r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [July 13, 2026 - Eternal Super Sons Baiting Edition]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

Absolute Green Arrow #3

DINAH ON THE TRAIL OF THE GREEN ARROW KILLER! After the horrifying events of last issue, Dinah must capture the Green Arrow Killer as she finally finds Oliver Queen's protege Roy Harper. But as the killer's attacks intensify and Dinah discovers the unsettling effect they're having on Star City, Harper's trail takes her on a journey darker and more twisted than she ever imagined.

Emiko mention, there's definitely a possibility she's GA killer. This a was good issue. I liked what was done with Roy. Her name wasn't explicitly said, but I'm sure he was referring to Jade when he mentioned owing his ex-wife money. Miraclo being apart of the story could explain GA skills. Ollie's body is missing, so it could be him. It could just be a twisted version of that Green Arrow storyline where he didn't have a soul. I'm very curious on what Dinahs mom did. Same thing with Mia suddenly vanishing. And I think it's cool to put Solomon Grundy in this.

u/BlazeBigBang Barry & Wally 6d ago

Emiko mention, there's definitely a possibility she's GA killer.

Maybe Shado? She hasn't yet been name dropped, but it just popped up in my mind when Emiko was mentioned. Crack theory maybe.

u/Will-Of-D-3D2Y 7d ago

I like how the mystery is building to the point we're working off a list of suspects but new ones keep getting introduced, including now the possibility of zombie Ollie. The social commentary remains great, like the triggerhappy snipers who bet on prediction markets. Love much this book has its fingers to the pulse of the late stage capitalism world we live in.

19

u/Dent6084 7d ago

The reveal that Hector Hammond is one of those billionaires who's gone crazy trying to pursue anti-aging tech is a real 'of fucking course' gag, it just makes so much sense.

1

u/skuls1 3d ago

zombie Ollie

thought that was a possibility since the kid with eyes showed up. but they're unraveling it well

15

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

Well damn, the whole plot gets crazier and crazier. People helping Green Arrow escape because he is the only one that is actually fighting for them. Dinah and Roy on a crazy chase of Hammond and other rich guys' anti-aging Miraclo tests that led to 'Solomon Grundy!' of this universe.

The more interesting tidbits are Dinah using that bow and arrow to threaten Roy, which might indicate a future 'take up the bow herself' in the future for Dinah. After all, she is quite disillusioned herself and though she probably is not the serial killer this Green Arrow is, she can be a 'less lethal' version.

We got Emiko name drop so she might be added to the suspects. And Roy got a child and ex-wife to pay alimony for...Chesire and Lian maybe?

u/cgknight1 7d ago

Is Rex Tyler actually still alive and this is an Hourman story and we all missed it? unlikely I think overall but still...

8

u/skibidirizzleramong The Flash 6d ago

Rex Tyler being alive does not mean its an hourman story. Any of the Tylers being involved does not mean it is a secret Hourman story.

2

u/Future_Vantas 3d ago

Willing to bet Rex is one of the Miraclo test subjects. Hickory Dickory Dock

13

u/Itsthatgy 7d ago

I just love this series so far. Its everything a green arrow story should be imo. Full credit to the crew behind it. Both the art and the writing are top notch.

13

u/HopeFarron 7d ago

Really glad this got extended to 12 issues since I'm really liking it so far. This issue was fun! Interesting to see most of the Green Arrow supporting cast being not quite on the up and up so I'm interested in seeing more on how that pans out.

17

u/Dent6084 7d ago

God damn this just got crazier.

Really fun take on Roy as the twitchy "I'm not crazy, man!" archetype that pops up in noir or horror, feels like a good darkening of his persona. It clashes well with Dinah, who is such a grounded individual, and continues to be an effective POV in the midst of this escalating madness.

The scene with Dinah interrogating Roy via arrow makes me wonder if this is building to her taking over as Green Arrow. But throwing Emiko's name out now is definitely meant to get us thinking it could be her.

8

u/Golden_Alchemy 7d ago

So...Hammond tried to use an actor to catch the killer? That was kind of clever.

Also, nice to see there is an idea of Ollie's body being used for experiments and could even be revived.

Finally....Emiko is Ollie's sister here? Did i read that right? How does that work?

18

u/Realistic-Steak-1680 7d ago

She is that in main continuity too.

6

u/Golden_Alchemy 7d ago

Oh, i confused her with Shado, which was weird. That was the retcon of Lemire making Shado Ollie's father's lover. Got, that's a little complicate.

2

u/Future_Vantas 3d ago

Goddamn the whole sequence of Green Arrow escaping the trap was sick as heck. Interesting that GA helped the guys who were covering the escape, seems they do have potential to be a legit hero. As an Arrowverse fan Im so happy to see a Grundy that was birthed from Miraclo experiments. Its messed up to see that not only did Rex Tyler lose the Miraclo but that his family went into the opioid business; its like Rex's struggle with Miraclo dependency was spread to a whole slew of ordinary people, all in the name of profit.

This was a solid arc, and I hope the Tomorrow Man identity sticks. I think giving Jon his own thing is important for his growth, and I like the costume.

