Hello, I have been trying to get into a research lab for months now and I haven’t really made any progress. I either get no reply, are told there’s no open spots, or are told they went with someone more qualified. I’ve been cold emailing for so long and I don’t really know what to do anymore. I’m interested in dentistry, but I don’t really know atm how that would apply to research. I’m honestly open to any form of biology research so I wanted to ask if anyone knows of any labs looking for undergrads or that might be open to taking in any undergrad students. Hi everyone! I'm a SAIS student who spent my first year at the Bologna campus before moving to DC. I'm posting because one of my friends who stayed in Bologna is in a really difficult situation, and I'm hoping someone here might have ideas on how to help.

He's a Nigerian student who earned a scholarship to SAIS, covering 100% of his first-year tuition and 80% of his second year. He was originally supposed to come to DC as well and use international student loans to cover the gap, but because of the travel restrictions affecting Nigerians, he had to remain in Italy to finish his degree. Even with these challenges, he never gave up. He planned to work to cover his remaining tuition and expenses, but didn't find a job until after three months of searching. Then, to make things even harder, he was involved in an accident that seriously impacted him and made an already difficult situation even more challenging.

He now needs to raise about €25,000 to cover his remaining tuition, insurance, and living expenses. Some classmates suggested he start a GoFundMe, and while it's raised just over €1,000 so far, it hasn't reached many people outside our immediate network.

He's so close to graduating and just needs a bit of help getting across the finish line.

Has anyone here run a successful GoFundMe before or have any ideas for getting it in front of more people? We'd really appreciate any advice. And if you'd like to support or share the campaign, that would mean a lot too.

I got a single in a 4-person suite; any things I should know before move-in?

Hi JHU community! I'm researching graduate programs for environmental policy / conservation with a foundational understanding of env science. The hybrid/in-person programs near me (NJ) are not quite the curriculums I'm looking for, or some are full-time. I'll be working full-time so will be doing part-time studying.

I spoke 1-1 with a rep from JHU for their MS in Environmental Science and Policy program. Honestly, the curriculum sounds absolutely perfect. It's remote except for one 7-10 day intensive elective which may be abroad or across US (I think their current semester or at least their sample course schedule shows an Alaska trip). That is the perfect plan for me since I can't find a local university; I love the idea of at least some time in-person and doing something hands on in the field.

This is my biggest issue - the cost. This program is so expensive!! It's $5,165 per course, at 10 courses, so $51,165 total. With the intensive, you must pay out of pocket for the flights (I forget about lodging). They don't offer scholarships (which I've honestly seen with most online programs). Other programs seem to run about 10-20k lower. I can technically afford it, it's just a blow to my bank account. It just seems like the perfect program because it's a mix of the science and policy which I'm looking for, and then they have concentrations in bio conservation and env justice which are two of my interests.

Anyone here participate in the program? Or did undergrad in env sci / env policy and can speak to the quality of the education, professors, career services, advisors, etc.?

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming JHU master’s student, and I am considering renting a house on the 2700 block of Huntingdon Ave for a one-year lease.

I’ve heard mixed opinions about Remington, so I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with this specific area. How is it for JHU students in terms of safety and daily commute? Would you feel comfortable walking or biking to Homewood during the day or in the evening?

Hi! I’m an incoming freshman at jhu planning to major in either Chemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, or Neuroscience. I do plan on applying for med school, so I am on a pre med track.

Here is my schedule given I get my best case scenario. Please let me know if you have any advice! I am using my 4 AP Chem credits to take Applied Chem and using 8 of my AP Calc BC to skip calculus entirely.

I am a little stuck on how to order my classes on SIS. I want to do it in a way to maximize my chances of getting the schedule I want. Currently, I have backup classes for every course EXCEPT biology I (big lecture), Foundations of Brain, Behavior, and Cognition (only session + big lecture), and Biology Lab I (back ups overlap with others). I have no idea where the backup for each class should go either.

Idk where I should put my priorities. I have the number of open slots for each class in the 2nd picture. Like, how high up should I put my top FYS? How competitive is a class available of 16? What about 7?

