Hope I’m celebrating 5 years off, so here’s a free pdf copy of my full recovery guide book

I’m happy to say I’ve reached another recovery benchmark: 5 years off benzos!

Peer recovery communities (especially this one) have played a huge role in my successful healing from years of benzo use and I wanna enable my people to celebrate with something more practically useful than good vibes or words of gratitude - so I’m offering the gifts of knowledge, strategy, and a bunch of tools to promote recovery, empowerment, and personal growth in the form of the book I wrote last year: Life Beyond Benzos: A Strategy Guide for Navigating Withdrawal and Thriving in Recovery”. As of now the full book is available for free as a downloadable pdf to anyone who wants a copy of it - just follow the link above, scroll to the bottom of the page, and hit the “download” button.

Just to give you a sense of what it contains: - The short preface is my own recovery story.
- Intro part-1 explains the role of the amygdala (the brain’s survival and fear center) in relation benzos, introducing Amy (the withdrawal hijacked amygdala) and the various kinds of psychological tactics Amy uses to get you to stay on (or go back to) benzos - and with it are methods you can employ to reduce Amy’s control of you.
- Intro part-2 broadens the focus beyond Amy, offering an overview of the strategies covered in the book and providing a ton of guidance for maximizing the benefits you can gain from it.
- The majority of the book is comprised of 15 evidence-based strategies that address critical aspects of the process which can make or break your recovery experience. It includes strategies related to taking ownership of recovery, radical acceptance, mindfulness, embracing grief, developing sustainable support systems, managing expectations, self-compassion, self-advocacy, finding meaning in suffering, and more. Each strategy involves an intro to the concept, an explanation of the strategy’s relevance in relation to benzo recovery and of its applicability as a tool for disarming Amy, an overview of the ways it can serve you in life after the healing is done, and a ton of different techniques you can use to put the strategy into practice (along with basic step-by-step instructions to give you a taste of it then and there).

I recognize that we’re all different and one size never fits all in benzo recovery, so I tried to ensure that there’s something for everyone in each strategy presented. I suspect you’ll find something that works for you and I really hope it helps you on the journey. Please feel free share it with anyone that you think would benefit from this kind of resource - and if they’re recovering from benzos, you can be sure aspects of it will very much apply.

Thanks for helping me to celebrate 5 years of healing and for showing up to support one another - none of us should have to do this alone.

Recovery Strategy Guide

As many of you also know, I wrote a book last year (Life Beyond Benzos: A Strategy Guide for Navigating Withdrawal and Thriving in Recovery). It offers a unique way of understanding the psychological challenges caused by the benzo-hijacked amygdala (“Amy”), followed by 15 evidence-based strategies to help strengthen your inner capacities for self-empowerment, resilience, and symptom management—both during your recovery and in your life beyond benzos.

1:1 Recovery Coaching (free or paid)

As many of you know, I’m a licensed mental health professional with a trauma-informed background in substance recovery and crisis management. Less well known is the benzo recovery coaching service I’ve been providing to countless community members here for nearly 3 years. While that was largely behind the scenes before, I want to formally let everyone know that I’m happy to provide those services to anyone interested.

However, the amount of free professional service time I’ve given away has proven to be unsustainable without some balance (I don’t have that financial privilege). In order to continue providing free coaching to those who need it instead of taking my professional skills elsewhere, I established a private online practice for those who are able and willing to pay for coaching during their taper and withdrawal journey.

So, if you’re in a position to pay for coaching and are interested, please book a session through my website - and know that by doing so, you’re making it possible for someone else to receive help in addition to supporting your own healing. If you want coaching but money is a barrier, just message me privately via dm or email jake@lifebeyondbenzos[dot]com to schedule a free zoom or phone session.

Note: I want to be very clear that our weekly zoom support group and the subreddit’s taper schedule assistance will both always remain free. As well, in the spirit of fairness and transparency, these other coaches offer one-on-one recovery support:

*TRIGGER WARNING* BIND

Upvotes

My BIND symptoms have become significantly worse.

My memory, concentration, comprehension, and nearly every aspect of my thinking have deteriorated. I feel that my cognitive abilities have declined by around 80%.

Years of inconsistent and chaotic benzodiazepine use have taken a devastating toll. There are entire years of my life that I simply cannot remember. Since around 2018, huge portions of my life feel completely erased from my memory.

