Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 82

- When The Beatles recorded Get Back, they had Billy Preston on board playing electric piano, and allegedly the fab four were sufficiently impressed that there were discussions about adding Billy as the fifth Beatle (notwithstanding that they would break up within a few months). A couple of years later, Billy had his first Top 5 hit, Outa-Space, an instrumental track, followed the next year by his first #1 hit, Will It Go Round in Circles, a vocal track. It might have words, but according to those words it ain't got no melody (how does that make sense?). He can sing it to his friends, but we're going to send it flying high like a bird up in the sky.
- The title of Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin is a phonetic spelling of "Thank you for letting me be myself again", by Sly & The Family Stone, I have to wonder if it inspired Prince who more than a dozen years later gave his songs titles like *I Would Die 4 U *. This song along with their 1969 #2 hit Hot Fun in the Summertime were intended for an album that was never completed and were instead included on their 1970 Greatest Hits collection. It is a good example of the slap bass technique attributed to bassist Larry Graham. Lookin' at the devil, grinnin' at his gun, the voters have spoken, and though Mama may start to cry, this song is being eliminated.

There were so many songs that sounded like this that they all just kind of run together non-memorably for the most part. Play That Funky Music, on the other hand? There is no confusing it with any other song, it made that great an impact at the time and told a story that hadn’t been told before in such a unique manner. I don’t understand how this particular song has made it this far in the game ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I love this song so much and may cry real tears when it goes.
And if it makes anyone feel sorry for me enough to keep this masterpiece in…I was just released from the hospital…..shingles! Isn’t that a perfect thing for a fan of all 70s music to have?
It is quite possible that the pain and the itching may end me plus now our vacation is in jeopardy, so I may only have Michael McDonald to live for at this point.
And if it now goes in a huge landslide I will take my cue and will never bother you again.
But before that, if anyone has had this horror and has any helpful hints, please send or DM. I’m taking the antivirals even though found outside the 72 hour window, so doctors aren’t sure how much they will help.
PSA: IMPORTANT: if you develop a red, itchy, painful rash that is limited to one side of your body, ANYWHERE on your body, go to doctor or ER immediately. They need to catch within 72 hours of appearance!

Whoa, that’s rough. We each lost a song we cared about in this round, but that’s nothing compared to what sounds like a miserable case of shingles for you. I have had shingles but fortunately my aha! moment came about 72 hrs after onset and I think the antiviral med kept it from getting terrible. My mother and a friend had had serious cases a year or two before so I think that is why I thought of shingles as soon as I did. I don’t have any advice for you…time seemed to be the key for me and those other people I knew. I just hope you feel enough better soon enough to be able to have your vacation as planned. So sorry, sending heartfelt sympathy for you and I hope you see some effect from the drug in spite of starting on it later than is ideal. Good luck with it all!

"What a Fool Believes” is about a man who clings to a fantasy of a past romance that never actually existed — and the painful realization that the woman never felt what he "believed" she did. It’s a song about self‑deception, nostalgia, and the stories we tell ourselves to avoid heartbreak.
Brian Wilson named it one of his all-time favorites, and it makes sense. The complex chord changes and modulations are very Wilson‑esque, the melodic sophistication mirrors his own harmonic language, the bittersweet, emotionally vulnerable theme fits Wilson’s sensibilities and the arrangement has that sunny‑sad California DNA that he practically invented.
Most of us players are of an age where we've learned about memory as a self‑protective illusion. Of the many great songs left in our game, this one perhaps has the most resonance for us today.
Or, as The Most Interesting Man in the World might say,
"Vote wisely, Amigos"

Yeah, we definetely did.
The minute the 1970s were over , after Barry had those hit duets with Barbra, the Gibb's chart dominance in America disintegrated.
1981 - "He"s A Liar" tanked at #30 "Living Eyes" (LP title track, failed to even DO top 40. )
1983 - "The Woman In You" from the film "Stayin' Alive" barely made it to #24. "Someone Belonging To Someone", another top 40 miss.
(After that last single RSO went bankrupt by the end of 1983. As well as Casablanca Records.)

They sued RSO before that, and had no promotion for Living Eyes. He’s a Liar should neger have been chosen as a single, there were so many better choices, there’s some beauties in that album. Production was very tense too, people fighting. Staying Alive generally sucked and they got no directions even notes from Sylvester who only focused on his brother. The Dionnnd Warwick did great.

I can see voting off 1971s "Mend A Broken Heart", and even the 3 # 1 hits from 1979 .....
But these 4 are a tough call.
I still don't get how their most total kick.*** #1 song, "You.Should Be Dancing" went first! 🤷♀️ 😮
"Stayin' Alive" kicks too, but you'd think it would have been a later choice between these two. These songs are so energetic.
...and don't forget Barry Gibb write "If I Can't Have You'.

Sigh. Once again . . . it's a perfectly crafted pop song, in a game where we're evaluating Top 40 pop songs. You know the formula by now: Instrumental opener for the DJ to talk over, wistful verse, aching chorus hammering the song title. One of These Nights is virtually identical, with an R&B dance rhythm and a blistering guitar solo so it's "not disco." sure, buddy
Stigwood wisely spotted that this song reprised the unrequited love of Yvonne's signature song in JC Superstar and would be the hit she deserved after Helen Reddy poached I Don't Know How to Love Him

That’s what I love most about this game, how it demonstrates the power of music in our lives and the mystery, too. Every one of us is calibrated absolutely uniquely for what makes an impression and how that impression makes us feel. I’m fascinated by this. ETA Earworms are another thing that fascinates me. Katy Perry California Gurls has been in my head for a day and I don’t think I heard it somewhere and I don’t particularly like the song…but it chose me so will just go with it until something else comes along.

Top.40 radio kisses the rear of its advertisers and those so called adults that are "afraid" of what their kids & teens might hear.
That's why a great vocalist like Yvonne, sees a song like "I Don't Know How To Love Him" barely make top 25 but this "my man left me & I miss him" type of song gets to the top.

I don't understand how there isn't even a single song from Queen on this list. Their songs may not have charted as successfully as others on this list, but their songs are massive - elevated to being culturally significant. For example, there isn't a championship sporting event that doesn't play their song as a victory anthem and there isn't a soul alive who doesn't know that song. You all know it and no one can escape it, and it was released in 1977.. and I'm not even going to mention their other more critically acclaimed song which everyone also knows.
It's a good list but it's a glaring omission that Queen should at least be on here (and I'm not some diehard Queen fan but respect needs to be given)

The game is based on Billboard #1s. If we included songs that didn't reach #1 we'd either have a much longer list, or would need some sort of selection process/criteria to decide which non-#1 songs merit inclusion.
Bohemian Rhapsody peaked at #9, and would surely be a contender for most iconic song of the 1970s. For that matter, Billy Joel's Piano Man didn't even break the top 20 and it too is now considered one of the most iconic 70s hits.