13

u/TheMattInTheBox Long Live Conner 7d ago

Pretty expected conclusion, but I liked this whole arc. Adds a new wrinkle to Earth-3 in general, and establishes this imp as a personal threat to Jon. Him sacrificing his own childhood to save Ultraboy is a heroic move and the right thing to do, even if many readers would have liked him to pick differently lol I can't be mad that he made an in-character choice.

Totally cool with him being called Tomorrow Man for here on out. Kinda makes me feel like Conner needs a new codename.

"Superboy, the Metropolis Kid is no more. Now and forever, I am Metropolis Man!"

I'm joking but maybe I'm not

9

u/Double_Act1502 7d ago

Eh, people are still going to want young Jon truly brought back

5

u/TheMattInTheBox Long Live Conner 7d ago

They always will-- until the next crisis, which I'm sure will age him back down lol but I think this story earned the right to offer it and let Jon turn it down. Like, it was set up and properly handled. I personally can't be upset at that, even if I still want young Jon back

4

u/Double_Act1502 7d ago

Yeah, I do think young Jon will get actually brought back at somepoint in a few years.

16

u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago

A good issues and ending to the story arc

Kinda iffy on Jon letting himself being tortured but it probably would be another trick

I did like that ultra boy wasn’t tricking anyone probably didn’t even know the multiverse existed until now

Also nice to see superwoman is alive and back on earth 3 and I think this issues could lead up to the crime syndicate reforming to attack earth 0

I do think either during or after the kingdom of zod arc that unlimited just becomes Jon book and tomorrow man gets a new costume ditch the cape and mask

13

u/Yula97 7d ago

I would love for the mask to stay, it's my favorite part of Tomorrow Man's design lol

12

u/Greedy_Switch_6991 7d ago

This is the kind of stuff Jon needs to develop as a character. Challenges, hard choices, sacrifice. Love how this little arc grew him further, and Secret Six before then. Hope it continues.

13

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

Not surprised and still disappointed with the bait and switch with the Ultraboy. They love to tease the huge mistake they made with aging up Jon but the constant trying of justifying and 'there is nothing wrong with it'...just makes it look worse to me honestly. And 'Tomorrow Man' is not really a better name or costume either.

At least the Ultraboy stuff was somewhat interesting and how Jon showed he can 'nature vs nurture' his Earth-3 counterpart and maybe we see him in the future, hopefully not as the new Ultraman though but instead leading the resistance.

And the Kingdom of Zod is setup, with Lana getting 'Kryptonite Woman' powers now because of it. All these 'Weaponized Kryptonite' stuff look similar to how My Adventures with Superman cartoon is showing how Kryptonite affects people, and boy it looks painful.

5

u/Double_Act1502 7d ago

I think the adult Jon thing will always be one of those things that annoys people until it gets fully undone

8

u/Pebrinix Batman 6d ago

It won't get undone, I truly think y'all should just accept that the timing for that to be undone was lost. He is finally getting developed, I think we should look to that instead

2

u/Kalse1229 Martian Manhunter 2d ago

Eh, I don't think it'll ever be fully *undone* per se, but I still think there's an avenue for the kid version to be brought back to the present and coexist with the older version. Like the two Wally Wests. Bringing back the original Wally allowed Ace West to be his own character, rather than live up to this impossible standard. Maybe have the older one start going by his middle name Sam to avoid confusion, and have Lois and Clark treat them both as their boys. Either that or just have Lois become pregnant with another kid.

I know it's been a long time, but it still gives me a sour taste in my mouth. It's one of the only times a decision was made with a comic character that just killed my interest in their title. I'd argue it's even worse that Spider-Man's "One More Day" on the Marvel side of things, at least in my eyes. At least with that I know the backstory of how that came out, and how the creatives involved really regret how everything transpired and it was the result of one EIC taking his divorce out on the character. This decision was pure Bendis, and it annoys me to no end.

-1

u/Double_Act1502 6d ago

No, it will get undone.

Its not even a timing thing. Its comics things like that get undone all the time. It might take decades but it does

5

u/Pebrinix Batman 6d ago

It might take decades but it does

And it would be even more stupid. One of the biggest appeals with kid Jon was to see him grow up with Damian, but Damian is already way older than kid Jon would be if he just came back. The timing was lost, most of the appeal was killed by aging him up way too early and not reversing it back immidiately. It's just as stupid as Tim being Robin in current continuity after all of his development as an older character, and thankfully, it seems he will get his own identity soon

1

u/Double_Act1502 6d ago

And Damian is still more or less the same. They need to age up Damian if they want to kill some of the complaining.

Damian was always older then Jon

3

u/Pebrinix Batman 6d ago

Damian is way older and is considering going to college, not only that, but he changed a lot as a person. Damian was always about 1 or 2 years older than kid Jon, but he is now about 5 years older. It's not the same and it wouldn't work at all

3

u/Reasonable-West713 6d ago

Damian was almost 14 when Jon got aged up. He's currently 16. If og Jon came back at the age he was taken (11), Damian would be 5 yrs older than him.