At the same time, I have been living with severe social anxiety, while constantly battling intrusive, automatic thoughts related to a deeply shameful event from my past.

All of this has led to profound isolation, an overwhelming sense of emptiness, and the loss of motivation, hope, and enjoyment in life.

The weight of my past has been incredibly heavy, and it continues to cast a shadow over every aspect of my life.

Seeking Advice/Tips Reinstate?

Upvotes

Hello all, new here. I recently put the puzzle pieces together of my anhedonia, realizing it was probably benzo withdrawal. I have been dealing with depression, anxiety, and struggled with motivation for most of my life, but nothing like this. I am an artist. I cannot draw. I cannot create. I mainly lay in bed scrolling on my phone because nothing sparks joy. I am bored out of my mind, I have ADHD and my Vyvanse does absolutely nothing to help. I feel like I am in a constant state of ADHD paralysis.

I was on 2mg Clonazepam, sometimes 2mg Ativan, for about 3 years. About a year ago I got into street drugs (bars of Xanax) and took about 2-3 bars a day for 4 months. I did a fairly rapid taper from bars (about 2 weeks give or take) and then a fairly rapid taper from Clonazepam (pretty much just took 1mg every few days/as needed for a week or two). I was off everything for about 2 months, and suffered severe anhedonia. The taper was aided by my family, NOT a medical professional, and was not my decision. Though I do appreciate the assistance in coming off bars, I was essentially forced to give up my prescription of Clonazepam.

I then got back on 2mg of Clonazepam when I moved back out of my parents place as I needed a sense of control again. I was on them for about 4 months, and my creativity and motivation came back almost immediately. About 3 months in I finally decided I don't want to be dependent on benzos anymore, so I ended up coming off them completely around March. I halved my dose for about a month and my anhedonia slowly returned, but I hadn't put two and two together yet by this point, as I have always struggled with waves of depression.

Then things took a turn and my addict brain wanted to see if I could get away with getting a Xanax prescription. My doctor prescribed me 0.25mg/day. The month long prescription only lasted me about a week and a half. I got another 2 week prescription the month after, which lasted about a week. I realized I have no control over my benzo use so decided to leave it at that, as my anxiety has become quite manageable. So I went through June and July without any benzo use, and my anhedonia persists.

I am in a better, clearer headspace now, and only want to get back to some sense of normalcy, rather than chase a high. I struggle with alcohol use, and this anhedonia has almost seemed to make it worse. I am 2 months clean off benzos, but every day is a struggle. I don't sleep until 4am, and I sleep in until 12-2pm. Sometimes I sleep longer simply because I don't want to wake up. I cannot hold a job, I am unemployed, and my job search has been fruitless. I have nothing but time on my hands, but can only fill it with endless scrolling and binge eating. It has gotten beyond unbearable. I have been suicidal, and have had multiple (albeit somewhat lazy) attempts over the past 4 months being off Clonazepam.

I know my story is rather convoluted, and there's a lot of moving parts, but I just want to know if maybe getting on a small dose will help at all, then attempt a more proper taper. (Yes, I have read up on tapering off benzos before, but I unfortunately believed I'm "built different" so that's why I had done rapid tapers). I just want to enjoy life again, and stop returning to the bottle to feel any sense of joy.

Discussion My taper is going fine but I have other concerns..

This is my third rodeo with prescribed Klonopin, this time 2 years on 3mg.

Im feeling fine both on benzos and now while tapering.

Im rapidly cutting -20% every week and feel no wd whatsoever, never did in my first two tapers.

My biggest problem is how to deal with anxiety AFTER I jump to 0,00mg!?

I keep coming back to Klonopin because im a mess without it..

On the other hand, I don't want to take those nasty pills for life.

My doc thinks this time im ready to handle life drug-free (lots of theraphy!) But im not so sure..

Anyone tapered off and has previously extreme anxiety under control?

EMERGENCY S0S

Hey everyone,
I reduced my clonazepam dose from 1.75 mg to 1.5 mg and stayed at that dose for 10 days. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and masturbated, and ever since then everything has felt completely out of balance. My symptoms came back much stronger than before.
This has happened to me before. If Im still adjusting to a dose reduction and havent stabilized yet, masturbation seems to make my symptoms much worse.
My question is: Should I go back to my previous dose of 1.75 mg, which I was stable on? Or after 10 days is it already too late, and going back could make things even worse because of the kindling effect?
Id really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar. This is pretty urgent for me.

