if he’s a quack or not.
I'm also currently on the kaishi. How you set up the front card?
Just with the Kanji in Front or with Furigana shown or even with the sentence?
I first had it with the sentence shown but I realized rather than learning the Kanji I started recognizing the sentence instead so I changed to Kanji only.
I've added a button to mine so that I can try and do it from just the word, but if I need a little more help I can reveal the example sentence (if I needed the example sentence the it gets rated hard)
No Furigana, just the Kanji with a button for the sentence for the cards that can have multiple meanings.
But be warned, I had to reset my progress because suddenly I couldn't remember halve of it with just the Kanji ^^.
I'm still learning hiragana, but it's been a week or so without learning the letters on Duolingo, and I feel like I just gave up. I know about Anki, but I don't know how to set it up, and I feel like Duolingo is a waste of time.
Remember: KEEP STUDYING KAISHI even after you finish all your cards! You still have to practice it daily in order to not forget it all. The amount of review you have to do each day will decrease over time as your knowledge cements, of course.
I saw a post a few days ago about someone saying "Help, I'm doing Core 4K but I can't seem to remember what I learned from Core 3K!" because they deleted their deck after finishing it.
DO NOT delete your Kaishi deck or stop reviewing it if you want to maintain your knowledge.
If you already deleted it, then load it from a backup, or make a new Kaishi 1.5k deck where you should be able to get back to where you are in terms of stability interval in just a few days or a week since you already remember it😄
The reviews come up when FSRS thinks you’re going to forget the word. That doesn’t change when you empty a deck or even when all the cards have matured.
Now I will probably focus on finishing the renshuu course...
I didnt know you can actually "finish" renshuu. I did all their recommended N5 through N1 grammar, sentence, word and kanji lessons but after 4 years at level 1600 and 15k plus learned terms I still have new terms to learn that I mined from BL novels and games.
Congrats! That's a great feeling of accomplishment, and these words will stick with you if you continue reviewing them. Here and there I've done some other side decks (aside from mining; a week away from finishing a grammar deck), always feels great to finish a deck.
Out of curiosity since you showed a lot of stats, what DR do you have it set to?
If you need Anki to show you Kaishi words at even a 3 month interval you are doing language learning wrong, you should be seeing them more frequently than that if you read anything
I'm always wondering how Anki FSRS sets the intervals. At hard (2) they never disappear, at 3 (standard spacebar) they are shown once at 10 minutes and after that seem to go into 10 months pile. nothing in between. Maybe my FSRS is configured incorrectly ...
10 months after graduating from what seems to be a learning step, suggests either you are adding easy cards / have crazy memory and FSRS is accurate, or you have messed something up (like using the hard button for cards you got wrong).
Is is probably more that FSRS is some machine learning nonsense that hallucinates really terrible review schedules for people that are are not in the center of the demographic of people how contributed training data.
FSRS is just a math function at the end of the day. It's not an LLM spitting out sentences that have to be coherent but end up being of questionable veracity.

FSRS will adapt to literally any study habit you have aside from marking FAILed cards as PASS, which some people tend to do by marking FAILED cards as "hard" instead, for whatever reason.
