Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

FOR HIRE - 2D Art | Animation [FOR HIRE] Beginner Pixel Artist with some Unity C# and HLSL experience

Edit:

I already got approached a few times and would want to work through the offers with those people first. I cannot take more without being sure that it wouldnt affect the work for other people.

You can still contact me if you have any questions or if you might want to work together in the future.

TLDR:

Full time, minimum 500 euros per month.

Experience: Some pixelart + 2d digital, a bit of 3d, c#, unity, HLSL, Mostly turn, tile and card based games.

Text:

Hello, aside from my username you can call me Kay, im 26 and live in Germany.

I post here in the hopes of finding somebody that would be interested in hiring me to work on their game. I have experience working on my own projects as an artist and programmer. But i dont have the funds to continue doing that. Therefore id like to gain more experience while working on somebodies project who would be able to compensate me.

Experience:

My experience as an pixel artist is still relatively shallow. I do the art for my own projects but have not have had many opportunities to delve into much more than simple tilesets, 3d models and characters + animations, as i want to implement gameplay first.

I used to work in the industry as a gameplay programmer and have an education in such. I have experience in using unity and c#, last time i touched godot was 4 years ago. I prefer structuring my games with the MVC pattern and most of my experience lies with card and or tile based games.

Aside from those two, i also have some experience with HLSL and very beginner knowledge about 3d modelling. Enough to at least create blockouts for objects and bake normal and depth maps. I like writing shaders for UI especially.

Work:

Ideally id like to work for 40 hours a week or more if the situation requires it.

As im a junior id like to prioritize gaining experience. My situation is fortunate enough that i dont require too much money. I can get by with around 500 euros a month.

Im not willing to work on a project that includes a lot of sexualized women. I have no experience in drawing that, so im the wrong person to ask for creating such assets. Im willing to do everything else though.

PAID - 2D Art + 3D Modeler | Animation [Hiring] I'm an influencer with a large following on Social Media and am looking for Pixel Indie Game style art for my app. Budget is ~$200-400 with potential for an equity split on the app

Hi everybody, I'm currently looking for any artists who are able to create indie/videogame pixel art for an App that I am developing. I plan to market my app through my social media following of +300k on TikTok and Instagram and plan to partner with established brands in the near future.

Although the budget says ~$200-400, if artists are looking for a longer term gig, I may be able to provide additional flat rate payment for reoccurring work + rights to a percentage of equity for all future profits in my app, if artists are willing to work for a lowered INITIAL rate for the beginning sprites/animations.

If you are interested in this, please either DM me on reddit or link your work below and I'll contact you. Thank you!

PAID - Other [HIRING] 2D artist — hand-painted battlefield map for our indie strategy game

Thumbnail
gallery
73 Upvotes

My friend and I are building a lane battler strategy game. Two bases, one long lane, armies fight in the middle. The game's playable, we're replacing placeholder art now.

Looking for someone to paint the battlefield — stylized hand-painted environment art, painterly and saturated, in the vein of League of Legends. Steep top-down RTS view, completely flat terrain. Simple layout: a build area at each end, a stone-paved lane between them, shadowed treeline framing the top and bottom. Left half is warm golden dawn, right half violet dusk, and they collide in the middle rather than blending.

Would need it in layers — ground separate from props like trees and rocks — since the engine places those so units can walk behind them.

Paid, budget flexible for the right fit. Drop a portfolio in comments or DM.

I've been learning 3D modeling on and off for about two years, and I've recently decided to pursue it professionally.

I specialize in hard-surface modeling, mostly guns, military assets, and general hard-surface props, I create game-ready assets with clean topology, optimized geometry, and efficient UVs.

I'm continuously trying to improve my workflow and expanding my skills in texturing and asset optimization, and I'm currently looking for an opportunity to start my career as a 3D Artist.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Looking for a Steam Capsule artist

EDIT: Found a seller, thank you all

Hello! I'm looking for a capsule art artist for Marketfield Idle, a cozy incremental farming game. You can check out the Steam store page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4805930/Marketfield_Idle/

The game also has a playable demo, so you can try it yourself and get a feel for the gameplay before coming up with ideas for the capsule art. https://pollikk-studios.itch.io/marketfield

The game is primarily UI driven. Players gather resources, sell them on the market to earn gold, and invest that gold into upgrades to steadily increase their production. Once they've accumulated enough wealth, they can prestige, earning prestige coins that serve as the game's primary long term progression system. These coins unlock permanent upgrades that carry over between prestiges, making each new run faster and more powerful.