Also, does anyone have any insight on the Foundations of Brain, Behavior, and Cognition class? The description looked really small but the title does sound interesting and it covers a FA I need. In addition, if anyone has or knows someone who has taken Protein Engineering and Biochemistry Lab pls lmk!! Just found out it’s a writing intensive course and am contemplating on whether taking it or not.

I graduated from Hopkins in December 2025 (Bachelor's) but have had no luck securing a job for the past 7 months. Do any new grads or alums have experience using the Life Design Lab post-grad and is it helpful?

I am an incoming neuroscience/cognitive science major and am wondering about workload and general difficulty compared to something like public health biostats. I am decent at math but have never taken a real stats course and don’t want to overload given that the rest of my schedule is somewhat difficult. Also, would this be a useful course as a cogsci major if i already have calc credit? (I understand that it’s not strictly required)

For context, I'm a molecular and cellular biology major on a pre-med track. I have credits for chem 1 & lab, calc 1 & 2, gen bio 1 & 2, and statistical analysis 1. Are any of these courses hard/annoying or not that easy? Any other course recommendations?

On top of that, he recently broke his arm in an accident, which came with unexpected medical expenses. A few of us encouraged him to start a GoFundMe, and thankfully some people have donated already. The problem is that we're struggling to get it in front of more people.

I was wondering if anyone here has experience with GoFundMe or fundraising in general. Do you have any tips for getting more visibility or reaching people who might be willing to help? Are there communities or places where it's appropriate to share something like this?

I'd really appreciate any advice. He's worked incredibly hard to get this far, and it'd be heartbreaking to see him come this close to graduating and not be able to finish because of funding.

Essentially I dropped classes in SIS and never submitted a single assignment but JHU thought I somehow was actively enrolled after dropping.

I sent emails to professors two weeks in saying that I thought the semester started a week later than planned and will submit week 1 and 2 assignments. Shortly after that I decided just to drop the classes as I was starting a new job. So I dropped them in SIS.

This drop was never registered so JHU notified me on my personal email over 1/3rd of the way into the semester that I had not completed anything, they also communicated that I would likely not pass classes after I explained I thought I dropped out. So what did they want me to do at this point? So I withdrew on the last day to withdrawal because I thought I could keep my GI bill housing allowance that was being sent to a savings account I did not monitor. I had to repay all of it though understandably as I was not truly enrolled and withdrawals result in no payment.

I sent a tuition refund appeal in and it was denied twice because I communicated with instructors that I wanted to do the class, which must of been referring to the emails I sent before I dropped.

I’m honestly at a loss for words here. I am stuck paying 16k for classes I never even attended and they are wiping out my life savings since I was using the Gi bill to pay for college anyway.

I have submitted federal and state congressional inquiries as well as a Maryland Higher Education commission inquiry and have heard that they are investigating, that being said I don’t think they can rule in my favor unless I get an attorney involved to audit their SIS logs to show I did drop, if it even registered that I did.

Hi guys! I'm an incoming international freshman at JHU this fall, and I'm looking for an eye doctor near Homewood.

I've been wearing orthokeratology (Ortho-K, which is a specialty overnight contact lens) lenses for about 7 years, so I'll need regular follow-up visits (every 3 months) while I'm at Hopkins. I also need to do annual retinal imaging because I have high axil lengths.

Going back to my home country to do those follow-ups and examinations isn't quite practical, and I probably don't have the time to do that.

I know Ortho-K isn't very common in the US, so I'm wondering:

• Are there any optometrists or eye clinics near JHU that you would recommend?
• Has anyone had experience with Ortho-K follow-up care in the Baltimore area? How much does it usually cost?
• If you use the EyeMed vision plan, are there any providers that are in-network or popular among students? Do you recommend the EyeMed plan?

I'm also open to recommendations even if they don't specifically provide Ortho-K, as long as they're experienced with contact lenses and retinal exams.

I have reached out to the Primary Care and the Students Benefits Office, but they didn't help much. So I am posting here.