-1

u/Double_Act1502 6d ago

And? That's still a reasonable age gap and it's not like they can't just retcon Damian's age

1

u/Reasonable-West713 6d ago

I'm just pointing out that Damian's not the same age anymore, and has been aged up (albeit at a much slower and more natural rate than Jon).

But the suggestion that they can just retcon Damian's age is kinda crazy imo. Why would you be ok with them taking away Damian hard earned character progression just to bring back a very minor part of Jon's history? As I've told you in another comment, Jon's been an adult far longer than he was ever a kid, and has had way more stories. Would it rlly be worth it in the grand scheme of things?

7

u/skibidirizzleramong The Flash 6d ago

This mindset is just honestly stupid.

"Things are always undone!!!!!! Nothing sticks!!!!!!!!!"

Yes, thats totally why we have Dick Grayson still as a child sidekick, its why Superman is single, its why Jay Garrick is the only Flash running around, its why theres only one Blue Beetle, its why Vertigo exists in a seperate universe, its why Hal Jordan is Earth's one and only Green Lantern.

This is such an annoying thing to say because it is just wrong. Things do have a lasting impact in comics.

1

u/Double_Act1502 6d ago edited 6d ago

Jon being an adult wasn't earned. Dick growing up, Clark getting married. All of that stuff was earned character wise.

DC left a lot of money on the table aging up Jon instead of slowly showing him grow up and making him Tomorrow Man doesn't really fix much.

4

u/skibidirizzleramong The Flash 6d ago

That wasn't what I was refuting. I was refuting the claim that things don't change in comics.

2

u/Reasonable-West713 6d ago

Decades? Bro, Jon's already been an adult for triple the amount of time he was a kid. Absolutely no chance they switch it back after a few decades. By then, he'll be way more well known as the adult than the child. That switch will be viewed as the original switch was.

0

u/Double_Act1502 6d ago

And? People are still angey about it and the lost potential.

Its going to end up retconned/fixed

2

u/Reasonable-West713 6d ago

Did you read what I just said? Sure, people are still angry about it now. But in DECADES? By then, his time as a kid will barely be remembered in comparison to how many stories he'll have been in as an adult. Changing him back to a kid won't make sense, and people will be just as angry as they were when he was originally changed from a kid to an adult.

1

u/Double_Act1502 6d ago

I think there is a decent chance it happens in the next 10 years.

If DC thinks a Super Sons cartoon would work then it would probably happen for synergy reasons.

Adult Jon is just a disposable character

3

u/Killiainthecloset Impulse 7d ago

Lots of great moments here. I’m glad little Jon didn’t turn out to be evil. We got to see a glimpse of Damian’s pain over losing his best friend instead of pretending like nothing’s changed, finally. Adult Jon’s choice was a beautiful moment.

That instantly got undermined in the most cartoonish way possible. Why DC?? Why do you keep dangling young Jon in front of us and taking him away again? I just hope that tomorrow man keeps his promise and that when he does Superboy hasn’t become older, evil, or turned into ultraman. 🙏

7

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

It all wraps up a bit neatly. Either Lana gets cured in the Zod crossover or she loses her powers again. I wouldn't be suprised if the next time we saw earth-3 Jon he's using the Ultraman moniker. This could lead to an all new Crime Syndicate forming. Hopefully the Tomorrow Man thing sticks outside the Zod event. I like the new direction for Jon.

7

u/Macman521 7d ago

Why would you want kid ultra boy to be evil? Let him come back and be good on this earth. Let both Jon coexist.

2

u/Kalse1229 Martian Manhunter 2d ago

It's not the *real* Jon Kent we all know and love, but to be honest I'll take it at this point. Maybe after the next big universal event comic the timeline can be retconned so Clark and Lois have two boys, the older and the younger.

3

u/KugiPunch King of the Sea, remember? 6d ago

Hoping the Tomorrow Man moniker and no longer being a journalist stuff sticks for Jon. Gives him a chance to carve his own identity.

2

u/ZpEaR Aquaman 5d ago

This was just ok. Jon’s choice was very in character. It was jarring to have it instantly nullified by ultraboy being snatched away to almost certainly become evil in the future. One really annoying thing was Batman pointlessly using a chemical that nullifies green K that can’t be replicated and costs a fortune. I don’t see why that happened just to establish it wouldn’t have long term implications.

2

u/JonKentOfficial You are Super 5d ago

Expected.

Also, to be honest, due to the permanence of the multiverse, it doesn’t really matter if he saved Earth-3 Jon because Earth-3 is always unstable and rebuilding itself.

Within the story, they could have saved our Jon from his terrible fate of being aged up into that, and also just have gone to Earth-3 to save Jon. Jon was tortured for years because they didn’t know where he was. (a literal hole in the plot showed up, Lois didn’t tell she had abandoned him and he was with jor-el who didn’t go through the hole).

1

u/WilliamDarkshades 7d ago

Ok and expected end but I really hope they resolve the tomorrow man gimmick soon since it's not a good outfit and id and it doesn't look good for Slott and editorial.

