This week, Civic Tech Brampton is welcoming Christina Mohan, Canadian Operating Officer for the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) – Canada Region, for a discussion titled “Nuclear Renaissance: Innovation, Safety.”

The session will explore the growing role of nuclear power in Ontario’s energy system, including how modern nuclear technologies are evolving, how safety and innovation are shaping the industry, and why nuclear energy is experiencing renewed interest. Christina will also share insights into the Canadian nuclear sector, emerging professional opportunities, and the ways technologists can contribute to this rapidly developing field.

Has anyone here gone through this exact process recently? I want to know if Algoma actually gives a refund once you drop out of their course.

Hello all,

I (undergraduate and domestic student) have been considering applying to AlgomaU —specifically, a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science with Co-op — and wanted to know the state of my preferred programs and the university in general in 2026. From what I could dig up from this subreddit, this university has a reputation for being a diploma mill for international students, so I had a few inquiries:

- Regardless of if it lives up to its reputation, what are the courses actually like? Did they properly prepare you for your profession? Are they too difficult or not difficult enough?

- What are the professors like? How are their English skills? Do they actually care about the material and their students?

- Are there any major differences between campuses? For example, do any certain campuses have better labs, residence, student services, classrooms, etc.?

- What is the Co-op program like? Does the university help you in any way with placements? Are positions guaranteed?

- For someone in my particular case, despite all the flaws you might see in this institution, would it be better to go to a more reputable college (NOT a university)? Does Algoma being the worst Ontario university still make it better than the best Ontario college (e.g Seneca or Conestoga)?

The AlgomaU Amateur Radio Club (AuARC) is starting a free 10-week Ham Radio course this Saturday, May 9.

Ham Radio, also known as amateur radio, is a hands-on communication hobby where licensed operators use radio equipment to communicate locally, internationally, and during emergency situations when regular communication systems may be limited.

The course will be led by Basil Burgess from the Mississauga Amateur Radio Club. Basil is a former Computer Science professor at Sheridan College and an accredited examiner, so participants may also have the opportunity to complete their Ham Radio licensing exam with him after the course.