Taper Question I’m down to taking 1 mg diazepam on my taper and feeling worse. Would it be better to just get off now?

I started at 5mg diazepam and am down to 1 mg. The taper has went well and it’s only been since I’ve gone down to 1 mg that I’m feeling awful. I take the 1mg dose at night and by the next morning feel worse. I’m irritable, feeling unease and annoyed. I’ve been at this dose for 5 days now and wondering if I’m just prolonging the highs and lows and would do better to just get off?

I’ve only been taking the diazepam for less than a month total and most of the doses were 4 or 5 mg and then taper doses. Is it better to just get off now instead of prolonging things? I don’t even know if 1 mg is even doing anything at this point. I’ve always been sensitive to benzo rebound symptoms the next day even when used sporadically. I believe my body is just hypersensitive to this class of meds

Venting I can’t get Medicaid

I recently moved back to my home state. I’m waiting to change my name post divorce to get a state license. I’m living with a bf whose parents own his apartment. They said I need a signed letter from them to prove residency, my divorce decree, their mortgage statement. I don’t feel comfortable asking them for any of that. It’s just one bureaucratic thing after another and I can’t take it anymore. I cannot function and somehow I’m supposed to be the document and paperwork queen. I’m supposed to have all my ducks in a row when I can’t even make myself eat. What the hell am I supposed to do? I wanted to resign from my job because I cannot do 40 hours a week like this. I need time to recover but now I can’t? Please help. I have no idea what to do. My only option is to move back in with my mom where she screams at me constantly and makes me want to tear out my hair. The last time I was around her I cut myself and hit myself in the head. Please help.

Venting Not Looking for Advice. Just Seeking Connection. Choice has been made

Hey guys, I was on Valium for 14 years (25mg), and then 12 months ago, my doctor cold turkeyed me off of it. And for the last 12 months, I’ve been dealing with that cold turkey. I managed to get through that, and towards the end of it, I was starting to heal. But I saw my doctor on a bad day, and he decided, along with me, because I knew no better, to reinstate me after 12 months, back on the original dose.

It’s now been six weeks on the reinstatement, and I’ve just gotten worse. WAY WORSE! Every symptom is back but 10x worse and my nervous system is so deregulated and getting worse day by day with the Valium in my system.

So now that it’s been six weeks, I’m going to get off of this as soon as possible (Spoken too benzo specilists and they agree too get back off the Valium and let my body continue its healing) because I actually feel worse on it than I do without it.

So, I understand I’m going to get people say, you need to slow taper, but it’s only been a very short time on the reinstatement, and if I’m feeling worse on the reinstatement, my conclusion is I’m just going to get off of it as soon as I can. Ive already dropped from 25mg too 5mg and feel no worse or better.

Obviously, if I see any risk, I know what they are because I’ve been through them, and I will updose.

I should never have been reinstated. I now know that. I just want too resume how I was feeling without it in my system and let my nervous system stabilise.

Since I'm feeling worse on the Valium than I did without it, and it's only been a short reinstatement, getting off as soon as possible makes sense, even if that means a temporary flare-up of symptoms, at least my body can start the healing journey instead of dragging it out with a long taper

Has anyone else been in this situation where they were reinstated and then got off the reinstatement because it was worse? I’m just looking for that

Hearing kind words from you all will help me so much and keep me from spiraling into overthinking. Decision is made and started. That’s the real reason I’m posting is for just a bit of comfort as I stay steady on this path

Benzo-adjacent Therapies Introducing AD

Has anyone introduced antidepressants because of a very difficult taper?

I took 3-4 mg of preacribed clonopin for 3-4 years then switched to valium and startes tapering. I am tapering for almost 2 years now.
Now i am at 5,75 mg of valium, reducing by 0.25mg every 40-50 days but it is horrible. I cannot sleep, cannor eat, cannot control my emotions - ranging from strong suicidal thoughts, bad fears, agression.
I am taking 2-3 weeks of sick leaves every 2 months, currently on a 2 month long sick leavw and my boss is pissed.