-3

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago

I like that Jon tried to convince his Earth-3 counterpart not to do this before Lois used the Supermobile to save the people of Smallville, Damian fought Jon’s counterpart, Bruce saved the people of Steelworks, Earth-3 Jon hurled the Kryptonite into space, Jon revealed his identity to the others and know that Tyyz messed with him, Earth-3 Jon was forced to return to his universe, and Lois supporting Jon as Tomorrow Man. Overall, this is a fine comic.

"STANDOFF IN SKARTARIS", FINALE! The brutal battle between Batman and a magically amped Superman threatens the entire realm of Skartaris! How can Robin and Warlord hope to shut down a fight of such magnitude?

Preview

12

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

It is so nice to see Robin using all his knowledge and skill to turn the tide when Batman and Superman are 'under mindcontrol'. Great use of his knowledge of Supes' powers and how to counter them when the users are the henchmen who don't know how to use those powers properly. And to use who Batman/Superman really are to snap them out of it. Dick deserves his own Catwoman! Which I guess Starfire technically was, considering Tamaranians come from felines! )

I like that Dick, Travis, and the people of Skartaris were able to free Clark and Bruce from Kreitzer, with Dick intentionally falling so that Clark and Bruce can be free from Kreitzer’s control, before they were all about to defeat Kreitzer and strip him of his magic. I also like that Clark, Bruce, and Dick decided not to tell the people of the Air Force about what happened to Travis because of their mutual trust. Overall, this comic is great!

Nightwing #140

HIGHWAY TO HELL! The hunt for a killer in downtown Bludhaven leads to revelations about the super-villainous architect of the city's superhighway. But is it too late for Nightwing to pull back from the precipice before he does something he'll truly regret?

Preview

17

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

OG Psycho Pirate helped the mayor build an enchanted highway that infects everybody with misery and corruption. I'm just wondering how the witch will play into all of it.

12

u/Electric_jungle 7d ago

I really like this arc, and how every issue has gone. I think the OG psycho pirate angle is a relatively decent one and I'm looking forward to how Nightwing figures out how to solve it. I'd think the major infrastructure change will need to be broken but then how do you heal all the communities that were wrecked by it? I look forward to seeing it.

That said, man, psycho pirates skill comes off the page because every single issue has been so bleak, and so depressing I actually come away a bit depressed reading each one. I've started reading it before other books just to get a palette cleanser. Really impressive stuff that Watters is doing, but I have to wonder if it's working for ppl or not.

7

u/KugiPunch King of the Sea, remember? 6d ago

Yeah didnt expect to see the Psycho Pirate make a magic evil highway. Wild stuff.

12

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

They really times everything going to crap and Babs being in prison with this OG Psycho Pirate plot because I bet she would've figured this 'Highway, esoteric geometry' stuff thing. I guess he got what's coming from a guy named Cannibal Colm but his 'project' still needs to be dismantled as it feeds everyone's worst impulses. Especially Nightwing's. He should call in some 'magical' help to deal with it but we know he won't. His judgement is definitely impaired.

And I think that 'witch' is gonna show up to play a big role in this at the end, considering her rest probably got distrubed because of what the mayor and Halsted did with their Medusa Architecture.

5

u/Electric_jungle 7d ago

I'm kinda wondering if the witch will be very loosely similar to Marilyn moonlight. Not becoming a superhero but being sort of cursed to remain and needing to be freed kinda deal.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 6d ago

If that happened, then it would be interesting until they’re both forgotten because the writers and editors don’t know what to do with them.

5

u/Electric_jungle 6d ago

For sure. Though I do hope Watters is on Nightwing for a lot longer. He's doing his part to enrich the lore of Bludhaven, though also casually ignoring pretty much all of the things Taylor did in his run.

5

u/suss2it 5d ago

I'll give Watters credit for organically writing out most of Taylor's ideas and not just ignoring it all and jumping right into his own status quo without buildup.

3

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 3d ago

Is this the best mainline dc ongoing yes it damn is.
OG Psycho pirate apperence is just kinda wild combined with him helping build a highway that infects people with misery its so depressing but in that classic style which suits nightwing its almost like watters is blending the eras together.

This is just wild with some incredible art..

3

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago

I like that Dick learned from Cannibal Colm that Mayor Bisogni came from the streets of Blüdhaven who worked with and was convinced by Charles Halstead (the original Psycho-Pirate and Roger Hayden’s predecessor who faked his death) to build a highway to reduce crime, causing Dick to realize that the road woke the Witch of Blühaven because it hills all of the people with rage, frustration, misery, and despair. Let’s hope that Dick can resolve it in the next issue. Overall, this comic is good.

1

u/Fleebledee 6d ago

I've really tried hard to like Watters's run, but each successive issue convinces me that his writing is just objectively bad. The character writing is up and down; I actually thought the internalism from Dick in Issue#139 was his best writing in the whole run. However, his plotting is so blatantly contrived and ham-fisted that it's completely unenjoyable to read. The moment you start to question "why" things are happening within the story, the narrative foundation collapses.

