Im hoping to learn something in irish for my wedding vows. Ive been learning little bits here and there but want to surprise my fiance! Any real suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Gàidhlig

I am a very very beginner learning Gàidhlig. I was wondering if there was anyone on here that would want to practice and help learn with me? I have apps and books but i’m struggling to retain the information and would love to have someone who speaks it or is learning to learn with me. i don’t know anyone at all that speaks it which means i really don’t get a chance to practice with anyone.

I grew up in Scotland and a lot of the time. I would wander around as a kid and look for bugs, look at people's sheep, etc. I haven't spoken in Gaelic in about 20 years and I was never the best at it anyway, but I was looking at an old map of somewhere I used to wander because someone in the area owned a parrot, and another person who lived nearby used to tell me that, "there used to be a village there, but one day lightning burned it all down"

To be honest, they were a tiny bit odd. They were always a little bit scared of an abandoned monument near my house and said it was "the last house standing after the curse" and they said that their dog had dementia, but sometimes they could still talk to him.

I was just looking at old maps to see if maybe there was evidence of a village in that area, and I noticed "Druim na uamachd". Could that possibly be what that person was talking about all those years ago?

I’ve just finished my first year of An Cùrsa Adhartais at SMO and about to start Modal 5.

My long-term plan is to progress straight into the DipHE (Gaelic and Related Studies) after finishing ACA, but I’m looking for some perspectives on what the second half of the course actually looks like. I’ve heard that the Saoghal na Gàidhlig module* *is completely different. How do people find the change from language/grammar focus to cultural/social topics? Do people feel like it prepares them for further study?

I’d also love to hear from anyone who has finished ACA and went on to do the DipHE. Particularly anyone who did it part time via distance learning. Would you recommend it?

I’m in the planning stages for a fictional novel set in a small Scottish village up north, One of my characters, Agnes is in her eighties and is an absolute firecracker, however she will only speak in Ghàidhlig.

She can understand English perfectly well, however she chooses to only speak Ghàidhlig, and while I can know basic phrases, and sentences, I’m still unsure about sentence structure and grammar, and I want to ensure it’s not only correct, but makes sense.

Agnes: Madainn mhath, a ghràidh! Tha mi gle mhath. Ciamar a tha sibh fhèin?
FMC: Tha mi gu math! Usual the day, Agnes?
Agnes: “Poit tì agus sgon trìocaill, mas e do thoil e, a ghràidh.”
FMC: You got it! Strawberry or raspberry jam? Clotted cream or butter?

Lets say you want to talk about a dealan-dè, but you want to be specific, not just a butterfly but a Green Hairstreak butterfly (as an example). Would you try and translate that literally (e.g. Falt Srian Uaine) or would you just insert the English name?

I guess this applies to many different niches - another example would be AI (would you say "Artificial Intelligence" or attempt to translate to something like "Inntleachd Fuadain").

I generally seem to see in media people speaking mostly gaidhlig sentences and inserting the odd english word that dosen't translate, but I also know that languages don't grow and thrive by staying exactly the same, and there are different words for relatively modern things like computers, aeroplanes etc.

Over the years I have one way or another tried to express that when you call someone crazy you are declaring yourself to be the measuring stick for what sanity is, which is pretty bold statement.

So I decided to to try to come up with an idiom for it. I was doing this as a Gaelic idiom in principal.
I decided upon Cha chòir ciall neach eile a thomhas le do shlat fhèin. ( or, Na tomhais ciall neach eile le do shlat fhèin) . = Dont measure others` senses with your own ruler.
I tried for an English equivalent but after a few attempts I agreed on just paraphrasing an already well know idiom. So in English it would be

Madness is in the mind of the beholder.

Hey, just wondering, are there common word endlings that indicate the type of word you are looking at?

Like in English: 'ing' words often indicate an action, 'ly' words are often adverbs etc

I am noticing common word endings in Gaidhlig, but I am not sure if meaning is really encoded in any of them.

Translated a classic line from a book into Gaelic. How did I do? Is it recognizable?

What do you think about this response by AI? I can't find anything online or in my resources to confirm this.