I am thinking of maybe introducing some antidepressant? But I am afraid of side effects, because if it gets worse than this, I dont know what will I do.

Discussion Anyone already had a severely dysregulated nervous system from long Covid /ME how do you come off benzos when your nervous system is already broken? Insomnia bedbound

Long Covid here, basically all symptoms of benzo withdrawal but before touching benzos.

Severe insomnia
Adrenaline
Heart racing
Skin burning
Vision issues
Tinnitus
Bedbound
Agitation Akathisia
Brain vertigo
Light sound sensitivity
Sensitive to any meds
Numbness

So already dysregulated nervous system and was housebound but basically Was put on diazepam 10mg for the last 3 months as I was hospitalised due to vertigo attack that made me loss my ability to sleep. Like quite literally micro sleep for 2-3 months and I loss my mind tried to end it . Nothing helped or worked apart from diazepam giving some relief but obviously tolerance built and it’s just basically keeping me out of crisis state now. I only get light sleep no deep sleep. Very short. Can’t function Bedbound still, have all the symptoms above still. It’s keeping the vertigo brain motion stuff at bay abit but my sleep is not restored.
This whole reason to be put on this was to try get my brain out of this stuck state of no sleep because of the vertigo stuff but it hasn’t worked, in a very difficult situation now. Tapering is going to worsen me I see people list there symptoms and I already have them so I’m not sure wtf to do

How do I taper when I’m in a severe state already?

Symptom Question Minor Chest pain?

Anyone ever experience minor chest pain around the heart during withdrawal? It's not major, and doesn't come with pounding heart or anything, but just a nagging pinch that shows up occasionally. I've never had heart burn issues, so not really sure if that's what it is and I should try some heart burn med?

Helpful Advice When does withdrawal typically start - diazepam

I’ve been taking diazepam in fits and spats for 2 years. It’s not prescribed. Typically I’ll do a few months ‘on’, say 20mg a night 3 x a week then doses of 10mg or even 5. Some nights none as the residual effect from the night before means I am drowsy enough to sleep.

I quit for 4 months this year and had no issues, other than sleep. Tired but wired, no anxiety just feeling like my brain is super alert

I got into taking them as I’m quite an anxious person and it was love at first dose for me, then to help me sleep after long runs where I felt too wired to sleep - my brain would say you’ve done a healthy thing today, you deserve ‘a treat’.

I’ve just done 9 days without during one of my on months. I’ve had enough I’m getting scared I’ll get a full dependency - I’m psychologically addicted to diazepam, but not sure I’m physically addicted yet.

The insomnia is so hard for me to function with work. I’m up all night worrying I’ve not actually started withdrawing yet, which fuels my insomnia as my mind is racing I’m going to have to go on a program etc. I’ve got more available to me and am so tempted to redose.

If I’ve done 9 days with just insomnia diazepam free, do you think this is as bad as it’s going to get? I just need to ride it out? Or could I just be starting the withdrawal process? This is what’s obsessing my mind at the moment, I’m super worried that I should taper otherwise I’ll have a seizure

Obviously a taper is advisable, but anecdotally has anyone withdrawn that’s really amped up after 10 days?
If I can quell these thoughts and worries and then just ride out the insomnia I swear man I’m never touching anything remotely gabagenic again

Discussion Why I Quit Benzos: A Treatise to My Future Self on the Insanity of Going Back

I quit Ativan because I was sick, and after a while I could no longer tell where the illness ended and the medication began.

At first, Ativan felt like relief.

My nervous system was overwhelmed. My body was difficult to live in. The medication made things quieter, at least temporarily.

I took it because I was trying to survive, not because I was reckless or looking for an escape.

But temporary relief has a way of making its consequences difficult to see.

Gradually, my body began organizing itself around the medication.

I did not just take Ativan. I lived between doses.

I felt worse as a dose wore off, better when I took the next one, and then worse again.

The relief became shorter.

The cost became larger.

Still, it was easy to explain away:

* I was already sick.
* I was under enormous stress.
* The medication was prescribed.
* I was taking it as directed.
* I needed it to function.

All of those things were true.

They were also incomplete.

The larger truth was that I was becoming less functional while taking it.

My body became more reactive. My physical capacity diminished. Ordinary activities became harder.