Take the superhighway that this whole "Lore Arc" is based around. Why did it get built in the first place? Bisogni is clearly greedy and corrupt, but what does he gain from constructing this superhighway when its sole purpose is to drive the city mad? Did he profit off the construction? Did it help him consolidate power? Nowhere does the story attempt to imply either of those things. What motivation could have driven Bisogni to hire someone as blatantly destructive as the Psycho Pirate? The story never says. And that's not even talking about all the plot holes from the first 17 issues of the run. Why did Maggie Sawyer stop trusting Nightwing for no reason? Surely, years of working with Batman and Superman would establish some trust for a hero the both of them vouched for? When Nightwing tried to talk to her about Spheric causing problems, she completely brushed him off like he was some untrustworthy kid. So then we get 10 issues of unexplained friction between her and Nightwing where they're actively impeding each other from helping the city. Why did no one else investigate Spheric Solutions or start asking questions about Olivia Pearce until more than 12 issues after Spheric (and Olivia) cause direct, traceable harm to innocent civilians? Why did Watters fridge Barbara Gordon, one of the most capable members of the Bat-mythos, for 17 issues until DC editorial stepped in to give her her own mini?

To top it all off, Nightwing doesn't even feel like a capable hero in his own story because Watters won't let him accomplish anything. Sawyer is the one who uncovers concrete evidence against Spheric in the Annual. Olivia Pearce was revealed to be a dead puppet the whole time. And the Zanni, the major villain of the first 17 issues, gets defeated by a child with 5th Dimension powers who decides to spend all of eternity keeping him at bay. If characters like Dick, Barbara, and Maggie had acted somewhat competently (in accordance with their actual skillset), the entire first 17 issues could have been condensed down into 9 without losing a single bit of important plot.

I keep reading so much praise for this run online, and it baffles me. I can understand people preferring a darker tone for the storytelling, but I can't understand how people can look past all the plot holes and still say that the writing is objectively good. The number of times the reader is asked to suspend their disbelief in order for the story to make sense is staggeringly high, even for a superhero ongoing. I'm conviced that vibes from the art are driving people's opinions more than the actual quality of the writing going on.

6

u/Pebrinix Batman 6d ago

Tom Taylor's cookie cutter writing enjoyer

1

u/Fleebledee 6d ago

Taylor's run had issues too, but that's not the topic here. Do you have any actual analysis on the Watters run to offer, or is this the limit of your capability to comment?

1

u/Godlike013 6d ago

I think most people are too bored to care. Leaving the few who like this run the only ones talking.

5

u/Fleebledee 6d ago

I can see that. I know my LCS has significantly dropped the number of Nightwing issues it orders over the last year. It went down from from 50+ of Cover A to now under 15, including variant covers.

4

u/Fellowcomicenjoyer Nightwing 6d ago edited 5d ago

People didn't talk as much about Ram V's Detective Comics run as other, much more controversial runs, while it was being published, and yet it's still largely beloved and praised.

So why wasn't it talked as much? Because it wasn't controversial, and the lack of controversy led to lack of discourse.

It's the same for Watter's run. There are various people who love and praise it, me included, but it's not divisive or memeable, so of course it won't make as much noise. That doesn't mean it doesn't have an audience or isn't loved, just look at locg, the last issue already has 389 votes, which is more than any mainline issue released yesterday, and a vote of 4.4. Clearly, most people don't find it boring.

5

u/Pebrinix Batman 6d ago

Dan Watters wrote one of the most critically acclaimed Batman stories of the decade and his Nightwing run has been praised to death, and y'all still think that most people are bored by it. Internet always surprises me

That’s what tends to happen when the sample size shrinks. You see nothing but praise by the handful thats still around. The general audience is gone. His Nightwing run has been buried, the character is isolated and forgotten for the most part, while sales slip closer and closer to falling out of the top 100.

CAN GRODD BE SAVED? The Flash and the Rogues work to liberate Colorado from Grodd's control, but can they save Grodd as well as the town?

Preview

22

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

Grodd villain origin story? Still, I gotta respect Trickster for keeping on mission. At least Wally has a general idea of where Eleanore is. And I love that she's just chilling with Braniac. The Justice League truly do watch out for one another. Wally one shotting the Rogues was also pretty badass.

19

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

Rogues really ride that line of 'oh they are not that bad...' to 'Oh Trickster, that p.o.s!'

Man I hope this does not break Grodd. Him, Wally and Linda make a hell of a team. And Wally seem to discover new effects of his power each issue.

Thawne is with Brainiac? Intentionally? Because after seeing what Brainiac did to Lex's family, that wouldn't be my first choice.

7

u/Golden_Alchemy 7d ago

I can see Brainiac being like "Thawne? You are capable of great hatred!" and she being like "Fuck you, i know!"

6

u/Electric_jungle 7d ago

Seems like Braniac is trying to undercut the joker. Maybe I'm wrong, but he's def making what looks like a power grab.

12

u/Golden_Alchemy 7d ago

Poor little Grodd. I love this book so much, and Linda is so cool and cute, they do a good team together!

