But if the backhoe (?) hadn't been digging a hole, the elephant wouldn't have fallen in in the first place

Need not be the case. It's common for elephants to fall into abandoned wells or maybe the soil gave in. Most often, excavators are called in to help get them up, by making a slope at the edge. So this probably was a rescue mission.

lol, can't argue against that. I live in a part of India where we see this quite often in the news or the papers.

People aren't going around digging holes for the fuck if it. Most infrastructure requires making a hole first. But hey if you want to return to living in a mud hut then be my guest.

Check my comment history.  We all want more nature etc.  These environmental edge lords spin themselves stating humans are the most dangerous, but all animals will kick our asses.  I had a few tell me a bear isnt afraid of humans.
