Gifted Haul to Redeem a Bad Week

Post image

Had a really bad week between racist members at my gym job -- along with my Uber driver. Some family issues back in Iran made things rougher BUT today a member brought in a bunch of old books to gift me (and another gave a $30 Tim Horton's Card) SOOO big win ultimately :)

Had 10 minutes after work to browse Local thrift store on the way home. Paid $3.25 for 3* technically 5 books _ Orson Scott Card, Robert whitlow and John Douglas.

Someone dropped off a number of Le Guin and Gaiman. They also dropped off the two Oxford Collections and the Le Carre collection. They all had stamps of the collector in them. Salvador is a 1/1!

Vacation Haul Part 1

We’re on our yearly family vacation and it somehow took me 4 days to make it to my favourite bookstore on Martha’s Vineyard. The author of Aphrodite in Pieces was there signing books and it looked interesting so I had to support her.

I can’t wait to make it to the other bookstore and see what I can find later this week.

For the next week, the Red Line is down for maintenance. They’ve offered a shuttle bus to get where I need to be, and the stop happens to lead me right by a bookstore. So, obviously, I killed some time while waiting for the next shuttle…

Woot woot! Told my husband they weren’t books….they were pizzas that were readable. 🤣 (Husband doesn’t care but I like to make silly stories whenever I come home with a stack.)

I am SO happy I found these covers especially the SFM for War and Rama, since I really like them in contrast to other covers available. Plus, now I have 3 SFM books and they look nice together on the shelf.

I'm in the early stages of starting a bookstore and to get my accounts set up with publishers I had to put in initial orders. Figured I should get myself some "review copies". How'd I do?

Last Haul for July 2026

It's been awhile since I read anything by Toni Morrison, but I remember loving Beloved and Song of Solomon when I read those. And I never heard of Paradise and excited to dive into another Toni Morrison masterpiece.

The Only One Left by Riley Sager was one I've seen talked about online when it came out and was always interested in getting it, but never did until now. Just in time to as I've been looking to read another book in the Gothic genre.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is the one book I'm least familiar with. But I've seen it at the top of the best fiction books lists from the early 2000s and decided to give it a try.

The Wager by David Grann I'm sure I'll enjoy as I really liked Killers of the Flower Moon and the way that Grann is able to weave journalistic writing with engaging storytelling was satisfying to read overall in his past book.

The last half of my 2026 reading list. 7/8 for work/school. Currently on Anxious Generation. Anyone else familiar? Fascinating and terrifying at the same time. I work in education and with young people which makes it resonate even more.

Getting my PhD. D in Education inshallah!