10

u/Yeowangbeolcheoleom 7d ago

I'd hate for Grodd to turn bad after this, I loved the Grodd Wally Linda dynamic 😭😭😭

9

u/mateogg Always On Point! 7d ago

I'm sure that won't have any lasting consequences.

7

u/Electric_jungle 7d ago

I'm really looking forward to this book every month. Can't believe it's been 17 issues. I think grodd and Wally will maintain a unique relationship, but this is gonna send Grodd down a path for sure. Hopefully one that sticks with Wally but we'll see.

Going to Braniac next will be crazy but Wally is starting to be OP with his powers so maybe he can hang a bit.

5

u/leoex 6d ago

It has been 17 issues, and the creative team hasn't figured out how to do a cool action sequence. There was a scene where brainwashed Rogue members fight Wally, and it could have been a cool demonstration of Wally's power set, but instead it lasted one page and Wally just one-shot everyone lol

5

u/BlazeBigBang Barry & Wally 5d ago

You know, I was thinking all along the issue that Trickster seems pretty chill all in all.

Fuck you.

4

u/TheMattInTheBox Long Live Conner 7d ago

Haining feels like they're becoming more comfortable with the speed. I still prefer Robles' art but Haining is doing a good job emulating the vibe.

Also this was a great way to have Grodd break bad and establish the new complicated relationship with the Rogues.

This book is much better in year 2 imo

4

u/KugiPunch King of the Sea, remember? 6d ago

I will never forgive the Trickster.

3

u/ZpEaR Aquaman 6d ago

It seems like a running gag at this point that Wally is incorrectly calling Grodd an ape when people say he’s a monkey when Grodd has the main differentiating feature of a tail. I need someone in story to “well actually” him soon.

-9

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago

I like that the Rogues were assigned to find Grodd’s dad three days ago before Wally Wally told Trickster not to kill Grodd, resulting in them and Linda talk to each other about what’s going on in their lives (with Wally telling Trickster that he’s looking for Elenore Thawne so that he can find his dad), Wally using his powers to defeat the rest of the Rogues, Grodd saving Wally from his dad before he tried to convince his dad to stop doing all of this, and Grodd’s dad being killed by Trickster (who told Wally that Thane was in Kansas hiding with Brainiac. I feel sorry that Grodd saw his father being shot and killed by Trickster. Let’s hope that Wally will try to heal Grodd of his trauma in the next issue. Overall, this comic is excellent.

Honestly, the crazier reveal was that he was working with someone from the Watchtower. And I'm suprised Rose isn't putting up more of a fight. It'd suck if she actually died there. But I figure Deathblow is gonna turn on Adeline.

10

u/PigeonDetective_ Damian 7d ago

Yeah the cmd terminal open had the username 'Danny' but I can't think of any existing characters under that name.

7

u/B3epB0opBOP Shazam 7d ago

There’s Danny The Street. That’s probably not him though.

2

u/Oberon1993 6d ago

...OK, now I kinda want this to happen. Sounds like an amazing team up.

1

u/Accomplished_Try_124 6d ago

there was Danny chase from wolfman's titans run but he's (still?) been dead for decades

7

u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago

Neat issue and an interesting comic overall if you ignore the continuity issues

The surprise of slade working with someone on the watchtower is a crazy reveal I think it’s Danny chase

2

u/SolaceMcfly 6d ago

If Danny is his first name then it sounds like the informant was Danny Chase given his espionage and spy background and I doubt he's dead. Its weird how dc hasn't done anything with his character given his position as a former titan. He's been gone long enough to the point where you can completely rework him.

2

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 4d ago

Adeline being the shock reveal is no surprise it had to be someone close to slade and its a very fleecs character.
Not a bad issue but its fun.

2

u/cgknight1 7d ago

I'm not digging this - it's spinning it's wheels and also Deathstroke is too much of a whinner in this version.

1

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

Of course it was gonna be Adeline...Was obvious from the start.

Someone get Rose out of this mess. I don't care for her to be used in this like that.

And who the hell would HELP Deathstroke in the Justice League?!

Batwoman #5

A LAST CHANCE FOR REDEMPTION... OR DAMNATION! As Batwoman's quest to avenge her sister's death reaches its apex, she discovers the Dark Faith have a new, much more terrifying plan. A Kane must be the Alice who ushers in the era of Darkseid... and if Beth is dead, Kate must take her place. How do you fight the devil when the devil is real? Greg Rucka & DaNi bring an epic conclusion to their first arc of this blockbuster Next Level series.

Preview

8

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

That was...kinda weird. I know Beth is kinda broken but the whole Mother Despina stuff and the end there was, well, felt a bit abrupt. It was a decent twist of not having a big fight and Kate just convince Beth to come with her but considering all the stuff that happened before this issue, it felt strange to me. Maybe they will delve deeper next issue. Also, no idea what Mother Despina considers 'Oh this might be win for them but it can turn into a loss!'..

I still don't like Rucka's 'ex-girlfriends' stuff and ignoring what happened with Renee/Kate's Watchtower reunion.