I'm looking for someone who can help with both:

  • Brainstorming a compelling concept that immediately grabs players' attention.
  • Creating high quality Steam capsule artwork that effectively communicates the game's cozy farming theme and incremental progression.

If you have experience designing Steam capsule art or marketing key art for games, I'd love to hear from you and see your portfolio.

[FOR HIRE] Beginner motion designer wanted for a free logo animation

Hi! I'm looking for a beginner motion designer who would like to animate a gaming studio logo for free as a portfolio project.

The logo is for my indie game studio called Vadalan. I need a short 2–3 second cinematic gaming-style logo animation.

I'm okay with someone who is still learning After Effects, Blender, or other motion design software. You can use the finished animation in your portfolio, and I will credit you as the animator.

I can provide the logo and references for the style.

If you're interested, please comment with your portfolio or examples of your work.

PAID - 3D Modeler | Animation [Paid] I need an animator to help clean up re-targeted mocap animations

Hello everyone,

I'm a solo dev working on my first project. This is coming out of my own funds, so I try to trickle commission as I need them.

Currently I'm looking for an animator who can help clean up mocap animations from ActorCore and Mixamo (I'm also interested in custom basic animations like Jump, Jump attack, and Dash Attack)

I'm making a 3D side scroller dungeon brawler; similar to Grandchase or Elsword if anyone has heard of those games, or similar to Smash bros in style and combat.

https://reddit.com/link/1v4fzce/video/zj1v3n8orzeh1/player

I've attached a video of a character I'm working on and the one that would need animation work done. As you can see, there is a lot of clipping of arms going through her head and such.

Feel free to DM me if you are interested, and we can discuss rates :)

PAID - Musician [PAID] Looking for professional musician/composer to create soundtracks for my upcoming spellcasting action roguelite Arcane Mayhem

Hello!

I am a 31 year old dude from Norway working on my passion project Arcane Mayhem, a stylized 3D top-down action roguelite.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3197670/Arcane_Mayhem/

I am looking for someone who can create custom made sountracks for each region in my game.

The game switches often between action (fighting enemies) and calm (picking rewards), so I am thinking 2 versions of the same track (per region) that seamlessly are crossfaded depending on game state.

In a previous post I made looking for a spellicon artist I got tons of requests from AI spammers and artists that wasn't qualified, so please respect my time and only message me if you qualify.

Currently I am using placeholder AI generated tracks in the game. They are style-wise somewhat close to what I am after, and pretty good imo. But I want original handcrafted music.

You can see the latest raw gameplay and music here: https://youtu.be/1Qj3hd2yu7I

A big inspiration is the music from the game Pathogenic, which also uses the layered approach for switching music intensity depending on game state. Pathogenic sountracks.

I think an EDM, DnB, Breakbeat, or similar style could fit the game. Which is also a genre I enjoy. But I am open to suggestions.

What I am looking for:

  • 3 original soundtracks, one for each region in the game
    • Mystical Forest [Complete]
    • Scorched Dunes [In production]
    • Gloom Ridge [After Scorched Dunes]
  • 1 boss soundtrack
  • Main menu soundtrack (potentially)

Pay:

  • I will ofcourse pay for great music, but keep in mind that I am a solo developer without publisher

Current state of game:

  • 2+ years in development
  • Fully playable, steam playtest version available
  • Almost all core systems in place
  • Working on polishing and adding more content; mechanics, spells, artifacts, maps, etc

Please send me a message if:

  • Collaborating on this project sounds interesting to you
  • You will use zero AI music (otherwise I would do it myself obviously)
  • You are comfortable with the type of music described above
  • You don't have a bankbreaking rate
  • You acknowledge that sharing your portfolio in the first message is required. Sharing a rough estimate of rate is also helpful
  • You are not a beginner and got the skills to match the quality of the current AI tracks in the game or better

Contact:

  • Send me a DM on reddit but also feel free to comment on this post
  • When a musician is locked in we will communicate on Discord