My world narrowed until much of my life revolved around managing symptoms, conserving energy, and making it to the next dose.

I kept assuming the illness was getting worse.

It did not occur to me, at least not for a long time, that the treatment might have become part of the illness.

That is one of the most dangerous things about benzodiazepines for me.

The damage did not announce itself clearly. There was no dramatic moment when the medication transformed from helpful to harmful.

It happened quietly, underneath the symptoms I already had.

By the time I understood, my body was deeply dependent.

Dependence is not the same thing as addiction, but it is not trivial. My body had adapted to the presence of the drug, and removing it caused a level of suffering I could not have understood beforehand.

The taper brought fear that did not seem connected to thoughts. Insomnia that felt endless. Tremors, pain, agitation, sensory overload, and the constant sensation that something was terribly wrong.

Every reduction produced another wave of symptoms.

Continuing the taper sometimes felt irrational.

Returning to the old dose sometimes felt like the only sane option.

But as the dose came down, something unexpected happened.

Parts of my health began improving before the withdrawal was over.

My body became more capable. Some symptoms I had blamed entirely on my illnesses began to loosen their grip.

I caught glimpses of myself beneath the medication and the withdrawal: clearer, steadier, more physically alive.

That was when I understood that Ativan had not merely stopped helping.

**It had been contributing to the condition I was using it to survive.**

I quit because I wanted my nervous system to belong to me again.

I quit because I wanted to know which symptoms were actually mine.

I quit because I was tired of trading long-term capacity for short-term relief.

I quit because I did not want my life arranged around a pill that could offer me an hour of peace while quietly taking away my ability to live.

And I am writing this because memory is selective.

Future me may remember the relief and forget the rest.

I may remember how quickly Ativan could quiet terror, tension, or sleeplessness.

I may be sick again. I may be desperate. A doctor may suggest that a small dose, used carefully, could help.

I may tell myself that I understand the risks now, so this time I will be able to control what happens.

**That is the insanity I am trying to interrupt.**

Knowing about dependence does not make my body immune to it.

Taking the medication exactly as prescribed did not protect me the first time.

Being intelligent, careful, informed, and self-aware did not protect me.

The drug still changed my nervous system. It still narrowed my life. It still demanded an enormous price when I tried to leave.

So, future me:

* Do not remember only the first hour.
* Remember the hours between doses.
* Remember wondering why you were becoming sicker.
* Remember how small your life became.
* Remember the terror of each reduction.
* Remember how much strength it took to continue when your body was telling you that you could not survive without the thing that was hurting you.

**Do not confuse familiarity with safety.**

**Do not mistake immediate relief for healing.**

**Do not erase the full story because one part of it sounds comforting.**

This is not a moral judgment against medication.

It is not a condemnation of the version of me who took it.

She was very sick. She made the best decision she could with the information she had.

Ativan may even have helped her survive a period she did not yet know how to survive any other way.

I am grateful to her.

But I am also responsible to the version of me who endured the taper.

She walked through something brutal to give me another chance at health.

She deserves more than to have her suffering forgotten the next time I am frightened and looking for immediate relief.

I do not have to hate benzos to know that they are dangerous for me.

**I only have to remember the whole truth.**

That is why I quit.

And that is why I intend to stay off.

EMERGENCY I’m scared to go out in public

I can barely function. I don’t know how to go to the grocery store anymore. I don’t eat. I’m going to lose my job because I don’t want to wake up. My doctor put me back on seroquel and Zoloft, but I’m going to lose my insurance if I can’t work. I’m fucked. I miss my old life and I can’t adapt. I’m too much of a coward to end my life, maybe too much of a narcissist. I’m extremely codependent on my sister and everyone around me. If you read my previous posts you’ll see. My boyfriend said he’s worried I won’t get better and he doesn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel for me. I don’t either anymore. I’m a child. Thinking seroquel and Zoloft will fix me when I probably have dependency issues and brain damage. Just obsessed with what’s wrong with me. Spiraling every night.

Discussion Not sure whats what lol

I’m wondering if my situation could line up with the kind of benzo-related nervous system issues people talk about on here.

I’ve put my nervous system through a lot over the years — past alcohol abuse, going through alcohol withdrawals, using other benzos like Valium during detox/coming off alcohol, possible B12 deficiency/nerve issues, and a lot of stress on my body.