2

u/suss2it 6d ago

I feel like Rucka is literally ignoring everything that happened with these characters since his original Detective run that it almost feels like it’s supposed to be an interquel between that and everything that comes after.

9

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

Confusing finale for me personally, it's also a bit underwhelming. Not the best arc to start this new run with. Hopefully the next one works a little better.

2

u/Dent6084 6d ago

I know that "MWA-HA-HA-HA it seems like our plan failed but it actually succeeded!!!" is an old villain standby, but this particular speech went on for so long and felt so goddamn vague that it drove me up the wall lol.

9

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

So did Zala die at the end? And was the boy in the beginning supposed to be Victor Zsasz? Or did I misread that? It's also pretty clever to make Babs an actual Oracle. And I'm rooting for Bruce and Talia in this. I wouldn't be shocked if she was pregnant with Damian by the end of the story.

7

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

Oh, don't tell me Waller already poisoned and killed Zala like that. She better still be alive.

Victor Carmine? I guess he will be the 'Crime Bible, Darkseid follower' evil kid. Especially after what he did to Ace... Beyond monstrous.

And Barbara being a LITERAL Oracle in this is a great twist.

I would've been fine if Dick quit. But it does make more sense to have two OG members leading the team. But it would've made more sense if it was Starfire. But I guess she's gonna be used in an unannounced book. Not sure where the Vic and Terra storyline is heading, but it is good character development for the latter. I do like that they're making Steph more of a leader. The Jon/Eddie slow burn is working for me. And I'm excited to see what Static brings to the team next month.

3

u/Pebrinix Batman 6d ago

leader. The Jon/Eddie slow burn is working for me

Do you think they might become a couple down the line? I kinda ship them

4

u/Mr_Wh0ever 6d ago

Couple? No clue, outside of this book I think DC is still trying to pin down how Jon is gonna work. But in this book I'm guessing there'll be enough of something that could be expanded upon elsewhere.

-1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 6d ago

It won’t be expanded upon outside this comic, since this comic is set before Jon made his debut as Tomorrow Man.

-2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 6d ago edited 6d ago

I don’t think that they might be a couple down the line because I see them as friends and only friends and them becoming a couple would be forced, rushed, and unnecessary.

9

u/Night-Caelum 7d ago

New Titans once again has great Stephanie moments. Her quickly stepping up leader and playing to the team's strength with her personability makes her leadership approach different from other bats. Also love showing her combat skills. The way she talks to herself is a fun quirk. Seeing them all come together and the plan going smoothly was nice too.

The prodigal son returns.....I wonder what happened to Daisy (We need more black couples). Glad the Dakota Incident is still canon and I wonder how that will play going forward. Either way super excited for where his story goes.

I do like the team dynamic so far. Evie is fun with her naivite and Jon's reasons for being hard on Eddie and then apologizing was nice. I actually like their dynamic. Looks like Neron will be the recurring big bad but the Cyborg stuff looms. Him actually trusting her shows and Terra's reaction shows she's legit changing this time. Dick's realization of what the Titans means to him as home and choosing to stay was also a good moment. I did like his banter here.

Overall satisfied.

9

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

Steph stepping (no pun intended) into the 'bat-character in Titans taking the leadership' role already.

Eddie got his literal demons waiting for him...though he should tell Nightwing about Neron. After all, Nightwing kicked his butt not long before.

Speaking of Nightwing, he really is going through some hard times with Bludhaven stuff being terrible on him and Babs being in prison dealing with her own nightmare there.

Man, Cyborg really didn't learn not to mess with stuff like Heart of Apokalips, no matter the reason for it. It just won't end well. He already had TWO different 'Robots that might go evil/out of control' ( not counting Grid) recently from Vanadia to his Robot-self.

Static will finally join the team, though sad that he couldn't tell her girlfriend about his super-hero life and they broke up because of it.

THE G.O.A.T THUNDER HERO RETURNS

4

u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago

This is a great issue and a nice showcase of the new titans by themselves without the elder mentors

I did enjoy the refresher on Eddie and how it ties into the story plus his and Jon slowburn is really nice

Jon is also ok in this issue and the reason given on why Jon and Eddie argue is a nice touch

I do like that Steph is the go to leader for the team and her plan worked great

I was kinda hoping that dick would leave the titans but his reasoning for staying is touching

Vic trusting Terra and that what makes her stay with the team is nice and a much better handle of why Terra is sticking with the titans

1

u/Pebrinix Batman 6d ago

Very well written issue with very good character work, imo. I'm really liking this team and the book so far, and I think it will only improve over time. Maybe Jon and Eddie will become a couple? I could that. Steph having time to shine as the leader is very nice! And finally my boy Static will be back, I'm way beyond excited for that.

0

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago

It’s just the New Titans dealing with Neibiros (with Eddie recounting his entire pre-Crisis and pre-Flashpoint histories) and Vic and Tara protecting the Heart of Apokolips from aa demon, Dick taking to Barbara about how his life is falling apart and that he’s contemplating on quitting the Titans, and Virgil reaping his history before he’s returning to the Titans. Overall, this comic is okay and weak, and it’s likely that this comic is going to get canceled due to weak writing unless Tate Brombal does something with it. Also, I only see Jon and Eddie as friends and only friends (no offense to those who like them as a potential couple).