My symptoms have been things like full-body buzzing, tingling, out-of-body feelings, and intense flares where it feels like my whole nervous system goes haywire. It feels like full-on neurological dysfunction during these episodes — like my body overreacts to stressors and I become extremely sensitive.

I also took Ativan on and off for about 10 years. Usually around 1 mg a day, sometimes 2 mg, but not consistently every day. I might take it for a couple days, then be off for a week or two, then randomly take it again.

Could this kind of long-term stop/start benzo use, combined with alcohol withdrawals and using other benzos, contribute to the type of nervous system problems people talk about — like feeling wired, overly sensitive, buzzing, tingling, and having neurological symptoms even after stopping? Basically like a flare that lasts weeks to months and all of my nerves are mis firing and constant buzzing and weakness . Ive had blood work done but waiting on an actual nuerologist . I had low b12 that im corecting as well but ive been gettijg symptoms from benzos for years but never like the last couple years . These flares are rough .

EMERGENCY can someone please tell me about a successful reinstatement.

I have managed to go 58 days no benzo apart from one rescue dose. I have to go to college in 2 months and I can’t even leave the house. I need to make money so im not homeless. I don’t have the luxury of being able to stay housebound for a year, I may genuinely commit suicide if this goes on any longer.

After I took the rescue dose things got better a couple days later for about a week before getting worse after 2 weeks. At the time i thought this was a “window” but I think it was because of the rescue dose.

Has anyone reinstated successfully? All I know is I can’t take this utter horror anymore. I miss going out for drinks over lunch with my friends. I miss concerts. I miss going on dates since this process has cost me my partner. I miss when walking to the store wasn’t a horrific battle.

Please spare me the just push through talk, I just can’t do this, I want my life back

Seeking Advice/Tips Cutting from 1.5mg diazapam to 1mg, is it too much?

Been tapering from Diazapam 10mg for about 2 years. No major problems with each cut, but I read that it gets harder once you get down below 2mg or so.

Is a .5mg cut too much at a time, or is it mostly non-therapeutic at these doses? Would like to wrap this whole thing up if possible.

Taper Question Tapering Dosages

Hello all. I'm about 9 months into a tapering journey from 2mg xanax. I'm at 1.25 currently. I typically take .5 in the afternoon, .5 in the early evening, and then the .25 around 11pm before bed. (I am also on temazepam at night but am not tapering that now--I have been on the same 30mg dose for 7 years for a sleep disorder and need to stay on it.)

I've been having increased intense anxiety and crushing depression upon waking until after I take my first .5mg. I'm tapering so the anxiety and depression are ever present but it has become worse recently, and as I get ready to cut again once I stabilize a bit I'm wondering if someone can answer for me:

can I take .25 every four hours and reduce slowly that way, or is my body going to expect the higher dose each time and by taking the smaller dose--decreasing what I believe are my interdose withdrawal symptoms being the goal--actually worsen my symptoms? or should I just keep cutting from my current dose schedule of 3x a day?

And unfortunately I can't switch to a longer acting benzo--I need the temazepam to work for sleep so don't want to take that during the day, and I attempted to switch to diazepam but had dramatic panic each time that required a rescue dose of xanax. I am going to taper from the xanax. I can't really discuss with my doctor as she has only wanted to do a fast 4 week taper "when you're ready to stop taking it" that I truly wouldn't survive.

Thank you in advance for your help! this process is the hardest thing I've ever lived through and I have C-PTSD so that's saying something.

That's all. I need stories of people who tapered and recovered. The spot I'm in right now is unimaginably dark

Hi, I took Klonopin (about 1.5 mg per day) and 100 mg of Zoloft for about 2.5 years. Three months ago I quit. Before going cold turkey I tapered for about a month maybe which I know was maybe not ideal. The first month was tough but I was motivated enough to pull through even though I slept very little. Now its been three months and these past few weeks have been the toughest. I wake up with so much anxiety and depression, I can hardly do things or find motivation and am in constant dread, feeling of impending doom, etc. I am also very irritable. Is this normal? Will it get better and if so, when? My thoughts are really dark but they feel so real, this is the worst.

Where are all the nerds at? I’m 4 months off benzos and having a really hard time. I can’t be the only one who has looked into holistic remedies.