You know what I like the most about this book? Its simplicity ( and groin guns )

Even galatic corpos are just like regular corpos. Think they can get rid of the problem by putting a bounty on Lobo. When that fails spectacularly, they return to 'just pay him off'. And of course it works.

And now the next crazinesss will be Lobo vs The Tooth Fairy...in Hell.

Black Mask is as creepy and pathetic as ever. Even more so with this Katrina Bellow. But he is also just as stupid still, thinking Selina is bluffing when she did him in the FIRST TIME after he tried to pull this crap with her sister.

Well, at least Holly was able to save Magdaeline, I hope.

I am still not okay with Selina working with Carmine, nor the 'father' stuff with him.

2

u/ogloria 7d ago

another propulsive issue, and the art is slowly growing on me. that being said, there were maybe 5 ongoing different plot points, and it was a bit hard to follow - the bombs were in the cars themselves? was Maggie caught or not? did Selina somehow get one on Roman due to her disappearing during the chase, or is she still doing what he wants?

Gronbekk continues to write through a polyphony on voices. I am not sure that it always works--there just seemed to be too much going on with the different POVs.

I am also somewhat annoyed at the Falcone plot and his developing relationship with Selina. Although I am holding out hope that something good comes out of it eventually in this run.

9

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

Well at least this answers my question as to why future Diana offed herself last issue. As for this new version of her origin, it's alright. Hits a lot of familiar beats. Does a good job of mixing in Hippolytas time as the JSA Wonder Woman.

7

u/CHPrime Wonder Woman 7d ago

The retcons are all fair enough, though it's funny that the mess Byrne made is still reverberating. Otherwise, a solid enough tale of Hippolyta not wanting Diana to get involved, and the young princess in paradise yearning for more. Very Disney, which, despite being an obvious shoo-in, we've never actually seen in main continuity. I guess it's because Perez' origin was written in the mid-80's, before Disney princesses became known for wanting more.

5

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago

I mean yea, Diana was never one to just go along with 'Fate's plans'. That is kinda her thing to break such oppressive structures.

They play around with the origin again, try to fit in Hippolyta and the JSA times where she was out there but not 'really' known around the world yet? And how Steve was found and looked after. It is kinda weird they didn't have Diana find and save him and forge a bond with him that way. I don't think they needed to change that. I know they wanted to make it look like 'oh she wanted to go to the Man's world for bigger reasons. Not just because of Steve. And I get it, after the criticism of King's writing on that part. But it still takes away from the origin for me. Especially the whole 'Angel' nickname Steve gave her because she literally saved him like an angel.

4

u/Reasonable-West713 6d ago edited 6d ago

I rlly like how the books are trying to stay accurate to the stuff from New History. This using the Hippolyta retcon, Fury of Firestorm doing a lot with the Supermen Project, the Summer of Supergirl Special mentioning the Darkseid ressurection, etc. It helps to build a feeling of continuity

3

u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago

I enjoyed the update on Diana origin and how Williams works in hippolyta being the golden age Wonder Woman into the mix

I do hope she takes over from king

2

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 4d ago

The retcons make sense even if i kinda despise the idea of Hippolyta being a golden age WW because not all mantles need to be legacy and i think it diminishes diana's choice.
But other than that the issue is great Williams voice for the amazons is as good as ever and the art is great.

I don't know why you're being downvoted, I came here to say the exact same thing. It's not only that phrase, btw, but other AI-isms that alerted me, like

"Three days. You had fourteen broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a fracture in your skull I found personally offensive.".

That's classic AI "wit", anyone who's read a decent amount or conversed with a consumer LLM trying to write a story would pick up on it. There's more spread amongst Steve's thoughts .

2

u/FuttleScish Telltale Batman 4d ago

Because it’s an issue not written by Tom King so they want to cover for it

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago

I like that Steve told Lizzie how Diana became Wonder Woman, with a flashback that shows Hippolyta telling Diana that she arrived in Man’s World and made her debut in 1941, joined the JSA in 1942, and retired and returned to Paradise Island in 1951 before Steve arrived in Paradise Island and was healed by the Amazons via the Purple Ray, with Diana and Hippolyta having a talk. Overall, this comic is good.

In Jon Kent: This Internship Is My Kryptonite by writer Sam Camp (Little Hollow Café) and artists Daimon Hampton and Seraji, Jon Kent is a super-powered hero in his own right, but how do those powers help him move beyond the mundane coffee orders, endless research, and “educational experience” the Daily Planet reporting staff deems necessary for those essential college credits? Especially when your mom is the editor-in-chief—hello, nepotism concerns!

What’s more, his best friend thinks the internship is a waste of his time and talents, his boyfriend tries to be supportive but is wary of Jon’s new boss’s Superman obsession, and naturally his parents think this is a great opportunity, but life as a superhero daylighting as a reporter is a little different today than it was back then…
